Descriptive Essay About The Castle
Its a cold Saturday night in October in New York City. Christina had ben fighting with her mom and
step dad all week. No matter what she said, it didn't seem to change their minds. They were being so
unfair. She had finally had enough, so when they had gone to their room, Christina packed a small
bag and left. Having not thought this all the way through, she walked for a while and saw a park in
the distance. It was so dark, except for the street lights in the corners and one small one by the
bathrooms. Huddled up in a stall of the bathrooms she tried to sleep. All the silence was scary. The
wind was slamming the door back and forth and she could hear footsteps. She was a quiet as she
could possible be, hoping that the person, if any, would leave. Panic soon set in, the voices were
right outside the door. Did they know she was there? After hours of sitting there quietly, they finally
left. Christina took this opportunity and ran as fast as she could back home.
Happy place
The long awaited day was finally here, Disney! It seemed like we had been waiting for so long. We
hurried and ate breakfast. The shuttle for the beautiful California hotel was downstairs. The ride
seemed to take forever, beautiful palm tress everywhere. Finally, we were at the entrance. The sheer
sight of the castle was mesmerizing. Rides, games and food everywhere, it was overwhelming.
There was so much to see, what to do first. There was Mickey, Minnie, ooh and Goofy. So many
rides and things to do,

Benefits Of A New Team
When I was in Noida working for Headstrong, my team used to go out for lunch on special
occasions. As that area had quite many options, sometimes we used to be in a fix as to where to go.
Another reason for long decision making was because different people had their own tastes. And,
few of them had even been to places we were zeroing–in on and didn 't want to go again. Now, that
was a mess as it would delay our outings that were supposed to become a lifetime memory for a few
at least! We tried to plan well ahead in advance, but that also had issues as people wanted to delay it
to the last minute.
We primarily relied on word–of–mouth recommendations and what we as a team preferred the most.
All in all, it used to go just fine most of the times. However, i remember one incident when one of
our new team members strongly recommended a restaurant to which his family were regular visitors
for many years. He was giving mouthwatering description of the dishes available there and most of
us melted like butter on a parantha and were looking forward to go there. Come the D–day, being a
foodie, i was especially charged up; but there was one delay after another as few of the folks were
held up in meetings. It was way past my usual lunch time and finally, we went ahead around quarter
to 3. We were all very hungry but to our utter disappointment we found the place closed.
The colleague who had recommended us looked pretty sad and asked nearby shops if the restaurant
had closed for good.

Nickle and Dimed: Trading Places Essay
For Barbara Ehrenreich's book Nickel and Dimed to be effective, she has to utilize imagery, an
extremely effective method of description. By her very detailed descriptions, Ehrenreich is able to
"paint a picture" of what it was like for her to go through her yearlong adventure. She incorporates
imagery often, making the reader feel like they are actually in the story, feeling what she felt, seeing
what she saw, and going through what she went through. For example when Ehrenreich describes
her room at the Clearview Inn, " Room 133 contains a bed, a chair, a chest of drawers, and a TV
fastened to the wall. I plead for and get a lamp to complement the single overhead bulb. Instead of
the mold smell, I now breathe a mixture of fresh paint and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This leads the reader to assume that this story is not at all fiction, however based exactly on what
she went through. When the reader assumes this, the book takes on a realistic quality, helping the
reader relate it to his or her own life. This method of realism is quite effective throughout the book,
when the name Wal–Mart comes up in the story, it brings the reader into the story as that name is
popular nationwide, and because it is real. After all, who has not been to Wal–Mart? When asked on
the first day of class to prove the statement "experience is the best teacher" wrong, I had trouble
doing so. Throughout my life, I have learned more from making mistakes, than I have just assuming
what is wrong and right. My experience as a goaltender for hockey, has everything to do with
learning from your mistakes, but being the person I am, I will take the risks or chances, and learn
from them. I am not lethargic enough to sit and listen to other people tell me what to do, I have to go
out and try it for myself. So, I believe that Ehrenreich's project was a great idea, however for the
wrong cause. Instead of just wanting to know what it would be like to not have everything, she just
seemed to want publicity. By writing this story she could have put more effort into explaining the
conditions these people worked in, and how they lived. She could have given personality traits, told
whether or not they were depressed, and so on. She never seemed to put her heart into her

In Vincent O’Sullivan’S Finding The Pattern, Solving The
In Vincent O'Sullivan's Finding the Pattern, Solving the Problem: Katherine Mansfield The New
Zealand European, it is noted that Katherine Mansfield 'was an enthusiast for the cinema', that 'she
acted in several movies' and that 'her letters frequently took up such images as the months that
"stream by like a movie picture"'(18). Furthermore, her short story At the Bay begins with the line
'Very early morning'(Mansfield 5), that when interpreted from a literary standpoint, is more suited to
a screenplay direction than the opening of a narrative. From studying At the Bay, alongside The
Garden Party and Miss Brill, it is evident that her love of cinema influences her own writing, to the
point where techniques that are prominently filmic, such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The 'big bush–covered hills'(Mansfield 1) and 'sandy road with shallow puddles(2) of the opening
are made evident that they're not situated by the 'weed–hung rocks' and 'small rock pools'(20) of a
later section, yet the consistency of the style in which each area is described, the narrative voice
wandering from components of the setting, such as the 'tide' to the 'sunlight' (20) to the 'green
binds...in the bungalows'(21) and the 'pawa shells'(21), not unlike a montage, unite the set of
surroundings by replicating the manner in which they are portrayed.
This parallels Citizen Kane's 'News of the World' sequence, a montage that uses accurate renditions
of a series of news segments, where newspapers and footage are both crafted to look as authentic
and possible, to create a realistic depiction of media coverage that encompasses the globe through
the different languages printed on certain newspapers. This of course brings different places together
to add to the legibility of the scene and thus its overall realism. Much like Mansfield, Welles uses
the idea of consistency and replication in his montage as a way of uniting it to the real world.
Yet this montage sequence in Citizen Kane fulfills another purpose. This scene takes place directly
after Kane's death, a sombre, moving moment. By directly contrasting that moment with a

The Geranium And The Short Story
Flannery O'Connor's The Geranium and A Good Man is Hard to Find:
Imagery in Flashbacks and Memories
Many of Flannery O'Connor's short stories take place over the course of one day. The length of her
scenes, the description in which she fills them and her pristine use of dialogue makes her
protagonists well developed. They do not feel like characters we have just met, but ones we have
always known, making the stories feel longer than a day's time, too. In studying a few O'Connor
stories there is another common element of craft she uses in order for us to understand and know her
characters better, given the handful of pages that make up her short stories. That is her use of
flashback and character memory. The first story in Flannery O'Connor's The Complete Stories is The
Geranium. Here, we spend a day with Old Dudley, a racist man from the south who has since moved
in with his daughter in a tiny New York City apartment. O'Connor's mastery becomes alive
automatically. Flannery provides us with flashbacks though Old Dudley's mind. This helps us to
literally see him better, for the flashbacks contain short, but vivid imagery, showing us another side
of Dudley and the other life he used to live. The same can be said about the nameless grandmother
in A Good Man in Hard to Find. While the protagonist here is slightly more personable, she has a
similar mindset as Old Dudley: her ways and ideals are stuck in the past. We are given similar
glimpses into this past life through the

The Classroom Is A Critical Locus For Student...
"The classroom is a critical locus for student interpersonal and educational development" (Hudgins
et al, 37, 1994). When a student walks into a classroom their first impression is the physical
classroom environment. A student either sees the classroom as a positive place to learn or a negative
space they are forced to attend every day. Research has shown that students subject matter,
achievement and attitudes improve when the teacher creates a physical classroom environment that
is more conducive to learning. (Hudgins et al, 37, 1994). "Well–run classrooms begin with the
room's physical layout" (Shalaway). First things first, a classroom 's physical layout should reflect
the teaching style of the teacher. As a future teacher, the style of teaching that I value the most is
partner collaboration. I find that students learn to the best of their ability when they can bounce
ideas off each other and corporate in table groups. In the center of my classroom, I have placed my
student's tables with a group of chairs around the table. This will give my students the opportunity to
work and collaborate with each other. I have also made sure that students tables are far enough apart
so that there is an aisle big enough for students and disabled students to get up and down the aisle
easily. In front of the tables, I have placed a mini lesson rug by the smart board. The mini lesson rug
will act as an extra place for mini lessons and further needed instruction/practice for

