I produced this timetable to help me keep up to date with my work. I find working with
timetable schedules very useful as I can clearly see what I need for what day; it also gives me
time to collect the right equipment for it. As much as I wanted this timetable to work it did alter
slightly as the days I planned to record my own Sound effects it rained which interrupted with
the sound I need to capture. This made things quite difficult as this meant I then had to re-
evaluate what I would do instead as I was short on time to record. Due to weather conditions I
had to wait three days before I could go and record outside again.
Storage and retrieval
I made sure my project was backed up so I had it saved on to my own personal memory stick,
and then also backed up on the Music Henley college drive. This came in handy as at some point
during my production the software Cubase updated itself which meant a lot of tracks were
messed up. I had to fix them quickly which I did because I had it all stored and backed up
somewhere else. This also meant my client could so how well the development of this project
2. was going. I was able to receive constructive criticism which I then made sure I corrected all my
faults and work towards the next part in my production.
Milestones
During the length of this project I was allowed to receive regular feedback from my client, which
helped me gain an insight of what I should work towards and what I was doing wrong. Along
with the feedback I had to work to my deadlines. Although this didn’t turn out as planned I still
managed to get the work done even if it was a few days / weeks later. The idea of a deadline is
to make sure that work is done in good time so that once you have finished you can look back
and re do any work that wasn’t done properly the first time. This is called post production.
Recording sound
The Henley College provided six studios for me to practice my recordings. At first I used a zoom
and learnt the basics of how to use it and when is an appropriate time to use it for example, I
had to make sure that my surrounding were in good condition. That meant I had to have sound
proof walls so no extra sounds could be caught by the microphone that would disturb my
recording. After a few experiments with the zoom I began to get familiar with what was
expected as professional standards and realised that when I edited it on Cubase it would be
easier to edit if the recordings were already at a high standard. From previous other units I
knew that when importing and video onto any editing software I had to know what the file size
of each clip was. This is something I recognized straight away and changed when imported into
Cubase through settings. When my audio recordings were uploaded I then changed the volume
and audio levelling on Cubase to make sure that it was clear and easily heard for any audience
member.
Sound manipulation
When I first chose my video for my advert I had to download it as an MP4 through YouTube
converter online, which I then had to change to QuickTime through encoder / Cubase settings.
This helped me edit my soundtrack as I was able to watch and record everything at the same
time. This made an enormous impact on my performance as everything eventually was in time
with the music and it worked well. I changed the volume levels on the mixer 1 and 2 by creating
a pan effect. This wasn’t essential but through headphones sounded great. I also put in fades at
the beginning and end of my advertisement to let the audience know when it was beginning and
when the advert was ending. Once I had made my bass and drum track I made sure it was on
loop so it was easier and made it quicker to import other tracks. If this did not happen I would
have been wasting a lot of time. I added a bit of reverb into my tracks to make the soundtrack
altogether sound more high tech and acceptable as this is something my competitors have done
before.
Industry practice
When I look back and compare my soundtrack to the original I can see various changes in
comparison to editing style. Although this is a college based assignment I knew my end outcome
would not be as professional as the original. My aims for this project were to make sure
everything was done as it was set out to be. I wanted my music to be upbeat, which it was and so
on. I think I did my brief justice as I had completed everything that was asked upon. I feel my
3. ending product was successful although there were some slight interruptions through the
length of this project.
Technical qualities
During the time of this assignment my production skills really began to shine through when my
deadlines occurred. I was motivated to do well and complete everything on time. At times I
found it hard to get up and put myself out there when it came to recording because there were
always difficulties with the software which I feel I soon bothered me and I became stubborn and
was not willing to try over and over again. I soon realized that this was part of the whole
process and qite frequently it happened a lot especially when using Cubase.
