2. HUNGER GAMES
Overview
Katniss Everdeen voluntarily takes her younger sister's place in the Hunger Games, a
televised fight to the death in which two teenagers from each of the twelve Districts of
Panem are chosen at random to compete.
Preferred - The Hunger Games is a very recent film that is releasing a trilogy to the cinema.
The movies are based off a book of three which are captured by the film very well. The
concept of the movie in my opinion is flawless, this is the main reason for my love for
this film. I believe that I am around the right age range to find this film appealing and
not see it as over the top. For example if I was younger I find the film too violent.
However if I was a lot older then I would not see the point in the concept and plot.
Star Theory - The main actresses that takes the lead in this amazing film. Is none other than
Jennifer Lawrence. The Hunger Games franchise is what set off her acting career.
Hearing news of his budding young actresses people gave the film a chance and then
film spread.
A actor that sealed the deal for his film would have to be Woody Harrelson who plays
Haymitch Abernathy , a previous victor of the Hunger Games. I believe that his acting
brings together the entire film controlling the scene to make all actors and actresses
performances better.
Director - Garry Ross
Year – 2012
Genre – Adventure/Sci fi/Thriller/Action
3. CODES AND CONVENTIONS: HUNGER GAMES
The equipment shown in this shot to the left shows the
meaning of the entire film. That survival is necessary to
make it in this world. This is the main theme of the film
As the main lead is fighting for her life. I chose this
Specific shot because it show determination on the
Actresses face. Showing that she is will fight for the
Things she believes in .
The next shot was chosen because I believe that
It summarises the whole film in one. That the Hunger
Games is all a show to keep people occupied from
The real horrors that are out there. This connote with
Bright colours used to make everything look
Sophisticated.
4. THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY
Overview
A younger and more reluctant Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, sets out on an "unexpected
journey" to the Lonely Mountain with a spirited group of Dwarves to reclaim
their stolen mountain home from a dragon named Smaug.
Preferred – The Hobbit Descends from a great trilogy that I grew up with. I
believe that the being exposure at a young age with fiction films that create
so much imagination. This genre has stuck with me and that is why The
Hobbit have come to be on my most favourited films of all time. The
demographic has always been aimed at males because of the action that is
shown throughout the film such as: Bow and Arrow s and Sword fighting.
Also the characters created for the film are mostly strong male oriented
figures that people could look up to as a role model. The male roles are
similar to Robert Bly’s pre industrial mythopoetic masculine model.
Star Theory - Ian Mckellen one of the most iconic actors for action and
adventurous films. Known for the role of Magneto and Gandalf and other
great characters. Fans from all over the world would go to see films just for
him. As is acting and humorous side make the film worth watching.
Director – Peter Jackson
Year – 2012
Genre – Adventure/Fantasy/Action
5. CODES AND CONVENTIONS: THE HOBBIT
The first shot is showing the audience the
Original buildings from Lord of the Rings Trilogy
So that the cult following can relate the films
Together. This can also be seen as references
As the character might relate ideas to the sequel
Films.
The convention shown in this shot is the locations
that have been created to make the audience believe
that they have travelled to a different universe. With
the ways that the buildings are sculptured and how
the landscape looks. In this case giant mountains
covered with trees and waterfalls.
6. Their cult following of the Lord of the
Rings and The Hobbit trilogy. Enough for
people to take the films to the next
level. They even invented the rest of the
Elvish language from the film and made
it fit with the English language.
Conventions were made so that people
could cosplay as their favourite
characters and interact with the rest of
the fans in the ways of the film.
7. THE DARK KNIGHT
Overview
When Batman, Gordon and Harvey Dent launch an assault on the mob, they let
the clown out of the box, the Joker, bent on turning Gotham on itself and
bringing any heroes down to his level.
Preferred - Not only does the genre intrigue me but I have been a big fan of
fictional superhero films ever since I was a small child. This film appeals to
me more than most because of the way the hero is represented as a dark
character fights for justice. Also the use for a loveable villain such as The
Joker adds a complex and twisting plot to the concept. Even though big
names are added to the film people to see the hero as Batman’s legacy has
been going for years.
Star theory – There are many different actors and actresses that are worthy of
watching in this film such as: Christian bale and Morgan Freeman. The one
actor that everyone came to see is Heath Ledger who plays the incredible
Joker. To prepare for his role, Heath locked himself in a hotel room for a
week. Then the true Joker Appeared!
Director – Christopher Nolan
Year – 2008
Genre – Action/Crime/Drama/Thriller
8. CODES AND CONVENTIONS: DARK KNIGHT
The first thing you think about when you hear the name Batman
is the black suit. Throughout the trailer they try to keep the hero
an enigma. As the bat suit is always remodelled, this entices the
Audience to keep watching until it gets to the end of the trailer
where they unveil the suit. The suit is black because the colour of
the a bat is black. This goes against typical conventions of colours
such as red, blue and green.
To show the wealth of Gotham the trailer shows
most of the characters in suits. This shows that
Bruce Wayne does not come from a poor background.
This is how he is fuelled to become Batman because
he has the money for resources. This is also against
convention because most typical superheroes have
a superpower. Batman doesn't have a power is just
Trained and has the money for the job.
9. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES
Overview
Eight years on, a new evil rises from where the Batman and Commissioner
Gordon tried to bury it, causing the Batman to resurface and fight to protect
Gotham City... the very city which brands him an enemy.