Theories Of Trading Places
Sociological three paradigms, Symbolic Interactionism, Social conflict, and Structural functionalism
are all evident in everyday life. These three theories are associated with the study of societies. Each
of these three theories were shown in the movie, Trading Places, a american comedy made in 1983
that illustrates the advantages of different social classes by making a banker and a homeless person
trade places. Before I start to analyse the movie to each theory, I will first start by explaining each
theory for a definition and to have a better understanding. Symbolic interactionism is a theory is
defined as, "a theoretical perspective in which society is viewed as composed of symbols that people

Merton is saying about the theory that there's aspects of society that are adaptive. For example, Back
then woman used to be in charge of all of the household task. While the men go out and work. This
was adapted from there time and how they seen the aspects of society. Society is always adapted and
usually are passed to other generations. In the movie Trading Places, It's full of scenes that act out
each theory. The movie is a comedy, but is also known for a deeper analysis that shows its focal
point is on sociological concepts. The social conflict theory stretches throughout the movie. A scene
that best illistrastrated this theory was present in the beginning of the movie. In this scene the
homeless man named billy bumped into louis, a high class banker. Louis briefcase then fell out of
his hand, and automatically assumes he's being robbed by the homeless man. Louis then calls the
police. Police then goes on to chase Billy and he soon gets caught. Due to the event, brothers begin
to argue that billy is not a bad person but only ats as so because of his social class. They also went
on to say if Louis was in Billy's shoes he would act in thee same manner. The brothers feel that Billy
only seems bad by nature. The social conflict theory ties in with this scene as Billy being homeless
made him seen as a person whos in need and is willing to risk trying to steal in order

Personal Narrative Analysis
Think about your favorite place, everyone has one. Whether it's sitting in your bedroom covered in
blankets, in the woods on a hike, or with all your friends at a party, everyone has a place that they go
whenever the opportunity presents itself. For me, now, it's downtown Chicago. If you would've
asked me that question a few years ago, it would've probably been somewhere close to home. That
was before I realized how much I loved traveling, and how much I loved being places that were
different from what I was used to. But if I wouldn't have traveled like I have, I would've never
known.
When I was in fourth grade I went on my first big vacation that I have memory of, and that was to
Mexico. Since then I have traveled to New York City, Washington

someone repeated the process we used in class. Include at least 10 marble rolls. Make sure that there
would enough evidence to estimate the size, shape, and location of the object. Explain your rationale
in between 5–7 sentences. Based on the path of the marbles in the diagram, there is enough evidence
to estimate the size of the shape, based on where the marble bounces off of the shape and where the
marble rolls past the shape. You can also use this method to determine the approximate location of
the shape. In the diagram that I drew, you would be able to determine that the shape isn't located
towards the top or bottom of the cardboard and that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In what ways did this activity represent a model for Rutherford's efforts to determine the structure of
the atom? What type of thinking and evidence (direct or indirect) were necessary in order to draw
conclusions in both situations? This activity is a model for Rutherford's experiments to determine
the structure of the atom because in the activity, we rolled a marble towards a shape that we could
not see in order to determine its size, shape, and location, just as Rutherford observed how particles
bounced off of or went through a sheet of gold foil, in order to determine the size, shape, and
properties of atoms. We used the angles at which the marble bounced off of the shape in order to
determine the properties of that shape in our activity, and in Rutherford's experiments, he observed
how the particles bounced off of or went through the gold foil, in order to determine the atom's
properties. Also, we used a piece of cardboard to cover our target because Rutherford was not able
to see the atoms that he was studying. In order to draw conclusions in both situations, you need to
determine what makes the marble or particle roll or travel the way it does. For example, in the
experiments, if the particle went straight through the gold leaf and in our activity, if the marble rolls
straight through the cardboard, you can infer that the particles and the marble didn't hit the target.
However, if the marble or particle bounced off of the target at an angle, you need to be able to use
those angles to determine what shape and size the target is and where it is

What Are Pool Pockets
Pool Pockets For this problem we were given a modified pool table, in which there are only corner
pockets, no side pockets. We imagine there is a ball starting in the bottom left corner and shooting at
a 45 degree angle and bouncing off the side of the table until it rolls into a hole. The question that I
am trying to answer however is if I can predict how many times the ball will hit a wall before
landing in a pocket and also which pocket it will land in. During this problem a learned many
different things like where the ball would roll and how many rebounds it would take to roll in a
pocket for any given dimension of pool table. I did not however come up with a super formula for
the problem but a did find some pretty interesting rules. One

Reflective Essay On Piano Music
I absolutely despise competitions of any kind. Really, the only competitions I compete in happen to
be for piano. For six years now, I have been taking piano lessons. I possess my fair share of
performances. One festival I have attended several times is the Sonatina Festival. Sonatina Festival is
not a normal common festival, it is a competition for first, second, and third place. The festival
contains the categories of beginner, intermediate, late intermediate, and advanced. Taking place
every February or March, Sonatina Festival comes to life.
At the age of 12 or 13, I walked through the doors of the church the festival occupied for the second
time in my life. Spending the past 5 months learning and memorizing a song was unquestionably
going to pay off. That first place under the intermediate title was mine. Confidence clouded my
mind when I walked through the doors to play my piece. The quiet room was occupied by the piano,
the judge, and me.
Nerves started kicking in, strong. My hands started shaking, my stomach was doing flips I was
playing the most unfavorable thoughts of failure in my mind. Before I knew it, my performance was
over. Personally, I thought I played my piece considerably well, but definitely not first place worthy.
Walking out of the room, I was congratulated by my mother, along with my piano teacher. Marching
out of the church that the festival was held in, a wave of relief washed over me knowing my
performance was over.

The Physical Importance Of Outdoor Recreation
Outdoor recreation, but more specifically a place attachment that can be associated with outdoor
recreation, has had a huge impact on my life. Throughout my childhood, my family and I would
constantly travel to many outdoor recreation locations including Myrtle Beach, Pinery Provincial
Park, and St. Jacobs Farmers' Market. These places hold special meaning and an emotional bond for
me, because I associate them with youthfulness and happiness. While everybody views place
differently, people form emotional attachments and beliefs of these places based on different
specifications. According to Williams and Stewart (1998), individuals may feel a special connection
to a place based on its social or personal history, scenic beauty, or spiritual meaning (p. 22). To truly
understand the meaning of place and the importance of outdoor recreation, I recently took part in
four separate experiential activities at St. Jacobs Farmers' Market in Waterloo, Ontario. After
partaking in four outdoor experiential episodes at St. Jacobs Farmers' Market, I decided to create a
time capsule of my experience for people to open fifty years from now. The time capsule included
post cards, photos of my experience, and a few physical components that I found represented the
market well and represented the importance of outdoor–recreation. One of the physical components
was a maple sugar candy to represent how maple was an important staple to Canadians, and how
procuring maple syrup is an activity that can

Yes! These are bed bugs and they are what people have been combating to get rid of them for years.
They're the most devilish and vulnerable creatures caused itching and biting leaving red spot, skin
bumps and welts on victim's skin. It is the most disgusting thing to look at. Besides these apparent

My individual record was also undefeated as well and it was strenuous, to say the least but also
rewarding. Day two we knew was going to be the toughest competition and most stressful. It's that
day that by the end, you know basically what you are competing for. Whether it is for the
championship title or to place overall top ten. All other competition gets done by the end of the
second day and for that to happen means a profusion of matches. The first match of the day was
against a very skillful Alabama team, we won respectfully and geared up for our next match. Giving
it all I had was not enough nor was the whole team's full effort enough to defeat the notorious club
team from New York. The loss was not taken lightly so we moved on knowing we needed to get two
consecutive wins in order to make it in the top 10. At this point in time, I was very anxious to see
how strong our team really is because I really thought we had more in us than what we put out on
the mat the last match. My record was now 4–1 which was looking very impressive. Moving into
our next match I had opened up the first match knowing it was important and I set the tone of the
match I would say with a huge win over a multiple time state champion from the Florida team. My
team won that match, meaning that we were going up against the returning champion team called

body going at one time. The match really came down to the final bouts of the match, making it a
very grueling match to be a part of because all that was on my mind was the fact that with a huge
win here means we sealed the deal the place top ten at the least! I and most of the team picked up
very courageous wins over our opponents bringing us to victory in the end of that match. Sleeping

