1. Questionnaire Analysis
For our A2 media studies coursework, I had to carry out target audience research for
my promotional package to gather more information about my target audience and
what they would be interested in seeing featured in my practical pieces. This is the
analysis of my questionnaire which I gave to twenty people who are my target
audience.
The results for question one was that there were 13 females and 7 males who took
part in the questionnaire. What I have learnt from these results is that the majority of
those who are interested in or watch horror films are of the female gender. These
results will influence my research and planning and practical work as I will now make
sure that my pieces are suited to a female audience rather than a male audience as
they make up most of my target audience and I want them to be convinced to watch
my film.
For question two I found that of the people who took part in my questionnaire, eight
were aged between 15 and 17, seven were aged between 18 and 20, four were aged
between 21 and 23, and just one was aged between 24 and 26. From these results I
have learned that I need to tailor my practical work to a younger demographic as they
make up most of my target audience. My findings will inform my research and planning
from here on in as I now know to research things they would want to see in my
promotional package so I know to include them in order to attract them specifically.
It was also interesting to learn that none of those in our target audience were aged 27
years or older. This will also help with our research and planning as we can use
platforms such as social media to find out more about our target audience since the
majority of people who use social media are between the ages of 15 and 25.
2. My findings for question three of my questionnaire were that 5 people watch
psychological horrors weekly, 8 watch them monthly and 7 watch them yearly. I asked
this question to find out how popular my chosen horror sub-genre was and how often
my target audience watched it. I have learnt from these results that since most people
watch psychological horrors monthly or weekly I would need to make sure that my
practical work suits the time frames that my audience watch the films so they will
actually make time to see it.
For this question, I asked my target audience their opinions on what they like most
about psychological horrors so there was quite a variety of answers but the most
common responses were that they are intellectually stimulating and make you think,
the tension and suspense, the jump scares and that they genuinely become freaked
out. I have learnt from this many aspects that I need to include in my promotional
package so that my target audience will be persuaded to watch my film. This will
influence my research and planning and practical work as I now know what needs to
be featured in order to draw in my audience.
The results for question five were that out of those who took part in my questionnaire,
five would pay between 0 and 99p, four would pay between £1 and £1.99, nine would
pay between £2 and £2.99 and two would pay between £3 and £3.99 for a film
3. magazine. I have learnt from this that when making my film magazine front cover for
my promotional package I should price it between £2 and £2.99 because that is the
amount that most of my target audience are willing to spend. This will influence my
research and planning and practical work as I will make sure that I don’t make my
magazine more than my target audience are willing to pay for it because that would
probably lead to more people not wanting to purchase the magazine.
The most common answer given for question six were the storyline, jump scares, an
antagonist/villain tease and the music featured in the trailer. From this I have learnt
important features that need to be included in my film trailer in order for my target
audience to be convinced to watch my film. This will influence my research and
planning and practical work as I have an idea as to what to my film trailer should
contain as my target audience themselves have recognised these things that make
them actively want to see a horror movie.
For question seven I found that of the 20 people I asked in my target audience, 9 of
them would prefer the main character to be female because they can relate to the
character and they would find it interesting to see it from a female perspective. 4 of
them said they would prefer a male main character because they are stereotypically
stronger or because the main character in horror movies is usually female and they
would like to see a change. Lastly, 7 said they didn’t mind which because it shouldn’t
matter what gender the main character is. From these results, I have learnt that in my
practical pieces the main protagonist should be female because the overall majority
of my target audience would prefer to see a woman and I need to suit my promotional
package to their needs as I need them to see my film.
For this question since it is based off of all of my target audience’s personal fears I also
gathered a large variety of answers but the most repeated responses were their family
4. dying, loneliness, the paranormal and blood/gore. From this I have learnt that I need
to feature most of these aspects into my promotional package and practical pieces as
I now have knowledge into what scares my audience and for my film to be successful
I need to be able to scare them well.
For question nine I was rewarded with a large variety of examples of successful horror
movies that my target audience enjoy. Out of these the most common answers were
Insidious, The Shining, Annabelle, Orphan and SAW. From these results I have learnt
that I need to incorporate parts from these typeof films into the research and planning
of my own film as that would give it a chance of being successful as it would be based
upon many films my target audience enjoy. This will influence my practical work as I
know what to include in my work in order to attract my target audience to seeing my
film.
For question ten, I found that only 5 people thought posters influenced them themost
in deciding to watch a film and 15 thought the trailer influenced them. Surprisingly,
none of my target audience chose the magazine as the most influential. From these
results I know that I need to put a lot more effort into my film trailer because that is
the part of my promotional package that will mostly influence my target audience into
watching my film.
