British movie: Hot Fuzz
Synopsis: Hot fuzz is an british action comedy movie starring Simon peg and nick frost who collaborate an many films together due
to their long time friendship. The movie follows Simon pegs character Nicholas angel as a policeman who moves over to a quiet
village being transferred over from London to act as the new sergeant.
Release/costs: the movie was released on 16 February 2007 in the UK, it received critical and commercial success in its release, the
budget of the movie was around 12 million which is low for some movies when comparing it to something else of the same genre,
the movie however made a huge profit of 80 million in total which is 70 million profit, the movie did well at the box office and
received positive results.
The reason behind the low budget was because the actors within the movie where not those who you would see in Hollywood
blockbuster, it includes actors who are not well known outside of the UK with the exception of Simon peg who has gone into
starring in Hollywood movies. Instead if they were to hire a top paying actor such as Tom Cruise for example then the budget would
be much higher because as he is much more worldwide known actor then he will be expected to be paid more and therefore the
budget will go up to afford to pay him the substantial sum of money. hiring smaller known actors decreases the value because they
are not as known in the industry. Other people that may effect the cost of the production include the directors and producers who
require a sum each day they are on set, also the writers also get some money. The movie had few producers and just one director,
Edgar wright who was the director also acted as a writer on the movie along side cast member Simon peg, because both of these
already have a role such as director and cast member then no extra money has gone into hiring another member to write up the
story. Another effect of cost is location, location effects cost depending on where it is, if the cast was to fly to another country to
film then production would cost more because they would need to fly out all the equipment and crew to the location which will
cost a bit to do also accommodation for the crew effects this as well. The movie was released in cinemas with the option of 2D
because options such as 4K were not around during the release. Therefore the only option was to watch it in 2D.
Production: the movie was filmed in one primary location in the UK, this made things easier with the equipment as
they did not need to move around a lot to different locations. Also the way its shot you can tell its within the UK, this
gives it visual identity the way in which the movie is shot, for example in the UK you can tell the different between
this and American movies, the visual in Hot fuzz uses dark gloomy visuals which we represent with the UK because
that’s what its like ere and is visually imprinted into the movie and gives it a more realistic visual look and feel to it.
This also depends on the equipment used as well, hot fuzz did not have a high budget therefore they use cheaper
cameras, handheld cameras were used for some scenes such as following a character, this would be cheaper to access
and gave it more realism in a way. The movie was released in cinema first for people to go and view it, where it then
became available on DVD 4 months later. After time the movie has gone on to be online where people can stream the
movie, there are many sites to do this on but they are becoming short in numbers because there is some legality to
streaming movies as it is now classed as stealing. People can download onto what ever system they want as well from
these sites. Advertisement was used for the movie, these were shown on TV for the audience to view, there was only
1 trailer for the movie because it shortened the budget for the movie, but it did get lots of people to go and see the
movie.
The movie had three production companies which were studiocanal which are a French based production company,
working title films which is owned by universal studios and finally big talk productions which is a British based
production company. The distributor was universal pictures which distributed internationally and rogue pictures who
did the American release. Universal pictures would be a horizontal integrator because they had a production team in
working title films which was part of the production.
Comparing this to another movie of the same genre this movie there are lots of over the top fight scenes which sort
of defy physics in some cases, hot fuzz manages to tae this seriously and add comedic elements to the movies, for
example in the movie 21 jump street the movie uses slow motion in the fight scenes which can be funnt but takes
away some of the action in the scene
Hollywood movie: anchorman (2004)
Synopsis: anchorman is an American comedy movie released in 2004,the movie follows news anchor Ron burgundy
on his adventure along with his friends.
Release/costs: the movie had a budget of 26 million dollars, the movie in turn made 90 million at the box office the
cost of the movie would be much higher because this is a Hollywood film therefore actors who are much well known
will be used in the movies, for example will ferrel is recognised actor in Hollywood, along with other actors such as
Paul Rudd, Steve carel and may more. Because these actors appear in the movie the budget is much higher to cover
the costs of the actors.
Also the location of shooting, in this movie there are many locations in which the film is shot, for example the
locations its filmed in are; san diego and los angeles, these are two locations used in the movie, los angeles was the
main location and filmed in stage and out on the long beach in los angeles, the cost is effected because of the
multiple locations needed to film at, although the places are in the same country there will be travel costs.
The movie didn’t have may people working on the movie, I had one director and producer with the director and will
ferrel acting as the writers also, the cost wont have a significant impact because of these because there are only few
people in charge of the movie, more directors or producers will effect it more. There is also only one editor and
music composer along with a single cinematographer this reduces the cost.