Explore How Perceptions of Belonging or Not Belonging Are...
A connection to a physical location may present us with the perception that we either belong or not
belong however, it is the connections that we form with people in places, memories of previous
places and ones response to experiences within places that heightens ones sense of belonging or
alienation. The concept of belonging through connections with people, experiences and memories in
certain places is explored in the texts Romulus my Father a memoir by Raimond Gaita and Oranges

Raimond also justifies his mother's affair with Mitru when he describes his mother as "a troubled
girl from central Europe who could not settle in the dilapidated landscape that heightened her
isolation". The complexity of the bond is developed through Anna's first attempt at suicide, which is
more of a desperate cry for help; "In words that were barely comprehensible she said that she loved
me and wanted to say goodbye, that she would fall asleep and then die". This vivid memory of his
mother saying goodbye leads to a very complex bond between the pair. Perhaps the most intense
memory of his mother that Gaita has is the memory of his mother returning from hospital after this
suicide attempt, "alone, small, frail, walking with an uncertain gait and a distracted air. In the vast
landscape with only crude wire fences and a rough track to mark an human impression on it she
appeared forsaken. She looked at me as though she had returned from the dead, unsure about the
value of her achievement". The memory is bittersweet, although she is alive after a failed suicide
attempt; she conveys a vivid impression of someone who does not belong in the place they are in
and does not seem to belong in that life. Raymond's memories of experiences at Frogmore,
especially experiences with regards to his mother, has shaped and built his connection with

Corruption And City Problems In The Twentieth Century
In the early to mid–twentieth century there was a lot of corruption and city problems as these new
cities were being built. Since most cities were built so fast there was bad housing which lead to
diseases spreading very rapidly, and there was horrible working conditions. Many of these cities
were dangers for the people that lived there. Diseases started to spread very rapidly in this period of
time. Different social groups later into the twentieth century would try and stop them. Some of these
groups would succeed in their attempts to make their–homes and work places better
Do to rapid growth of cities problems started to arise for both people and animals. Immigrants
coming into the cities were bringing all types of animals. They would let their animals walk around
the cities. Since both cars and animals occupied the streets things began to became over crowded. In
Brooklyn there were about 26,000 horses each producing 20 lbs. of manure and several gallons of
urine each day. When a horse or any other animal would die people sometimes left the bodies in the
streets. the streets where piled high with garbage since there was not a waste system in place. At
some points people could not get to the streets to get to their cars. Tenement life was pretty bad.
Most of the apartment buildings being built had no to little ventilation. Most of the time more than
one family would be placed in each apartment. Since there were hardly any ventilation diseases

A Person 's Environment Is The Same Opportunity At The End...
Every person struggle is different. Some have worked sweat and tears for their achievements while
others have had things just handed to them and do not really know the struggle of hard work. Some
people work as hard as they can and at the end of the day, they still cannot seem to succeed, as they
would like to. They can work hard, live a good legal life, and yet still cannot make ends meet at the
end of the day. The film "Trading places," and the Not everybody in America has the same
opportunity to be successful because one person's environment may be much rougher than another
person environment. A person's environment is a key factor in their success. A person born into
poverty is going to have a much harder time to get ahead than a person that is born into a wealthy
family or environment. It is as if they are already in a negative situation before they even have a
chance to begin life. A person born into poverty doesn't have that extra time to do homework at
home because they might have to be home taking care of other siblings while guardians are at work.
Sometimes they might not even be at home babysitting; they might have to get a job themselves
because the money situation is so tight at home. While a person born to a wealthier family has that
extra time to study, that person has the extra time to participate in extracurricular activities that
might be a key to success. They do not have to worry about little things, which allow them to
concentrate all of their time,

Examples Of Self-Regulating Streets
Self–Regulating Streets
Self–Regulating Streets
1. Explain what is meant by this expression in terms of place–making and urban design.
Self–regulating streets are streets where urban design, function, place, landscaping, engineering and
urban design can all be implemented to regulate the speed of vehicles.
Place–making involves the implementation of a vision to improve a few major aspects to ensure the
success of urban places, including streets. These three aspects include quality public realm, way
finding and legibility and sense of place which, among others, go a long way in ensuring the
sustainability of self–regulating streets.
Sense of place can be explained as the individual's personal perception of a given street. On the

Give examples of where and how you think the principle has been successfully implemented.
The first example of a place where self–regulating streets have been implemented is in Ireland most
specifically the seaside town of Youghal in County Cork. This was the first region to identify the
existing link between driver behavior and street environment back in 1995. This principle of self–
regulating streets was successfully implemented using narrow streets and having parking spaces
along the streets so as to reduce traffic congestion. In light traffic conditions, this design has proven
to be very effective.
Dorset Street in the northern part of Dublin also serves as a self–regulating street. Due to its heavy
traffic, Dorset Street successfully implemented this principle using a boulevard type of
configuration. Trees were placed along the street to provide an enclosure.
Both of these examples were successfully implemented as a result of the designers carrying out
vigorous analysis to come up with an optimum design and intervention tailored to each place, so as
to fully solve the issue of motorist behavior and speed (Lahart et al., 2013,

The beautiful rare Daintree Rainforest land stretches out into a dense rainforest, that lays on lowland

The rare Daintree Rainforest is one of the forest that has been demolishing slowly because of
logging. With this ecosystem fragmentation is occurring ("All about carbon dioxide"). Ecosystem
fragmentation is where the forest is separated into smaller pieces over time because of human
activity ("The Daintree Rainforest Australia"). With this happening, animals habitats are becoming
even smaller ("All about carbon dioxide"). With more habitat space becoming less it is causing more
animals to become threatened and an endangered species ("Deforestation"). Smaller amount of
habitat is also affecting the animals migration patterns, their ability to collect food, and provides less
shelter ("All about carbon dioxide"). This fragmentation also makes it a struggle for animals to
move from one part of the rainforest to another and it also affects the limit it has on the animals
breeding population. The ecosystem fragmentation is making them become more vulnerable to
extinction ("Population in Daintree"). Logging is cutting down one and one–half acres of trees each
second and eighteen million acres of forest are destroyed each year. It is estimated that in over the
next quarter of a century up to twenty–eight thousand animal species may become extinct all
because of logging and human damned for lumber ("All about carbon

Advantages Of Keeping Opossums Away
Opossum Prevention Tips: How to Keep Opossums Away
Possums are generally non–aggressive creatures, but capable of creating unsanitary environments.
They may even turn violent when diseased! There exists several methods to keep them away and
this involves simply making the setting less attractive. You could also put traps to imprison possums
to be able to physically get rid of them.
Here is what you must know concerning keeping opossums away. Opossums, as a general rule, stay
among the unmistakable North America animals just as they remain the lone marsupial living on the
continent. While they were native solely to the southern part of America before, they now are an
everyday sight right through the Southern and Eastern states of America. ... Show more content on

Do not allow your cat or dog, however, to roam freely through the backyard for this purpose. They
can end up fighting with violent possums and other daring animals if you do so. Instead, collect hair
or fur after grooming your pet and place the collected hair inside small net bags. Then, hang these
bags or directly scatter the hair around sections where possums are frequently seen.
3. Spread anything with a potent smell
Mothballs, garlic and ammonia have scents that these animals tend to run away from. So, pour a bit
of ammonia inside a coffee tin with a cover and place a cloth inside. Then, bring an end of the cloth
up an opening cut in the cover. The cloth will function by way of a wick in dispersing the odor.
Place a container in each area where the possums meet. You may also scatter mothballs surrounding
areas where you noticed activities of possums. You could enclose the mothballs inside a netting bag
as an alternative to scattering them individually all over the place.
As for garlic, place a piece of mashed garlic inside any vicinity that you wish your neighborhood
animals to keep away from. Crushing garlic stays better than using whole ones since mashing

