From that to that
An Opie self-portrait is a cartoon version of an original photo; I will be showing
how I tuned a photo of myself into a Opie portrait.
Using apple software I took a photo of myself using photo booth, then I exported
that photo into Photoshop and then I began the transformation.
The Tools I used in Photoshop
I used a variety of toll in photo shop. The first tools I used was to remove the
background so I just had my body, I used the lasso tool, magnetic lasso and the
magic wand to select the areas to delete them. The lasso tool is used to select an
area freehand; the magnetic lasso is used in the same way as the ordinary lasso
except it snaps to colours to get a more accurate selection area. The magic wand
is used to select an area, which also snaps to a certain colour, but it is not
freehand like the magnetic lasso. I also used the colour picker which choses a
certain colour and also used the fill tool and the brush.
Technique
Once you have got your photo imported into Photoshop you can start to take out
the background and any unwanted bits and pieces you don’t want in your photo,
now after that what you can do is create a few new layers and you can start
taking apart your photo. This would include using the magnetic and the ordinary
lasso to select the areas and copy and paste them into the new layers. This would
include selecting the eyes nose mouth face eyebrows hair and the body. Once
they are all in different layers you can use the colour tool and pick the colour you
want for the face eyes nose mouth and the background and you could either fill
the area or select the area with the lasso and then fill the selected area, which is
more precise. Once you are finished that you can flatten the photo and save it.
Areas which you may struggle on
When I was creating my Opie self portrait what I found is that selecting areas are
a bit delicate, and if you miss select the area you have to start again. Also what I
struggled on was just finding the tools. Although I am familiar with Photoshop I
found that the tools don’t say what there functions are so it does take a little
experimenting to get the right tool, I also thought that there is not a great way to
know what tools are where on the toll bars.
