My Act Of Courage
My act of courage in life is noting extraordinary, but it was a big deal for me and to this day I'm
grateful that I was able to overcome it, because now I love riding roller coasters. Anyway the fear at
the time (last year) was riding roller coasters because I was scared I might fall out of my seat and
die, and as I got older it was becoming more of a problem. Plus, as a "teenager" it's hard to find
something fun besides roller coasters and expensive rigged carnival games at theme parks like Six
Flags. But once summer had started I knew something was going to have to change and I had to get
over this silly little fear. This was because at the time Six Flags was the place to be, plus my mom
had gotten me and my sister season passes that we could use quite often.
The time came on one faithful day during the summer when my sister convinces me to go ride my
first roller coaster The Batman. It of course was a terrifying and exciting experience, and right when
we got to in line my heart began to race, and the only thing that was keeping me in line was my
sister reassuring me that it was fun and that I wouldn't die. So as the line would move even a little
bit I would have mini heart attacks and have to calm myself. This would go on for a while until we
got to the dark staircase with only a red and white flashing lights to guide us. This made it a little
worse because I'm so clumsy and now that I couldn't see very well a new fear had appeared and now
I was worrying about tripping

Analysis Of A Peculiar Sort Of Fun By Stephen King
A Peculiar Sort of Fun When I was younger I remember being told the most terrifying story and it
repeating in my head over and over again, why would people purporposly watch things to feel this
type of fear? Stephen King constantly reminds readers why people crave horror so badly, which is to
challenge their fears, feel more normal compared to others, and to of course experience fun and
excitement fear creates the Human Condition to crave horror. We crave horror to show that we can;
to experience an adrenaline rush. Stephen King compares roller coasters to movies because on both
it keeps us guessing the next move and makes us scream in different parts. King suggests that we go
for the dare of it, to see how far it can push us, and that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the story "Strawberry Spring" we make a connection towards a guy who is a psychopath serial
killer. His sort of fun is being with woman and then killing them for no particular sort of reason. It is
true that all humans have a dark side. Stephen King states in the short story "Why We Crave Horror
Movies" that "the fun comes from seeing others menaced sometimes killed". What this means is we
have fun when we see someone get killed in movies because we know that's not us and it won't
happen in our life

Hot Diggity Dog Training Report
I would like to take a moment and thank you properly for all of your assistance and effort in helping
me learn how to train dogs. When I first started your Hot Diggity Dog 4–H club, I didn't know a
whole lot about dog training or dogs in general. Training my Jack Russel Terrier has been a roller
coaster ride, and I am very thankful you have been here to guide me. Previous to his training he was
unmanageable and infuriating. He did not mind, or even try to comprehend what I desired from him.
Three years ago, at my first Hot Diggity Dog meeting, I was extremely nervous. I wasn't nervous
because I would be meeting and talking in front of new people, but because I would have to bring
my dog to meetings and show how badly behaved he was. Since then,

Fears In Stephen King : The Fear Of Horror
When you think of fear, what do you think of? Do you think of something you are absolutely
terrified of and do not want to think about or something else. Fear is programmed in your brain as
something you want to stay away from for safety. Like when we touched a hot pan and burned
ourselves now we will not do that again for fear of being burned. Mr.King states three claims that
we go to horror movies to have fun and that we go to feel normal and the last one That we go to face
our fears but is that really true?
For the fun of the massacre, That's a reason we go to horror movies. We go to see the things that we
would think could never happen to us but you want to know what they are like. In the grim story
"little redcap" there is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this story "The frog king" did not have a horror element but did convey the point of feeling
normal. The story itself was like a spinoff of the princess and the frog or vice versa. But the plot was
that their was a princess and she made a promise with a frog to get her ball back from the bottom of
a well. Since she rescued the frog from the well he turned into a prince. Throughout the story the
princes keeps saying how she was disgusted by the frog. Stephen king said "Fred Jackson as the
horrible melting woman in Die, Monster, Die confirms that no matter how far we may be removed
from the beauty of Robert Redford or Diana Ross, we are still light years from true ugliness." So
through this quote he tells us that comparing ourselves to his characters we can feel like celebrities.
We can compare ourselves to the frog and make ourselves feel better about the way we look.
Now lastly there is the third reason that we go to face their fears. I believe that we have fears for a
reason and that people do not just face them. The definition of fear is an unpleasant emotion caused
by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. So knowing
this fact why would you want to go against something programmed in your brain to stay away from
because it's a threat. Like when you were a kid and you touched a hot pan and burned yourself now
you know not to touch it again for the fear of being burned again. In

Good Vs Evil Quotes
Good versus Evil how will it turn out in the end? In the story in the "Lord of the Flies" by William
Golding there are boys that are stranded on an island. The boys try to stay as a whole group so the
boys set some rules and chose a leader. The boys chose Ralph to be the leader and he tries his best,
but then another kid named Jack started his own group. Then everyone went to his group except
Ralph and a few others. Then it ended as just Ralph against Jack in his group. Based of Good and
Evil by the end Ralph is good and see that Jack is Evil.
As said before, it is shown that Ralph is good and Jack is Evil. Ralph is good because he stands for
civilization and all that is good like getting back to their homes to their family. On the other hand ...

Ralph could be evil because he wants to focus on hard work and not fun unlike Jack so that could
mean Ralph would be one of those mean teachers at school and Jack one of those fun teachers who
do mostly activities and the activities are fun activities. "Jack ignored him, lifted his spear and began
to shout. 'LIsten, all of you. Me and my hunters, we're living along the beach by a flat rock. We hunt
and feast and have fun . If you want to join my tribe come and see us. Perhaps I'll let you join.
Perhaps not." (pg.140) This says that Jack is having fun and if anyone who wants to just have fun
can come. Who does not want fun. It is like saying you hate fun activities. Some example are roller
coasters, watching a movie, playing card games, playing board games, playing games in general.
Those are some examples, but there are more there are people who don't like some of those but
hating all of them I don't know a single person who does. "When the meeting over they'd work for
five minutes, then wander off or go hunting.'. . . 'We want meat' 'Well, we haven't got any yet. And
we want shelters. Besides, the rest of your hunters came back hours ago. They've been swimming."
(pg.51) This shows how Ralph is only focused on work work work and be only wants work to be
done instead of going and having fun. That is how Jack is good and Ralph is

Carolina Pigeon Club Research Paper
James was introduced to the local clubs and Roller competitions in his early forties. He refers to the
period before this time as his "backyard flying years." "Before I met Larry Pridmore and acquired
his pedigreed Pensom birds, a guy named Paul Porter, who was from Orangeburg, South Carolina,
would come by my house every so often with his pickup truck carrying full crates of live poultry
animals. This was the same guy that Tony bought the mother of Shooting Star from and called her
the Orangeburg Hen. Anyway, when Paul came by, if I had any Rollers that I wanted to get rid of,
Paul would trade me some. Most of these birds that I got from him were not banded. There were

that still exists today. Established in 1940, the CPC membership has included Wendell Levi and
Harold Moise (Palmetto Pigeon Plant), Irvin DeGaris (Modenas), D.W. DuPont, James Goethe
(Kings), and many other well–known fanciers. In addition to CPC, in the late '50s or '60s Palmetto
Roller Association (PRA), one of the oldest Competition Roller clubs in SC, was formed. Members
of PRA were predominantly Greenville, South Carolina, area fliers but this club would have pigeon
shows as well as competition flying. In the early '70s, each PRA member would fly one kit for 20
minutes with a break so the judge could rest his neck and eyes after the first ten minutes.
Participants would normally fly 13 bird kits in these local competitions, and according to Larry
Pridmore, this club was strongly affiliated with the United Roller Club (URC). Well–known local
fliers like John Castro, Tony Roberts, Frank Bailer, and Jack Madeline were members of the PRA,
which according to my research, was the first Roller Competition Club of the region. Piedmont,
Carolina, and Foothill Clubs, which were solely Roller Competition clubs, came into existence
much later, but South Carolina breeders always had good competition and show pigeon clubs since

The Jack Roller A Delinquent Boy 's Own Story Essay
The Jack Roller A Delinquent Boy's Own Story by Clifford Shaw was published in 1930 and it tells
the story of a boy named Stanley. Throughout the book, Stanley talks about his life and the injustices
that he dealt with. The downfall of his life occurred when he was just four years old when his
mother passed away, leaving his father to take care of three children. Soon after the death of his
mother, his father becomes an alcoholic and remarries a woman who has seven children of her own.
This leads to twelve people sharing four rooms in a basement apartment. Stanley's father did the best
he could to provide a roof over his family's head and food for them to eat, but he did not provide any
love for his children, which in his eyes was all he needed to do. In addition, he was blind to the fact
that his new wife was abusive to his children and that she would send Stanley out to steal food. Soon
fate would take Stanley's younger siblings out of their home and place them in a foster home.
Unfortunately, Stanley was kept in the abusive and neglectful home. When Stanley decided, he
could no longer take the abuse of his stepmother, he decided to escape from her by running away
and living out on the street. One must wonder why the social workers did not also place him in a
foster home; like they did with his siblings. If Stanley was placed in a foster home, he may have
never committed any crimes. A reason why Stanley may not have been put in a foster home at that
time was because

