2. How old are
you?
I decided to ask the age of the
participants so that I could gain more
of an understanding of the audience’s
interests within the horror genre from
the following questions which would
help me and my group tailor our
horror trailer to a more specific
demographic which would increase
the number of viewers.
The majority of people who answered
my survey were 17-19 years old,
meaning our trailer will be aimed at
teens of that calibre.
3. What gender
are you?
I asked the gender of the participants
to understand the needs of my
audience.This will help determine
whether to apply particular theories
into out horror trailer such as Laura
Mulvey’s theory of the male gaze.
I found that there were mainly females
who answered my survey therefore,
my group and I decided against the
male gaze theory.
4. How often do you watch films per week?
I asked how often the participants watch films per week as I
wanted to know how likely my target audience were to watch my
horror trailer. Eleven people answered my survey all together and
1 person selected ‘Never’, 5 people selected ‘1-2 times’ and 3
people selected ‘6-8 times’. 2 people left a comment stating that
one watches films monthly and another watches films a few times
a year.
This helped my group understand the habits of out target
audience and consider the other events that may be happening in
their lives such as college/work.
5. What is your favourite horror film?
I asked the participants what their favourite horror film is.The survey
shows a variety of films with only one answer repeated twice.
Insidious is a supernatural horror which we will consider in our trailer
idea. The answers enabled me and my group to gain more of an
understanding of the type of sub-genres and more specifically horror
films that our audience enjoy.
6. Cinema or
Personal
viewing?
I asked whether the participants would
chose to watch a film at the cinema or at
home so that we could decide whether to
pay to market the trailer in cinemas or just
on television adverts.
The survey showed that 4 people preferred
to go to the cinema, and 7 people favoured
home viewing.With a difference of only 3
people, my group feel it would still be
beneficial to advertise our film through
both methods.
7. Marketing methods
I also asked, ‘if yes, would you please
state whether you would prefer to see
the film advertised through
posters/magazines or on social media
networks?’. Out of the 9 participants
who answered yes, 2 said
posters/magazines and 7 selected
social media sites. My group and I
decided that social media platforms
would be the most beneficial way to
market our product to reach the most
amount of viewers within our target
audience.
I asked whether my audience were influenced by the
marketing of the film to consider whether to market our
film and to what extent. 9 people replied with yes but 2
people said no therefore, we will go with the majority and
market our product thoroughly.
8. Synopsis
I included my group’s synopsis to give the
participants a taste of our trailer idea.
The results came back with 10 people
answering yes but one selected no.Their
reasoning for this was because it sounds
similar to a film they have seen before. My
group intend to find out which film may be
similar to our idea and avoid making it too
alike to create an original idea.
9. Why/why not?
I asked the participants their reasoning as to why they would/would not
watch the film. This would help my group realise any elements that we
need to adjust based on the constructive and critical feedback. The
audience answered with mostly positive answers, predominantly
highlighting the life or death feature. Therefore we will definitely keep this
idea.
10. What about horror films do you like?
I asked what the participants personally like about horror films in general which would help indicate any other
elements and horror conventions that we could add to our idea for the trailer.Three of the 11 answers said that
they would like to see jump scares in a horror film therefore, me and my group will ensure that we add in a jump
scare in order to feed our target audience’s requirements.
