Production Reflection
Toni Gibson
Week 1
Process 10th-13th April
• This week I did my initial plans for my FMP, to do this I created a mind map on
bubbl.us. I did this so that I could write specific details about my ideas. I discussed
three ideas that I had came up with. I came up with an idea for each rotation I have
done this year, so that which ever idea I chose to do I already knew how to use the
products/tools I will need to create it. In the end I chose the print idea because I
want to focus mostly on the photography perspective of it and I chose to base my
magazine around
fashion because
modelling, celebrities
and fashion are very
popular when it
comes to
photography.
Process 10th-13th April
• I also created a mind map for my final chosen idea. This mind map will when it
comes to actually creating my product because I have been very specific with what
colours and location I want to use within the magazine. I have also listed what I
would like to include as content in my magazine. I don’t want to create a too big of
magazine because I would like to have around 10 individual pages of content that
looks good rather than the 30-40 pages an actual magazine has.
.
Process 10th-13th April
• Once I had my final idea I created mood boards. Because the
theme for my FMP is seasons I created an individual mood
boards for each theme, I included things such as outfits, shoes
and hairstyles. I did this so that I had ideas of what other
fashion photography looked like. Once I created the mood
boards I analysed them with what type of photos I collected and
how they will influence my final product.
• This week I also looked into some existing products. I looked at
website, magazine and look book video, which are all things I
plan on doing. I took screen shots of the website, magazine and
look book video to analysis what they show. For the look book
video I broke down three different outfits and the location
where it was filmed the background is important so there is no
clashes with colours.
Process 10th-13th April
• I broke down the front page of LOOK’s website by analysing what it shows and the
colour scheme it portrays. For the magazine, I wrote about what it shows and how
having that on a magazine cover would draw in an audience. I wrote about how he
magazine includes a positive message ‘you’ve got this’ which is important for its
young readers. The magazine promises ‘pro tips’ which will bring in readers.
I looked at this type of magazine
because it similar to what I want
to create. I also liked the colors
they used within the cover and
how they designed the text to
look. I found that on most
fashion magazine covers the
colors match to what the
model/s are wearing.
As well as looking at front
covers I also looked at a website
to see which would be better fit
to the product I’m making.
Process 10th-13th April
I looked at same brands website as the magazine cover. The website I looked at
wasn't very easy to navigate. I found that some of the things that the website
had advertised to be there wasn't. with this information, I decided that a
website would not be best fit. Even though the website didn’t work very well, it
did look appealing. The
style of the website
matched the style of the
magazine which is good
for the brand because if
that style of font is quite
popular it will
automatically make
people think of this
specific brand.
Process 10th-13th April
I also looked a YouTube video of a look book. I did this because I think it will help when
it comes to taking the photographs for my product. I will know what type of thing to
say about the products and how the people in the photos should pose for
each season. Looking
at this also taught me
what colors clash and
which don’t. this is an
important thing
because if the colors
clash, the magazine
wouldn't’t be very
appealing to look at.
Week 2
Process 16th-20th April
• This week I created a survey to find out information from my age group target
audience. From my survey I found out that 70% of the answers were from men.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but stereotypically females are known to know
more about fashion. I also would not have as many answers from my specific target
audience (adolescent females). For my survey I created 8 question surrounding
fashion. A lot of the questions were answered quite equally. For my product this
isn’t very good because with the answers I got I wanted one specific thing that was
popular that I could base my magazine on. Due to the options I gave the target
audience to choose from I
will have to include all of
them if I was to keep all of
my target audience happy. I
think the answers I got
don’t really help with my
chosen target audience, this
could effect creating my
product.
Process 16th-20th April
• I also conducted individual surveys so I could get specific detail from one person
only. The individual surveys were complete opposites with the answers I got. This is
a good thing for my product because I know from these answers what to include
for someone to continue reading the magazine and what to include if someone was
to start reading the magazine. Both people who answered my individual surveys
were male, this has made me want to include some gender natural parts to the
magazine so that both sexes can enjoy the magazine. I feel like because most of the
feedback I've got from my surveys were from men I think that I will find my
magazine wont include a lot of things that wont cater to that specific audience.
