Annie Sullivan Philosophy
A teacher s role in the class room and values reflected modeling Anne Sullivan
3843
Rivier College
Abstract
Anne Sullivan became a teacher after facing learning difficulties, she was sent to the Perkins
School for the blind, after finding out as a child she was forming blindness at the age of four.
Anne was top of her class and was taught by the best teachers at that school. With their strict and
disciplined way of teaching in the classroom she wanted to take that style and use it to help others.
One of her students was a child born deaf and blind; Helen Keller s family had a struggle finding
answers, until they stumbled upon The Perkins School seeking help for Helen. Sullivan ... Show

(1933). Time, 22(17), 69.) By doing that Anne would be able to be one on one and hands on
teach her brail, and have her in an appropriate classroom setting bringing her success. Anne saw
how smart, determined and independent Helen was and had nothing but high hopes for her,
with Sullivan s help she knew with her right teaching Helen would be nothing but successful. In
the movie the Miracle Worker, when she was able to have Helen in an environment where she
was capable of learning; she proceeded to start by teaching her the alphabet. By taking Helen s
hand and forcing her to feel her fingers making letter then associating it with the object. Annie s
first act was to thrust a doll into the hands of her pupil. When I had played with it a little while,
recalled Helen Keller years later, Miss Sullivan slowly spelled into my hand the word d o l l. I
was at once interested in this finger play ... I did not know [for several weeks] that I was spelling
a word or even that words existed. (Review. (1957). Time, 69(7), 42.) This got her to begin
understanding what Anne was doing, that being a good example of John Dewey s theory that
concepts are reflective thought and action. Both Anne and John s theories of teaching and learning
are very similar; to every teacher their methods are famous throughout

Acknowledging History s Mistakes of Blackface Minstrelsy
To consider something to be forgotten, good or bad, history loses its definition and becomes
distorted with fiction. If you can t acknowledge history s mistakes you can t develop and grow
as a society. To forget blackface minstrelsy would mean to forget such a vast part of early
American history and a part of the early development American popular culture. You could say to a
more extreme extent it would be like the western world forgetting slavery of the native Africans or
even the Spanish forgetting how they single handedly caused the demise of the Inca civilization.
Even though these parts of history could be forgotten because of there matter of sensitively. We as
a society must acknowledge our history in all its flaws no matter how sensitive or uncomfortable
the subject is to people today. It was something that helped culturally raise a nation that didn t know
better. As tasteless as blackfaceappears by todays standard it still does hold a influence on the
American entertainment industry and how black characters are portrayed in mainstream films and
other entertainment.
Even through blackface has not been part of American entertainment for some time now there is
still a wide use of certain characters and stereotypes that show links to the early entertainment.
So even thought something like blackface is viewed racist and old fashion its still holds a firm
foundation in American entertainment.
The history of Blackface minstrelsy does not just lead back to western

Given the rate at which smartphone are penetrating the market and component prices are declining
by 2015 there will be, at least, 2 billion smart mobile devices in use globally. (Kenney, 2011).
Smartphone sales will be driven by two main factors, BI Intelligence says:
Replacement of nearly 5 billion dumb phones with smartphones (smartphones currently make up
only 10% of handsets worldwide)
Price declines. The average price of a smartphone will drop from about $315 last year to $200 over
the next several years
This will obviously have a huge impact on the mobile Internet economy, which is already exploding
from the growth of smartphone penetration in the past few years.
Some other highlights from the report:
Smartphone unit sales will grow at nearly a 30% compound annual growth rate over the next five
years
Smartphones will represent about two thirds of all mobile phone purchases by 2016,
Smartphones will be a $320 billion market by 2016.
Competition Situation
At the time Apple recognized the need for a handheld mobile device the market players were a
few and mainly business users. This explains the strong market share RIM had. Palm on its hand
also was also somewhat popular but having limitations in terms of usability and software, deprived
the brand from gaining significant position. Most of the devices present at the market later were

Sophocles Euripides Bacchae
Commentary on Bacchae Paul Woodruff s translation of the Greek play Euripides Bacchae tells the
story of the primary character Dionysus, who is the son of the Greek God Zeus. Dionysus is out to
seek his revenge on his mother s sisters, his grandfather Cadmus, and also his cousin Pentheus
because they have denied that he, Dionysuswas born a God. Also important in this play is Pentheus
who was made King of Thebes as a young teenage boy by his grandfather who is also Cadmus.
Pentheus learns of Dionysus trying to change order in Thebes and Pentheus is determined to stop
this form happening at all costs. While reading this play, one may think it is good versus evil ,

