2. CONTINUOUS AND COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION (CCE)
Introduction
The concept of CCE was introduced in the seventies and emphasized by National Policy on
Education(NPE – 1986). It has become mandatory till Elementary stage of education with the
introduction of Right to Education (RTE) Act – 2009.
Continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) refers to a system of school based
evaluation of a student that covers all aspects of a student development. CCE provides
accommodation for individual differences. The CCE also aims at making up the deficiency by
laying adequate emphasis on the development of non scholastic areas. Thus, it helps to develop
all aspects of child’s growth to his/her optional potential.
Continuous evaluation
The term continuous refers to regularity in assessment. The growth and development of a child
is a continuous process and not an event that occurs at random. Hence evaluation should also be
continuous.
The continuous aspects of CCE takes care of continual and periodicity of evaluation.
CE includes regularity of assessment , frequency of unit testing, diagnosis of learning gaps, use
of corrective measures, resting and feedback of evidence to teachers and students for their self
evaluation. The feedback helps teachers in improving the level of achievement and proficiency
among children.
Comprehensive evaluation
Comprehensive covers evaluation of all round development of children not only the cognitive
aspects. It includes assessment in co – curricular activities and personal – social qualities.
Co – curricular areas include specific contents and other activities such a literary, scientific,
cultural, games and sports arts etc.
Evaluation
It is the process of finding out to what extent the changes in the growth and development have
taken place in the child. Thus evaluation process is very broad and involves four major steps:

.Advantages of CCE:
It incorporates both cognitive and non cognitive aspects of the child’s personality.
It provides valuable data about the strength and weakness of the children regularly.
It helps to remove the deficiencies in the teaching learning process.
It provides periodical feedback to both teachers and students.
It provides opportunities for remedial teaching and enriched instruction.
It develop the habit of self- study and confidence in the child
Limitations of CCE:
It is laborious and time consuming.
It can be done only by a true and devoted teacher.
Sometime teachers may fail to maintain objectivity in their role
Some teachers and examiners may threaten the students and make them insecure.