Twelve Angry Men
What can be said about Twelve Angry Men that hasn't already been said before with more
eloquence. Sidney Lumet's first and arguably best feature has entered into the annals of film history
and has been picked apart ad nauseum by critics, industry professionals and academics alike. Twelve
men walk into a jury room eleven say guilty, the one played by Henry Fonda says not guilty; etc.
etc.
There is a reason for this however; not the least of which is the films enduring timelessness made all
the more impressive by its subject matter. Made during the decline of the studio system, the film
was an oddity onto itself. A tiny black and white film at a time of Technicolor, a principle cast of
character actors at a time of A–list credit cramming, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most of the film takes place in a single room and most of the information pertinent to the case is told
second–handedly. Despite this, the film has the tension of a modern day thriller and then some. The
dialogue is so innately organic though never rambling and the characterizations are rich and
detailed. The camera moves through the room effortlessly making enough cuts to keep things
interesting without being distracting. Many large lugubrious epics wish they could keep things this
interesting! The inspired script written by Reginald Rose is so fluid that it has been open to
interpretation not all of which are good. Many argue that Fonda's Juror #8 manipulates the other
jurors and is less a fleshed out character than a symbol of ivory tower intellectualism. Additionally
the points he raises range from valid to a bit sketchy and he takes "beyond reasonable doubt" to
extremes. I wouldn't put it quite in that context. I think just like everyone else in the room, Juror #8's
choices are made based on his personal perspective. He feels compelled to push and push because
no one else will. It's a character flaw that may not be admonished like the racial ramblings of Juror
#10 (Ed Begley) but isn't legitimized by definitive answers

Things Change In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding
Everything is constantly changing around us, and the changes that happen always happen so fast.
Everyone just accepts the fact that things change, but no one ever questions why they do. Why do
things change? More specifically, why do things change in the book Lord of the Flies by William
Golding? The boys were on the island for just a few weeks, and they went from civilized to savage.
In this essay I will be answering Ralph's question: "What makes things break up the way they do?"
Things break up the way they do because of Ralph's failure to maintain civility in the boys, Jack
success with hunting, and finally the life style that Jack offers to all the boys. All of those are the
main reasons why civilization couldn't be maintained on the ... Show more content on

He is charismatic, good looking, intelligent, and overall he is just a natural leader, and he also
worked the hardest to maintain the groups focus to get rescued. By himself, he investigated Castle
Rock, not minding the assumption that there might be a beast. This is just one of the many examples
of Ralph's leadership throughout the novel. But Ralph like any other person, has a capacity level. He
could only handle so much. Over time, Ralph lost his leadership mojo, and he couldn't control the
group, and maintain civility. For example, in chapter five Ralph is addressing the problems that he's
having with the boys because they weren't listening to the group's rules, but towards the end Ralph
loses control of the meeting the he called. Ralph said, "If I don't blow the conch and they don't come
back: then we've had it. We shan't keep the fire going. We'll be like animals. We'll never be rescued"
(92.) In this quote, Ralph realized that his meeting went sour, and the conch wouldn't have been
taken seriously if he used it to call the group back to the meeting. He knows that he got his point
across and nothing else could be said, and that if he used the conch again it would be devalued and
meaningless. The conch is supposed to represent the civility on the island, and he knows that he
can't abuse that tool. This whole situation occurred because Ralph failed to maintain the civility in
the assembly, and this is one of the tipping points factoring in to why things broke the way they

Martin Scorsese's The Departed Essays
The Departed, a film written by William Monahan, Alan Mak, and Felix Chong, directed by Martin
Scorsese, was in my opinion a spectacular crime–thriller deserving of less criticism from overly
sentimental viewers. Though this film is in some scenes brutal and vicious, I praise Martin
Scorsese's refusal to cower away from the undeniable truth that organized crime in the United States
is murderous in nature just to satisfy certain viewers as critics advocated he should. Being a four
time Oscar winning film with sixty–three other awards for numerous aspects in the movie industry, I
don't believe anyone can contradict that The Departed is profoundly unforgettable to masses of

All of the characters presented in the movie have a distinct personality, making the viewer engage
deeply in the heart pumping action and drama. But the actor is nothing without the writer, and not
by any means is The Departed lacking in storyline. As you watch The Departed, Colin Sullivan
(Damon) and Billy Costigan's (DiCaprio) storylines become increasingly in–depth and intertwined.
Starting when Colin Sullivan is just a child and his encounter with Frank Costello's mentorship, the
story then fast–forwards to Costigan and Colin working their way through police training and
eventually amounting to Costigan undercover and Colin as a detective. The side by side comparison
of their lives adds to distinct feelings about the characters. The two "rats" continually work against
each other and narrowly miss seeing each other's faces, even dating the same girl, Madolyn (Verna
Farmiga). This suspense draws watchers to the edge of their seats with anticipation for the
conclusion of the movie. Phenomenal Acting and a jaw dropping storyline are the foremost reasons
why The Departed is by all means a spectacular movie. This film will go down as one of the best
crime thrillers of the 21th century. Many viewers of this movie will find themselves astonished as
the storyline roller–coaster's around making twists and turns never expected. Some may question the

Why We Crave Horror Stephen King Analysis
Paranoia has always been an enemy to many people in the darkness. This irrational fear has
accounted for many sleepless nights, and horror only fuels the fire. Yet, these people are still
captivated by something that produces such unpleasant results. The culprit just might be one thing––
the characteristics, events, and situations that humans all share–– the ingredients to what makes
things such as emotions and ambitions exist; otherwise known as the human condition. Based on
these two notions, it is safe to say that in the article "Why We Crave Horror," Stephen King is
correct in claiming that humans crave horror to display some sort of bravery, to reassure feelings of
normality, and to simply have good time.
Humans have this bizarre characteristic that urges them to face their fears, and this often results in
some unusual habits such as craving for horror. In his article, Stephen King expresses that horror is
an outlet to show that "we are not afraid, that we can ride this roller coaster" (King, "Why We
Crave, 1). This analogy concisely explains how the purpose and the aftermath of riding a roller
coaster is almost identical to watching a horror movie. For instance, most people are afraid of being
the victim of a gruesome murder, but you can still find that the majority of these same people would
enjoy reading a story of a woman violently getting grated on brick until she turns into a soup. As for
roller coasters, it's the same thing. There are some people who are afraid

After reading or watching horror, the emotion produced from this action is similar to that of
someone who just finished watching a documentary on absurdly lazy adults, thinking "at least I'm
not like them." By doing so, we re–establish our normality in our behaviors or positions.
"Strawberry Springs," another piece of work from King, does an exceptional job in fulfilling this
reason for craving horror. The short story depicts the mystery of serial murders of college students
on their campus, all in the perspective of Springheel Jack. Springheel Jack was a normal student like
the most of us, and we all relate to him in many other aspects. What re–establishes our normality is
that, hopefully, we don't go around killing our classmates like he did. Furthermore, he was not even
aware of the shadow that followed him, as he had forgotten of his whereabouts the night before,
pleading that he was "with another woman,"(King, "Strawberry Spring" 5) as his wife suspected he
was, rather than have killed someone, even if both situations would end in a divorce. By reading
"Strawberry Springs" one may feel a sense of relief that they're not dead, that they don't live on a
campus with a serial killer on the loose, or especially, that they are not unknowingly killing their
classmates. All of this leads up to the fact that "no matter how far we may be removed from the

Why We Crave Horror By Stephen King Summary
A Peculiar Sort of Fun Everyone would think only serial killers happen to be in horror movies, but it
can become reality. Real people in this world are capable of doing such a thing. Stephen King states
in the article "Why We Crave Horror", it's part of a "human condition" or that some are just mentally
ill in the fact of thinking that it is something normal. In the story "Strawberry Spring" they talk of a
serial killer "Springheel Jack" who has taken another victim from New Sharon College. It makes a

