This is my slideshow for my ULearn11 breakout: We have been using e-Portfolios with Year 1 to 6 students at Elm Park School since 2007 and shortly afterwards made the decision to use our e-Portfolios as our sole method of reporting to parents. During this presentation we will discuss our ongoing journey to implement e-Portfolios school-wide, our purpose behind the decision to start the journey, the successes and the challenges - warts and all! We’ll have a look at some e-Portfolios examples and share the professional development, resources, equipment and web 2.0 tools that we have found most useful to help us along the way. We use KnowledgeNET’s Learning Journals at Elm Park School to create our e-Portfolios but this workshop will also be of interest to those using other applications.

This presentation outlines the iterative stages involved in designing, implementing, and evaluating a blended course of English for General Academic Purposes (EGAP) at a university in Japan, delivered in the spring semester of 2017 over a period of fifteen weeks. First, the basic Successive Approximation Model (SAM) will be introduced as the guiding instructional design model upon which the course was created. Afterward, the stages of the blended course design will be explicated with a focus upon assessing Japanese students’ English language needs and their e-learning readiness, determining the course overall goals and module learning objectives, optimizing course technologies and the availability of technical support, designing the course syllabus, materials, tasks, and activities, organizing team teaching, as well as managing formative and summative evaluation. Additionally, the way in which the iteration process has allowed for the discovery of some possibilities and problems at the early phases of the blended course design, and the refinements which were made to benefit from the affordable opportunities and to mitigate the difficulties will be discussed. Finally, the Quality Matters Higher Education Rubric and its effectiveness in raising course quality assurance will be reviewed.

A Transgenic animal is one that carries a foreign gene that has been deliberately inserted into its genome. The foreign gene are inserted into the germ line of the animal, so it can be transmitted to the progeny. Transgenic animals are animals that are genetically altered to have traits that mimic symptoms of specific human pathologies. They provide genetic model of various human disease which are important in understanding disease and development of new target.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
