The discovery of the New World brought many irreversible changes not only for the European
countries, but to the natives of the land that was being discovered. The sense of exploration began
expanding more and more among the European powers. Every time the explorers invaded, they
would be more avaricious and aggressive against the natives of the land. Along with diseases and
inhumane treatments, the European powers also brought education to the uneducated crowds of
areas such as India, Africa, and China. The main intention of the foreign powers was to
Europeanize the natives of these lands and enslave them into doing the European s dirty work. To
attain such results, the Europeans tried converting the natives lifestyles completely. These
conversions ranged from substituting the natives religionwith Christianity, to the way they labored,
and to the way they portrayed themselves. All the changes the natives had to go through, are clearly
seen in excerpts of Feng Guifen, Afghani, and Gandhi. Each of these men describe the different
aspects changed by the Europeans, for instance Feng Guifen describes the education system brought
by the Europeans and how that affected Asia. Afghani describes the input of science in Islam, while
Gandhi describes the cold heartedness that has spread among the natives and how they have

Introduction In medieval times, illnesses were a common problem associated with everyday life.
However, with the condition of the public hygiene, the lack of medical knowledge, and the
quality of the medicines as it were, it is not surprising that the circumstances surrounding illnesses
were drastically different from the modern age. People got heavily sick from the lightest of colds,
and for some people, it was a matter of life and death. Although differences in the social hierarchy
changed whom they sought to ask for cures, the medieval society had numerous medical practices
to offer that was affordable, and suitable for their needs. While physicians, surgeons, and midwives
treated patients of their specialty, barbers, priests, and sorcerers were also responsible for offering...
People also used the hidden power of herbs and plants, those that were deemed as natural magic
to heal the sick. However, among the numerous healing practices in the medieval period, there
were services provided in religious and magical forms. While it is true that natural, religious, and
magical cures overlap and seem similar in some ways, some illnesses were cured using religious
and magical responses more than other illnesses. This essay will identify what these illnesses were,
explore the medieval beliefs on the cause of illnesses, and examine why these responses occurred
through the circumstances in medieval times.

Abina Mansah: An Overlooked History Abina Mansah, like many other women in her time, was a
young Akan woman who was wrongfully enslaved by her captors. Although slaverywas made
illegal in 1875, many important men continued to seize youthful slaves female ones in particular,
because they were less likely to run away and seek liberation. Despite this, Abina refused to be a
slave under the authority of her master, Quamina Eddoo. With the help of court interpreter James
Davis, she attempted to force the court system to hear her voice. Young enslaved women like Abina
are often talked about in history, but never the ones to write historical documents themselves. Their
voices are hidden beneath the voices of important men, and this left women like Abina frustrated
and angry. As a student of the history of gender, Abina s story and her initiative to challenge the
authority others had over her shows us the importance of being heard, and how young women s
expressions are often disregarded and deemed less significant than those of important men.