Stephen King views entertainment and excitement as seeing other brutally menaced. The excitement
comes from fear, disgust, panic and other negative emotions. He calls this sort of behavior " a
peculiar sort of fun." People try to feel and exercise it by watching horror movies. Horror movie
makes us see things that are not openly encouraged in real life, such as fear and violence, yet allows
us to experience them without requiring us to act them out real life. King says that everyone is
insane in a certain way, although the insanity has been repressed since childhood through the
process of socialization and civilization. Horror films bring out the viewers' uncivilized emotions
which inspire the violent acts of aggression. We all have two different emotions in us, compassion,
love, kindness, loyalty, and friendship, our other side of emotions is where we laugh at a "sick joke"
of the dead or horrifying fairy tales. Horror films have a horrid, dirty, job to do. Stephen King says,
"it deliberately appeals to all that is worst in us," (King, "Why We Crave"). By that he means it lets
out our buried instincts free, and our ugliest imaginations out. King then proves that point by saying
"all you need is love, at longest you keep the gators fed," (King, "Why We Crave") to keep our
insanity down. The gators represent your inner beast, and they must be kept fed to stop from getting
out of you. Since many people

Tacoma Narrows Bridge
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Washington State had taken three years to complete its building
process. It experienced a terrible fate as it collapsed only four months after final construction.
During its short existence only vertical vibrations of the bridge were noticed, and the bridge became
famously known as "Galloping Gertie" due to the swaying of the roadway under high wind
conditions. A positive correlation was observed between the wind's speeds and the bridge's
vibrations in certain tests, yet contradictory results are also in existence which prove no correlation
between the two. Tourists who paid the bridge toll to venture across the swaying bridge,
encompassed by seemingly disappearing vehicles, often considered this bridge a roller–coaster ride
with a riding fee tacked on. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a replacement for the ferry system in place to venture across the Tacoma Narrows, the 2,800 feet
long bridge was created. However, in an attempt to make the bridge more cost–effective, it was built
with an unusual design for a suspension bridge– an extremely thin frame of only thirty–nine feet.
This created sufficient space for only two lanes on the roadway. Originally, the bridge was supposed
to be made more sturdy through the addition of trusses, yet there were inadequate funds. As a result,
a cheaper alternative– 8–foot girders– were added on. They were included on the entire expanse of
the bridge. However, there was not a sufficient stiffening effect created on the bridge by these
girders. There was not enough research in existence on aerodynamic stability for suspension bridges,
and wind tunneling/aerodynamic lift was thus not properly accounted

Roller Coaster
For many people, there is only one reason to go to an amusement park: the roller coaster. Some

How does a roller coaster work?
What you may not realize as you're cruising down the track at 60 miles an hour is that the coaster
has no engine. The car is pulled to the top of the first hill at the beginning of the ride, but after that

Differential Association Theory Essay
The Differential Association Theory, established by Edwin Sutherland in 1947, explicit the deviance
of an individual's behavior and how it is learned through interaction with others or associations.
There are several components that play a role in this theory that determines the main causes of
delinquency. One of the components of this theory is, a person do not inherently become a criminal,
it is a learned behavior. A person cannot decide one day he wants to commit a crime if he is not
influence or challenge by others. When someone engages in criminal acts, they are most likely
influence in some way that motivates them to commit the crime.
This relates to another important component and that is, when criminal behavior is learned, the ...

obstacles and behavioral struggles in life during the time from his adolescence adulthood years.
During his childhood years, where most of his delinquency began, he lived in the large Polish

neighborhoods in the city. According to the author it is "surrounded by packing plants, stock yards,

Stephen King Why We Crave Horror Movies Summary
In Stephen King's "Why We Crave Horror Films", King provides his own interpretation on why we
covet horror movies. He initially provides superficial reasons, detailing that we're mainly in it for
the thrill ride, metaphorically comparing it to a roller coaster ride where at certain points, "we may
scream when the roller coaster [makes] a complete 360 or plows through a lake at the bottom of the
drop." As the article goes on, he delves into an analysis of the different levels of sanity and describes
two types of insane individuals: the ones sent to the "funny farm" or the asylum, would tend to
"carve up women like Jack the Ripper or the Cleveland Torso Murderer", and the other who walk
among us just "talk to [themselves]" or "pick [their] nose on the morning bus", ultimately humoring
the fact that they inevitably won't be "invited to the best parties". To reiterate, King's topic for his
article was to explore and interpret why we crave horror films. King's purpose for writing this article
was not only to provide his own answer to the question of said ... Show more content on

First beginning with day one, for lesson preparation I intended to use the student's lunch to take care

minute adjustments and distribution of materials was fine but counting to be able to get the cutting
done during this time was an error in judging the time it would take to cut out the word sort I'd
intended the students to complete for the vocabulary words. This led to a scramble to get the baggies
of cut paper to each student at the opening of the lesson. The definition of work portion went a little
different than expected. A 3rd grader's definition of work is very egocentric. They each gave
personal definitions of work that involved school, or chores. Ms. Morris interjected that a job might
be considered work also to help broaden the student's definition of work. After I gave them the
physics definition of work we completed the "jumping Jack" exercise which I believe helped to
drive home the concept of what had to happen for our new definition of work to be met. At this time
the students were asked to take out their science journals and open the word sort. At this point I
played the rollercoaster video stopping it when we came to terms on the word sort. In retrospect, I
feel the video was unnecessary; I would have rather had a video of a rollercoaster without

Fear In Stephen King : The Fear Of Horror
When you think of fear, what do you think of? Have you ever been absolutely terrified by something
that you become petrified. Your brain is programed to protect you from all threats to your body this
protection is known as fear. When we touched a hot pan along with burning ourselves now we will
not do that repeatedly for fear of being burned. Mr. King states, three claims that we go to horror
movies to have fun also we go to feel normal then at last, we go to face our fears but is that
genuinely true?
For the fun of the massacre, That's a reason we go to horror movies. We go to see the horror scenes
that we would think could never happen to us, but you are intrigued to know what they are. In the
grim story "little red cap" there is a perfect example of this. In this story was the original story of
little red hood where The wolf followed her to her grandmother's house. But rather the little girl
going to save her grandmother they both become victims while also being massacred by the wolf.
But when you read this you can't help but to laugh in a peculiar sort of way. For that laugh is why
we go to have fun. For instance the public lynching you saw someone in agonizing pain, but
something about it made you want to go see the lynching over and over. This has to do with Stephen
King's theory that we have a little psycho or when he also says "I think we're all mentally ill;"
(Stephen King why we crave horror). He also says that that urge or insanity we had that made us
want

August Pullman Research Paper
Life. From what people have said, it is hard; imagine how much harder your life would be if you
had a face like August Pullman. People complain way to much over unimportant things. If there is
really a need to complain please make it reasonable. I can understand why August would complain
because he has a deformed face, which he can not do anything about. Out of all people, August
Pullman was born with a deformed face because he could handle how he looks and what people say
about him, although it is hard. August Pullman was one out of four million people to have a
deformed face which is very unfortunate. God knew that someone had to have the deformed face,
and he knew that August would be able to deal with what people say and think about him, most of
the time. When people would stare at him he would usually brush it off of his shoulders and act like
nothing happened. The only time in the book where August really could not handle his looks is
when Jack said to Julian that he would kill himself if he looked like August. Other than what Jack

I say this because he handles it so well. On the other hand some people would not be able to take the
bullying. Bullying is one of the things that causes suicide. In my opinion, killing yourself is the most
ignorant thing to do. Why would anyone want to end a life that God has given you? Even if you are
not a Christian it is still very wrong and sad to commit suicide, even if you think it is okay. Suicide
is giving up on your life, which is not smart because life will always have bumps in the road no
matter what. These bumps can be as small as not making a sports team to as big as getting cancer.

The Pornography Of The Porn Industry In The Teens
What a surprise to find out that the film I choose for a college midterm portrayed the porn industry
in the 1970s. To say I was shocked would be an understatement and when I first started watching
this movie, I didn't know if I could confront this no–no subject. However, after a little soul
searching, I realized that society told me as a woman not to talk about porn and so here I am writing
a four–page midterm on "Boogie Nights", a film set in the 1970s Fernando Valley. The movie tells
the story of a 17–year–old boy's adventure from abusive mother to award winner porn actor and the
artistry behind a seemingly dirty subject. "Boogie Nights" was written and directed by Paul Thomas
Anderson, also known for other masterpieces such as "There will be Blood", "Magnolia", and "The
Master" (IMDB). The film won several awards which were all too long to list out and it also
happens to be the film's 20th birthday. Is there a better way to celebrate than tearing it apart piece by
piece for academic purposes? I think not. With the rolling in of the 1970s came a huge expansion of
pornography in the United States. The industry went from "an underground cottage to an open,
aggressive $2 billion–a–year industry." (Time magazine) The porn industry had a long history of
criminal investigation and persecution in previous decades. However, the court system lost its
authority and power over porn filmmakers, and they went wild. "Boogie Nights" is a film that
wholly shows the boom in this

