2. What Is Representation?
The description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way.
Representing aspects of ‘reality’, for example: people, places, events, etc.
These can be presented through speech, writing, and still or moving
pictures.
3. The social groups from the disco era were commonly from the African-American, homosexual, or Latino
communities, and very much enjoyed by the majority of the female society.
Therefore I incorporated certain elements into my product in order to represent some of these social groups,
especially the female society.
As I have previously stated in my audience research, I am aiming to represent the older generation, while also
modernizing my product to appeal and represent late teens and young adults, also.
4. By using a female teenager
as the main model/image for
my magazine, it implies that
this product is suitable for this
age range, and enables
teenage readers to relate.
The dress that the model is
wearing helps represent the
older generation as some may
recognise this from the disco
era, whether it was their
childhood, or a blast from the
past.
As the dress is quirky, this could
represent people who are also
quirky and like to express
themselves.
My mode of address uses full
English sentences/phrases, as
these are suitable for all age
ranges. I did not use
abbreviations, initials or slang,
therefore older generations
are able to understand, and
younger generations do not
feel patronised.
I have followed this on all
pages of my magazine.
The large use of pink clearly
supports my aim of a
female audience.
The puff offers a ‘free disco
photo shoot’ which would
represent those who enjoy
fashion; particularly that of the
disco era.
Having an internet
appearance modernises the
product; adapting to the
constant change in the
market. This would appeal to
all ages who have access to
the internet; especially teens.
5. By using a young man for
the model of my smaller
images, I am able to
represent the stereotypical
views and attractions of a
young female audience, as
these images may appeal
to them.
I have used a large amount
of pink again; following my
house style, while continuing
to represent a female, or
perhaps a homosexual,
audience.
My editorial profile is very
quirky; much like the rest of
the magazine.
Consequently, this
enhances the
representation of quirky and
expressive people.
6. By using polaroid style
for my smaller images,
I was aiming to
represent all ages.
Polaroid photos are
retro things, that those
of the older
generations may
remember or
reminisce. However,
the popularity of them
is still very high today,
and many younger
generations are still
using them, so this can
appeal to all ages.
The mass use of the
colour pink continues
on this page, creating
an extremely feminine
feel about the page;
enhancing the
feminine
representation.
As the model is lying
down in a relaxed, yet
playful, way, this can
show that the
magazine is fun but
laid back;
representing people
with a similar
personality.
