2. A MESSAGE TO OUR COMMUNITY
From the Executive Director & Incoming President
Dear Friends,
What a privilege it is to have a front row seat to watch the power of community. May this Report
to the Public be a reminder of the amplifying effect of collaborative giving.
In 2019, our donors gave more than $4.4 million in new contributions. It’s part of our community
fabric to care about others, so it’s no surprise that our donors also generously donate to the
causes that will support people they may never know.
We capitalized on Lilly Endowment Inc.’s GIFT VII program, a $500,000 matching grant
opportunity. The goal of the matching campaign is to encourage more individuals, organizations
and businesses in our community to participate in philanthropy. Yet again, donors quickly took
advantage of this opportunity, and we secured the $500,000 grant to grow The Fund for Dubois
County, our unrestricted endowment pool. We continue to be generously supported by Lilly
Endowment, Inc., and will pursue additional funding opportunities in 2020.
This year, because of thousands of generous donors, the Community Foundation grew its
financial assets to an all-time high of $47.1 million.
Grants exceeding $1.8 million were awarded to more than 300 nonprofit organizations. Our
grants continue to reach all corners of the county and all walks of life.
New raised garden beds were built for residents of Northwood Good Samaritan. Grief counseling
services for individuals, families and schools were expanded across the county. An addiction
expert reached over 3,000 people, including youth at all four school corporations, who learned
about substance abuse, addiction and recovery. New AEDs were placed across the county in
community gathering spaces. And, we ended our year of grantmaking with $25,000 in classroom
grants to our local schools.
Our investments achieved a record 24.1% return. Our investment strategy continues to be a
balance between ensuring long-term sustainability and making an impact in our community now.
Estate gifts made a significant impact on our organization, totaling over $500,000. Strategies to
increase planned giving for the benefit of our community remain a priority.
Our role in strengthening the community through strong leadership by bringing people together
around common challenges and opportunities is vital to our mission.
We heard heightened concern about issues we had always cared about — mental health,
substance abuse, food insecurity and work force retention. And so, we took action and went
deep to better understand the root cause of these issues affecting our community. New
partnerships were shaped, and additional resources and research were sought to more
effectively address these issues, recognizing that these aren’t problems any one group or sector
can solve on its own.
Next year, we will embark on our 25th year. The sky’s the limit for what we can accomplish with
the support of our dedicated community members. Thanks to you, the Community Foundation
will embrace the future with vision and courage. And together, we will accomplish more than any
one of us could alone.

4. The Legacy Society of the Dubois County Community Foundation was founded
to recognize and honor the generous donors who have included the
Community Foundation in their estate plans. Too often, these gifts are
unrecognized because they come at the end of their donors’ lives. The Legacy
