2. BACKGROUND
• Trichomoniasis is the most common sexually
transmitted disease (STD)
• An infection with a tiny parasite spread by sexual
contact (STD).
• Sometimes called as ‘TRICH’

3. ETIOLOGY
• The human genital track is the only reservoir for this
species.
• Trich is transmitted through sexual/genital contact
• Caused by single-celled protozoan parasite called
Trichomonas vaginalis.

8. SIGNS/SYMPTOMS
In woman
• Discomfort during intercourse
• Itching of the inner thighs
• Vaginal discharge (thin, greenish-
yellow, frothy or foamy)
• Itching or swelling of the labia
• Vaginal odor (foul or strong smell)

9. SIGNS/SYMPTOMS
• Burning after urination or ejaculation
• Burning of urethra
• Slight discharge from urethra
In men

10. INVESTIGATIONS
• Small red ulceration (sores) on the vaginal walls.
• Vaginal scrapping for wet mount microscopy or
culture (Diamond’s medium).

13. MANAGEMENT/TREATMENT
• Metronidazole (avoid alcohol intake).
• Infected women who are sexually active have a high rate of reinfection
suggested rescreening every 3 months.
• In married cases, their spouses also should be diagnosed and treated
• Avoid sexual intercourse until treatment is complete.

14. PREVENTION
• Intercourse with only one healthy partner.
• Keep your genital clean and dry.
• Avoid any products that can irritate the vaginal tissues.
• Use condoms to prevent the risk of getting STD
• Avoid all intimate sexual contact with anyone who has
symptoms of an STD.