Baccarat
While Baccarat, the popular casino card game, may seem simple to the observer, there are a myriad
of rules and betting strategies involved. Despite this fact, it has a low house advantage, and is
therefore popular among novices and high–rollers alike. Baccarat games can differ in table size –
Big Table Baccarat is usually reserved for the wealthy and adventurous; Mini–Baccarat is more
modest in scale, and it is almost always possible to find a wider variety of players, including those
seeking lower stakes.
At the beginning of a game, a player is given the role of "banker", and starts the deal. Other players
are known as "punters." The designated banker position rotates counterclockwise from then on. The
banker casts the first bet. If one of the other players decide to match the wager, it is ... Show more

One at a time, cards are dealt to players, face–down. There are three possible winning scenarios in
Baccarat – banker, player, or tie. Players can bet on any of these choices, or any combinations
thereof. Cards 2–9 are worth face value, aces just a point, and the tens, jacks, queens, and kings have
no value. As cards are added to a hand, any values over ten are automatically discarded. For
example, a seven and a nine have a value of 16–10 = 6. Hands can be valued at 0–9 points, and the
highest–valued hand indicates the winning outcome. Ties happen when both the banker and the
player have the same value in their hands. In order to cash in on this situation, you have to actually
place a wager on "tie."
Due to its lower probability of occurring, the tie option has the lowest odds, and therefore, the
highest payout. Correct banker or player wagers only pay 1:1, but a tie pays at 8–1. In Baccarat, the
house has a relatively low advantage over the players, only about 1%–1.5%. Some game versions
have a 5% commission taken by the banker for any wagers placed on his

Persuasive Essay On Horrors
I think that we're all mentally ill; those of us outside the asylums only hide it a little better – and
maybe not all that much better, after all. We've all known people who talk to themselves, people
who sometimes squinch their faces into horrible grimaces when they believe no one is watching,
people who have some hysterical fear – of snakes, the dark, the tight place, the long drop . . . and, of
course, those final worms and grubs that are waiting so patiently underground.
When we pay our four or five bucks and seat ourselves at tenth–row center in a theater showing a
horror movie, we are daring the nightmare.
Why? Some of the reasons are simple and obvious. To show that we can, that we are not afraid, that
we can ride this roller coaster. Which is not to say that a really good horror movie may not surprise a
scream out of us at some point, the way we may scream when the roller coaster twists through a
complete 360 or plows through a lake at the bottom of the drop. And horror movies, like roller
coasters, have always been the special province of the young; by the time one turns 40 or 50, one's
appetite for double twists or
360–degree loops may be considerably depleted.
We also go to re–establish our feelings of essential normality; the horror movie is innately
conservative, even reactionary. Freda Jackson as the horrible melting woman in
Die, Monster, Die! confirms for us that no matter how far we may be removed from the beauty of a
Robert Redford or a Diana Ross, we are

Jane Eyre, The Great Divorce, And The Importance Of The Heart
William Faulkner once said that in order for a work to be considered good writing, it needs to
display a conflict within the heart. The three summer reading books, Jane Eyre, The Great Divorce,
and The Importance of Being Earnest, all certainly present some internal conflict within major
characters. Through these conflicts, the major characters have to make decisions in the books and
these decisions have grand consequences. These decisions teach the readers very valuable moral
lessons. Through displaying internal conflicts within characters like Jack, Jane, and Ikey, authors
Oscar Wilde, C.S. Lewis, and Charlotte Bronte follow Faulkner's definition of good writing while
also teaching the readers about morality and giving wisdom about life. The first work that displays a
conflict of the heart is The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. In this play, a character
known as Jack has to make a very tough decision that involves the woman that he loves. After lying
to everyone about having a troublesome brother and faking his identity, Ernest decides to attempt at
killing off Ernest in the Second Act. He goes to Miss Prism and says "He died abroad; in Paris, in
fact. I had a telegram last night from the manager of the Grand Hotel" (Wilde 29). This decision
within seems as if it was really difficult. The reader obviously knows that Jack has an internal
conflict since the girl he loves, Gwendolyn, only likes him because of his name. This decision to kill
off Ernest

Peer Pressure In Crank, Lord Of The Flies, And Always Running
Peer Pressure Peer pressure is being influenced by a group of people to do something that one would
not do otherwise. Teens between the ages of twelve and seventeen were given a survey and ninety
percent of them said they have given in to peer pressure and twenty eight percent of them feel as if it
helped their social standing. These teens are not the only ones who give into peer pressure, many
adults do too. Crank, Lord of the Flies, and Always Running are pieces of literature that show
different situations in which one can give into peer pressure. In the excerpt Crank, Ellen Hopkins
describes how one feels while being peer pressured in a school environment. She does this by
comparing peer pressure to a roller coaster. While waiting in line for the roller coaster one is anxious
and excited, as if they were waiting for a new school year to begin. Then they finally get into their
seat and are buckled in like the beginning of the school year, still anxious but not as nervous. Right
when the roller coaster hits its peak and is about to drop everyone is silent, this is when the child is
peer pressured. They are silent because they are trying to decide if they should join the others that
are giving them peer pressure or do what they think is best. Now the big drop, this is their decision

against the New York Giants on September 20, 1933, losing 23–2. All throughout the 1930's, the
Pirates did not play very good. But in 1938 they made history by signing Byron White, a future U.S.
Supreme Court justice. But a season later he left the Pirates to play on the Detroit Lions. Just before

they combined with the Chicago Cardinals to make the team Card–Pitt, or as the public would call

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Roller-Compacted Concrete
Roller–compacted concrete (RCC) is a stiff mixture of aggregates, cementitious materials, and water
with zero slump. RCC is consolidated or compacted in the fresh state by use of a roller with or
without vibration. RCC typically is placed with asphalt paving equipment in thicknesses of 4 to 8
inches for pavement application. RCC has gained the attention of the paving industry in recent years
and is becoming more popular day by day because of its low cost, rapid construction, and durable
performance. The energy required to compact RCC mixtures to their maximum densities is much
greater than for concrete of measurable slump. The largest difference between RCC mixtures and
conventional concrete mixtures is that RCC has a higher percentage of fine ... Show more content on

(ii) Low unit costs of RCC: The unit cost of low paste mass concrete is favorable; to reduce the heat
of hydration a significant portion of cement is usually replaced by locally available pozzolanic
materials or fly ash.
(iii) Incorporation of spillway into dam body: Due to the slope of the downstream face of 1:0.8
(gravity dams) to 1:0.4 (arch–gravity dams), the spillway can directly be incorporated into the dam
body which helps to accommodate large floods and which are in need of large spillways.
(iv) Use of shape of conventional dams: Because the stresses in gravity type dams are low, the
cross–sections of RCC dams are the same as those of conventional dams.
(v)Heat generation: RCC is more favorable while taking into consideration the heat dissipation
which always remains a vital issue for mass concreting structures.
Because of the above advantages, RCC dams are interesting alternatives to conventional dams in
most parts of the world. An example of RCC dam is shown in the Figure–1 built along Santa Cruz

Horror In Stephen King's Why We Crave Horror Movies
The first time I watched a horror movie, I was nine years old. While all of my cousins shrieked and
closed their eyes, I felt totally engaged. Will we become more violent if we watch these movies?
Will we become a gore–loving, emotionally insensitive society? What is it about scary movies that
we love so much? It all comes back to the Human Condition. Facing our fears, establishing our
sense of normalcy, and experiencing a weird sort of fun are all solid claims that Stephen King states
in his essay "Why We Crave Horror Movies."
Horror is an opportunity for us humans to face our fears. Reading Stephen King's short story
"Strawberry Spring"is a perfect example that we use horror to "show that...we are not afraid" (King,
"Why We Crave" 1). We go to prove ourselves as brave. In comparison, watching horror movies is
alike "daring the nightmare" (King, "Why We Crave" 1). In this case, the "nightmare" is facing our
fears, considering horror films are equivalent to going through a literal nightmare. To point out, the
narrator in "Strawberry Spring" is "enchanted by that dark and mist–blown strawberry spring, and
by the shadow of violent death that walked through it..." (King, "Strawberry Spring" 1). As a matter
of fact, we are all enchanted by the darkness in the story just as the narrator is. Additionally, King
describes this process as riding a roller coaster by reason of "a really good horror movie may...
surprise a scream out of us... the way we may scream when the roller coaster

Relationship Between The Relationship In Pirates Of The...
An important relationship that is shown in the visual text Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the
Black Pearl (2003), directed by Gore Verbinski was between two main characters, Captain Jack
Sparrow and Will Turner. Their relationship was one of the most important in the film as it shows us
how these two characters have changed their perspectives of the world and most importantly,
towards each other. There are several examples of how their relationship changes throughout. At the
beginning of the film, Jack considers Will as a lame commoner and Will was quite stereotypical
about Jack being a 'pirate'. Their animosity and hatred were quite mutual given their respective
backgrounds. As the movie progresses, this relationship is more about one's own benefits. They
realise and understand each other's strengths and weaknesses well and use each other selfishly.
Towards the end, this selfish attitude matures into friendship. At the beginning of the film, Jack and
Will had completely different opinions about each other. Jack Sparrow, a clever, cunning and
calculated man saw Will as a lay man and would find it hard to believe that they would become
friends. Pirates in those days or even today are considered hard core criminals. Will being raised as a
common man, irrespective of his past also think the same. The Black Pearl being at the pinnacle of
evilness people consider the pirates on that ship to be the worst of mankind. The slightest hint that
Jack Sparrow is associated with the

grabbed all of our stuff for the day and went into the park. As soon as we walked into the park, there

which ride we would go on first. The whole group chose Patriot, a short but screaming fast ride with
two loops. I was petrified, I definitely did not want to do this, but I mumbled out "ok, let's do it."

