auto mechanic Joseph Smith approached
Carlie, took her by the hand, and led her
to his 1992 station wagon. Carlie

to her abductor.
Smith had a long history of drug

trying to kidnap a woman in 1977
Carlie’s body was found on February 6,

Why Are We Here?
Jennifer Ewing, 54
On Tuesday, July 25, 2006, Jennifer Ewing, a 54 year old
mother of 3 headed out for a bike ride on the popular
Silver Comet trail.
Jennifer routinely rode a 50-mile round trip portion of
the trail several times a week.
Michael Ledford was a professional criminal. Ledford -
a convicted rapist - served a 10 year prison sentence for
an attack on a woman in 1991 & was serving a 10 year
probation period when he attacked Ewing.
Ledford was later arrested after he entered the Dallas
Police Department the same day Ewing was reported
missing. He had severe trauma to his genitals and told
police that a prostitute had injured him. Ewing’s body
was later discovered off the trail.
Lori Bresnahan 47 & Her 10 Year Old Daughter
David J. Renz, a computer whiz,
somehow removed his monitoring
device from a previously Child
Pornography charge. Renz followed the
child out of the gym, kidnapping the
child and Lori. The girl was able to
escape while Lori was being stabbed.
 Know that Nothing works
100% of the time
 If you can talk your way
out of an attack try to calm
the person and persuade
them not to carry out the
attack
 The goal is to keep talking
as you start walking
 Start yelling which can make you a harder
target from the attention you draw.
 Follow your instincts!
 Never give up!
 Once you make the decision to fight, fight as
if you’re the third monkey on the ramp to
Noah’s Ark !!!
 The goal is to distract or injure your attacker
for your opportunity to escape !
 Forced Teaming
 Charm & Niceness
 Too Many Details
 Loan Sharking
 The Unsolicited Promise
 Discounting The Word
NO
 Look around for people
who don’t belong or
seem to be predators
 You see the same face or
car in two places may
mean you are being
followed
 Stay Alert & Stay Alive
 Any strike delivered needs to be at 100%
power to a vulnerable area (eyes, nose, groin
etc.)
 Always look for the chance to escape and
run away
 Never let strangers inside your home for any reason.
Ex. Use the phone, a drink of water etc.
 If you are home alone and someone comes to the door;
Don’t open the door, but tell them your parent is busy
and to go away.
 NEVER enter your home if there is signs of forced
entry
 Have your keys ready for easy
entry into your car
 Check the area as you approach
your car
 Park in well lit areas
 Know more than one
way to your home,
work etc.
 Don’t let your car get
below ¼ of a tank
 If you break down,
remain in your vehicle
and call 911 if in a
remote or desolate area
 Always be aware of your
surroundings
 Walk with confidence
 If wearing an IPod or other
device, keep the music low
enough that you can hear
what is going on around you.
 Always be aware of your
surroundings
 Walk with confidence
 If wearing an IPod or other
device, keep the music low
enough that you can hear
what is going on around you.
 Walk with a friend or if alone, walk near another group
 If a vehicle stops and asks you for directions, avoid
getting near the car. Go in the other direction
 Try to avoid areas that are remote and isolated
 Park in well lit areas
 Never use ATM machines at
night. Get cash back inside
the store
 You can have security or an
employee walk with you out
to you car
 If you choose to carry a weapon of any sort, you need to
train with that weapon and become proficient in it’s
use.
 Train the way you will fight because you will fight the
way you train.
 Have a plan
 Choose NOT to be a victim
 Don’t be in denial…… It could happen to you.
 Be aware of your surroundings at all times
 Trust your instincts or “gut feeling”
 Whatever decision you make, do
it 100%
 Never leave the scene of an attack
with an attacker, it greatly lowers
survivability rates
 Stay Alert… Stay Alive !!!!
 Always think,
Escape…Escape…Escape !!!

