Characters with mental illness are portrayed
as…
#Movies4MentalHealth
"Messy"
"Selfish"
Scary
I see a lot of weird sexualization of mentally ill
women, which glamorizes disorders like BPD,
bulimia, anorexia, bipolar, etc
In Skins, mental illness is almost romanticized or
portrayed as edgy
I forget what movie this was in, but I saw a movie in
which BPD was referred to as "best p***y disorder"
jokingly

How have you experienced the concept of "mental
health" within your own cultural communities?
The conversation does not exist at alll
Silenced
The conversation does not exist
Dad referred to psychologists as "shrinks"
There's a lot of "it's a choice" mentality
Its very stigmatized
People say you should hide it and put forth a good image
bringing up mental health is "burdensome to others"

What makes it difficult to reach out for help?
#Movies4MentalHealth
Internalized shame of seeking help
Fear, embarrassment, unsure how other person
will respond
Self-blame, feeling like a failure
Not knowing if someone you don't want to find out
you're seeking help will find out
Internalized shame for seeking help also
embarrassed
not having the language to talk about your
problems, especially if you're in a
culture/community where mental health isn't
discussed

What are some practices that help support
your wellness?
#Movies4MentalHealth
Gratitude
Self-soothe kit- one object for each of
the senses. good at grounding me
Especially when they are things i am
afraid of or ashamed of its saying it
out loud, therapy is extra helpful for
this
Hopeful
The line about most people who
struggle with mental health have
broken hearts got me

What did you think?
How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
It reminded me how difficult it has been for
me to find a therapist that is culturally
sensitive and/or from my same cultural
background
Tension- that's the best way I can put it-
the tension of unmet needs and how deep
that runs systemically

How can we support ourselves and
others?
#Movies4MentalHealth
Language & empathy are two areas in
which I'm constantly trying to grow
we can ask others in our lives
questions/ check ins rather than
putting the burden on them to bring it
up
Always giving each other and
ourselves room to learn.