The movie was relead in cinemas in 2004 in 2D and then later released in physical copy in 2005, a blu ray edition was
then released in 2011 seven years after the original release.
Production: the movie was filmed in two separate locations, the movie itself is supposed to be set in san diego however
there are only filler shots at the start which fill this gap in, the rest of the movie however is set in los angeles in a stage
room which is where the set of the news setting is based, the outside of the news room is also set inlos angeles, this
reduces costs because of the single location.
The visual feel to the movie is also much different from that of hot fuzz, anchorman movie visuals are bright and look more
cinematic to hot fuzz, this is the way American movies are like because it conveys a different message, it sometimes doesn’t
match the way we are meant to feel towards the movie.
The move itself was produced by Apatow productions which focuses on the comedy genre as a whole and was founded in
1994, the distributor was DreamWorks pictures who are a large and well known company in the filming industry.
Independent movie: Clerks
Synopsis: Clerks is an independent comedy movie, independent means that the movie was funded by the maker of
the movie or by a much smaller distributor. The movie was released in 1994,the movie follows two store clerks going
about their everyday lives.
The movie was shot entirely in black and white because to keep the budget nice and short director Kevin Smith got a
hold of cameras that were cheaper and filmed in black and white rather than colour. This makes it different from
most comedies and is almost nostalgic to past historic comedies which were around in the past. This also helped with
budget of the movie, the budget for the production came up to around 27000 dollars, the budget was kept short by
using same location and hiring actors who have never been heard off. The movie went on to make 3.2 million dollars
at the box office when compared to the budget makes it a financial success.
The filming was filmed in one location which was in a convenience store in new jersey, the film follows two characters
in this location being store clerks. Kevin smith who directed the movie also starred in it as the character Silent Bob,
this character would then come to appear I many more movies along with co star Jason mewes who plays a character
named Jay.
Comparing this to other comedies such as anchorman as they are both have similar aspects such as the humour style
there are differences, for example there is only one location setting in clerks while anchorman has many. Anchorman
has a natural feel to it such as visuals, clerks has no visual representation because its in black and white however
emotion from the characters and how they act can change visuals.
Production: the movie was released in 1994 to only a selected amount of cinemas in the United States, this however did not
stop the movie from becoming worldwide spread and being a financial success.
The movie was funded by Kevin smith, he gained the funds by selling a large portion of comic books he collected over the
years, tis maxed out 8-10 credit cards which had a 2000 dollar limit each. The movie was shot in 21 days in the store where
he was only allowed to use it after closing time which was around 10:30p.m-5:30a.m.
The movie was then later released on DVD in 1995 and managed to secure two more sequels.
The production company working on the movie was called View askew production this was a comedy based production
company which was founded by Kevin smith and Scott Mosier, the movie was distributed by Miramax Films who were
founded in 1979.

Production: the movie was filmed in two separate locations, the movie itself is supposed to be set in san diego however there are only filler shots at the start which fill this gap in, the rest of the movie however is set in los angeles in a stage room which is where the set of the news setting is based, the outside of the news room is also set inlos angeles, this reduces costs because of the single location. The visual feel to the movie is also much different from that of hot fuzz, anchorman movie visuals are bright and look more cinematic to hot fuzz, this is the way American movies are like because it conveys a different message, it sometimes doesn’t match the way we are meant to feel towards the movie. The move itself was produced by Apatow productions which focuses on the comedy genre as a whole and was founded in 1994, the distributor was DreamWorks pictures who are a large and well known company in the filming industry.
  • 6. Independent movie: Clerks Synopsis: Clerks is an independent comedy movie, independent means that the movie was funded by the maker of the movie or by a much smaller distributor. The movie was released in 1994,the movie follows two store clerks going about their everyday lives. The movie was shot entirely in black and white because to keep the budget nice and short director Kevin Smith got a hold of cameras that were cheaper and filmed in black and white rather than colour. This makes it different from most comedies and is almost nostalgic to past historic comedies which were around in the past. This also helped with budget of the movie, the budget for the production came up to around 27000 dollars, the budget was kept short by using same location and hiring actors who have never been heard off. The movie went on to make 3.2 million dollars at the box office when compared to the budget makes it a financial success. The filming was filmed in one location which was in a convenience store in new jersey, the film follows two characters in this location being store clerks. Kevin smith who directed the movie also starred in it as the character Silent Bob, this character would then come to appear I many more movies along with co star Jason mewes who plays a character named Jay. Comparing this to other comedies such as anchorman as they are both have similar aspects such as the humour style there are differences, for example there is only one location setting in clerks while anchorman has many. Anchorman has a natural feel to it such as visuals, clerks has no visual representation because its in black and white however emotion from the characters and how they act can change visuals.