Would any true God make a mother kill her child in the manner in which Agave did just so a
point could be proven? As for Pentheus being misunderstood, one could say that Pentheus is a
teenage kid who was just trying to rule Thebes the best he knew how, or what he thought at the
time was right. The play does not go into the depths of Pentheus background, childhood, or what
his exact issue with women is. His dislike, disgust, and annoyance with women leaves me as a
reader to wonder if this is just a phase of teenage puberty Pentheus does not know how to deal with,
or is it a more deep seeded issue such as, could he have been sexually abused by his mother or
perhaps one of his aunts as a child? We will never

The fragments were amplified using Phusion High Fidelity DNA polymerase with standard
reaction conditions and either genomic or plasmid templates. All fragments shown on the gel are
of the expected size indicating the correct fragment has been amplified. The expected sizes are
indicated on the gel with mCherry 737 bp, TtrpC 589 bp, noxA 1976 bp, mssD 3097 bp and
PgpdA 2338 bp. After gel extraction and purification mCherry was shown to be of very low
concentration 13.5 ng/L by the nanodrop. This was not sufficient for successful Gibson assembly of
the plasmid. The other fragments had sufficient amplification with TtrpC containing 82.3 ng/L,

Candy to investigate the importance of the Cdc24 PH domain for localisation. A. Candy
transformed E. festucae with either cdc24 EGFP or cdc24PH EGFP and then three rounds of
nuclear purification were carried out to increase the proportion of hyphae that contain the construct.
Filamentous fungi contain multinuclear hyphae compartments which means that not all nuclei
within the fungi will contain the construct. Subculturing was carried out on media containing
antibiotic to purify transformants from non transformants. There was fifty independent
transformants for each cdc24 EGFP and cdc24 PH EGFP. From these transformants 34 cdc24
EGFP and 23 cdcPH EGFP contained a sufficient DNAconcentration following crude DNA
extraction from all plated E. festucae. PCR was used to screen individual transformants for the
presence of the band sized 2338 bp showing that the transformants contains the construct.
Unfortunately, a negative control was not included which makes these results difficult to interpret
but since some do not contain a band it can be assumed that contamination is unlikely to have
interfered with these results. This shows that the construct is present in many of the individual
transformants which allows continuation of this project where an attempt to visualise the proteins
can be carried out. The PCR results were confirmed by A. Candy with inclusion of a negative
control.

The Civil War still has major impacts on America today. For example, an immediate response to
the war was the ending of slavery and the beginning of equality in education, jobs, and many
other aspects of life. On the negative side, some traces of racism still exist today. Black people
are still reminded of their ancestors and their past of slavery before the war and segregation after
the war. Marathon, Greece is located about 22 miles from Athens, Greece. This is the site of the
famous Battle of Marathon which took place in 490 B.C. between the Athenians, led by Platea,
and the Persians, led by Datis and Artaphernes. The Persian War was sparked by the Greek
involvement and support in the Ionian revolt, Ionia was a small Greek polis. The Athenians sent
forces to aid the Ionians in their endeavor to overthrow Persian rule. King Darius I of Persia
swore he would get revenge on the Athenians. The Battle of Marathon marked a turning point in
the Persian Wars, which ended the Persian invasion. The Greeks took a victory over Persian in
this battle and Persia was at a loss of more than just dignity. They lost the chance of expansion
which was necessary to acquire more resources and wealth for their kingdom. To notify the city
of defeat or victory a runner, Phaedippas was sent to Athens and when he arrived he was able to
get the word victory out and then collapsed and died. The Greek word for victory is Nike and this
is where the shoe company got its name.

La Hacienda Musa Case Study
La Hacienda Musa1
La Hacienda Musa was a long way from Leuven, Belgium. But for Maria Keller, the transition was
as natural as it could be. She had spent twenty years in Leuven studying banana genetics at the
Catholic University of Leuven s Laboratory of Tropical Crops, the world center of banana research.
She had learned about the challenges the banana growing industry faced from a variety of
diseases, why bananas seemed to be especially susceptible, and how difficult it is to develop new
strains of the world s most popular fruit. But after two decades of study, Maria was ready for
something new. She did her homework, packed her few possessions, and headed to her newly
purchased banana plantation in Costa Rica. To say that La Hacienda ... Show more content on