Because the feedback I got
from the surveys for women
was small. I feel like I will
struggle with what my target
audience. To help with this I
will do plenty of research on
my target audience.
Process 16th-20th April
• In my magazine I wanted to include some posters, so this week I also did some
experiments on photoshop so I could have a rough idea of how they could turn out.
I also did some experimental photography. I tried different settings with the camera
to see what types of photos I could get. I looked at different photoshop tutorials to
give me poster ideas for my final product.
• One of the main experiments I did included using a colour replacement tool. Edited
this head shot that I got off of the internet. I didn’t want to change the skin colour
of the model so I used the quick selection tool to make sure where I was using the
color replacement tool it wasn’t merging over into parts that I didn’t want to
change. I think that I will most likely use this tool when it comes to actually creating
My magazine because since its based
around fashion and seasons, I can
change colours of hair, clothing and
surroundings to fit in with the specific
season the photo is being used for.
Week 3
Process 23rd-27th April
• This week I focused on creating experiments of my final product. I used Photoshop
to edit the photos I took and the ones I got off of the internet. I followed tutorials
on YouTube so that I could easier understand the tools that Photoshop has and how
to use them. I did this with three experiments.
• With the three different experiments I tried to find opposite tutorials to ones that I
have already tried, meaning I was trying things that I wasn't used to doing. Since
the experiments were all so different this allowed me to explore Photoshop a lot
more than I already have done, where I learnt a lot more about Photoshop.
Because I learnt a lot more about Photoshop I decided to try creating my own
experiments without any tutorials. These experiments came out quite well.
Because I know more about the tools that Photoshop offers I plan on using the
ideas and tools for a similar part for my final project.
When I tried this lettering Photoshop experiment, I thought that it
would fit in really well with my product because it very fashionable
and would be quite good for a title of an article or I could use this
when listing the name of a celebrity, where also I would include
their photo as well so that the reader can put a face to the name. I
found when creating this it was quite easy because it didn’t take
Process 23rd-27th April
that many tools to create it I needed the text tool and the
rubber tool. To make the rubbing out easy and neat I used
the quick selection tool so that the image would have straight
lines giving off a more professional look .
This week I also finished analyzing the
responses I got from my questionnaire. This
helped me to understand the target audience
that I have chosen to base my product on a lot
more. I was able to realize what would and
wouldn’t fit in with the magazine. This
information will help when it comes to creating
my final product.
From my analysis, I learnt that some of the
things that I thought would fit in with my
magazine and would work with my target
audience. Due to finding this out before I
started production, I was able to change my
idea to something that fit better with my
chosen target audience.

Week 4
Process 1st-4th May
• This week I did pre-production, so I looked at gathering font styles that I would like
to use in my final product, I got plenty of samples because some of the font styles I
was thinking about editing together to create my own unique font, I think this
would be easier than looking through the internet until I find a single font similar to
what I want.
• I also gathered samples of colour pallets that I would like to use I chose to look at
colours that went together and colours that didn’t because I wanted to see if these
colours would work with my idea of my product. I also looked into what type of
photos I would like to use. I did this for each season so that I knew which clothing
styles would fit where.
• I also looked into what colours would work better for each individual season. Doing
this will help when it comes to taking photographs for my final product. I will help
with choosing the colour of clothing and place where the photos will be taken, this
is important for the photos because the background shouldn’t be dark and boring
but it also shouldn’t be to bright that it draws the attention away from the main
focus of the photo.
• This week I also created a style sheet for each individual page. I also did a mock up
version from pictures off of the internet. This will help me when it comes to
creating my final product because I already have a brief idea of how its going to
turn out.
• I also looked into what resources are needed to complete my product and what
locations are needed. I planned out what I was to do if there was an issue and how
I would overcome it. I talked about the importance of health and safety and what
to do if an issue occurs.
Week 5
Process 8th–11th May
• This week I got the legal documents I needed signed so that I have
legal permission to photograph the people for my magazine.
• This week I got half of my photography done that I need for my
magazine. Each of the photos I got are individually different this is so
that when it comes to evaluating my work, this will give me
something extra to talk about.
