MARGINALIZATION (Different learners in Marginalized Group
Evaluation
1. How effective is the combination of you main productand ancillary
texts?
Both ancillary texts link.
o They both follow the same theme and house style and include
the same symbols with slight differences. The symbol of the
stick people and the bin is a metaphor for their feelings, they are
throwing their feelings for each other away as they aren’t
together anymore.
The main task relates to the ancillary texts slightly
o When planning the music video, my partner and I planned to
base the video around heartbreak but also to have a band.
When making the video and the ancillary, it came to mind that
the rest of the band was hardly included. It seems to feature a
lot of the main singer and not the band, after realising this; we
added a performance, which includes all of them.
o My ancillary includes the whole band, it is not focused on just
the lead singer and that is why they are all included in the
ancillary, my music video is part of a story to an album and not a
single. That is why we have a band and not a solo artist. The
lead singer stars in the video because it is his story, not the
bands.
Colour
o The colour of the music video, poster and Digipack all link to the
music genre. They are all dark, all three relate because they are
dark and gloomy. The pictures of the band on the ancillary are
both black and white and are one of the first things you see on
the poster and Digipack. This image isn’t in the music video
however the music video is dark and gloomy.
Font/Typography
o The fonts that I used for the poster and the Digipack are both
the same. The title of the album has the same font for both
ancillary texts.
Representation
o The band is represented to be real, they’re not scripted and their
songs are based on past experiences and feelings. The video
can show this and so can the ancillary texts. They’re not a
popular band and they’re new, they’re still in their teens and
they’re learning about life and their relationships with people.
They’re learning that not everything works the way you want it
too.
The poster and Digipack relate to the music video because it
references the song title and promotes it.
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Music video
o My partner and I have a focus group for our music video. We
showed them our initial ideas and they gave us their feedback.
We based our music video around our audience feedback.
2. Poster
o When creating the poster, I started off with silhouettes of the
band members with the members in their own box and the lead
singers colour being different. When finishing this idea, it looked
like an amateur created it and I didn’t like the look of it. I
received feedback from my audience suggesting that I should
add something else as the silhouettes was a good idea.
o I created a symbol of a heart, which was broken and was being
held together by a ribbon but had two hands pulling on it. This
was a metaphor to the theme of the album (heartbreak). I made
a poster with these two ideas together and it looked good, I was
happier with it but the font I used for ‘FUSE’ didn’t look good. It
was too thin and my audience gave me feedback saying that it
should be bigger and bolder and therefore I changed the font.
o I had a lot of alternatives for the poster but my final design was
what I learned from my audience. My audience said that I should
have a picture of the band as well as the symbol. This meant
that I got rid of the silhouettes. I also changed the symbol as my
audience said that a different symbol would be better which has
the same meaning. After receiving this, I made a symbol of a
boy and girl standing next to a bin with their hearts in the bin. I
learned that to create a professional looking poster you need to
ask your audience for their opinions, as they know the genre
and music best.
Digipack
o I went through the same thing with my Digipack as I did with my
poster. The symbols and the designs were the same as I made
my Digipack straight after my poster.
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
Symbol
o Indie rock albums typically have a symbol that relate to the
album or it’s the band logo. I followed this convention by having
a symbol that relates to the meaning of the album.
Colour
o Depending on the song, the Indie rock videos are typically seen
to be black and white, slow and gloomy. I followed this
convention by making my poster and Digipack black and also
my video is close to black and white, it has a little bit of colour in
it.
Actor
o After watching indie rock videos then the actors are typically the
band. We had the lead singer be the main actor and the story
based around him. We also included the band, as they are part
of the lead singers story.
Digipack
o The back cover of my Digipack includes the username to their
social media. This is unusual for any album, as it is not usually
3. seen on the Digipack/album. I decided to challenge convention
as the generation that listens to this style of music and younger
generations are all on social media; people of this generation
learn about new bands and any new albums from the Internet
and social media. Therefore I decided to advertise their social
media on the back of the album.
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research,
planning and evaluation stages?
Poster
o When making my poster, I used Adobe Photoshop to create it. I
was already familiar with Photoshop and I decided to use this to
get a professional looking poster. Firstly, I used the Internet to
research indie rock posters. I noticed they are usually based
around their hit single and have a symbol to represent the
meaning of the album or it’s the symbol of the album.