The House on Mango Street
The short story by Sandra Cisneros revolves truly around the tittle "The House on Mango Street"
and how her family moved from places to places to get there. The recollection of the street names
her family lived on and how every time they moved "there'd be one more of us" added to the authors
focus of emphasizing how important the word "home" meant to her throughout the story. The family
of six included Mama, Papa, brothers Carlos and Kiki, and sister Nenny. According to the author's
memory, she had lived on Loomis, Keeler and Paulina. "We don't have to pay rent to anybody, or
share the yard with the people, downstairs, or be careful not to make too much noise, and there isn't
a landlord banging on the ceiling with a broom." The authors ... Show more content on

The author had high expectation for this house, but fails to realize that her family was constantly
moving from one poor district of Chicago to another. The addition of a family member every time
they moved didn't help their economic status either due to the increase in budget when you have one
more child to take care of. The major themes of the short story were home, family, poverty and self–
identity. Cisneros need for a home is much related to her economic situation, her dreams and
frustrations towards her family. Someone to blame for this would be Mama and Papa that keep
forming this image of the perfect house in the authors mind. "This was the house Papa talked about
when he held a lottery ticket and this was the house Mama dreamed up in the stories she told us
before we went to bed." The severity of her disappointment and the shame is demonstrated when she
describes the house on Mango Street. "Where do you live? she asked. There, I said pointing up to
the third floor. You live there? There... I lived there. I nodded." The exchange of question and
answer between the nun and the author created a tome of tension to the dialogue. The italicizing of
text tied into the theme of home and the verbal beating tolerated by the author. The short story ends
with "I knew then I had to have a house. A real house. One I could point to. But this isn't it...For the
time being, Mama says. Temporary, says Papa, But I know how those things go." This statement by
Cisneros is

Essay on Sula
Things can happen in some places and the tale of them will be interesting. The same story laid in
another city would be ridiculous. Setting situates the story`s events, characters and mood through
place, time and weather. Without the different dimensions of setting, a story would not have the
diversity to introduce new or changed characters, define their true identities, compare societies and
reveal hidden emotions. Through Morrison`s Sula, setting is used as the key factor behind every
event that occurred.
In order to introduce a changed character back to a story the author must first present the character
to a new different environment. In Morrison`s novel we see that Shadrack, Plum and Sula go away
from the Bottom and return completely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When characters are placed in different situations, they tend to reveal their true identities. In most
cases setting is used to identify a characters true characteristics or intentions. The purpose of this is
to entertain the plot of the story. As the story moves on, characters are not necessarily changed but
more over presented in different characteristics that the reader had not seen them in before. "Helene
Wright was an impressive woman, at least in Medallion she was." (Morrison, 11) Respected by
many in Medallion because of her physique, when presented in a new setting, Helene was stripped
away by one word, "gal." A simple change of place, proved that Helene was not different than the
other women in Medallion. The highly admired woman was now lowering herself from the "lady"
image she had obtained by being coquette to a white conductor.
Writers use setting to reveal the hidden emotions of characters. Characters react differently when
placed in particular environments. Morrison used this technique, when in a single chapter she
portrayed Sula in two distinct moods. In chapter 1922, Sula is introduced as upfront and tough when
"she slashed off only the tip of her finger" (Morrison, 54) to intimidate her bullies. A young girl who
is not terrified, "if I can do that to myself, what you suppose ill do to you?" (Morrison, 55) is later
on placed in an environment of comfort and viewed as

Tiny Homes Advantages And Disadvantages
A Tiny Home is a house which is less than 300–400 square feet in size. Most of the Tiny Homes are
only 200 square feet and they serve the purpose of providing comfort and safety quite well. This is
the planning stage, when you must think of every significant thing or you might spend massive
amounts of time rethinking your decisions.
The idea is to think tiny. When you begin, you must understand what you need to carry out and to do
that, you must know why Tiny Homes are so good for you. It helps you to plan your Tiny Home and
make a list of things you want to do in it and the kind of items that are indispensable to your
lifestyle.
The main things that you should think about are the advantages, the utility aspect, expenses, and
having your own solar panel grid for power for your house. The advantages are self–explanatory.
The utility factor includes simplicity, expense and minimalistic living. The solar power grid will
need some figuring out from your side. You can read about how to make calculations in the coming
chapters. Using solar power will cut costs and give you the mobility you need.
Advantages of a Tiny Home
● First, there is no wastage of space. Everything is within reach.
● Next, you do not spend much, either on the building or for maintaining the Tiny Home.
● When you begin to think small, your cost comes down.
● The Tiny Homes are environmentally friendly since you will naturally produce less waste.
● Life becomes simpler. o You cannot hang on to your shoe

A Different History and Where I Come from Essay
Elizabeth Brewster and Sujata Bhatt both suggest the significance of place in helping to shape a
person's identity in their poems but they do it in different ways.
Brewster suggests that places change our identity when she writes "People are made of places". This
shows that every different place we visit we take the memories and experiences that we had there
and keep them in our minds and hearts forever. Whereas Bhatt suggests that when we go to a new
place we forget who we previously were and change ourselves so that we fit in with the new culture
that we are living in. We know this from when she says "And how does it happen/ that after the
torture". This shows the struggle to keep your cultural heritage when you move places.
In "A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In "Where I Come From" Brewster uses the metaphor "ice and the breaking of ice". This is to show
that even though you are in a different place than you are used to you are ready to break the ice
when meeting new people and having new experiences. Bhatt suggests that you bring the
conventions to the country you move to from your old country and then you add to them from the
things you learn in the new culture that you are living in. We know this because she says "Great Pan
is not dead". This also shows that your cultural heritage will never die as it will always be a part of
you whether it's obvious or not.
Elizabeth Brewster suggests that places change our identities when she says "nature tidily plotted in
little squares". This gives us the impression that everyone in the city is the same and they are all neat
and tidy busybodies. This differs from what Bhatt suggests when she says "Here, the gods roam
freely, / disguised as snakes or monkeys". This shows that in India you can be whoever or whatever
you want without being judged by anyone and you can be unique.
However "A Different History" is similar to what Brewster is suggesting as Bhatt writes "every tree
is sacred". This shows that everything and everyone is equal and has the same rights as each other.
Brewster shows that in her homeland everything is different because there are, "battered

My Experience : My Personal Experience In High School
My junior year was the third and final year that I was enrolled in the business academy at my high
school. Being in the business academy was just a sophisticated way of saying that I was taking an
online business course through a local community college. It also meant that I was automatically a
part of a career and technical student organization called Business Professionals of America. For the
three previous years, I had participated in the Regional BPA Competition, however, I fell short one
place of qualifying for the State Competition each year. By the time the winter of my junior year
came around, I became determined to finally qualify for State. Placing first or second at State would
enable me to attend Nationals which was held in Orlando. Nevertheless, my ultimate goal was to
compete at the State level. I studied and practiced more than I ever had in the past. I rummaged
through an abundance of resources and asked my business teacher a plethora of questions to ensure
that I understood the material well. When the time had come in February, I worked on my contest
diligently and I revised it multiple times before submitting it. I was sanguine about my final product,
but I also didn't want to get my hopes up too much in case the outcome was not what I was wishing
for.
On a chilly February morning, the business academy students, including myself, boarded a school
bus headed for Greenville High School for the Regional BPAAwards Ceremony. Sitting in the very
back row of the auditorium, I waited anxiously for my contest to be announced. After what felt like
a lifetime, I spotted my name projected onto the big screen which indicated that I had made it into
the top five, and it was time for me to report to the stage. As the bright warm lights hit my face, I
hoped that the crowd wouldn't be able to see my shaking knees. Starting with sixth place, the
announcer called out what place each contestant came in. Finally it was down to second and first
place and my name had not yet been called. I was overwhelmed with relief knowing that no matter
what place I came in at that point, I had qualified for State. I ended up placing first and my teacher

I Liked More Was The One From Gretel Ehrlich
The essay I liked more was the one from Gretel Ehrlich I liked this essay because when she was
telling her story she was focusing on only one place. This essay was very different than Annie
Dillard I say this because when Annie was talking she didn't focus on only one place in her essay
she was focusing on many different places. I personally think that the essay from Gretel Ehrich was
the best. Why I think is the best is because when I was reading it I felt like I can picture what she
was talking about in my head. As I was readying this essay I felt like I can place myself in the place
she was describing for example when she was taking about being at the farm and other things she
made reference too. This essay was just really calm, essay to fallow, it was clear, and as I as
readying it I felt like I was connected to it. this is why I liked this essay more than the one from
Annie Dillard when I was readying the essay from Annie I just could focus on what she was talking
about because she would take her story to multiple places. She would be talking about one thing and
then she would all the sudden change it and this is what I didn't like about her essay because it was
just really hard to fallow with all the multiple places she was referring too. Another thing I think like
about it I that when it was telling her story she would repeat herself. This is what made it hard for
me to understand, it's just crazy and goes on and on. This is why I choose the essay from Gretel.