Editor's Notes

  1. An upstate sicko cut off his electronic monitoring bracelet before carrying out a savage crime — stabbing a school librarian to death and raping a 10-year-old girl, cops said. Investigators were probing Saturday how 29-year-old David Renz, who was previously charged with possessing child pornography, managed to disable his monitoring device. Renz, a computer whiz, has already faced jailhouse justice in the wake of his sickening crime — suffering a broken nose in a prison fight. He was beaten inside a holding cell at the Onondaga County Justice Center on Friday — a day after the attack. Cops say Renz abducted 47-year-old Lori Bresnahan and the girl as they left a gymnastics class at a mall outside Syracuse late Thursday. Renz followed the child out of the CNY Gym Centre about 9 p.m., authorities said.  He tied up Bresnahan and then raped the girl inside the Northern Mall parking lot in the town of Clay. Then, he drove the woman’s car to a wooded area with both victims tied up inside. The girl managed to escape while Renz was repeatedly stabbing Bresnahan, authorities said. The girl was later found by a passing motorist. It was unclear how she escaped. Renz was captured near the wooded area after the driver who found the girl told a 911 dispatcher he saw a man running from the scene. Hours before pouncing on his victims, Renz methodically deactivated and removed his electronic ankle bracelet, authorities said. He had been outfitted with the device in January when federal authorities released him from custody on child pornography charges. The ankle bracelet is supposed to immediately alert probation officers if it has been tampered with, but the technically savvy Renz beat the system. RELATED: FORMER SCHOOL ATTENDANT ALLEGED SOURCE OF CHILD PORN It wasn’t until 11:30 p.m. that officials at the company responsible for the device noticed that there had been no movement from the bracelet for hours and notified the U.S. Probation Office, according to the Syracuse Post-Standard. By that time, the librarian was dead, the girl had been raped and Renz was already in police custody.  He had been outfitted with the device in January when federal authorities released him from custody on child pornography charges. Reps for the Colorado-based firm BI, which works closely with correction officials, could not be reached Saturday. Renz — who graduated from SUNY Oswego in 2011 with honors in computer science — was arraigned Friday on murder, rape and kidnapping charges and ordered held without bail. When he showed up at federal court hours later for a probation violation, his face was swollen and tissues were stuffed up his nose. His lawyers said he was assaulted by other inmates. Renz was moved into his own cell Saturday, officials said. Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crime/kiddie-porn-culprit-kills-mother-rapes-daughter-cops-article-1.1290537#ixzz2NztZoSSA
  2. INSTINCTS: There is a reason why your mind and body are reacting to this person in this way. You see signals whether you recognize them or not. These signals are you reading the body language of the person. DO NOT discount what you are feeling! The human being is the only animal on this earth that will not listen to their fears and will ignore what their body is telling them and walk into a dangerous situation, for fear of hurting someone’s feelings. Predators will use this because they know you will want to be polite i.e., (the elevator door opens and there is a man on the elevator or maybe even standing next to you. You are scared and very apprehensive about him, but you get on the elevator anyway, because you don’t offend him). Look For Signs Forced Teaming: A person tries to pretend that he has something in common with a person and they are in the same predicament when it really isn’t true. An effective way to establish premature trust because “we’re in the same boat” (sharing a dilemma) attitude is hard to rebuff without feeling rude. Charm and Niceness: Charm is an overrated ability. Think of charm as a verb not a trait. Why is this person trying to charm me? Niceness does not equal to goodness. Niceness is a decision, a strategy not a character trait. Too Many Details: When people tell the truth they don’t feel the need to add in extra details because there is no reason to doubt them. So when people lie, even if what they are saying sounds credible to you, it doesn’t to them so they keep talking. Type Casting: Is a man’s way of labeling a woman in a (slightly critical) way, hoping she will feel compelled to prove that his opinion is not accurate. “You’re probably too snobbish to talk to the likes of me” “you don’t look like someone who reads the newspaper” (and she sets out to prove him wrong). “There’s such a thing as being too proud” she lets down her defense and accepts his help making her more vulnerable. Since the man is seeking a response the best way to handle is to ignore, acting as if the words weren’t even spoken. Loan Sharking: he wants you to allow him to help you because you will feel you OWE him. It makes it harder for you to tell him to go away.         The Unsolicited Promise: Is one of the most reliable signals because it is nearly always of questionable motive. Promises are used to convince us of an intention, but they are not guarantees. If you are in doubt of what someone is saying and they feel your doubt, they say “I Promise”. Here is your defense: When someone says “I promise” you say, at least in your head, “Your right, I am hesitant about trusting you, and maybe with good reason. Thank you for pointing it out”. Discounting The Word NO: Actions speak louder than words. When you say No and they try to negotiate or the person chooses not to hear, they are trying to control you. Think of a salesman and how annoying they can be, but with a stranger a refusal to hear No can be an important survival signal. As with a suitor, a friend, a boyfriend, even a husband. Refusing to hear “No” is a signal that someone is either seeking control or refusing to relinquish it. Do not negotiate; when you negotiate you give a possibility. At this point your body language can determine whether you are going to become a victim. Turn square to the person, look them in the eye, put your hand out and say NO, or I DON’T WANT YOUR HELP. Do not be timid and shrug off a No. Do not be afraid of being seen as a bitch. If someone ignores what you have told them, WHY, what does he want? According to Gavin DeBecker- “Alarm is always in response to something and Intuition is always right. Your interpretation of your intuition is not always right”. Your intuition is always learning…
