2. Outline
• Introduction
• Activity 1: Testing different kind of ice
• Activity 2: Hunting for composite materials
• Activity 3: Exploring difference between
strength and stiffness
• Activity 4: Testing a foam composite for
strength and stiffness
• Design Project (designing a fishing pole)
• Product Idea: Gloves with magnet pieces
3. Introduction
• A composite material is a material made from
two or more constituent materials with
significantly different physical or chemical
properties that, when combined, produce a
material with characteristics different from
the individual components.
4. Activity 1 : testing different kind of ice
• Sample (1) : Water only
• Sample (2) : Water + Tissues
• Sample (3) : Water + straw + cotton
• We dropped the 3 samples from same height
• sample 3 was strongest one and sample 1 was
the weakest one
• Ice composite is stronger than pure ice
6. Activity 3 : Exploring the difference
between strength and stiffenss
We tested different materials for strength and
flexibility
Strongest weakest
1-Steel rod
2-Nylon Cord
3-plastic rod
4-wood rod
5-pasta
Most flexibility least flexibility
1- Nylon cord
2-Iron
3-Plastic rod
4-Wood rod
5-Pasta
7. Activity 4 : testing a foam composite
for strength and stiffness
• Sample 1 : Plain foam beam
• Sample 2 : One side paper
• Sample 3 : Two side paper
• Than we compared the 3 samples
and took measurements
• Result :
sample 3 was the strongest one and sample 1
was the weakest one
Foam composite is more stronger than plain foam
9. Final Project:
Gloves with Magnet pieces
• Introduction and Rationale:
Many accidents can happen for the carpenters
because they are using dangerous tools that can
slide down from their hands and hurt them. The
aim of our product is to protect the carpenters from
this accidents .
10. Gloves with Magnet pieces
Hypothesis:
The gloves will have small magnet pieces that
attract the iron tools and prevent it from sliding
down
11. Gloves with Magnet pieces
Methods and Materials
we used:
1- Gloves
2- Small magnet pieces
3- Sponge pieces
The small magnet pieces will be fixed in the
gloves and surrounded by the sponge to protect
the carpenter’s hands
12. Gloves with Magnet pieces
Results:
• The Gloves with magnet pieces will :
1- make the carpenter works easily
2- prevent the tools from sliding down
3- protect the carpenter from accidents
13. Gloves with Magnet pieces
Recommendations:
• We recommend more testing on the gloves
• we recommend our gloves to be sold
everywhere
14. Conclusions
We got knowledge from Albairaq workshops
about the composites and the importance of
Composites in our lives. We trained on how to
do a presentation and how to think of creative
ideas.
