Our neighbourhood streets (or footpaths) are, more often than not, where most urban children begin their cycling journey.
While there is a lot of discussion these days about separating cyclists from traffic, this is often not possible in a local street environment.
This presentation will consider some of the tools available to encourage more riding in a mixed traffic environment.
Contra-flow provide an excellent opportunity to create direct cycle routes and increase permeability through one-way streets.
Important to use clear signage and line marking and delineation at the start and end points
A new wave of ideas (for Australia anyway) around the treatment local roads is being considered in a number of states at the moment.
They include variations of European concepts such as bicycle boulevards and cycle streets.
This example is one option being considered by TMR in Queensland:
No centreline
Cars give way to bikes
Single, two-way vehicle lane

Self-explaining roads are based around the concept of shaping the visual characteristics of the road in order to influence driver behaviour.
Offer an alternative to LATM
This is typically done to suit the functional hierarchy of the road.
For local roads, features include:
- additional landscaping that reduces the forward visibility of road users
pedestrian refuge islands or kerb outstands
removal of existing line marking in order to create a visually distinct environment.
Can also include the creation of discontinuous roads that discourage through routes and higher speeds by vehicles, but permit full permeability by bicycles
For collector level road the opposite applies:
increased delineation, including cycle lanes, medians and improved pedestrian amenity.

Predictability of the road environment contributes to improved adherence to the designed target speed limit.
The SER approach has been demonstrated to significantly reduce vehicle speeds and improve homogeneity of speeds on local roads.
The example on the screen shows the mean speeds for local treated roads reduced from 44km/h to 30km/h (reduction of 33%).

Well-defined road categories are acknowledged to promote improved homogeneity on their use which contributes to reduced differences in vehicle speeds.