• Also this week I began my production. I started by creating my front
page on Photoshop. I looked at existing fashion magazine covers to
see what worked and what didn’t. I found that most covers only have
one solid colour. I had to decide on a colour scheme that would fit
with the photos I had taken and what would make the magazine look
good. I decided to go with pastel blue as the cover, because it
complimented the clothing in the image I used. With the image I
used, I had edit the photo to be a little bit darker so that it stood out
over the background. I also cut the image out of its original
background so that the page wasn’t overflowed with content and
that the page didn’t look to blocky.
Week 6
Process 15th–18th May
This week I continued with my production I focused
mostly on my front cover and contents page. To
create these I used Photoshop. When I began to
create my contents page I hadn’t looked at any
existing ones beforehand what I came up with I
wasn’t very happy with so I looked into what already
exists to give me an idea of what a good contents
page looks like.
I looked at this contents page which I liked to give me inspiration to create a better
looking contents page. I liked how the page was easy to read and that included
pictures of part of the magazine to show a snippet of what's to offer.
With the contents
page that I found on
the internet I was
able to take parts
from that, change
them and make
them my own. I
didn't want to copy
Process 15th–18th MayThe other contents page exactly because I wanted it to be my ideas. To do this I
modified what already existed into something different that I had created. I like how
there are images at the top of the page with a number showing what page they
reference to. I wanted to include this in my own contents page because I think it’s a
good idea due to the fact it shows the reader what to expect on that specific page. I
liked that they included different sub headings to break up what's featured within the
magazine. I did this with my contents page to make reading the magazine a lot easier
Week 7
Process 22th–25th May
This week I continued with my production and started creating my
front cover. Before I did start my front cover I looked into more
detail of well known magazines to see what type of design fits well
for a fashion magazine. I found a cover by look magazine that I liked
and decided to aim to design my front cover around that one. I
originally wanted to have the main title of the magazine to be in a
cursive font because I think that style of font would compliment this
type of magazine. From trying out different cursive font styles, I
found that the majority of them were hard to read. To fix this issue I
decided to change the font design to a bolder text to fill the page
and is much easier to read. I went with a similar font to the one on
look magazine because it frames the content on the cover quite
well. When deciding what colour scheme to go with, I knew I
wanted it to be pink and blue but was stuck between dark or light
colours. From trying both out I found that the lighter colour scheme
fits my type of magazine a lot better. I also had to decide what
content I wanted to advertise on cover, and because it would be
going out to a vast target audience I needed it to be something that
cater to all ages. I decided to go with advertisement for what
“celebrities” are included with in the magazine and that there is a
possible competition to be won.
Week 8
Process 28th May- 1st June• This week I put the finishing touches to
a lot of my production. I did the
finishing edit to my front cover. I did
this by changing the colouring of the
photo to look a lot more professional
and to stand out from the background.
I also looked into my contents page in
more detail. I re-made my contents
page because I wasn’t happy with the
final out come of it because I think it
came out looking quite blocky. I made
the title smaller and the images bigger
because I didn’t like the outcome of
the title I think it took up too much
space on the page. I wanted to make
the images stand out to show the
effects that I had used and what would
be on offer from with in the magazine.
Week 9
Process 4th-8th June
• This week I began my evaluation. I talked about all the different
products I made and how I made them. When evaluating my
research I went back and looked a lot more magazine covers to see
if the one I made was similar to some that already exist. Looking
back at how my time was managed I think it was going well until I
had to gather my images for production. If I could re-do this
production I would choose to take my photos with other people
because I think that the people that I did end up photographing
didn’t really care so didn’t try to do their best. When describing the
technical qualities of my work it made me realise that I hadn’t used
a lot of effects when it came to editing my phots, I fixed this and
went back to my production editing them with more effects, to
show as much detail as possible.
Week 10
Process 11th-15th June
• This week I began the improvements of my other
practical work. I mostly focused on my front cover
because that is my main piece of production. When
originally creating my cover I had the image edited
lighter to fit in with the colour scheme. I made the
image darker to stand out and by doing that I think that
the magazine look a lot more professional.