Lord Of The Flies By William Golding
All of a sudden, a group of children find themselves stranded on an island in the middle of
nowhere–pretty scary right? Well this is just what happens in William Golding's Lord of the Flies.
This piece of literature is used by the author to describe the very real society of human beings,
through the eyes of young, "innocent" children. There is savagery, evil, goodness at heart, and the
sense of hope, whether being lost or discovered, in this book. In Lord of the Flies, there are multiple
different symbols that Golding uses to show the fall of society. Two of them being the beautiful
conch shell, and the hopeful signal fire. These two symbols are brought up throughout the book,
however, they don't always bring out the best in the boys living on the island. Throughout Lord of
the Flies, it's noticed how the signal fire is used to show the deterioration of the boys' hope in rescue,
and overall loss of hope in themselves and each other. One of the main characters, Ralph, sees a ship
near the island. He runs up to the top of the mountain where the fire sits and discovers there is no
more smoke, so, "Ralph reached down inside him for the worst word he knew. 'They let the bloody
fire go out'" (Golding 68). In this scene, Ralph had sent another character, Jack, and some of his
buddies to look after the fire for a while. What happens is Jack and his friends run down the
mountain to go hunting and they forget about their duty of watching the fire. As Ralph realizes that

The Basic Function Of The Hydraulic System
As we know that there is increase in population and due to this there is a very high demand of
vehicles. As the sales of cars and bikes are increasing there is a shortage of parking spaces. People
park their cars on road, which causes very long traffic jams and due to this common man faces a lot
of problems. So we came up with what was called "Multilevel Parking".
Its sounds pretty cool, but the main problem was how are we going to achieve it?
We build track through the building for the vehicles to take them on different parking level, which
will cost more and will not be for generations.
Another solution was using Hydraulics, motors and electric system to take the cars to different level
and it will last much longer.

How Automated parking System Work
Automated car parking system using a similar type of technology to use the package for mechanical

The driver leaves the car inside the system/parking lot with the help of equipments (like sensors) the
vehicle is parked in an assigned area. Hydraulic lift or Mechanical jack is used to move the vehicle
to higher or lower levels of the parking for proper parking. The vehicle can be moved vertically in
the parking (up down) and horizontally (left or right) until the car needed again. When the vehicle is
required, the process is reversed and the transport car raises the vehicle again to the same area where
the driver left. In some cases, a turntable be used to position the car so that the driver comfortable
drive away without saving the need. The car parking system uses hydraulic lifters for this purpose.

Courtesy of Le Zets Courtesy of Le Zets Everything has been done before, and the trick is to craft

