2. Katingan – Mentaya Research Site
• The KMP is located in two districts, Katingan and
Kotawaringin Timur, Central Kalimantan.
• The peat swamp forest spans 157,875 hectares, with
96% being forested. The remaining 4% is a non-
forested area (RMU internal report. 2022)
• The peat in KMP research site is > 17,000 years old
(Hapsari et al., 2022. Global Change Biology)
• The carbon stock in the ecosystem ranges from 1700 –
2100 tons of carbon per hectare. (Saragi et al.,
2018. Mitig. Adapt. Stra. Glob. Chang; Darusman et al.,
2022. Climate)
• The average depth of peat is 6.6 meters and its carbon
stock is estimated to be around 0.5 Gt C (RMU Internal
survey. 2023)