Preferred – Watching the Batman franchise over the years, I have loved the films
dearly. I chose this film to show that it still maintains a overall good
narrative keeping the audience enticed with plot twists and intriguing
characters. Christian Bale has become a Iconic figure for young children.
He is seen as a role model, this is another reason why people would return
to the trilogy because they have seen the other films and know that he is a
well renown actor.
Star Theory - After The Dark Knight villains were the new craze. Next in the list
was Bane played by Tom Hardy. Before the film was release Tom made a
name for himself in a exceptional performance in the film Inception. People
were surprised by the transformation into Bane’s character as the normal
Tom hardy was completely unrecognizable but his acting still shone
through this is why people would want t see this film.
Director – Christopher Nolan
Year – 2012
Genre - Action/Crime/Drama/Thriller
10. CODES AND CONVENTIONS: DARK KNIGHT RISES
For the sequel to The Dark Knight. Conventions for villains over
the years has changed. An audience wants a Villain that is witty
and memorable. The Villain Bane was introduced instantly to the
audience. This is so when people go to watch the film they instantly
know who he is. The reason he is the main focus for this film is
because you have already seen what Batman looks like in the
previous films. So new excitement must get the audience enticed for
the film. This is in the form of Bane.
I chose the shot of the stadium to connote that
The film took place in Gotham city. You can tell by the
Mass of people and a stadium would not be built in a
Small town. This shot was also chosen because
It shows the audience a action sequence in the film on a
big scale. Telling us that the production is to a professional
standard and it is something that no one
has seen before.
11. INTERTEXTUALITY
The Intertextuality that can be found Batman trilogy
Is similar to the Superman franchise as the character
act a like using themselves as disguise to hide their
true form. Also the Two films can be placed in the
same Universe as a film is coming out in 2015
Batman vs. Superman. This links back to the comics
as this is where the characters first clashed.
producers are aiming their films at this market
because that is where the biggest cult following and
audience lies.
12. INCEPTION
Overview
A skilled extractor is offered a chance to regain his old life as payment for a
task considered to be impossible.
Preferred – Because of the concept that revolves throughout the entirety of the
film. I am at the right age to understand the meaning and be able to
decode the plot that the producer has set for me and not to get confused.
The genre being an Action/Thriller appeals to me because of my gender
as most films in this type of genre is male orientated. The overall star
theory in this film would be another good reason for me to go watch this
film as they associated with the Action/Thriller genre a lot. Such as
Leonardo Dicaprio and Joseph Gordon-Levitt who have starred in films
like: Django Unchained and Looper
Star Theory - There are many big names for this blockbuster film such as:
Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page and To Hardy. All of
these actors have been in multiple big Hollywood blockbusters and are
well known by a wide audience who would be solely happy to go and
watch this film for one f these actors or actresses.
Director – John McTiernan
Year – 1995
Genre – Action/Crime/Thriller
13. CODES AND CONVENTIONS: INCEPTION
The first shot is too connote the unique selling point of
the film. Which is the concept of the dream world, Where
anything is possible to create if you can think it. This
Is give the audience the reassurance that the CGI is
Professional and also to explain the concept for any
confused people.
The final shot shows a big part of the films success.
This is the star theory of the film. The biggest names
where casted for this film such as: Leonardo Dicaprio
and Ellen Page. The stars cult following would bring in
more people to watch the film because they are staring
in it, even if the audience didn’t like the concept of the
film.
14. MEDIA LITERACY – HOW I HEAR ABOUT FILMS
The way that I find out about films is using the internet whether that be:
YouTube:
This is where I find Trailers for the upcoming films this allows me t visual assess the
film and whether I want to go and see it.
Social Networking ( Facebook/Twitter);
This is usually where a friend has talked about a upcoming film or a star that they
really like is in a certain film. Depending on the news I will look into the film for
myself.
Reddit:
Reddit is the sole hub for all of the internet. If news of a film is out then this site would
have the information. I check this site daily.
15. RECEPTION THEORY
Reception theory is the way that the audience responses to the message hidden within the text
constructed by the producer or director. This is a meaning that the producers and directors
want to convey across to the audience. This can be done in many ways either through
character dialogue or actions within the film.
Stuart Hall is the man behind identifying the three types of audiences reading messages.
Dominant – Is about what the audience wants to hear from people and agreeing but with limited
knowledge on the subject..
Negotiated – Is when the audience agrees, disagrees or questions a political speech or news
broadcast. Making their opinion based on previously held news.
Oppositional - is when the audience recognises the dominant message but rejects it due to
culture or political opinion. People with this opinion usually have made up their mind on the
person or subject. This is based upon our age, gender, ethnicity, social class.
16. ACTIVE SPECTATORSHIP
The relationship between an audience and the film.
This suggests that different people will react to a
film in various ways. The audience will not just
blindly accept he messages given to them. Active
Spectatorship also relates to cult following.
where the audience characterized by a feeling of
sympathy and camaraderie with others who share
a common interest. Fans typically are interested in
even minor details of the object(s) of their fandom
and spend a significant portion of their time and
energy involved with their interest.
Even though the marketing of a film could bring in a big
following. From previous films or books. An example
is Prometheus with its viral videos of Meet David.
This attracted the film a wide audience, but the film
failed to live up t expectations.