My Act Of Courage

  • 1. My Act Of Courage My act of courage in life is noting extraordinary, but it was a big deal for me and to this day I'm grateful that I was able to overcome it, because now I love riding roller coasters. Anyway the fear at the time (last year) was riding roller coasters because I was scared I might fall out of my seat and die, and as I got older it was becoming more of a problem. Plus, as a "teenager" it's hard to find something fun besides roller coasters and expensive rigged carnival games at theme parks like Six Flags. But once summer had started I knew something was going to have to change and I had to get over this silly little fear. This was because at the time Six Flags was the place to be, plus my mom had gotten me and my sister season passes that we could use quite often. The time came on one faithful day during the summer when my sister convinces me to go ride my first roller coaster The Batman. It of course was a terrifying and exciting experience, and right when we got to in line my heart began to race, and the only thing that was keeping me in line was my sister reassuring me that it was fun and that I wouldn't die. So as the line would move even a little bit I would have mini heart attacks and have to calm myself. This would go on for a while until we got to the dark staircase with only a red and white flashing lights to guide us. This made it a little worse because I'm so clumsy and now that I couldn't see very well a new fear had appeared and now I was worrying about tripping ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Analysis Of A Peculiar Sort Of Fun By Stephen King A Peculiar Sort of Fun When I was younger I remember being told the most terrifying story and it repeating in my head over and over again, why would people purporposly watch things to feel this type of fear? Stephen King constantly reminds readers why people crave horror so badly, which is to challenge their fears, feel more normal compared to others, and to of course experience fun and excitement fear creates the Human Condition to crave horror. We crave horror to show that we can; to experience an adrenaline rush. Stephen King compares roller coasters to movies because on both it keeps us guessing the next move and makes us scream in different parts. King suggests that we go for the dare of it, to see how far it can push us, and that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the story "Strawberry Spring" we make a connection towards a guy who is a psychopath serial killer. His sort of fun is being with woman and then killing them for no particular sort of reason. It is true that all humans have a dark side. Stephen King states in the short story "Why We Crave Horror Movies" that "the fun comes from seeing others menaced sometimes killed". What this means is we have fun when we see someone get killed in movies because we know that's not us and it won't happen in our life ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Hot Diggity Dog Training Report I would like to take a moment and thank you properly for all of your assistance and effort in helping me learn how to train dogs. When I first started your Hot Diggity Dog 4–H club, I didn't know a whole lot about dog training or dogs in general. Training my Jack Russel Terrier has been a roller coaster ride, and I am very thankful you have been here to guide me. Previous to his training he was unmanageable and infuriating. He did not mind, or even try to comprehend what I desired from him. Three years ago, at my first Hot Diggity Dog meeting, I was extremely nervous. I wasn't nervous because I would be meeting and talking in front of new people, but because I would have to bring my dog to meetings and show how badly behaved he was. Since then, ... • 13. Fears In Stephen King : The Fear Of Horror When you think of fear, what do you think of? Do you think of something you are absolutely terrified of and do not want to think about or something else. Fear is programmed in your brain as something you want to stay away from for safety. Like when we touched a hot pan and burned ourselves now we will not do that again for fear of being burned. Mr.King states three claims that we go to horror movies to have fun and that we go to feel normal and the last one That we go to face our fears but is that really true? For the fun of the massacre, That's a reason we go to horror movies. We go to see the things that we would think could never happen to us but you want to know what they are like. In the grim story "little redcap" there is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this story "The frog king" did not have a horror element but did convey the point of feeling normal. The story itself was like a spinoff of the princess and the frog or vice versa. But the plot was that their was a princess and she made a promise with a frog to get her ball back from the bottom of a well. Since she rescued the frog from the well he turned into a prince. Throughout the story the princes keeps saying how she was disgusted by the frog. Stephen king said "Fred Jackson as the horrible melting woman in Die, Monster, Die confirms that no matter how far we may be removed from the beauty of Robert Redford or Diana Ross, we are still light years from true ugliness." So through this quote he tells us that comparing ourselves to his characters we can feel like celebrities. We can compare ourselves to the frog and make ourselves feel better about the way we look. Now lastly there is the third reason that we go to face their fears. I believe that we have fears for a reason and that people do not just face them. The definition of fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. So knowing this fact why would you want to go against something programmed in your brain to stay away from because it's a threat. Like when you were a kid and you touched a hot pan and burned yourself now you know not to touch it again for the fear of being burned again. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Good Vs Evil Quotes Good versus Evil how will it turn out in the end? In the story in the "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding there are boys that are stranded on an island. The boys try to stay as a whole group so the boys set some rules and chose a leader. The boys chose Ralph to be the leader and he tries his best, but then another kid named Jack started his own group. Then everyone went to his group except Ralph and a few others. Then it ended as just Ralph against Jack in his group. Based of Good and Evil by the end Ralph is good and see that Jack is Evil. As said before, it is shown that Ralph is good and Jack is Evil. Ralph is good because he stands for civilization and all that is good like getting back to their homes to their family. On the other hand ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ralph could be evil because he wants to focus on hard work and not fun unlike Jack so that could mean Ralph would be one of those mean teachers at school and Jack one of those fun teachers who do mostly activities and the activities are fun activities. "Jack ignored him, lifted his spear and began to shout. 'LIsten, all of you. Me and my hunters, we're living along the beach by a flat rock. We hunt and feast and have fun . If you want to join my tribe come and see us. Perhaps I'll let you join. Perhaps not." (pg.140) This says that Jack is having fun and if anyone who wants to just have fun can come. Who does not want fun. It is like saying you hate fun activities. Some example are roller coasters, watching a movie, playing card games, playing board games, playing games in general. Those are some examples, but there are more there are people who don't like some of those but hating all of them I don't know a single person who does. "When the meeting over they'd work for five minutes, then wander off or go hunting.'. . . 'We want meat' 'Well, we haven't got any yet. And we want shelters. Besides, the rest of your hunters came back hours ago. They've been swimming." (pg.51) This shows how Ralph is only focused on work work work and be only wants work to be done instead of going and having fun. That is how Jack is good and Ralph is ... • 21. Carolina Pigeon Club Research Paper James was introduced to the local clubs and Roller competitions in his early forties. He refers to the period before this time as his "backyard flying years." "Before I met Larry Pridmore and acquired his pedigreed Pensom birds, a guy named Paul Porter, who was from Orangeburg, South Carolina, would come by my house every so often with his pickup truck carrying full crates of live poultry animals. This was the same guy that Tony bought the mother of Shooting Star from and called her the Orangeburg Hen. Anyway, when Paul came by, if I had any Rollers that I wanted to get rid of, Paul would trade me some. Most of these birds that I got from him were not banded. There were also few other local pigeon breeders that I bought or traded birds with, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Carolina Pigeon Club (CPC) is the oldest all–breed show club in the southeastern United States that still exists today. Established in 1940, the CPC membership has included Wendell Levi and Harold Moise (Palmetto Pigeon Plant), Irvin DeGaris (Modenas), D.W. DuPont, James Goethe (Kings), and many other well–known fanciers. In addition to CPC, in the late '50s or '60s Palmetto Roller Association (PRA), one of the oldest Competition Roller clubs in SC, was formed. Members of PRA were predominantly Greenville, South Carolina, area fliers but this club would have pigeon shows as well as competition flying. In the early '70s, each PRA member would fly one kit for 20 minutes with a break so the judge could rest his neck and eyes after the first ten minutes. Participants would normally fly 13 bird kits in these local competitions, and according to Larry Pridmore, this club was strongly affiliated with the United Roller Club (URC). Well–known local fliers like John Castro, Tony Roberts, Frank Bailer, and Jack Madeline were members of the PRA, which according to my research, was the first Roller Competition Club of the region. Piedmont, Carolina, and Foothill Clubs, which were solely Roller Competition clubs, came into existence much later, but South Carolina breeders always had good competition and show pigeon clubs since at least the ... • 25. The Jack Roller A Delinquent Boy 's Own Story Essay The Jack Roller A Delinquent Boy's Own Story by Clifford Shaw was published in 1930 and it tells the story of a boy named Stanley. Throughout the book, Stanley talks about his life and the injustices that he dealt with. The downfall of his life occurred when he was just four years old when his mother passed away, leaving his father to take care of three children. Soon after the death of his mother, his father becomes an alcoholic and remarries a woman who has seven children of her own. This leads to twelve people sharing four rooms in a basement apartment. Stanley's father did the best he could to provide a roof over his family's head and food for them to eat, but he did not provide any love for his children, which in his eyes was all he needed to do. In addition, he was blind to the fact that his new wife was abusive to his children and that she would send Stanley out to steal food. Soon fate would take Stanley's younger siblings out of their home and place them in a foster home. Unfortunately, Stanley was kept in the abusive and neglectful home. When Stanley decided, he could no longer take the abuse of his stepmother, he decided to escape from her by running away and living out on the street. One must wonder why the social workers did not also place him in a foster home; like they did with his siblings. If Stanley was placed in a foster home, he may have never committed any crimes. A reason why Stanley may not have been put in a foster home at that time was because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Twelve Angry Men What can be said about Twelve Angry Men that hasn't already been said before with more eloquence. Sidney Lumet's first and arguably best feature has entered into the annals of film history and has been picked apart ad nauseum by critics, industry professionals and academics alike. Twelve men walk into a jury room eleven say guilty, the one played by Henry Fonda says not guilty; etc. etc. There is a reason for this however; not the least of which is the films enduring timelessness made all the more impressive by its subject matter. Made during the decline of the studio system, the film was an oddity onto itself. A tiny black and white film at a time of Technicolor, a principle cast of character actors at a time of A–list credit cramming, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most of the film takes place in a single room and most of the information pertinent to the case is told second–handedly. Despite this, the film has the tension of a modern day thriller and then some. The dialogue is so innately organic though never rambling and the characterizations are rich and detailed. The camera moves through the room effortlessly making enough cuts to keep things interesting without being distracting. Many large lugubrious epics wish they could keep things this interesting! The inspired script written by Reginald Rose is so fluid that it has been open to interpretation not all of which are good. Many argue that Fonda's Juror #8 manipulates the other jurors and is less a fleshed out character than a symbol of ivory tower intellectualism. Additionally the points he raises range from valid to a bit sketchy and he takes "beyond reasonable doubt" to extremes. I wouldn't put it quite in that context. I think just like everyone else in the room, Juror #8's choices are made based on his personal perspective. He feels compelled to push and push because no one else will. It's a character flaw that may not be