• I re-did my some of my survey questions because the
answers that I got I didn’t think they fit in with my
chosen age category. I looked into more detail of what
people aged 18 and over are interested in. from my
research I found that the majority of people over the
age group I initially researched answered the complete
opposite to what the original group answered.

6. production reflection

  • 3. Process 10th-13th April • This week I did my initial plans for my FMP, to do this I created a mind map on bubbl.us. I did this so that I could write specific details about my ideas. I discussed three ideas that I had came up with. I came up with an idea for each rotation I have done this year, so that which ever idea I chose to do I already knew how to use the products/tools I will need to create it. In the end I chose the print idea because I want to focus mostly on the photography perspective of it and I chose to base my magazine around fashion because modelling, celebrities and fashion are very popular when it comes to photography.
  • 4. Process 10th-13th April • I also created a mind map for my final chosen idea. This mind map will when it comes to actually creating my product because I have been very specific with what colours and location I want to use within the magazine. I have also listed what I would like to include as content in my magazine. I don’t want to create a too big of magazine because I would like to have around 10 individual pages of content that looks good rather than the 30-40 pages an actual magazine has. .
  • 5. Process 10th-13th April • Once I had my final idea I created mood boards. Because the theme for my FMP is seasons I created an individual mood boards for each theme, I included things such as outfits, shoes and hairstyles. I did this so that I had ideas of what other fashion photography looked like. Once I created the mood boards I analysed them with what type of photos I collected and how they will influence my final product. • This week I also looked into some existing products. I looked at website, magazine and look book video, which are all things I plan on doing. I took screen shots of the website, magazine and look book video to analysis what they show. For the look book video I broke down three different outfits and the location where it was filmed the background is important so there is no clashes with colours.
  • 6. Process 10th-13th April • I broke down the front page of LOOK’s website by analysing what it shows and the colour scheme it portrays. For the magazine, I wrote about what it shows and how having that on a magazine cover would draw in an audience. I wrote about how he magazine includes a positive message ‘you’ve got this’ which is important for its young readers. The magazine promises ‘pro tips’ which will bring in readers. I looked at this type of magazine because it similar to what I want to create. I also liked the colors they used within the cover and how they designed the text to look. I found that on most fashion magazine covers the colors match to what the model/s are wearing. As well as looking at front covers I also looked at a website to see which would be better fit to the product I’m making.
  • 7. Process 10th-13th April I looked at same brands website as the magazine cover. The website I looked at wasn't very easy to navigate. I found that some of the things that the website had advertised to be there wasn't. with this information, I decided that a website would not be best fit. Even though the website didn’t work very well, it did look appealing. The style of the website matched the style of the magazine which is good for the brand because if that style of font is quite popular it will automatically make people think of this specific brand.
  • 8. Process 10th-13th April I also looked a YouTube video of a look book. I did this because I think it will help when it comes to taking the photographs for my product. I will know what type of thing to say about the products and how the people in the photos should pose for each season. Looking at this also taught me what colors clash and which don’t. this is an important thing because if the colors clash, the magazine wouldn't’t be very appealing to look at.
  • 10. Process 16th-20th April • This week I created a survey to find out information from my age group target audience. From my survey I found out that 70% of the answers were from men. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but stereotypically females are known to know more about fashion. I also would not have as many answers from my specific target audience (adolescent females). For my survey I created 8 question surrounding fashion. A lot of the questions were answered quite equally. For my product this isn’t very good because with the answers I got I wanted one specific thing that was popular that I could base my magazine on. Due to the options I gave the target audience to choose from I will have to include all of them if I was to keep all of my target audience happy. I think the answers I got don’t really help with my chosen target audience, this could effect creating my product.
  • 11. Process 16th-20th April • I also conducted individual surveys so I could get specific detail from one person only. The individual surveys were complete opposites with the answers I got. This is a good thing for my product because I know from these answers what to include for someone to continue reading the magazine and what to include if someone was to start reading the magazine. Both people who answered my individual surveys were male, this has made me want to include some gender natural parts to the magazine so that both sexes can enjoy the magazine. I feel like because most of the feedback I've got from my surveys were from men I think that I will find my magazine wont include a lot of things that wont cater to that specific audience. Because the feedback I got from the surveys for women was small. I feel like I will struggle with what my target audience. To help with this I will do plenty of research on my target audience.
