Concrete
OUTLINE
• Introduction
• Activity 1: hunting for objects made of
concrete.
• Activity 2: comparing different kinds of
cement.
• Activity 3: comparing concrete
formulations.
• Activity 4 : testing properties of concrete
• Product Idea
INTRODUCTION
• So what is concrete ?
• A construction material which is of mixture of
cement , water , aggregates , and in some cases
admixtures .
• Where do we use it ?
• Versatile construction material , adaptable to a wide
agricultural and residential uses , as it is strong
durable versatile and economical
• So we did 4 activities to test concrete and to come
out with a new project that will hopefully succeed
ACTIVITIES (1)
“HUNTING FOR OBJECTS MADE OF CONCRETE”
-First We went to see what kind of concrete was offered to
use
- We learned that there are many types of concrete like :
green concrete … etc.
- And the concrete is the most commonly used
infrastructure material .
ACTIVITIES (2)
“COMPARING DIFFERENT KINDS OF CONCRETE”
-we took an amount of concrete formulations like sugar , cement
and water and salt ,cement and water
-we mixed them all each one in its own cup and left it to inforce for
a couple of days
-after a couple of days we saw that
1-sugar acts as a negative catalyst ; it made the hardening of
cement much slower
2-salt acts as a positive catalyst ; it increased the rate of hardening
process.
ACTIVITIES (3)
“COMPARING DIFFERENT CONCRETE FORMULATIONS”
• part 2Part 1
-Comparing the densities of
different aggregate ratios fine
- We Saw that the fine agg /
course agg is kind of the equal
if the density increases
- making concrete samples
- All the groups did the same
samples but our group did a
different sample which was
sample (E+)
ACTIVITIES (4)
“TESTING PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE”
• -testing properties of concrete .
• - the more more water it required to break , the stronger the sample
is .
FINAL PROJECT:
(BIODEGRADABLE CONCRETE)
Our project idea :
by adding biodegradable polymers to the concrete
mixture .
To make biodegradable concrete , we can build
biodegradable houses for workers made by
biodegradable concrete to solve the traffic problems in
the day and to help the quality of the building
FINAL PROJECT:
(BIODEGRADABLE CONCRETE)
• How it works :
• We made biodegradable concrete that is mainly
used for building Temporary houses for workers ,
and its pointing to :
• - To be very beneficial as we will Save money and
space and its going to be a huge step that will
make a difference in 2022 and will help to build
faster and to not Impact on the environment .
FINAL PROJECT BENEFITS:
(BIODEGRADABLE CONCRETE)
Benefits :
• 1- it can save up money by preventing bus rides for
workers.
• 2- a place were workers can stay in for the project time .
• 3- eco-friendly .
• 4- the process will be faster and better quality and
perfected .
• 5- the workers will be close to the project place .
• 6- it will be easier to get rid of the buildings afterwards.
(BIODEGRADABLE CONCRETE)
HYPOTHESIS :
If you add 100 grams of cement + 100 grams of
biodegradable polymers (food wastes) + and 90 ml of water
And leave the sample to dry for 24 hours or more
You will end up with an eco-friendly concrete.
But it’s not solid enough and it has a bad smell.
It needs improvements.
BIODEGRADABLE CONCRETE
METHODS AND MATERIALS
Materials :
• We can add any biodegradable wastes we have at home to concrete
make it biodegradable concrete Like :Banana peels ,egg shells and
fronds in addition to water .
Methods :
• we made 3 samples the first sample : has the biodegradable wastes
mixed with water only
• The second sample : has only cement with water
• The third sample :
• has a mixture of half the portion of cement + biodegradable food
wastes + water.
• After we left the samples all to dry
• we put the third sample in water and waited till the concrete
decomposed.
BIODEGRADABLE CONCRETE
RESULTS:
-We came out with biodegradable concrete that is
eco-friendly, very useful and doesn’t exploit large
area.
- The smell of recycled food wastes needs to be
improved
CONCLUSIONS :
-We learned the importance of team work , and
how to work together.
- We benefited from albairaq program a lot we
worked with different types of concrete and we
invented biodegradable concrete .
BIODEGRADABLE CONCRETE
RECOMMENDATIONS:
• We highly recommend to make further
studies on our biodegradable concrete, and
think of methods to use the biodegradable
food wastes as part of our study. Also we
recommend to apply our
• product and get the support from sponsors
to improve it and to make it stronger so it
gets Spread worldwide
ACKNOWLEDGMENT:
Many thanks to our teachers, school and AL-Bairaq
team from Center for Advanced Materials (CAM), Qatar
University for supporting us during our journey with a
AL-Bairaq.
Also, we would like to thank the sponsors UNESCO,
Qatar National Commission, Ras Gas and Shell.
