1. My work was inspired by Courtney Love photoshoot in the
‘Elle’ magazine this is because I found her looking like a goddess
of Rock music which is what
I was specifically looking for my magazine that was aimed at
women.
I found this image successful and this is because the model uses direct gaze which creates a positive relationship with
reader but at the same time it gives them a sense of instability which is what Rock genre is about. Moreover, the dress code
use is successfully presented in this image you can see a ripped tights (also used in Courtney’s example) which represent
danger and violence, the heavy boots which is part of Rock dress codes amongst young audience and lastly the neckless
named “choker” I used this specifically to inform readers that although the magazine is aimed at women there is still
dangerous atmosphere which follows the convention of Rock music magazine through time (as presented earlier in the
timeline). The body language of the model is very female like which indicates that the magazine is for women. Although the
is a little body showing the model is not sexually objectified in that way we still get a since of women nature.
2. Although she could be said to be objectified
because her legs are exposed and she is leaning
back in a suggestive way, she subverts sexual
stereotypes because she looks empowered,
confident and confrontational. Her blonde hair and
short t-shirt that shows her legs is something that
one associates with sexually objectified celebrities
however, the torn tights, chain around her neck
and her defiant direct gaze connotes a rock star
who is not a pushover or subordinate to men.
The way she holds the guitar could connoted as
being part of her, she looks confident and the way
she and the guitar compose together suggest its
her natural being which again goes against
stereotypes and what women are like.
3. There is no direct gaze therefore, the relationship
between the readers and audience won’t be as
successful, also the readers might not know from
the first view on t he image who the celebrate is
which would lead to questioning the image.
However, the image presents effectively the genre
conventions of Rock music magazine through use of
electric guitar that is connoting the power and
dominance atmosphere of the magazine.
Furthermore, the body language and the way that
the model holds the guitar is strong and dominant
which is what even female fan of Rock music would
want to feel like.
4. The image is blurry which could be seen as
unsuccessful as this may lead to confusion and
poor quality which would make my magazine
unprofessional. However, the Rock music
magazine is about breaking the rules and this
could be showed through the bad quality of the
magazine.
Overrule, again there is no direct gaze
therefore, the relationship between the readers
and audience won’t be as successful. I
personally do not like this image as it gives a
boring attention, its nothing new and not
something that I would look at for long. Most of
all this image would not convince me into
buying the product.
5. I find this image successful, maybe because of the
hair that is covering the models face but you can
still get to see part of it (her dark make up which
connotes danger and energy but also follows the
convention of Rock music magazine through
time) also, it shows the neckless which is also
very important in presenting the genre of the
magazine.
The hand gesture of the model; the hand above
hold guitar strongly which demonstrates female
hood power whereas, the hand below is much
more softer which stereotypically follows the
convention of women should be like I found this
successful as it symbolises what women are like
and gives two different interpretations of their
character. Just because you listen to Rock doesn't
mean you can’t be soft and delicate and this
image sends this massage excellently.
6. I found this image the most similar to what Courtney
Love looked like in a ‘Elle’ magazine; both of the
models are dressed in black to give the metallic
impression, their legs are crossed to show the
elegance of a female hood and lastly the use of torn
tights connotes the aggressive attitude because of
this features I found this image the most effective.
However, because the ‘Elle’ magazine is a fashion
magazine and I was creating music magazine my
model is holding an electric guitar in empowering
manner to present the genre of the magazine.
The model has the direct gaze with her audience
to create the positive relationship with the
readers but her direct gaze is gloomy which makes
her look mysterious. Also, her hand gesture is very
important with one of her hands she’s
empowering the guitar which makes her look very
dominate but on the other hand, her other hand
makes her seem not as confident as its almost
covering herself which link with the idea of
Feminism.
