2. What is Leadership and
who is a Leader
Leadership is the art of motivating a group of people
to act towards achieving a common goal.
A leader is the inspiration and director of the action.
A leader is the person in the group who has a
combination of personality and skills that makes
others want to follow him/her.

3. Types of Leaders
There are various Leadership Styles which people
follow. These are mainly:
Autocratic
Laissez-faire
Democratic
These styles adopted by different leaders, make
many companies what they are today. Each in its
own way acts as a motivating factor for the group.

4. Leadership Styles
In many businesses or organizations, even a simple
example like a school, the Head will have a different
approach to the way he/she handles and guides
people.
Therefore leadership styles are the different attitudes
or approaches to deal with people while in a position
of authority.
5. Autocratic
Autocratic leadership is
when the leader of the
group needs his/her
orders to followed
without question. This
is usually a one-way
communication and the
employees have to
follow what their leader
says.

6. Paternalistic
Leader acts as a ‘father
figure’
Paternalistic leader
makes decision but
may consult
Believes in the need to
support staff

7. Laissez-faire
In this style of leadership, the employees are free to
do whatever they want: organize their own work,
make decisions, implement activities, etc.
Communication is chaotic as there are no definite
paths or instructions.

8. Bureaucratic
Leaders impose strict and
systematic discipline on
the followers and demand
business-like conduct in
the workplace
Leaders are empowered
via the office they hold -
position power
Follower should obey
leaders because authority
is bestowed upon the
leader as part of their
position in the company

9. Democratic
This is a very well organized
system in which there is
two-way communication.
Most of the future plans are
discussed with the
employees. Then the final
decision is made by the
leader through a measure of
participative voting or a
meeting.
This acts a motivator as the
employees are involved in
the discussion and decision.

12. Which one is the most
effective
It depends from organization to organization and
from situation to situation, and hence in my opinion,
a combination of the above styles with an emphasis
on the democratic style, yields the best results for a
organization.