A primer, or undercoat, is a base layer of paint that goes on a wall before the actual color of paint. A

that dark red wall as a speech, or piece of writing. Those first pages will need renovation after

Place Symbolism And Land Politics In Beowulf
Stuart Elden, in his article "Place Symbolism and Land Politics in Beowulf", discusses the usage of
place in Beowulf. He declares, "In this text, site and place are given a range of symbolic, material,
and emotive resonances." There are copious examples in Beowulf where place has significant
meaning. Settings are presented as either good or bad, boundaries are set and crossed, and the
placement of boundaries created conflict and exclusion.
In Beowulf, there are many places that are clearly presented as good and bad, safe and unsafe. In the
text, the reader learns about places that have a somewhat concrete goodness or turmoil present.
Heorot Hall described in the beginning of Beowulf is one of the good places. Of the hall, it is
written, "Soon it stood there, finished and ready, in full view, the hall of halls". The hall is
representative of the community and the identity of the realm, as well as serving as a gathering place
for the people to drink and socialize. Elden describes the hall as a place of great joy and celebration,
as well as a sacred place for various ceremonies and rituals to take place (cite this and make sure
proper paraphrasing). These descriptions create a sense of community and safety in the hall. In
contrast, there are many places, such as Grendel's mere or the dragon's lair, that are presented in a
much darker, evil light creating a bad place. The mere is described with a level of ambiguity that
creates a sense of unsettlement and eeriness in the reader.

Literary Analysis Of 'The Haunted Boy'
Literary Analysis– The Haunted Boy
The setting is used by the author in stories to display the mood of the scene. Specific details bring up
certain moods for the characters and the reader. For example, when talking about a warm, sunny
day, the reader can infer that the scene is going to be happy and there is going to be no misfortunate
event that happens. Carson Smith McCullers uses the setting in her short story "The Haunted Boy"
to display the different moods of the main character Hugh. The settings in the story help show how
uncomfortable Hugh is in the house after a past experience and shows how happy he is outside when
he remembers happy memories.
The beginning of the story starts out with one of few happy settings. The front yard was one of the
only places that brought happy feelings to the story. McCullers' short story starts out by describing
the day having sunshine on a mid–April afternoon and the front lawn being green (page 675). These
descriptions allow the reader to think warm and colorful thoughts. The story then goes to talk about
how the boys are running outside in the warm. "Hugh race up the sidewalk, and John followed him.
They finished the front steps with two bounds, and the door slammed after them" (page 675). This
shows how the boys are having fun and enjoying each others company. Finally, the front yard is the
place that Hugh remembers some of his fond memories of his mother. "Sometimes she would be out
fooling with the border of spring flowers– the candytuft, the sweet William, the lobelias (she had
taught him the names)..." (page 675). From this explanation, the reader can relate to the character
thinking about different memories that they may have that bring happy thoughts to mind.
One of the only places in the house that brought a comfortable feeling to Hugh was the kitchen. The
kitchen is described as bright and clean and the best room in the house (page 676). In the kitchen,
there are fresh towels and clean dishes. This statement gives you the feeling that everything is going
well in the house and there is nothing wrong. The kitchen is also the only place in the house that
made Hugh feel comfortable and safe (Page 677), except on this particular day when there was no

The Transformation
Anywhere you go can create memories, but can also become a part of you in one way or another.
Some of those places may have had an impact on a person's life that changed him or her as a person.
For others, some places may have a special meaning, teaching, or maybe because the best memories
were made in that special place. For me, the best memories and the one place that I always
remember is Woodburn Oregon. This city has so many good, happy, and bad memories that I still

Comparing Home in Richard Ford's I Must Be Going and...
Comparing Home in Richard Ford's I Must Be Going and Scott Sander's Homeplace
Most people define home as a comfortable setting which provides love and warmth. In Scott
Sanders "Homeplace" and Richard Ford's "I Must Be Going" the concept of home is defined in two
different ways. Sanders believes that by moving from place to place, the meaning of home has been
diminished. Sanders believes that America's culture "nudges everyone into motion" (Sanders 103)
and that his "longing to become an inhabitant rather than a drifter" (103) is what sets him apart from
everyone else. Ford prefers to stay on the move. His argument is life's too short to settle in one
place. He believes home is where you make it, but permanence is not a ... Show more content on

Sanders has a different opinion of moving just to see other places. Sanders believes that in order to
know a place one must "root" themselves into it. Sanders proposes that "if you are not yourself
placed, then you wander the world like a sightseer, a collector of sensations, with no gauge for
measuring what you see" (103). Ford has a different feeling. He believes that seeing all of these
places creates memory, and imagination of these other places just provides an illusion of what is
really going on in the world. He says, "Memory always needs replenishing, and anyway you
misunderstand imagination and how it thrives in us by extending partial knowledge to complete any
illusion of reality" (Ford 110). Sanders would disagree that home is not a place. He starts out his
essay with a story of a family whose house is destroyed by a tornado three times. Each time they
rebuild in the same spot. Sanders admires this family for their commitment to their home. Sanders
believes length of time in an area has a definite effect on someone's meaning for that place. Sanders
is encouraged by the words of Gary Snyder in The Practice of the Wild: "You know, I think if people
stay somewhere long enough, the spirits will begin to speak to them" (104). Ford does not believe in
commitment to a place. He quotes Ralph Emerson saying, "We live amid surfaces, and the true art of
life is to skate well on them" (Ford

