The shining assessment
1. The shining assessment
(Bar Scene https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVTU3n5NVqc)
Camerawork
The first scene too open up the scene is a camera shot of jack walking towards the
Camera, the camera then starts to get a long shot of jack walking towards the camera
While moving backwards and tracking his movement, what this camera angle is used to
Show is jacks body language, as in the scene he can be seen using lots of movement with his
hands like he is frustrated and angry at something, this captures the whole essence of the
characters reaction to the situation going on. The camera and jack finally come within space of
each other as the scene goes from a long shot to a medium shot as he reaches the sign of the
Gold room. The camera then goes to a back shot of jack as he flickers the lights on the
illuminate the room. The camera then cuts to a side view of jack as he walks towards the bar,
this camera work is use to give us a look at the gold room. The camera follows jacks movement
using a tracking shot to him reaching the bar.
A close up is then shown with jacks head in his hands, even though his hands cover his face we
can tell he is frustrated due to the body language. The rest of the scene consists of a back and
forth close up of jack and Lloyd as they exchange dialogue.
Editing
An interesting piece of editing used in the scene is when Lloyd and jack are in the scene
together, the clip never really shows both characters on screen at the same time, there is a
cut between each character when they are talking, this shows signs of jacks insanity as he
begins to see things which are not entirely true as when Wendy comes into the scene she
does not notice Lloyd like jack did. This could also refer to the fact that jack is part of the
hotel and he is attached to it supernaturally due to the fact he knows Lloyds name and such.
At the start of the scene minimal cuts are used as jack journeys to the gold room, from what
I noticed there seems to be three cuts during jacks trip, walking to the gold room, and in the
gold room and finally when he sits at the bar, these three cuts are used to show transition
between each setting being the hallway, ball room and bar.
Mise En Scene
The setting seems to use lots of orange colouring, this could have many meanings, usually
orange is the colour which makes us feel warm, this represents heat, this man have a
interpitation to the theory that the house is hell, since orange is used a lot in the clip and
the appearance of Lloyd out of nowhere this could support the theory, also Lloyd is wearing
red and only appears after jack says he would sell his soul for a drink, maybe this could be a
representation of hell. The Gold room is painted gold which we can say represents the
colour yellow, these are primary colours and the next colour on the wheel is red, this colour
wheel can be completed by jack and Lloyd which could also be a hint at jacks falls into
insanity.
The clip in which jack is at the bar has a mirror behind Lloyd as they speak, this could be
used to show that jack is truly speaking to himself and has finally lost the plot because
mirrors are used lots throughout the movie itself especially when jack is speaking to a
character from the hotel, this could mean the ghosts are not real but jack is just speaking to
himself.
2. Sound
Music build ups are used when jack walks towards the Gold room, when he reaches the
entrance to the room the music pitch increases because it adds suspense to the scene as we
do not expect what going to happen in the room because we can’t see into the room
because the lights are out. This pitch dies down as jack enters the room because the
suspense is gone as the room is empty. The music then stops as jack sits down at the bar.
Theme
A theme which the filmexplores is suspense and mystery, the way in which the movie creates
this is by using different movie tones to give these moods, high pitch music is used to create
suspense, as the higher the music gets the closer a revelation of some sort is, this build up
creates suspense as the audience feels more anxious with each pitch increase.
The movie also uses a time skip, this are usually show with a caption such as the next day or the
next week which show a time skip, there is also a time skip at the end of the movie which
shows jack frozen body sat in the snow it does not show him dying.
Isolation is a theme used as the family is stuck in the overlook hotel due to a snow storm which
makes it hard for them to get to civilisation with the nearest town being 3 hours away. And
the owner of the hotel Mr Ullman does mention that isolation is something the characters
will experience, isolation is one of the things that made Charles Grady kill his family.
Auter analysis
A theme which Stanley Kubrick uses in his movies is the movie starts with no dialogue, in both
Full Metal Jacket and 2001 A space odyssey both movies start with no dialogue and rather
music which is related more to the genre, space odyssey uses a sci fi type music, full metal
jacket uses music which was listened in the time of the Vietnam war and the shining uses
suspenseful music.
Colouring is used as well, in space odyssey the villain is a computer called HAL which has a red
eye this represents danger, the shining uses red a lot too as jack the protagonist turned
antagonist wears a red jacket and tries to kill his family as HAL tries to kill the astronauts in
the movie.
In full metal jacket colouring is sort of used in the way a character descends into madness, this
is the case of PVT. Pyle, as he reaches madness and has gone insane the scene turns dark as
is the case when he is in the bathroom with his loaded weapon which shows he has negative
intentions.
Genre analysis
the shining is an example of a horror filmbecause it creates lots of suspense, suspense is
important in a horror film because it adds a build up to a certain event and reveal of
something such as the antagonist or fate of a character.
A theme is that it included other worldly characters, the shining has ghosts in the movie and
representations of the devil, such as the end photo jack is stood in a similar position to the
devil Baphomet. This connects to the fact jack is connected to the hotel and the hotel has
supernatural and evil intentions, and the appearance of colours which associate with these
subjects.
3. Context
After the shining release Stanley Kubrick set his sights on creating war film, one that would later
be knows as Full Metal Jacket. During production of the movie Stanley was involved in a
near fatal crash with actor lee Ermey, this led to production being put on halt.
