This magazine advert features Jessie J and challenges typical portrayals of women in media. Rather than focusing on her appearance or being subjected to the male gaze, the advert presents Jessie J as stern and serious. This suggests she wants to stand out as a rebel and not conform to expectations. Her dark makeup and claw-like nails add to the image of her overcoming bullying and hardship to become a successful global superstar, as referenced in one of her songs. The bold gold typography emphasizes her fame and recognition in the music industry.
Jessie challenges female objectification in magazine advert
1. This particular magazine advert goes against
typical pop adverts seen, Jessie is not
subjected to the male gaze, which is
challenging Laura Mulvey's idea that women
are to be sexualised and domineering to men.
To add its not reinforcing her idea of
voyeuristic pleasure in that the male audience
get pleasure by desiring her and has the
feeling he owns her because she's passive, and
he can look at her without feeling guilty
because she doesn't know she's being
watched. This might be done because she
wants to be different from everyone she wants
to be a rebel and to stand out from the rest.
We can tell from her non verbal communication that she is
hard faced and stern she's the sort of person you wouldn't
want to mess around with, or put a foot out of line. The
reason she might be looking so serious may be down to the
fact that her album is going something that is no laughing
matter. Also she may be be giving the audience in an
insight into her past and that the intimating look is just a
front to hide all the pain and suffering she has inside. Jessie
also showing the way she overcame this dark time was
being strong and stopping nothing from getting in her way
that is how she has got so well known and popular. From
her album one song is called 'who's laughing now' where
she talks about her hard times when she was younger with
her being bullied, and she's almost embracing the fact that
she's made something of her life and 'who's laughing now
she is global superstar. This links to Richard dyers stars
theory as she has a strong stand point on her bullying
hardship. Those that are fans of her may feel more
confident to stand up for themselves, as Jessie has given
them hope to focus on their own life ambitions and in years
to come they can give their bullies something to talk about.
Her make- up is dark and harsh she almost looks
like a vampire going back to the point of her
being bullied the people that picked on her
almost sucked the life out of her. However she
has overcome this and become a better more
grounded person due to this. Another
supernatural factor within this magazine advert is
her nails they almost look like wolf claws which is
the signifier in Ferdinand De Saussure theory and
is illustrating animal imagery. The signified is the
fact she is feisty and just as wolfs our hungry for
their prey in Jessie's case she is determined to get
her music and views across. Another assumption
the fact that everything else is dark and her face
is so white could be that under this bad girl
exterior she is an innocent timid women
The typography is bold and striking
suggesting that she is well known artist and
has a lot of recognition. This further
emphasised by the colour gold this colour
connotes wealth and power in Jessie's case
her sense of power wealth is due to the
music industry. There is clear contrast in
colour the rest of the colours used is black
giving us the impression she's going for a
dark and mysterious kind of vibe. However
the gold writing is clear juxtaposition we feel
as the audience that we have sussed her out
however she surprises us with this pop of
colour. We can then indicate that she has a
lot in store us and we should expect big
things from her.
Facial expressions
2. Because of the combination of
the grey/ green colours makes it
seem as though its washed out
and gives it somewhat an
antique effect. This is trying to
convey that Marina is against
the norm the fact that it is not
like the other adverts with
others in the industry makes it
seem she is not trying to
conform to mainstream that she
her own person with her
identity.
Marina is the main cover star in
this advert her makeup is
simplistic and flawless however
her features seem to be darkened
her eyes and eyebrows to be exact
the effect of this is at first glance it
seems very natural like an average
everyday girl however because of
features being darkened makes
her immediately striking also
suggesting she's not just the girl
next door she is much more edgy.
The fact she is looking up at the
audience makes it seem personal
and trying to connect with her
audience.
The bold typography for Marina and
the typography shows that she wants
to be the centre of attention not in a
pompous way but that she wants to
get her name out there to the public
and be easily distinguished .Also
because although their a popular indie
pop band they might want to make
themselves known to a mainstream
audience. The words ‘The Family
Jewels at the top is not as easy to read
but is still in bold which could suggest
that although their very much about
making music their primary aim is self
improvement and recognition and its
so as not to take the attention away
from the main cover star by still
getting the information they need.
3. The fact that they have eagles could be
that they are influenced by 1971 rock
band eagles they are similar in their
style of music so it could be King Of
Leon's main influence and they're trying
to represent this in their magazine
advert. However they don't want to be
clones of them so that's there's only a
bit of the eagle peeking through they
still want their audience to distinguish
its them. By them having their magazine
inspired the Eagles would join the fans
of Kings Of Leon and Eagles together
which in turn would mean they would of
more fans appreciating their music. They
may of used eagles as they are different
from many other birds of prey they want
to be different to everyone else in the
same genre as them they don't want to
be predictable.
The font is very simplistic its white however they
want to have some air of uniqueness by the
albums name in green it may be a way of people
being able to distinguish the band name and the
album. The writing is nothing particularly fancy
this could suggest that their primary aim is not on
the physicality of their magazine advert. They are
more focused on their music, they may not want
their audience to be distracted by extravagant
things they want to get songs and message across
simply. The colour green could connote nature
and new life the fact they have transformed as a
band they aren't like how they were before. The
green could supernatural theme suggesting that
their music is going to be out of this world this
would excite their audience as they will want to
know what they have in store for them.