Descriptive Essay About The Castle

  • 1. Descriptive Essay About The Castle Its a cold Saturday night in October in New York City. Christina had ben fighting with her mom and step dad all week. No matter what she said, it didn't seem to change their minds. They were being so unfair. She had finally had enough, so when they had gone to their room, Christina packed a small bag and left. Having not thought this all the way through, she walked for a while and saw a park in the distance. It was so dark, except for the street lights in the corners and one small one by the bathrooms. Huddled up in a stall of the bathrooms she tried to sleep. All the silence was scary. The wind was slamming the door back and forth and she could hear footsteps. She was a quiet as she could possible be, hoping that the person, if any, would leave. Panic soon set in, the voices were right outside the door. Did they know she was there? After hours of sitting there quietly, they finally left. Christina took this opportunity and ran as fast as she could back home. Happy place The long awaited day was finally here, Disney! It seemed like we had been waiting for so long. We hurried and ate breakfast. The shuttle for the beautiful California hotel was downstairs. The ride seemed to take forever, beautiful palm tress everywhere. Finally, we were at the entrance. The sheer sight of the castle was mesmerizing. Rides, games and food everywhere, it was overwhelming. There was so much to see, what to do first. There was Mickey, Minnie, ooh and Goofy. So many rides and things to do, ... • 9. Benefits Of A New Team When I was in Noida working for Headstrong, my team used to go out for lunch on special occasions. As that area had quite many options, sometimes we used to be in a fix as to where to go. Another reason for long decision making was because different people had their own tastes. And, few of them had even been to places we were zeroing–in on and didn 't want to go again. Now, that was a mess as it would delay our outings that were supposed to become a lifetime memory for a few at least! We tried to plan well ahead in advance, but that also had issues as people wanted to delay it to the last minute. We primarily relied on word–of–mouth recommendations and what we as a team preferred the most. All in all, it used to go just fine most of the times. However, i remember one incident when one of our new team members strongly recommended a restaurant to which his family were regular visitors for many years. He was giving mouthwatering description of the dishes available there and most of us melted like butter on a parantha and were looking forward to go there. Come the D–day, being a foodie, i was especially charged up; but there was one delay after another as few of the folks were held up in meetings. It was way past my usual lunch time and finally, we went ahead around quarter to 3. We were all very hungry but to our utter disappointment we found the place closed. The colleague who had recommended us looked pretty sad and asked nearby shops if the restaurant had closed for good. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Nickle and Dimed: Trading Places Essay For Barbara Ehrenreich's book Nickel and Dimed to be effective, she has to utilize imagery, an extremely effective method of description. By her very detailed descriptions, Ehrenreich is able to "paint a picture" of what it was like for her to go through her yearlong adventure. She incorporates imagery often, making the reader feel like they are actually in the story, feeling what she felt, seeing what she saw, and going through what she went through. For example when Ehrenreich describes her room at the Clearview Inn, " Room 133 contains a bed, a chair, a chest of drawers, and a TV fastened to the wall. I plead for and get a lamp to complement the single overhead bulb. Instead of the mold smell, I now breathe a mixture of fresh paint and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This leads the reader to assume that this story is not at all fiction, however based exactly on what she went through. When the reader assumes this, the book takes on a realistic quality, helping the reader relate it to his or her own life. This method of realism is quite effective throughout the book, when the name Wal–Mart comes up in the story, it brings the reader into the story as that name is popular nationwide, and because it is real. After all, who has not been to Wal–Mart? When asked on the first day of class to prove the statement "experience is the best teacher" wrong, I had trouble doing so. Throughout my life, I have learned more from making mistakes, than I have just assuming what is wrong and right. My experience as a goaltender for hockey, has everything to do with learning from your mistakes, but being the person I am, I will take the risks or chances, and learn from them. I am not lethargic enough to sit and listen to other people tell me what to do, I have to go out and try it for myself. So, I believe that Ehrenreich's project was a great idea, however for the wrong cause. Instead of just wanting to know what it would be like to not have everything, she just seemed to want publicity. By writing this story she could have put more effort into explaining the conditions these people worked in, and how they lived. She could have given personality traits, told whether or not they were depressed, and so on. She never seemed to put her heart into her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. In Vincent O’Sullivan’S Finding The Pattern, Solving The In Vincent O'Sullivan's Finding the Pattern, Solving the Problem: Katherine Mansfield The New Zealand European, it is noted that Katherine Mansfield 'was an enthusiast for the cinema', that 'she acted in several movies' and that 'her letters frequently took up such images as the months that "stream by like a movie picture"'(18). Furthermore, her short story At the Bay begins with the line 'Very early morning'(Mansfield 5), that when interpreted from a literary standpoint, is more suited to a screenplay direction than the opening of a narrative. From studying At the Bay, alongside The Garden Party and Miss Brill, it is evident that her love of cinema influences her own writing, to the point where techniques that are prominently filmic, such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The 'big bush–covered hills'(Mansfield 1) and 'sandy road with shallow puddles(2) of the opening are made evident that they're not situated by the 'weed–hung rocks' and 'small rock pools'(20) of a later section, yet the consistency of the style in which each area is described, the narrative voice wandering from components of the setting, such as the 'tide' to the 'sunlight' (20) to the 'green binds...in the bungalows'(21) and the 'pawa shells'(21), not unlike a montage, unite the set of surroundings by replicating the manner in which they are portrayed. This parallels Citizen Kane's 'News of the World' sequence, a montage that uses accurate renditions of a series of news segments, where newspapers and footage are both crafted to look as authentic and possible, to create a realistic depiction of media coverage that encompasses the globe through the different languages printed on certain newspapers. This of course brings different places together to add to the legibility of the scene and thus its overall realism. Much like Mansfield, Welles uses the idea of consistency and replication in his montage as a way of uniting it to the real world. Yet this montage sequence in Citizen Kane fulfills another purpose. This scene takes place directly after Kane's death, a sombre, moving moment. By directly contrasting that moment with a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The Geranium And The Short Story Flannery O'Connor's The Geranium and A Good Man is Hard to Find: Imagery in Flashbacks and Memories Many of Flannery O'Connor's short stories take place over the course of one day. The length of her scenes, the description in which she fills them and her pristine use of dialogue makes her protagonists well developed. They do not feel like characters we have just met, but ones we have always known, making the stories feel longer than a day's time, too. In studying a few O'Connor stories there is another common element of craft she uses in order for us to understand and know her characters better, given the handful of pages that make up her short stories. That is her use of flashback and character memory. The first story in Flannery O'Connor's The Complete Stories is The Geranium. Here, we spend a day with Old Dudley, a racist man from the south who has since moved in with his daughter in a tiny New York City apartment. O'Connor's mastery becomes alive automatically. Flannery provides us with flashbacks though Old Dudley's mind. This helps us to literally see him better, for the flashbacks contain short, but vivid imagery, showing us another side of Dudley and the other life he used to live. The same can be said about the nameless grandmother in A Good Man in Hard to Find. While the protagonist here is slightly more personable, she has a similar mindset as Old Dudley: her ways and ideals are stuck in the past. We are given similar glimpses into this past life through the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. The Classroom Is A Critical Locus For Student... "The classroom is a critical locus for student interpersonal and educational development" (Hudgins et al, 37, 1994). When a student walks into a classroom their first impression is the physical classroom environment. A student either sees the classroom as a positive place to learn or a negative space they are forced to attend every day. Research has shown that students subject matter, achievement and attitudes improve when the teacher creates a physical classroom environment that is more conducive to learning. (Hudgins et al, 37, 1994). "Well–run classrooms begin with the room's physical layout" (Shalaway). First things first, a classroom 's physical layout should reflect the teaching style of the teacher. As a future teacher, the style of teaching that I value the most is partner collaboration. I find that students learn to the best of their ability when they can bounce ideas off each other and corporate in table groups. In the center of my classroom, I have placed my student's tables with a group of chairs around the table. This will give my students the opportunity to work and collaborate with each other. I have also made sure that students tables are far enough apart so that there is an aisle big enough for students and disabled students to get up and down the aisle easily. In front of the tables, I have placed a mini lesson rug by the smart board. The mini lesson rug will act as an extra place for mini lessons and further needed instruction/practice for ... These three theories are associated with the study of societies. Each of these three theories were shown in the movie, Trading Places, a american comedy made in 1983 that illustrates the advantages of different social classes by making a banker and a homeless person trade places. Before I start to analyse the movie to each theory, I will first start by explaining each theory for a definition and to have a better understanding. Symbolic interactionism is a theory is defined as, "a theoretical perspective in which society is viewed as composed of symbols that people use to establish meaning, ... The movie is a comedy, but is also known for a deeper analysis that shows its focal point is on sociological concepts. The social conflict theory stretches throughout the movie. A scene that best illistrastrated this theory was present in the beginning of the movie. In this scene the homeless man named billy bumped into louis, a