admonished like the racial ramblings of Juror #10 (Ed Begley) but isn't legitimized by definitive answers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Things Change In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding Everything is constantly changing around us, and the changes that happen always happen so fast. Everyone just accepts the fact that things change, but no one ever questions why they do. Why do things change? More specifically, why do things change in the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding? The boys were on the island for just a few weeks, and they went from civilized to savage. In this essay I will be answering Ralph's question: "What makes things break up the way they do?" Things break up the way they do because of Ralph's failure to maintain civility in the boys, Jack success with hunting, and finally the life style that Jack offers to all the boys. All of those are the main reasons why civilization couldn't be maintained on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He is charismatic, good looking, intelligent, and overall he is just a natural leader, and he also worked the hardest to maintain the groups focus to get rescued. By himself, he investigated Castle Rock, not minding the assumption that there might be a beast. This is just one of the many examples of Ralph's leadership throughout the novel. But Ralph like any other person, has a capacity level. He could only handle so much. Over time, Ralph lost his leadership mojo, and he couldn't control the group, and maintain civility. For example, in chapter five Ralph is addressing the problems that he's having with the boys because they weren't listening to the group's rules, but towards the end Ralph loses control of the meeting the he called. Ralph said, "If I don't blow the conch and they don't come back: then we've had it. We shan't keep the fire going. We'll be like animals. We'll never be rescued" (92.) In this quote, Ralph realized that his meeting went sour, and the conch wouldn't have been taken seriously if he used it to call the group back to the meeting. He knows that he got his point across and nothing else could be said, and that if he used the conch again it would be devalued and meaningless. The conch is supposed to represent the civility on the island, and he knows that he can't abuse that tool. This whole situation occurred because Ralph failed to maintain the civility in the assembly, and this is one of the tipping points factoring in to why things broke the way they ... • 37. Martin Scorsese's The Departed Essays The Departed, a film written by William Monahan, Alan Mak, and Felix Chong, directed by Martin Scorsese, was in my opinion a spectacular crime–thriller deserving of less criticism from overly sentimental viewers. Though this film is in some scenes brutal and vicious, I praise Martin Scorsese's refusal to cower away from the undeniable truth that organized crime in the United States is murderous in nature just to satisfy certain viewers as critics advocated he should. Being a four time Oscar winning film with sixty–three other awards for numerous aspects in the movie industry, I don't believe anyone can contradict that The Departed is profoundly unforgettable to masses of moviegoers. The film takes place during the height of Irish mob ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All of the characters presented in the movie have a distinct personality, making the viewer engage deeply in the heart pumping action and drama. But the actor is nothing without the writer, and not by any means is The Departed lacking in storyline. As you watch The Departed, Colin Sullivan (Damon) and Billy Costigan's (DiCaprio) storylines become increasingly in–depth and intertwined. Starting when Colin Sullivan is just a child and his encounter with Frank Costello's mentorship, the story then fast–forwards to Costigan and Colin working their way through police training and eventually amounting to Costigan undercover and Colin as a detective. The side by side comparison of their lives adds to distinct feelings about the characters. The two "rats" continually work against each other and narrowly miss seeing each other's faces, even dating the same girl, Madolyn (Verna Farmiga). This suspense draws watchers to the edge of their seats with anticipation for the conclusion of the movie. Phenomenal Acting and a jaw dropping storyline are the foremost reasons why The Departed is by all means a spectacular movie. This film will go down as one of the best crime thrillers of the 21th century. Many viewers of this movie will find themselves astonished as the storyline roller–coaster's around making twists and turns never expected. It was a perfect, sunny day, and everyone was having fun. But this sunny day at Kennywood was about to turn into a terrifying memory I would never forget. We slowly and carefully found a parking space, working around the hundreds cars that were there. My mom slipped out her phone to check the weather. "Wow! It's eighty nine degrees out! • 45. Why We Crave Horror Stephen King Analysis Paranoia has always been an enemy to many people in the darkness. This irrational fear has accounted for many sleepless nights, and horror only fuels the fire. Yet, these people are still captivated by something that produces such unpleasant results. The culprit just might be one thing–– the characteristics, events, and situations that humans all share–– the ingredients to what makes things such as emotions and ambitions exist; otherwise known as the human condition. Based on these two notions, it is safe to say that in the article "Why We Crave Horror," Stephen King is correct in claiming that humans crave horror to display some sort of bravery, to reassure feelings of normality, and to simply have good time. Humans have this bizarre characteristic that urges them to face their fears, and this often results in some unusual habits such as craving for horror. In his article, Stephen King expresses that horror is an outlet to show that "we are not afraid, that we can ride this roller coaster" (King, "Why We Crave, 1). This analogy concisely explains how the purpose and the aftermath of riding a roller coaster is almost identical to watching a horror movie. For instance, most people are afraid of being the victim of a gruesome murder, but you can still find that the majority of these same people would enjoy reading a story of a woman violently getting grated on brick until she turns into a soup. As for roller coasters, it's the same thing. There are some people who are afraid ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After reading or watching horror, the emotion produced from this action is similar to that of someone who just finished watching a documentary on absurdly lazy adults, thinking "at least I'm not like them." By doing so, we re–establish our normality in our behaviors or positions. "Strawberry Springs," another piece of work from King, does an exceptional job in fulfilling this reason for craving horror. The short story depicts the mystery of serial murders of college students on their campus, all in the perspective of Springheel Jack. Springheel Jack was a normal student like the most of us, and we all relate to him in many other aspects. What re–establishes our normality is that, hopefully, we don't go around killing our classmates like he did. Furthermore, he was not even aware of the shadow that followed him, as he had forgotten of his whereabouts the night before, pleading that he was "with another woman,"(King, "Strawberry Spring" 5) as his wife suspected he was, rather than have killed someone, even if both situations would end in a divorce. By reading "Strawberry Springs" one may feel a sense of relief that they're not dead, that they don't live on a campus with a serial killer on the loose, or especially, that they are not unknowingly killing their classmates. All of this leads up to the fact that "no matter how far we may be removed from the beauty of Robert Redford or a Diana Ross," we really are still "light–years from ... Real people in this world are capable of doing such a thing. Stephen King states in the article "Why We Crave Horror", it's part of a "human condition" or that some are just mentally ill in the fact of thinking that it is something normal. In the story "Strawberry Spring" they talk of a serial killer "Springheel Jack" who has taken another victim from New Sharon College. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Stephen King views entertainment and excitement as seeing other brutally menaced. The excitement comes from fear, disgust, panic and other negative emotions. He calls this sort of behavior " a peculiar sort of fun." People try to feel and exercise it by watching horror movies. Horror movie makes us see things that are not openly encouraged in real life, such as fear and violence, yet allows us to experience them without requiring us to act them out real life. King says that everyone is insane in a certain way, although the insanity has been repressed since childhood through the process of socialization and civilization. Horror films bring out the viewers' uncivilized emotions which inspire the violent acts of aggression. We all have two different emotions in us, compassion, love, kindness, loyalty, and friendship, our other side of emotions is where we laugh at a "sick joke" of the dead or horrifying fairy tales. Horror films have a horrid, dirty, job to do. Stephen King says, "it deliberately appeals to all that is worst in us," (King, "Why We Crave"). By that he means it lets out our buried instincts free, and our ugliest imaginations out. King then proves that point by saying "all you need is love, at longest you keep the gators fed," (King, "Why We Crave") to keep our insanity down. It experienced a terrible fate as it collapsed only four months after final construction. During its short existence only vertical vibrations of the bridge were noticed, and the bridge became famously known as "Galloping Gertie" due to the swaying of the roadway under high wind conditions. A positive correlation was observed between the wind's speeds and the bridge's vibrations in certain tests, yet contradictory results are also in existence which prove no correlation between the two. Tourists who paid the bridge toll to venture across the swaying bridge, encompassed by seemingly disappearing vehicles, often considered this bridge a roller–coaster ride with a riding fee tacked on. ... However, in an attempt to make the bridge more cost–effective, it was built with an unusual design for a suspension bridge– an extremely thin frame of only thirty–nine feet. This created sufficient space for only two lanes on the roadway. Originally, the bridge was supposed to be made more sturdy through the addition of trusses, yet there were inadequate funds. As a result, a cheaper alternative– 8–foot girders– were added on. They were included on the entire expanse of the bridge. However, there was not a sufficient stiffening effect created on the bridge by these girders. One of the components of this theory is, a person do not inherently become a criminal, it is a learned behavior. A person cannot decide one day he wants to commit a crime if he is not influence or challenge by others. He initially provides superficial reasons, detailing that we're mainly in it for the thrill ride, metaphorically comparing it to a roller coaster ride where at certain points, "we may scream when the roller coaster [makes] a complete 360 or plows through a lake at the bottom of the drop." As the article goes on, he delves into an analysis of the different levels of sanity and describes two types of insane individuals: the ones sent to the "funny farm" or the asylum, would tend to "carve up women like Jack the Ripper or the Cleveland Torso Murderer", and the other who walk among us just "talk to [themselves]" or "pick [their] nose on the morning bus", ultimately humoring the fact that they inevitably won't be "invited to the best parties". First beginning with day one, for lesson preparation I intended to use the student's lunch to take care of some cutting and distribution of materials. This was my first flaw. Utilizing this time for last minute adjustments and distribution of materials was fine but counting to be able to get the cutting done during this time was an error in judging the time it would take to cut out the word sort I'd intended the students to complete for the vocabulary words. This led to a scramble to get the baggies of cut paper to each student at the opening of the lesson. The definition of work portion went a little different than expected. A 3rd grader's definition of work is very egocentric. They each gave personal definitions of work that involved school, or chores. Ms. Morris interjected that a job might be considered work also to help broaden the student's definition of work. After I gave them the physics definition of work we completed the "jumping Jack" exercise which I believe helped to drive home the concept of what had to happen for our new definition of work to be met. At this time the students were asked to take out their science journals and open the word sort. At this point I played the rollercoaster video stopping it when we came to terms on the word sort. Your brain is programed to protect you from all threats to your body this protection is known as fear. When we touched a hot pan along with burning ourselves now we will not do that repeatedly for fear of being burned. Mr. King states, three claims that we go to horror movies to have fun also we go to feel normal then at last, we go to face our fears but is that genuinely true? For the fun of the massacre, That's a reason we go to horror movies. We go to see the horror scenes that we would think could never happen to us, but you are intrigued to know what they are. In the grim story "little red cap" there is a perfect example of this. In