  • 12. Process 16th-20th April • In my magazine I wanted to include some posters, so this week I also did some experiments on photoshop so I could have a rough idea of how they could turn out. I also did some experimental photography. I tried different settings with the camera to see what types of photos I could get. I looked at different photoshop tutorials to give me poster ideas for my final product. • One of the main experiments I did included using a colour replacement tool. Edited this head shot that I got off of the internet. I didn’t want to change the skin colour of the model so I used the quick selection tool to make sure where I was using the color replacement tool it wasn’t merging over into parts that I didn’t want to change. I think that I will most likely use this tool when it comes to actually creating My magazine because since its based around fashion and seasons, I can change colours of hair, clothing and surroundings to fit in with the specific season the photo is being used for.
  • 14. Process 23rd-27th April • This week I focused on creating experiments of my final product. I used Photoshop to edit the photos I took and the ones I got off of the internet. I followed tutorials on YouTube so that I could easier understand the tools that Photoshop has and how to use them. I did this with three experiments. • With the three different experiments I tried to find opposite tutorials to ones that I have already tried, meaning I was trying things that I wasn't used to doing. Since the experiments were all so different this allowed me to explore Photoshop a lot more than I already have done, where I learnt a lot more about Photoshop. Because I learnt a lot more about Photoshop I decided to try creating my own experiments without any tutorials. These experiments came out quite well. Because I know more about the tools that Photoshop offers I plan on using the ideas and tools for a similar part for my final project. When I tried this lettering Photoshop experiment, I thought that it would fit in really well with my product because it very fashionable and would be quite good for a title of an article or I could use this when listing the name of a celebrity, where also I would include their photo as well so that the reader can put a face to the name. I found when creating this it was quite easy because it didn’t take
  • 15. Process 23rd-27th April that many tools to create it I needed the text tool and the rubber tool. To make the rubbing out easy and neat I used the quick selection tool so that the image would have straight lines giving off a more professional look . This week I also finished analyzing the responses I got from my questionnaire. This helped me to understand the target audience that I have chosen to base my product on a lot more. I was able to realize what would and wouldn’t fit in with the magazine. This information will help when it comes to creating my final product. From my analysis, I learnt that some of the things that I thought would fit in with my magazine and would work with my target audience. Due to finding this out before I started production, I was able to change my idea to something that fit better with my chosen target audience.
  • 16. Process 23rd-27th April • This week I also finished analysing the responses I got from my questionnaire. This helped me to understand the target audience that I have chosen to base my product on a lot more. I was able to realise what would and wouldn’t fit in with the magazine. Due to finding this out before I started production, I was able to change my idea to something that fit better with my chosen target audience.
  • 18. Process 1st-4th May • This week I did pre-production, so I looked at gathering font styles that I would like to use in my final product, I got plenty of samples because some of the font styles I was thinking about editing together to create my own unique font, I think this would be easier than looking through the internet until I find a single font similar to what I want. • I also gathered samples of colour pallets that I would like to use I chose to look at colours that went together and colours that didn’t because I wanted to see if these colours would work with my idea of my product. I also looked into what type of photos I would like to use. I did this for each season so that I knew which clothing styles would fit where. • I also looked into what colours would work better for each individual season. Doing this will help when it comes to taking photographs for my final product. I will help with choosing the colour of clothing and place where the photos will be taken, this is important for the photos because the background shouldn’t be dark and boring but it also shouldn’t be to bright that it draws the attention away from the main focus of the photo. • This week I also created a style sheet for each individual page. I also did a mock up version from pictures off of the internet. This will help me when it comes to creating my final product because I already have a brief idea of how its going to turn out. • I also looked into what resources are needed to complete my product and what locations are needed. I planned out what I was to do if there was an issue and how I would overcome it. I talked about the importance of health and safety and what to do if an issue occurs.
