The document discusses how the author has targeted different social groups for their indie music magazine. They have targeted a mainly male audience through the genre of music and color scheme of red and blue. While aimed at males, the colors would not put off female audiences. The magazine has also targeted youth aged 13-19 through varied fonts and images of younger artists. Finally, the magazine targets subcultures like goths, emos, and hipsters who are drawn to the genres of indie music and the unconventional magazine design.
2. WHAT IS A SOCIAL GROUP?
A social group is a collection of people who share similar norms, values
and
characteristics, social groups can be divided based on gender, age,
religion, ethnicity
and subcultures.
For this evaluation question I will be addressing how I have been able to
attract
different age groups, genders and subcultures.
3. When it comes to gender the indie music
genre and the colour scheme involved is
generically targeted at a male audience,
and therefore this is who I will aim my
magazine at. However with changing
gender norms within society and the
lines being blurred between masculinity
and femininity it would not be
uncommon for this music magazine to
be able to attract a niche female
audience.
For example the colour scheme for the
magazine being red and blue does well
to attract a male audience, it also does
not put off female audiences as females
are less likely to be put off by
generically male orientated colour’s, if
the roles were reversed however it
would be far less common for a male to
be attracted to a music magazine with
female orientated colour’s such as pink
and purple.
4. My indie music magazine is
targeted mainly at the youth, an
age group of between 13-19. I
have been able to do this through
the wide variety of fonts which
makes the magazine pop out
more, it catches peoples eyes. To
the older audiences it may seem
unconventional and unorganised
but to the youth this makes it
more interesting and more
appealing, therefore attracting a
younger audience. The use of a
younger artist would also be more
appealing to younger audiences
as they would be able to relate
more with him, he also looks
conventionally indie and so this
would also be more relatable to
my audience. The only issue this
would do is prohibit the older
audiences.
5. In terms of subcultures indie music is
generically targeted at the subcultures,
Goths, Emo’s, Scene Kids and Hipsters.
These subcultures are all youth
subcultures, these groups will dismantle
after youth. Targeting your product at
subcultures is good as they usually have
a strong community and share familiar
norms, this means that with word of
mouth the magazine would do well as
people would need to know about the
indie genre in order to be able to stay in
the subculture and maintain similar
norms as their peers.
The subcultures of Goth’s and Emo’s
generically use darker colour’s and so the
red and blue I have used would be
effective in appealing to them, the scene
kids like things that are unconventional
as do hipsters and so the wide variety of
fonts and layout would appeal to them
