1. Q1. In what ways does your
medis use, develop or
challenge forms and
conventions of real media?
2. In order to create an conventional music video i had to do research into the genre of the song
i chose which is pop. I also decided to incorporate the theme of the song i chose which is
love and heartbreak. I did this by doing case studies of music videos and CD digipaks. The
case studies I did were Beyonce- Irreplaceable and Miley Cyrus- Stay. These music videos
allowed me to see the conventions of a music video in the same genre i chose to do. I feel
that i have created a conventional music video due to the fact that it has similarities to the
case studies i looked at.
For example in the video Irreplaceable, Beyonce was going through a break up- this was
evident in the beginning of the video as you saw her throwing her boyfriend out. The
inspiration i took from this is i made it clear from the beginning that the couple were breaking
up through the silent argument in the park in the first scene. Another example is the Stay
video, Miley Cyrus has flashbacks of the happy times in her relationship with her boyfriend
throughout the video. In my video this is also done but illustrated in a different way as the
flashbacks in my video are in black and white which connotes that it is in the past. The artist i
chose, Miley Cyrus, is typically quite sexual. She uses her body to sell her music now as
opposed to in the past when she used to act on her age and vulnerability and use her
emotions to sell her music. I decided to do what the old miley use to do as i feel that my initial
target audience would relate better to this Miley.
3. • As you can see the left image is miley circa 2006 and the right
miley is circa 2013. Miley now is extremely revealing and
certainly a risk taker. The left Miley is sweet and can be quite
vulnerable. The reason i chose to play on the past Miley is
because i feel that my target audience (teenagers) can realte
more as the Miley on the right is now an adult.
4. As mentioned before the beginning of my music video has a
break up scene. I decided to not use dialogue as the case
studies i looked at didnt have any apart from the actual song.
Throughout the video there are flashbacks which means that
my music video does not have a chronological order. It has a
beginning and an end but not a structured middle. I feel that i
had to make the beginning and end make sense to the target
audience in order for the storyline to be clear on what was
going on. The beginning scene is like a prologue without
dialogue as it gives an introduction to what is about to
happen.
5. Lighting
• The lighting used in the location scenes were natural
lighting. On the day of filming it was raining and very
dreary. I felt that this was the perfect weather to film my
music video as it was the perfect setting of winter for
what i planned as my theme is supposed to be dark and
sad i think the only way i could reflect that well is with the
weather and that worked out pefectly as i started out with
a shot of the clouds which set the tone for the whole
music video. For the studio shoot, i used artificial
lighting. This created a cool effect as some parts were
dark which created a good ambient for the video.
6. Lip Syncing
• Lis syncing was essential for this music
video because working with sound is very
time consuming when editing. Also when
editing i had to sync the audio to the clips.
I found this difficult as i have never done it
before. Lip syncing made the video look
professional and realsitic as it is a pop
music video convention which makes my
product look like a real media product.
7. Mise-en-scene
• The costumes i chose to use were researched very carefully
(presentations were made) as i had to make sure the
costumes reflected the settings, themes and overall
atmosphere of the video and print products. The setting of
the majority of the video is in a park as i felt i would get alot
of footage there around the trees and scenery, also this
location was free and accessible to film in as i had problems
with other locations. The studio location is used for all the
performance based scenes as this a convention of music
videos so i followed it. The props i used were appropriate for
the scenes. The umbrella was there to connote the bad
weather as it was raining and the mobile phone is there to
show that she was waiting.
8. Camera
• I started the video with a pan down from
the sky to an establishing shot of the park
and its scenery to the first scene which is
the break up scene. Throughout making
my media products i have used a variety
of camera shots and angles (close ups,
midshots, longshots) in order to keep it
professional and like other real media
products. I kept most of the shots upclose
in order for the emotions to be evident in
the artists face.
9. Print Products
• When making my CD digipak and advert, i took into consideration
the layout, fonts, colours, imagery and themes. I looked at a number
of case studies to ensure i knew what the conventions of a print
product are. I looked at Gwen Stefani, Jessie J, beyonce and Katy
perry. These were good examples of all font, imagery and layout as
there were a variety.
10. When producing my print products i wanted to make sure that the CD, magazine
advert and music video would all link together and have the same housetyle.
The imagery used for the front cover is a midshot of the artist on a bench. I chose
this image because i felt the background of it worked well with my colour scheme
and also the artist was looking at the audience which is essential for a pop music
videoas i have gathered from the case studies. This is alos shows a sense of
personalisation as if the audience is being spoken to by the artist as the name of
the song is 'adore you'. I also linked the media products by taking the location
shots at the same location as i filmed the music video.
