“Daily progress was painfully slow. A snowstorm was raging hard. But the mountain-
climbers proceeded. They wanted to succeed. One of them was flown off his feet. He
had to crawl fast on hands and knees.”

The Hard Climb
Daily progress was painfully slow. A snowstorm was raging hard. But the
mountain-climbers proceeded. They wanted to succeed. One of them was flown off his
feet. He had to crawl fast on hands and knees.
The mountain climbers passed the torn and frozen remains of a tent set earlier.
The guides arrived first at the little sloping area found before the final camp. The two
climbers followed next. Soon they arrived.
Their first task was to improve the campsite. Chipping out a platform in the ice-
bound rock perhaps was the hardest work they had to do. The wind whipped at them
violently.
