A Critique of the Proposed National Education Policy Reform
Opie Self Portrait Evaluation using Photoshop Tools
1. Opie Self Portrait Evaluation (Map 1:Assessment 1)
This task was inspired by the famous, iconic album cover by the band blur,
created by the artist Opie. The very first thing I did, was take a photo of my face
using the application Photobooth. I then started to edit it using Photoshop.
I used a range of tools on the application, Photoshop, to create my Opie Self
Portrait. The first tool I used was the ‘’magnetic lasso tool’’ this allowed me to
select a part of my face to then alter to a cartoon like image. I struggled using this
tool and found it easier to just use the normal ‘’lasso tool’. This allowed me to
freely draw around each feature. Another tool I used, was the ‘’eyedropper tool’’.
This tool gave me the closest colour accurate to my features. Sometimes it was
inaccurate but you can change the colours tones and intensity. Once I had
chosen a colour I was satisfied with, I then filled the part using the ‘’Paint bucket
tool’’. This tool fills each part of the layer and the feature. If it wasn’t coloured
how I liked it, then I used the normal ‘’brush tool’’. The last tool I used for this
task, was the ‘’ellipse tool’’ this allowed me to draw a circle for my pupils and
nostrils.
I encountered a few complications whilst completing this task. One of the first
was using the ‘’magnetic lasso tool’’. I found it difficult to manage and overcome
this by then using the regular ‘’lasso tool’’, this allowed me to draw/trace freely
around whatever I wanted.
I think that I was somewhat successful completing this brief. I’m not an expert in
photoshop, but I’ve used it a few times in the past in my graphic GCSE lessons. I
am fairly pleased with the outcome and I am sure I will be able to improve
further during my time in Media studies and will eventually feel confident in the
programme.
