How does your media product
represent particular social
groups?
Bekka Wearon
The audience that my product would be aimed at would be middle
class.Through my media production I have represented the class,
as the younger/ older girl are seen as being middle class. This is
because both of the characters are presented well, as well as being
clean and tidy clothes. Also the house that the older girl is moving
into looks quite big which represents she is stable enough to look
after herself. However the house juxtaposed her status as there
are vines all over the house which means it hasn’t been kept tidy
or been looked after in awhile.
In the film “Would you rather” the character Iris is stereotyped as a
typical middle aged women as she is wearing quite dull clothing
such as a black cardigan with a badge top. From this we can see
that she is wearing simple clothing, and middle aged women are
seen as wearing dull and boring clothing.
In our thriller opening we went against the typical stereotypes of women, as
we had our main character as a dominate women because she is working
class and earning her own money. As well as in the opening she has no one
to help her, so by her being alone goes with the theme of thriller because a
stereotypical thriller is own to be isolated. However our main character is
also weak and defenceless as the opening comes to an end the noises start
to overpower her, and she starts to lose her status.
In the tv program Downton Abby the character Violet Crawley is an elderly
women and she is seen a stereotypical higher class elderly women, as she
wears high quality made materials such as silk and diamonds. Also she is
made to look passive because she has other people do things for her, and
isn’t self dependent.
Compared to Carrie Mathison a character in Homeland. This character goes
against the stereotypical view of women having to be weak all the time and
passive. As even though this character works with men, she doesn’t depend
on them to help her and is middle class who works in the CIA which is a
physical job and women aren’t usually seen as the ones to be fighting and
taking charge.
Age is represented throughout the thriller opening through what the actors
are wearing. Our target audience was aimed for was 18-30 year olds as we
thought they would be an easy target because they relate with our thriller.
The little girl is wearing a black top, leggings and a grey cardigan. Which
shows her age as she is wearing quite simple, and elasticated clothes which
allow her to play. However her clothing is non stereotypical for a girl as she’s
wearing dark clothing, and girls are shown to wear pink and bright colours.
The little girl is shown a stereotypical girl as she's laughing and playing on
the swings and play equipment.
Our main character is wearing black trousers and a black jumper, this is the
stereotypical clothing for a women of the age range we are aiming for. The
clothing she wears is stereotypical middle aged women as they wear clothing
that doesn’t show too much flesh, and that are smart and tidy. However the
characters shoes aren't stereotypical for a middle aged women, as she was
wearing trainers. This is to lure the younger viewers and help them to
become interested. Within our thriller opening we use a long shot that
follows the main character across, this is to get a good view of what she is
wearing and allows the audience to see clearly.