this story was the original story of little red hood where The wolf followed her to her grandmother's house. But rather the little girl going to save her grandmother they both become victims while also being massacred by the wolf. But when you read this you can't help but to laugh in a peculiar sort of way. For that laugh is why we go to have fun. For instance the public lynching you saw someone in agonizing pain, but something about it made you want to go see the lynching over and over. This has to do with Stephen King's theory that we have a little psycho or when he also says "I think we're all mentally ill;" (Stephen King why we crave horror). To say I was shocked would be an understatement and when I first started watching this movie, I didn't know if I could confront this no–no subject. However, after a little soul searching, I realized that society told me as a woman not to talk about porn and so here I am writing a four–page midterm on "Boogie Nights", a film set in the 1970s Fernando Valley. The movie tells the story of a 17–year–old boy's adventure from abusive mother to award winner porn actor and the artistry behind a seemingly dirty subject. "Boogie Nights" was written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, also known for other masterpieces such as "There will be Blood", "Magnolia", and "The Master" (IMDB). The film won several awards which were all too long to list out and it also happens to be the film's 20th birthday. Is there a better way to celebrate than tearing it apart piece by piece for academic purposes? I think not. With the rolling in of the 1970s came a huge expansion of pornography in the United States. The industry went from "an underground cottage to an open, aggressive $2 billion–a–year industry." (Time magazine) The porn industry had a long history of criminal investigation and persecution in previous decades. There are three possible winning scenarios in Baccarat – banker, player, or tie. Players can bet on any of these choices, or any combinations thereof. Cards 2–9 are worth face value, aces just a point, and the tens, jacks, queens, and kings have no value. As cards are added to a hand, any values over ten are automatically discarded. For example, a seven and a nine have a value of 16–10 = 6. Hands can be valued at 0–9 points, and the highest–valued hand indicates the winning outcome. Ties happen when both the banker and the player have the same value in their hands. In order to cash in on this situation, you have to actually place a wager on "tie." We've all known people who talk to themselves, people who sometimes squinch their faces into horrible grimaces when they believe no one is watching, people who have some hysterical fear – of snakes, the dark, the tight place, the long drop . . . and, of course, those final worms and grubs that are waiting so patiently underground. When we pay our four or five bucks and seat ourselves at tenth–row center in a theater showing a horror movie, we are daring the nightmare. Why? Some of the reasons are simple and obvious. To show that we can, that we are not afraid, that we can ride this roller coaster. Which is not to say that a really good horror movie may not surprise a scream out of us at some point, the way we may scream when the roller coaster twists through a complete 360 or plows through a lake at the bottom of the drop. And horror movies, like roller coasters, have always been the special province of the young; by the time one turns 40 or 50, one's appetite for double twists or 360–degree loops may be considerably depleted. We also go to re–establish our feelings of essential normality; the horror movie is innately conservative, even reactionary. The three summer reading books, Jane Eyre, The Great Divorce, and The Importance of Being Earnest, all certainly present some internal conflict within major characters. Through these conflicts, the major characters have to make decisions in the books and these decisions have grand consequences. These decisions teach the readers very valuable moral lessons. (ii) Low unit costs of RCC: The unit cost of low paste mass concrete is favorable; to reduce the heat of hydration a significant portion of cement is usually replaced by locally available pozzolanic materials or fly ash. (iii) Incorporation of spillway into dam body: Due to the slope of the downstream face of 1:0.8 (gravity dams) to 1:0.4 (arch–gravity dams), the spillway can directly be incorporated into the dam body which helps to accommodate large floods and which are in need of large spillways. (iv) Use of shape of conventional dams: Because the stresses in gravity type dams are low, the cross–sections of RCC dams are the same as those of conventional dams. (v)Heat generation: RCC is more favorable while taking into consideration the heat dissipation which always remains a vital issue for mass concreting structures. Because of the above advantages, RCC dams are interesting alternatives to conventional dams in most parts of the world. An example of RCC dam is shown in the Figure–1 built along Santa Cruz River in Argentina popularly known as Puerto Santa Cruz Dam Figure. 1 RCC SANTA CRUZ ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 125. Horror In Stephen King's Why We Crave Horror Movies The first time I watched a horror movie, I was nine years old. While all of my cousins shrieked and closed their eyes, I felt totally engaged. Will we become more violent if we watch these movies? Will we become a gore–loving, emotionally insensitive society? What is it about scary movies that we love so much? It all comes back to the Human Condition. Facing our fears, establishing our sense of normalcy, and experiencing a weird sort of fun are all solid claims that Stephen King states in his essay "Why We Crave Horror Movies." Horror is an opportunity for us humans to face our fears. Reading Stephen King's short story "Strawberry Spring"is a perfect example that we use horror to "show that...we are not afraid" (King, "Why We Crave" 1). We go to prove ourselves as brave. In comparison, watching horror movies is alike "daring the nightmare" (King, "Why We Crave" 1). In this case, the "nightmare" is facing our fears, considering horror films are equivalent to going through a literal nightmare. To point out, the narrator in "Strawberry Spring" is "enchanted by that dark and mist–blown strawberry spring, and by the shadow of violent death that walked through it..." (King, "Strawberry Spring" 1). As a matter of fact, we are all enchanted by the darkness in the story just as the narrator is. Additionally, King describes this process as riding a roller coaster by reason of "a really good horror movie may... surprise a scream out of us... the way we may scream when the roller coaster ... • 129. Relationship Between The Relationship In Pirates Of The... An important relationship that is shown in the visual text Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), directed by Gore Verbinski was between two main characters, Captain Jack Sparrow and Will Turner. Their relationship was one of the most important in the film as it shows us how these two characters have changed their perspectives of the world and most importantly, towards each other. There are several examples of how their relationship changes throughout. At the beginning of the film, Jack considers Will as a lame commoner and Will was quite stereotypical about Jack being a 'pirate'. Their animosity and hatred were quite mutual given their respective backgrounds. As the movie progresses, this relationship is more about one's own benefits. They realise and understand each other's strengths and weaknesses well and use each other selfishly. Towards the end, this selfish attitude matures into friendship. At the beginning of the film, Jack and Will had completely different opinions about each other. Jack Sparrow, a clever, cunning and calculated man saw Will as a lay man and would find it hard to believe that they would become friends. Pirates in those days or even today are considered hard core criminals. Will being raised as a common man, irrespective of his past also think the same. The Black Pearl being at the pinnacle of evilness people consider the pirates on that ship to be the worst of mankind. The slightest hint that Jack Sparrow is associated with the ... • 137. Descriptive Experience "Get up, you are going to be late!" my mom said as I continued to stir in bed. Then it hit me, I was going to be late for my friend's birthday party! Once I had gotten ready, I got in the car and we took off. I was very nervous because I knew that all my friends wanted to go on the roller coasters with the loops. Little did I know that my gargantuan fear of going upside down on a roller coaster would become an amazing experience I would never forget. After the two and a half hour drive to Great America Amusement Park in Santa Clara, we arrived. The car ride went by way too fast. In my head, I was terrified, but I thought I did a decent job of hiding it. In the car ride we talked, played games, laughed, and listened to music. All of this was so much fun but in the back of my head, I knew that my fate was drawing near. After we parked, we grabbed all of our stuff for the day and went into the park. As soon as we walked into the park, there was the grand gate, where we took a picture. Then we continued to walk towards the map to see which ride we would go on first. The whole group chose Patriot, a short but screaming fast ride with two loops. I was petrified, I definitely did not want to do this, but I mumbled out "ok, let's do it." After that we hustled over to the entrance and walked up the steps. Walking up the steps felt like an eternity. Then we got to the ride, strapped in, and took off... I was the most scared I had ever been, even more scared than the time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 141. Lord Of The Flies By William Golding All of a sudden, a group of children find themselves stranded on an island in the middle of nowhere–pretty scary right? Well this is just what happens in William Golding's Lord of the Flies. This piece of literature is used by the author to describe the very real society of human beings, through the eyes of young, "innocent" children. There is savagery, evil, goodness at heart, and the sense of hope, whether being lost or discovered, in this book. In Lord of the Flies, there are multiple different symbols that Golding uses to show the fall of society. Two of them being the beautiful conch shell, and the hopeful signal fire. These two symbols are brought up throughout the book, however, they don't always bring out the best in the boys living on the island. Throughout Lord of the Flies, it's noticed how the signal fire is used to show the deterioration of the boys' hope in rescue, and overall loss of hope in themselves and each other. One of the main characters, Ralph, sees a ship near the island. He runs up to the top of the mountain where the fire sits and discovers there is no more smoke, so, "Ralph reached down inside him for the worst word he knew. 'They let the bloody fire go out'" (Golding 68). In this scene, Ralph had sent another character, Jack, and some of his buddies to look after the fire for a while. What happens is Jack and his friends run down the mountain to go hunting and they forget about their duty of watching the fire. As Ralph realizes that the boys do ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 145. The Basic Function Of The Hydraulic System As we know that there is increase in population and due to this there is a very high demand of vehicles. As the sales of cars and bikes are increasing there is a shortage of parking spaces. People park their cars on road, which causes very long traffic jams and due to this common man faces a lot of problems. So we came up with what was called "Multilevel Parking". Its sounds pretty cool, but the main problem was how are we going to achieve it? We build track through the building for the vehicles to take them on different parking level, which will cost more and will not be for generations. Another solution was using Hydraulics, motors and electric system to take the cars to different level and it will last much longer. Why to Use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hydraulic lift or Mechanical jack is used to move the vehicle to higher or lower levels of the parking for proper parking. The vehicle can be moved vertically in the parking (up down) and horizontally (left or right) until the car needed again. When the vehicle is required, the process is reversed and the transport car raises the vehicle again to the same area where the driver left. • 149. Le Zets Research Paper Courtesy of Le Zets Courtesy of Le Zets Everything has been done before, and the trick is to craft the sound and present it in a new light. When scrolling through the world of music the genre "garage blues" popped up in association with the band Le Zets. My assumption led to a universal sound of covers and repetitive noises. Never assume. The first time I heard Le Zets, the only thing that came out of my mouth were the words, "holy shit." What started as a duo in Los Angeles, by founder Richard Romero (guitar, vocals), became a trio four years later, when Romero brought on Margo Swann from Phoenix, AZ, to take over lead vocals and keyboards, as producer Bob Hoag, also became the occasional drummer. The chemistry between the two shined on the debut album, Deadweight, released this past June, from Atomic A Go Go Records. From start to finish, there isn't one low point on the album; a consistency of high rollers, crunchy guitars, and catchy riffs that are bound to lift your spirits and lead to a explosive rock concert in your head. While "Favor for a Favor,"seems to be the only track that can truly be shoved into the garage blues genre, the album as a whole is a cross of 70s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
