Pitch Analysis
We chose to include a detailed description of our film narrative to our target audience because we wanted
them to know specifically what will happen in our film and whether or not it would convince them to
want to watch the film. We also did this so that our audience would understand clearly the sub-genre of
our film and how that will relate to our film narrative. We chose to tell the group the parts of the narrative
that will be included in the trailer but also more information about how the film progresses so they gained
a better understanding of the characters and the situation that they were in.
Narrative
We chose to tell our audience more about our sub-genre of psychological so that they could imagine the
imagery that would be included in our trailer such as hallucinations or flashbacks. Other imagery that we
decided to tell our audience about were the locations that we will set our film trailer in such as a
cemetery, train station and bathroom. These types of imagery will allow the audience to be able to
imagine for themselves the scenes in the trailer and whether or not they will be effective in portraying the
narrative and sub-genre.
Imagery
We chose to tell the group watching our pitch three main inspirational texts that helped us to make
decisions about what to include in our narrative. We used the films ‘Girl Interrupted’ and ‘Black Swan’ as
films that helped us create our film. This is because they are of the same sub-genre of horror as we
decided our film would be so it helped us to understand the conventions that should go into our film to
help our audience understand the sub-genre. We also used a clip from the horror film ‘Case 39’ as one of
our inspirational texts because it is an example of a film with a narrative where the parents abuse/want to
kill their child which was one of our ideas to include in our narrative of our film. These inspirational texts
will also give the audience examples of films that they can refer to in order to help them understand our
film better.
Inspirational Texts
Some technical ideas that we chose to show the group in our pitch referred mostly to our trailer as we
described that we would include a montage at the end of our trailer full of fast cuts of scenes from our
film. This is conventional because horror film trailers commonly show a montage at the end to summarize
the important parts of the narrative that the audience should pay attention to. We also described the type
of straps that we will include in our trailer which will display white writing on a black background to fit
in well with the horror theme and also to give the audience hints to the narrative.
Technical Ideas
The ancillary ideas that we chose to reveal to our audience in our pitch are the fact that for our horror film
poster, we would have an image of our protagonist facing a broken mirror with the reflection being of her
dead boyfriend. This would be effective as it would be a big indication to our target audience about an
important part of the narrative which could persuade them more to want to watch the film. We also told
them about another idea we had for our poster for it to simply show a noose hanging from a tree to hint to
the audience that she may kill herself at the end of the film. Another ancillary idea we released to the
group was that for our magazine front cover to have the main image of our protagonist looking straight
into the camera with direct address standing alone to represent her isolation in her insanity.
Ancillary Ideas
From pitching our ideas to our class about our psychological horror film trailer, we wanted to gain
clarification of our ideas from our target audience so we understood that our ideas portrayed exactly what
we wanted them to about our narrative and characters. Also, we wanted to gain feedback from our peers
and teacher about what they liked about the pitch and what they wanted to know more of in regards to our
film. For example, after we presented the pitch our peers asked us about technical devices we were going
to use in our trailer and we informed them that through editing and downloading MP3 files we were going
to portray our protagonists’ mental instability. Also they asked if we changed anything about our narrative
that we presented in our pitch and we divulged to them that we discarded the idea of using her parents as
the main reason for her psychological deterioration and instead we were going to focus on her alcohol and
drug addiction.
Through our pitch, we also wanted to gain a deeper understanding of what is required of us in our
creation of a promotional package as through researching for our pitch we became more certain about
what it was we wanted to include in our psychological horror film.
Benefits of the Pitch
Our peers encouraged us to think about the ideas we originally had for our horror film and how they have
developed much further into a more serious and professional construction of a film. Also they reminded
me about original ideas I had and how to incorporate them into our trailer to add more suspense and think
about what inspired us in the first place.
After giving our pitch and thinking our decisions through, there are some developments we would like to
make to our narrative to help the audience relate to the characters more so they may feel more inclined to
watch the film. Also we want to develop the technical ideas we have for our trailer so that it appears more
professional than we predict.