high class banker. Louis briefcase then fell out of his hand, and automatically assumes he's being robbed by the homeless man. Louis then calls the police. Police then goes on to chase Billy and he soon gets caught. Due to the event, brothers begin to argue that billy is not a bad person but only ats as so because of his social class. They also went on to say if Louis was in Billy's shoes he would act in thee same manner. The brothers feel that Billy only seems bad by nature. Whether it's sitting in your bedroom covered in blankets, in the woods on a hike, or with all your friends at a party, everyone has a place that they go whenever the opportunity presents itself. For me, now, it's downtown Chicago. If you would've asked me that question a few years ago, it would've probably been somewhere close to home. That was before I realized how much I loved traveling, and how much I loved being places that were different from what I was used to. Include at least 10 marble rolls. Make sure that there would enough evidence to estimate the size, shape, and location of the object. Explain your rationale in between 5–7 sentences. Based on the path of the marbles in the diagram, there is enough evidence to estimate the size of the shape, based on where the marble bounces off of the shape and where the marble rolls past the shape. You can also use this method to determine the approximate location of the shape. In the diagram that I drew, you would be able to determine that the shape isn't located towards the top or bottom of the cardboard and that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In what ways did this activity represent a model for Rutherford's efforts to determine the structure of the atom? What type of thinking and evidence (direct or indirect) were necessary in order to draw conclusions in both situations? This activity is a model for Rutherford's experiments to determine the structure of the atom because in the activity, we rolled a marble towards a shape that we could not see in order to determine its size, shape, and location, just as Rutherford observed how particles bounced off of or went through a sheet of gold foil, in order to determine the size, shape, and properties of atoms. We used the angles at which the marble bounced off of the shape in order to determine the properties of that shape in our activity, and in Rutherford's experiments, he observed how the particles bounced off of or went through the gold foil, in order to determine the atom's properties. Also, we used a piece of cardboard to cover our target because Rutherford was not able to see the atoms that he was studying. In order to draw conclusions in both situations, you need to determine what makes the marble or particle roll or travel the way it does. For example, in the experiments, if the particle went straight through the gold leaf and in our activity, if the marble rolls straight through the cardboard, you can infer that the particles and the marble didn't hit the target. However, if the marble or particle bounced off of the target at an angle, you need to be able to use those angles to determine what shape and size the target is and where it is ... The question that I am trying to answer however is if I can predict how many times the ball will hit a wall before landing in a pocket and also which pocket it will land in. For six years now, I have been taking piano lessons. I possess my fair share of performances. One festival I have attended several times is the Sonatina Festival. Sonatina Festival is not a normal common festival, it is a competition for first, second, and third place. The festival contains the categories of beginner, intermediate, late intermediate, and advanced. Taking place every February or March, Sonatina Festival comes to life. At the age of 12 or 13, I walked through the doors of the church the festival occupied for the second time in my life. Spending the past 5 months learning and memorizing a song was unquestionably going to pay off. That first place under the intermediate title was mine. Confidence clouded my mind when I walked through the doors to play my piece. The quiet room was occupied by the piano, the judge, and me. Nerves started kicking in, strong. My hands started shaking, my stomach was doing flips I was playing the most unfavorable thoughts of failure in my mind. Before I knew it, my performance was over. Personally, I thought I played my piece considerably well, but definitely not first place worthy. Walking out of the room, I was congratulated by my mother, along with my piano teacher. Throughout my childhood, my family and I would constantly travel to many outdoor recreation locations including Myrtle Beach, Pinery Provincial Park, and St. Jacobs Farmers' Market. These places hold special meaning and an emotional bond for me, because I associate them with youthfulness and happiness. While everybody views place differently, people form emotional attachments and beliefs of these places based on different specifications. According to Williams and Stewart (1998), individuals may feel a special connection to a place based on its social or personal history, scenic beauty, or spiritual meaning (p. 22). To truly understand the meaning of place and the importance of outdoor recreation, I recently took part in four separate experiential activities at St. Jacobs Farmers' Market in Waterloo, Ontario. After partaking in four outdoor experiential episodes at St. Jacobs Farmers' Market, I decided to create a time capsule of my experience for people to open fifty years from now. The time capsule included post cards, photos of my experience, and a few physical components that I found represented the market well and represented the importance of outdoor–recreation. One of the physical components was a maple sugar candy to represent how maple was an important staple to Canadians, and how procuring maple syrup is an activity that can ... A connection to a physical location may present us with the perception that we either belong or not belong however, it is the connections that we form with people in places, memories of previous places and ones response to experiences within places that heightens ones sense of belonging or alienation. The concept of belonging through connections with people, experiences and memories in certain places is explored in the texts Romulus my Father a memoir by Raimond Gaita and Oranges and Sunshine directed by Jim Loach. This vivid memory of his mother saying goodbye leads to a very complex bond between the pair. This principle of self– regulating streets was successfully implemented using narrow streets and having parking spaces along the streets so as to reduce traffic congestion. In light traffic conditions, this design has proven to be very effective. Dorset Street in the northern part of Dublin also serves as a self–regulating street. The major themes of the short story were home, family, poverty and self– identity. Cisneros need for a home is much related to her economic situation, her dreams and frustrations towards her family. Someone to blame for this would be Mama and Papa that keep forming this image of the perfect house in the authors mind. "This was the house Papa talked about when he held a lottery ticket and this was the house Mama dreamed up in the stories she told us before we went to bed." The severity of her disappointment and the shame is demonstrated when she describes the house on Mango Street. "Where do you live? she asked. There, I said pointing up to the third floor. You live there? There... I lived there. I nodded." The exchange of question and answer between the nun and the author created a tome of tension to the dialogue. • 105. Essay on Sula Things can happen in some places and the tale of them will be interesting. The same story laid in another city would be ridiculous. Setting situates the story`s events, characters and mood through place, time and weather. Without the different dimensions of setting, a story would not have the diversity to introduce new or changed characters, define their true identities, compare societies and reveal hidden emotions. Through Morrison`s Sula, setting is used as the key factor behind every event that occurred. In order to introduce a changed character back to a story the author must first present the character to a new different environment. In Morrison`s novel we see that Shadrack, Plum and Sula go away from the Bottom and return completely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When characters are placed in different situations, they tend to reveal their true identities. In most cases setting is used to identify a characters true characteristics or intentions. The purpose of this is to entertain the plot of the story. As the story moves on, characters are not necessarily changed but more over presented in different characteristics that the reader had not seen them in before. "Helene Wright was an impressive woman, at least in Medallion she was." (Morrison, 11) Respected by many in Medallion because of her physique, when presented in a new setting, Helene was stripped away by one word, "gal." A simple change of place, proved that Helene was not different than the other women in Medallion. The highly admired woman was now lowering herself from the "lady" image she had obtained by being coquette to a white conductor. Writers use setting to reveal the hidden emotions of characters. Characters react differently when placed in particular environments. Morrison used this technique, when in a single chapter she portrayed Sula in two distinct moods. In chapter 1922, Sula is introduced as upfront and tough when "she slashed off only the tip of her finger" (Morrison, 54) to intimidate her bullies. A young girl who is not terrified, "if I can do that to myself, what you suppose ill do to you?" (Morrison, 55) is later on placed in an environment of comfort and viewed as ... • 117. A Different History and Where I Come from Essay Elizabeth Brewster and Sujata Bhatt both suggest the significance of place in helping to shape a person's identity in their poems but they do it in different ways. Brewster suggests that places change our identity when she writes "People are made of places". This shows that every different place we visit we take the memories and experiences that we had there and keep them in our minds and hearts forever. Whereas Bhatt suggests that when we go to a new place we forget who we previously were and change ourselves so that we fit in with the new culture that we are living in. We know this from when she says "And how does it happen/ that after the torture". This shows the struggle to keep your cultural heritage when you move places. In "A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In "Where I Come From" Brewster uses the metaphor "ice and the breaking of ice". This is to show that even though you are in a different place than you are used to you are ready to break the ice when meeting new people and having new experiences. Bhatt suggests that you bring the conventions to the country you move to from your old country and then you add to them from the things you learn in the new culture that you are living in. We know this because she says "Great Pan is not dead". This also shows that your cultural heritage will never die as it will always be a part of you whether it's obvious or not. Elizabeth Brewster suggests that places change our identities when she says "nature tidily plotted in little squares". This gives us the impression that everyone in the city is the same and they are all neat and tidy busybodies. This differs from what Bhatt suggests when she says "Here, the gods roam freely, / disguised as snakes or monkeys". This shows that in India you can be whoever or whatever you want