Direct Reading Thinking Activity
I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
BECLC
Develop and enhance one’s reading skill in understanding the message brought by the
story.
FOCUS SKILL
Interpret the story by means of characterization, drawing a conclusion, giving the values
of the story and dramatizing the values of the story.
SUPPORT SKILLS
1. Enumerate the given values in the story.
2. Exhibit critical understanding by answering the question for the discussion.
3. Conduct cooperative learning activities.
4. Learn the value of having a determination in doing something.

A. Daily Routine

B. Elicitation of Motivation
Everyone wants to be successful. People will do everything just to achieve something.
 Teacher will ask the following questions:
1. Can you tell class, how do you give your best in doing something?
2. Will you give some values showing how people achieve their goals?
C. Before listening or Pre-Reading
“Daily progress was painfully slow. A snowstorm was raging hard. But the mountain-
climbers proceeded. They wanted to succeed. One of them was flown off his feet. He
had to crawl fast on hands and knees.”

“Their first task was to improve the campsite. Chipping out a platform in the ice-
bound rock perhaps was the hardest work they had to do. The wind whipped at them
violently.”
 If you were the mountain climber, would you continue to finish your goal even if
there are lots of trials?
D. Reading Phase
The teacher will give handouts and read the story in front.
The Hard Climb
Daily progress was painfully slow. A snowstorm was raging hard. But the
mountain-climbers proceeded. They wanted to succeed. One of them was flown off his
feet. He had to crawl fast on hands and knees.
The mountain climbers passed the torn and frozen remains of a tent set earlier.
The guides arrived first at the little sloping area found before the final camp. The two
climbers followed next. Soon they arrived.
Their first task was to improve the campsite. Chipping out a platform in the ice-
bound rock perhaps was the hardest work they had to do. The wind whipped at them
violently.

Questions for Discussion:
1. Who are the main characters in the story? Give their characterization.
2. What is their first task to improve their campsite? Is there any value that was
shown?
3. Do you have an experience having a mountain climbing or camping? How do you
prepare yourself?
4. Do you think the climbers can successfully reach their goal?

  • 1. Direct Reading Thinking Activity I. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to: BECLC Develop and enhance one’s reading skill in understanding the message brought by the story. FOCUS SKILL Interpret the story by means of characterization, drawing a conclusion, giving the values of the story and dramatizing the values of the story. SUPPORT SKILLS 1. Enumerate the given values in the story. 2. Exhibit critical understanding by answering the question for the discussion. 3. Conduct cooperative learning activities. 4. Learn the value of having a determination in doing something. II. Subject Matter: Reference: English for All Times Language Textbook (The Hard Climb) Author: Anonymous Material: Handouts III.Procedure: A. Daily Routine Greetings Prayer Checking of attendance B. Elicitation of Motivation Everyone wants to be successful. People will do everything just to achieve something.  Teacher will ask the following questions: 1. Can you tell class, how do you give your best in doing something? 2. Will you give some values showing how people achieve their goals? C. Before listening or Pre-Reading “Daily progress was painfully slow. A snowstorm was raging hard. But the mountain- climbers proceeded. They wanted to succeed. One of them was flown off his feet. He had to crawl fast on hands and knees.”
  • 2. Direct Reading Thinking Activity “Their first task was to improve the campsite. Chipping out a platform in the ice- bound rock perhaps was the hardest work they had to do. The wind whipped at them violently.”  If you were the mountain climber, would you continue to finish your goal even if there are lots of trials? D. Reading Phase The teacher will give handouts and read the story in front. The Hard Climb Daily progress was painfully slow. A snowstorm was raging hard. But the mountain-climbers proceeded. They wanted to succeed. One of them was flown off his feet. He had to crawl fast on hands and knees. The mountain climbers passed the torn and frozen remains of a tent set earlier. The guides arrived first at the little sloping area found before the final camp. The two climbers followed next. Soon they arrived. Their first task was to improve the campsite. Chipping out a platform in the ice- bound rock perhaps was the hardest work they had to do. The wind whipped at them violently. E. Post Listening Questions for Discussion: 1. Who are the main characters in the story? Give their characterization. 2. What is their first task to improve their campsite? Is there any value that was shown? 3. Do you have an experience having a mountain climbing or camping? How do you prepare yourself? 4. Do you think the climbers can successfully reach their goal? F.