  • 20. Process 8th–11th May • This week I got the legal documents I needed signed so that I have legal permission to photograph the people for my magazine. • This week I got half of my photography done that I need for my magazine. Each of the photos I got are individually different this is so that when it comes to evaluating my work, this will give me something extra to talk about. • Also this week I began my production. I started by creating my front page on Photoshop. I looked at existing fashion magazine covers to see what worked and what didn’t. I found that most covers only have one solid colour. I had to decide on a colour scheme that would fit with the photos I had taken and what would make the magazine look good. I decided to go with pastel blue as the cover, because it complimented the clothing in the image I used. With the image I used, I had edit the photo to be a little bit darker so that it stood out over the background. I also cut the image out of its original background so that the page wasn’t overflowed with content and that the page didn’t look to blocky.
  • 22. Process 15th–18th May This week I continued with my production I focused mostly on my front cover and contents page. To create these I used Photoshop. When I began to create my contents page I hadn’t looked at any existing ones beforehand what I came up with I wasn’t very happy with so I looked into what already exists to give me an idea of what a good contents page looks like. I looked at this contents page which I liked to give me inspiration to create a better looking contents page. I liked how the page was easy to read and that included pictures of part of the magazine to show a snippet of what's to offer. With the contents page that I found on the internet I was able to take parts from that, change them and make them my own. I didn't want to copy
  • 23. Process 15th–18th MayThe other contents page exactly because I wanted it to be my ideas. To do this I modified what already existed into something different that I had created. I like how there are images at the top of the page with a number showing what page they reference to. I wanted to include this in my own contents page because I think it’s a good idea due to the fact it shows the reader what to expect on that specific page. I liked that they included different sub headings to break up what's featured within the magazine. I did this with my contents page to make reading the magazine a lot easier
  • 25. Process 22th–25th May This week I continued with my production and started creating my front cover. Before I did start my front cover I looked into more detail of well known magazines to see what type of design fits well for a fashion magazine. I found a cover by look magazine that I liked and decided to aim to design my front cover around that one. I originally wanted to have the main title of the magazine to be in a cursive font because I think that style of font would compliment this type of magazine. From trying out different cursive font styles, I found that the majority of them were hard to read. To fix this issue I decided to change the font design to a bolder text to fill the page and is much easier to read. I went with a similar font to the one on look magazine because it frames the content on the cover quite well. When deciding what colour scheme to go with, I knew I wanted it to be pink and blue but was stuck between dark or light colours. From trying both out I found that the lighter colour scheme fits my type of magazine a lot better. I also had to decide what content I wanted to advertise on cover, and because it would be going out to a vast target audience I needed it to be something that cater to all ages. I decided to go with advertisement for what “celebrities” are included with in the magazine and that there is a possible competition to be won.
  • 27. Process 28th May- 1st June• This week I put the finishing touches to a lot of my production. I did the finishing edit to my front cover. I did this by changing the colouring of the photo to look a lot more professional and to stand out from the background. I also looked into my contents page in more detail. I re-made my contents page because I wasn’t happy with the final out come of it because I think it came out looking quite blocky. I made the title smaller and the images bigger because I didn’t like the outcome of the title I think it took up too much space on the page. I wanted to make the images stand out to show the effects that I had used and what would be on offer from with in the magazine.
  • 29. Process 4th-8th June • This week I began my evaluation. I talked about all the different products I made and how I made them. When evaluating my research I went back and looked a lot more magazine covers to see if the one I made was similar to some that already exist. Looking back at how my time was managed I think it was going well until I had to gather my images for production. If I could re-do this production I would choose to take my photos with other people because I think that the people that I did end up photographing didn’t really care so didn’t try to do their best. When describing the technical qualities of my work it made me realise that I hadn’t used a lot of effects when it came to editing my phots, I fixed this and went back to my production editing them with more effects, to show as much detail as possible.
  • 31. Process 11th-15th June • This week I began the improvements of my other practical work. I mostly focused on my front cover because that is my main piece of production. When originally creating my cover I had the image edited lighter to fit in with the colour scheme. I made the image darker to stand out and by doing that I think that the magazine look a lot more professional. • I re-did my some of my survey questions because the answers that I got I didn’t think they fit in with my chosen age category. I looked into more detail of what people aged 18 and over are interested in. from my research I found that the majority of people over the age group I initially researched answered the complete opposite to what the original group answered.