without being judged by anyone and you can be unique. However "A Different History" is similar to what Brewster is suggesting as Bhatt writes "every tree is sacred". This shows that everything and everyone is equal and has the same rights as each other. Brewster shows that in her homeland everything is different because there are, "battered ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 125. My Experience : My Personal Experience In High School My junior year was the third and final year that I was enrolled in the business academy at my high school. Being in the business academy was just a sophisticated way of saying that I was taking an online business course through a local community college. It also meant that I was automatically a part of a career and technical student organization called Business Professionals of America. For the three previous years, I had participated in the Regional BPA Competition, however, I fell short one place of qualifying for the State Competition each year. By the time the winter of my junior year came around, I became determined to finally qualify for State. Placing first or second at State would enable me to attend Nationals which was held in Orlando. Nevertheless, my ultimate goal was to compete at the State level. I studied and practiced more than I ever had in the past. I rummaged through an abundance of resources and asked my business teacher a plethora of questions to ensure that I understood the material well. When the time had come in February, I worked on my contest diligently and I revised it multiple times before submitting it. I was sanguine about my final product, but I also didn't want to get my hopes up too much in case the outcome was not what I was wishing for. On a chilly February morning, the business academy students, including myself, boarded a school bus headed for Greenville High School for the Regional BPAAwards Ceremony. Sitting in the very back row of the auditorium, I waited anxiously for my contest to be announced. After what felt like a lifetime, I spotted my name projected onto the big screen which indicated that I had made it into the top five, and it was time for me to report to the stage. As the bright warm lights hit my face, I hoped that the crowd wouldn't be able to see my shaking knees. Starting with sixth place, the announcer called out what place each contestant came in. Finally it was down to second and first place and my name had not yet been called. I was overwhelmed with relief knowing that no matter what place I came in at that point, I had qualified for State. I ended up placing first and my teacher congratulated me with a candy bar as I went back to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I Liked More Was The One From Gretel Ehrlich The essay I liked more was the one from Gretel Ehrlich I liked this essay because when she was telling her story she was focusing on only one place. This essay was very different than Annie Dillard I say this because when Annie was talking she didn't focus on only one place in her essay she was focusing on many different places. I personally think that the essay from Gretel Ehrich was the best. Why I think is the best is because when I was reading it I felt like I can picture what she was talking about in my head. As I was readying this essay I felt like I can place myself in the place she was describing for example when she was taking about being at the farm and other things she made reference too. This essay was just really calm, essay to fallow, it was clear, and as I as readying it I felt like I was connected to it. this is why I liked this essay more than the one from Annie Dillard when I was readying the essay from Annie I just could focus on what she was talking about because she would take her story to multiple places. She would be talking about one thing and then she would all the sudden change it and this is what I didn't like about her essay because it was just really hard to fallow with all the multiple places she was referring too. Another thing I think like about it I that when it was telling her story she would repeat herself. This is what made it hard for me to understand, it's just crazy and goes on and on. This is why I choose the essay from Gretel. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A wall painted dark red will need several layers of primer in order to be painted a light blue. Think of that dark red wall as a speech, or piece of writing. Those first pages will need renovation after renovation to get to the final product; the light blue wall. Before John F. Kennedy made his light blue inaugural speech using pathos, antithesis, repetition and parallelism, it was a dark red version by Galbraith and Stevenson that included small amounts of rhetorical devices. After multiple revisions, they turned a boring, basic speech into a work of art, really, making it one of the best inaugural speeches ever made. "Victory," "freedom," ... • 141. Place Symbolism And Land Politics In Beowulf Stuart Elden, in his article "Place Symbolism and Land Politics in Beowulf", discusses the usage of place in Beowulf. He declares, "In this text, site and place are given a range of symbolic, material, and emotive resonances." There are copious examples in Beowulf where place has significant meaning. Settings are presented as either good or bad, boundaries are set and crossed, and the placement of boundaries created conflict and exclusion. In Beowulf, there are many places that are clearly presented as good and bad, safe and unsafe. In the text, the reader learns about places that have a somewhat concrete goodness or turmoil present. Heorot Hall described in the beginning of Beowulf is one of the good places. Of the hall, it is written, "Soon it stood there, finished and ready, in full view, the hall of halls". The hall is representative of the community and the identity of the realm, as well as serving as a gathering place for the people to drink and socialize. Elden describes the hall as a place of great joy and celebration, as well as a sacred place for various ceremonies and rituals to take place (cite this and make sure proper paraphrasing). These descriptions create a sense of community and safety in the hall. In contrast, there are many places, such as Grendel's mere or the dragon's lair, that are presented in a much darker, evil light creating a bad place. The mere is described with a level of ambiguity that creates a sense of unsettlement and eeriness in the reader. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 145. Literary Analysis Of 'The Haunted Boy' Literary Analysis– The Haunted Boy The setting is used by the author in stories to display the mood of the scene. Specific details bring up certain moods for the characters and the reader. For example, when talking about a warm, sunny day, the reader can infer that the scene is going to be happy and there is going to be no misfortunate event that happens. Carson Smith McCullers uses the setting in her short story "The Haunted Boy" to display the different moods of the main character Hugh. The settings in the story help show how uncomfortable Hugh is in the house after a past experience and shows how happy he is outside when he remembers happy memories. The beginning of the story starts out with one of few happy settings. The front yard was one of the only places that brought happy feelings to the story. McCullers' short story starts out by describing the day having sunshine on a mid–April afternoon and the front lawn being green (page 675). These descriptions allow the reader to think warm and colorful thoughts. The story then goes to talk about how the boys are running outside in the warm. "Hugh race up the sidewalk, and John followed him. They finished the front steps with two bounds, and the door slammed after them" (page 675). This shows how the boys are having fun and enjoying each others company. Finally, the front yard is the place that Hugh remembers some of his fond memories of his mother. "Sometimes she would be out fooling with the border of spring flowers– the candytuft, the sweet William, the lobelias (she had taught him the names)..." (page 675). From this explanation, the reader can relate to the character thinking about different memories that they may have that bring happy thoughts to mind. One of the only places in the house that brought a comfortable feeling to Hugh was the kitchen. The kitchen is described as bright and clean and the best room in the house (page 676). In the kitchen, there are fresh towels and clean dishes. This statement gives you the feeling that everything is going well in the house and there is nothing wrong. The kitchen is also the only place in the house that made Hugh feel comfortable and safe (Page 677), except on this particular day when there was no note from his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some of those places may have had an impact on a person's life that changed him or her as a person. For others, some places may have a special meaning, teaching, or maybe because the best memories were made in that special place. For me, the best memories and the one place that I always remember is Woodburn Oregon. This city has so many good, happy, and bad memories that I still remember. These memories bring back my childhood and how my perspective of life changed. The city also has great restaurants, theaters, museums and arcades. Woodburn also has amazing views and has great agricultural lands filled with flowers such as, colorful tulips, and roses. Comparing Home in Richard Ford's I Must Be Going and Scott Sander's Homeplace Most people define home as a comfortable setting which provides love and warmth. In Scott Sanders "Homeplace" and Richard Ford's "I Must Be Going" the concept of home is defined in two different ways. Sanders believes that by moving from place to place, the meaning of home has been diminished. Sanders believes that America's culture "nudges everyone into motion" (Sanders 103) and that his "longing to become an inhabitant rather than a drifter" (103) is what sets him apart from everyone else. Ford prefers to stay on the move. His argument is life's too short to settle in one place. He believes home is where you make it, but permanence is not a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sanders has a different opinion of moving just to see other places. Sanders believes that in order to know a place one must "root" themselves into it. Sanders proposes that "if you are not yourself placed, then you wander the world like a sightseer, a collector of sensations, with no gauge for measuring what you see" (103). Ford has a different feeling. He believes that seeing all of these places creates memory, and imagination of these other places just provides an illusion of what is really going on in the world. He says, "Memory always needs replenishing, and anyway you misunderstand imagination and how it thrives in us by extending partial knowledge to complete any illusion of reality" (Ford 110). Sanders would disagree that home is not a place. He starts out his essay with a story of a family whose house is destroyed by a tornado three times. Each time they rebuild in the same spot. Sanders admires this family for their commitment to their home. Sanders believes length of time in an area has a definite effect on someone's meaning for that place. Sanders is encouraged by the words of Gary Snyder in The Practice of the Wild: "You know, I think if people stay somewhere long enough, the spirits will begin to speak to them" (104). Ford does not believe in commitment to a place. He quotes Ralph Emerson saying, "We live amid surfaces, and the true art of life is to skate well on them" (Ford ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
