Trichomoniasis is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by the protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis. It can infect both men and women through sexual contact, though it more commonly affects women. Symptoms include vaginal discharge and irritation in women and urethritis in men. While often asymptomatic, it can cause complications during pregnancy like preterm delivery. Diagnosis involves microscopic examination of vaginal samples or cultures. Treatment involves antibiotics like metronidazole. Sexual partners should also be treated to prevent reinfection.
