ASSURE Method
A – Analyze Learners
The students in this class are first grade special education students. There are 17 students:
10 boys and 7 girls with 70% white, 20% African-American, and 10% Latino. There are
7 students in the class who have mild to severe ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder).
S - State Objectives
After this lesson, students should
 Be able to recite all 12 months of the year in order.
 Sing a song with all 12 months
 Know the 12 months of the year with 100% accuracy in a 2 week period
S – Select Methods, Media, and Materials
 Handout with the song
 YouTube Video playing on the smartboard
U – Utilize Media and Materials
 I will have the lyrics to the song printed out
 “12 months! And then you start back over,
12 months! Shout it in a cheer,
12 months! And then you start back over,
12 months! Are in a year
January February March April May June July August September October November
December
Those are the months,
12 months in a year!”
Repeat
 I will have tested the YouTube video on the smartboard to make sure it is working
properly https://youtu.be/RBD5s-wuXyI
R – Require Learner Participation
After the introduction of the 12 months of the year, the students will sing along with the
YouTube video several times each morning as a class. This will help them wake up and
get prepared for the day. Any student not singing along, will get a mark by their name
(once they have 5 marks for a day, I write a note in their agenda to their parents). If the
students do know all the months and the corresponding numbers, they will get a star by
their name on the chart (once the child has 5 stars, they are allowed to pick from the prize
box). I would also encourage the students to teach the song to their families and have
them practice with the child.
E – Evaluate and Revise
Evaluate each student throughout the 2 weeks, and see if they know the months of the
year and the corresponding number. If not, break it down in a simpler way (possibly by
only going over a few months per day instead of them all at once in song). I will ask the
students if they like the song and activity. If they do not like the song or activity, I will
search for new ones.
