The document discusses a student project to create promotional materials for a band's new album release, including a music video. The project includes two of the following: a website, CD digipack, or magazine advertisement. The group created a black and white music video with sea shots to enhance the narrative. As individual tasks, the student created a magazine ad and digipack influenced by the music video, using its images to portray the relationship between characters and incorporate the video's color scheme. Synergy across the pieces is achieved through consistent location, color, and typography choices to link the materials.

How effective is the combination
1. How effective is the
combination of your main
product and ancillary texts?

2. Brief
Throughout this years project we will be creating a promotion package for a release of a new album, including a
promotional music video for the band.
This will include two of the three following options below:
● A website homepage for the band.
● A digipack for the albums release.
● A magazine advertisement for the digipack.
Throughout this project i will be working alongside Jade Dibble, Hannah Martin and Jasmine Greene.
3. Music video
When discussing as a group we came up with a lot of ideas that we wanted to include and incorporate into the music
video, there were a lot of ideas however these needed to be narrowed down to the ones we knew would work best and
give the best outcome to the music video.
In our video we decided to have a black and white colour scheme at the beginning of the video to try and enhance the
narrative we were creating, we felt this would be the best way to help create the narrative in the video.
Within out video, we chose locations that we thought helped bring the narrative through. The locations that we chose
allowed us to get some good shots of the sea such as the waves crashing against the rocks and waves being visible
behind the characters in the video. These gave us some really good shots that we were able to look through and choose
the best footage to use in the video that we felt looked the best.
4. Ancillary tasks
The ancillary tasks were done individually unlike the music video. The digitak and magazine advert were influenced by the music video.
My magazine advert was also created through the influence of the music video. For this, I used
the same image as the front cover on the CD as it helps to link the two products together. For
this magazine, just like the CD cover, I wanted to focus on the relationship and due to this I
used the same image of josh and Hannah holding hands.
I wanted to keep a modern look to the advert so I decided to use a plain text style that is bold so
it stands out along with underlining it with a white line to further stand it out. I wanted to keep
the style simple and modern as the audience of this project is teenagers/young adults and I feel
like this would be something that would draw them in.
My digipak was created through the influence of the music video. I used images taken from the video itself to use on the
digipak. I wanted to portray the relationship between the characters to give an insight of the video, making sure to focus on
Hannah being with both josh and jade to show that she is questioning her sexuality. I also continued the theme of black and
white like the video but also including sparks of colour.
For the front cover image, I decided to use an image of Hannah and josh holding hands to establish their relationship at first
glance, just like the video does.
5. Synergy across the 3 tasks
The location that we used the most for our video was ogmore by sea which is shown clearly in the video and on the ancillary tasks. We kept the
image of the waves in the background and it can be seen in all images used. The opening shot of Hannah is of her walking towards the water,
which is the same thing she does with josh at the beginning and later with jade towards the end of the video. However, you dont see the shot of
Hannah and Jade in the ancillary tasks,
6. Synergy across the 3 tasks
Throughout our video, the use of colour was a key aspect that we included and something that I included across the ancillary tasks. For the music
video we used a black and white effect at the beginning before going into colour. I then wanted to include this throughout the ancillary tasks so I
used shots from the music video itself to include on the digipak and the magazine advert. While doing this I continue the theme of black and white
as well as colour on the digipak. For the image of jade and hannah on the digipak I added an overlay of some coloured lights as the original image
had a lot of coloured lights before I added the black and white effect, this was done to show that just like in the music video Jade makes hannah
happy and everything colourful.
7. Synergy across the 3 tasks
Typography within the three tasks is something I took into consideration when coming to creating the pieces. For
the music video, as a group we decided to go with a plain text, however, I didnt use the same typography across
the digipak and magazine advert. I used the same text for the ancillary tasks as the magazine is advertising the
digipak and therefore they need to be similar in the way they look. The text used on the ancillary tasks is the
same as the bands which is quite simple but yet stands out. The text used on the music video is very similar and
is very thin writing. I feel as if the typography used is quite modern and stands out to the audience.
8. Binary opposition by Levi Strauss
Music video
In the music video, binary opposition was
used in the use of different shots of Hannah
and Josh alongside the shots of Jade and
Hannah. The shots of Josh and Hannah are
in black and white showing that there is a
sense of sadness and unhappiness in those
shots, whereas in the shots with jade they
are in colour emphasising that Jade makes
Hannah happy compared to josh.
Digipak
Again, just like the music video, the digipak
also incorporates the theory of binary
opposition as there is a use of contrasting
images of Hannah and Josh holding hands,
Hannah and Jade together surrounded by
coloured lights and Hannah on her own
walking towards the water.
Magazine advert
The magazine advert doesn't incorporate
binary opposition as well as the others as
there is only one image used which is of
Hannah and Josh holding hands, portraying
their relationship in colour instead of black
and white. It doesn’t show anything to do
with Hannah and Jade which is the opposite
relationship to Hannah and Josh.
