1. Questionnaire Analysis
The aim of this questionnaire is to discover what my target audience like or dislike about films within the horror genre. It also will help me discover what content they want within this trailer and will assist me within making final choices for the general narrative of the film I’m going to make. The sample of people I gave the questionnaire to are people I believe to be my target audience, I have previously decided I want my film to be a 15 rating so it needs to be suitable and appealing to an audience over 15 and decided it will range up to approximately 25. This means my audience will be generally teenagers and young adults. I gave the questionnaire to a sample of people, males and females from my year at school aged 17/18 because I felt this is the average age of people who would want to watch the film. The questions within this questionnaire include a mixture of open and closed questions because I felt it would produce a set of interesting and relevant data. Closed questions create quantitative data; these were in the form of tick boxes so this gave structured answers and also enabled clear comparisons to each answer that was given. The open questions produce qualitative data which include people’s opinions and ideas on the subject matter, this allowed the people taking the questionnaire to put their own attitudes and personal preferences without being forced into pre-calculated answers.
The questionnaire produced data which I will then act on when creating my own trailer and it will help me in deciding what my target audience will want to watch.
31432502760345-10477573660‘How often do you watch films?’ is an example of a closed question, this is because there was no need for the audience to express their own opinions and if they had done so, analysis of the data may have become confusing. By creating set groups people will decided which they fall into and is just as relevant. Looking at the answers to this question I can see that people are watching films quite frequently, everyone questioned either watching them every week or every month. This gives the idea that my target audience will know what makes a good film because they watch them so regularly they must have clear ideas what they like/ dislike. This means that all the answers that are produced will be highly appropriate when helping me decide what should be included or not.
“Do you enjoy watching horror films?” this is another example of a closed question and it shows that most people answered yes. This proves that promoting a film of the horror genre would be a good idea because it would be an enjoyable for my target audience.
-104775619125The first open question on my questionnaire was “What do you enjoy/not enjoy from horror films?” When I came to analyse this data I spilt the two sets of answers because it would become a lot easier to compare. The majority of the answers from the people who enjoyed horror films were aspects such as gore and suspense. Also answers such as suspense showed that people liked those sorts of things to be included in the films they want to watch. With the people who didn’t enjoy this genre of films the answers were more based on personal preference, for example: “hate gore” and “don’t like being scared.” These answers were not really important towards my investigation as these are generic conventions within the horror drama so not including them based on a minority answer wouldn’t be applicable to the variety of film.
2733675439420Asking my audience about iconic horror films enabled me to asses what sort of narratives my target audience found appealing. There were many different varieties of horror films which were brought up within this question; however the prominent ones were “The Exorcist,” “The shining” and “Halloween.” Aspects such as the suspense in these movies are what I believe to make them successful. Also they are films where the narratives appear to be real life situations although they are not, this makes them scary to watch.
Asking my target audience about their views on common cliches on films also helps me determin what I should not include and what aspects could make the film cheesy.
228600-514350
