2. PRELIMINARY TASK:
You need to undertake the following Continuity Task, in no more than groups of
four to prepare you for the Main Task:
Film and Edit a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in
a chair opposite another character.
Film and edit 2 or 3 lines of dialogue.
Ensure there is Match on Action.
Include evidence of Shot/Reverse Shot.
Ensure you have followed the 180 degree rule of narrative continuity.
Show your film to the class and take notes on feedback ahead of the main task –
you will be working in the same groups.

6. Shot/Reverse Shot
Shot reverse shot is a film technique where one character is shown looking at another
character (often off-screen), and then the other character is shown looking back at the first
character. Since the characters are shown facing in opposite directions, the viewer assumes
that they are looking at each other. (Wikipedia)
7. Match on action
Cutting on action or matching on action refers to film editing and video
editing techniques where the editor cuts from one shot to another view that
matches the first shot's action.
8. RESEARCH FOR MAIN TASK – 20 Marks
Analyse 2 x contemporary film extracts (from the genre you intend to use),
with screenshots (500 words) for your RESEARCH PORTFOLIO to include an
analysis of the following:
Institutional factors – Production, Distribution, Funding, Audience and
Audience Appeals
Genre Conventions:
Most genres have elements that the audience expects as they have been used many times
in previous films from their genre/sub genre. The conventions of a film in the horror
genre are: Either a dark isolated setting e.g. forest/abandoned building.
Narrative and form and style (use of technical and symbolic codes)

Individually Script and Storyboard the titles and opening sequence for a new
film for your RESEARCH and Planning PORTFOLIO – plan for a maximum of 2
minutes:
In your groups you will select one Script/Storyboard that will be developed
into a 2 minute production.

Two pages is enough for the Script itself – you need to include details of Act 1
only.
Include in the script details of: locations, non diegetic and diegetic sound
incl. dialogue, lighting, camera instructions and elements of the mise-en-
scene.
11. Storyboarding
Storyboard 15 frames with full audio and video instructions including
editing, timings of shot, lighting, colour, sound, framing, camera angle,
camera movement and elements of the mise-en-scene.