The prices for bananas were also uncertain. The price (paid to the grower) for conventional
bananas was normally distributed with a mean of $220 per tonne and a standard deviation of
$28 per tonne. Because large yields for La Hacienda Musa tended to occur at the same time as
large yields from other banana plantations, large yields tended to correspond to lower market
prices. Thus the market price was negatively correlated with Maria s yields for conventionally
grown bananas, having a correlation coefficient of 0.50. Organic bananas would sell at a premium
over conventional bananas, but how much this premium would be was uncertain. Maria thought
the percentage premium would have a lognormal distribution with a mean of 15% and standard
deviation of 2.5%. (A premium of 5%, for example, meant that the price paid for organic bananas
would be 5% more than the price for conventional bananas.) This premium depended mainly on
market factors how many growers were in the organic business, consumer demand for organic
produce and was independent of all of other uncertainties Maria faced. Finally, the costs associated
with growing bananas were uncertain and approximately normally distributed with a mean of
$1800 per hectare and a standard deviation of $300 per hectare. Because the uncertainty in growing
costs was primarily due to labor rates and water use, the growing costs were identical under the two
growing methods. These costs were uncorrelated with the other uncertainties.

their stories in the audience s real word. However, what if the big screen at the movie theater
could be used to reproduce a panel straight out of a comic book, without worrying about if it
looks real ? That is what the movie Sin City does. Sin City is an extremely engaging movie that
grasps its audience s attention by its uniqueness. With so many comic book adaptations available,
Sin City stands out because of its uncommon visual style, intriguing stories from different

The Reasoned Action Model
When dealing with persuasion, the Reasoned Action Model is often used as a way to predict
behavior. The attitude toward the behavior, the social perception of the norm, and the perceived
behavioral control all influence one s intentions, which in turn impacts their behavior. Due to the
fact that the Reasoned Action Model largely relies on social perception to ultimately determine
behavior, the use of social proofing can be tied in to further strengthen the persuasive message of
the YMCA. In order to accomplish this we plan to bring in Aaron Rogers to visit schools throughout
the Wisconsin area and address the students on the importance of living a healthy and active
lifestyle. Initially, those being persuaded must determine their attitude

Multinational Corporations ( Mncs ) Essay
The enterprises that operate in numerous countries to produce or provide services outside their
original countries can be identified as Multinational Corporations (MNCs), or Transnational
Corporations (TNCs). Usually, an MNC can produce at least 25 percent of its world output outside
of its country of origin. Recently, a new breed of MNC emerges thanks to Internet based
communication tools. They begin their operations in different countries very early on. Because
they are small businesses, these companies are being called micro multinationals to distinguish
them from larger MNCs. Several of these micro multinationals are software development
companies. They have been looking for employees in many countries since the start of the age of
the Internet. Nowadays, an increasing number of micro multinationals actively market their
products and services in numerous nations. The use of Internet tools like Google, Yahoo, MSN,
Ebay and Amazon makes it easier for the micro multinationals to reach potential customers in
other countries. There are many ways to explain the diverse and manifold growth of the
multinationals. Those include these factors: (1) Expansion of market skills, (2) Superior
marketing, (3) Huge financial resources, (4) Technological edge. Expansion of Market Skill After
India announced the liberalized foreign investment policy in 1991, a growth spurt in the number of
MNCs as well as foreign collaborations occurred. The MNCs in India are very diverse. Though they

The Successful State Intervention For South Korea Essay
Koral Zazueta
PSCI 241 Essay #1
The successful state intervention can be identified by different methods of state intervention aimed
at promoting industrialization. Kohli claims that cohesive capitalist states have been the most
effective in fostering industrialization, specifically in South Korea, neo patrimonial states being
least effective, which existed in Nigeria. The fragmented multiclass states India, is in between
(Kohli, Atul. 2004). Ultimately, the role of different types of colonialismand state intervention
effects state development in the developing world.
Kohli argues that the state capacity of India, Nigeria and South Korea have been molded by their
different colonial experiences, but rapid economic growth is enhanced by a more forceful state
intervention. According to Kohli, successful state intervention depends on market reinforcement
policies and whether or not support of profit for private investors and cooperation between the
private sector and the state exists (Kohli, Atul. 2004). While this method did exist and work for
South Korea, Botswana experienced a different type of state intervention with minimal colonial
influence. The role of the British in Botswana was minimal compared to the Japanese s role in
South Korea. Botswana s precolonial institutions endured throughout colonialism and after their
independence. Despite the constraints on political elites the institutions placed were supported and
were imperative in promoting economic success

I appreciate the opportunity to advise you regarding the difference between the net income and

Bacterial Meningitis Essay
There are three different types of meningitis; viral, fungal, and bacterial meningitis. Although not as
common as viral meningitis, bacterial meningitis is more likely to leave individuals with permanent
disabilities. In children, disabilities can range from deafness, hearing loss, and cerebral palsy? the
most common after effects. And in adults, septic shock, brain swelling, and hydrocephalus are most
likely to occur if the disease advances without treatment within a sufficient time period. The three
main bacteria responsible for bacterial meningitisare streptococcus pneumoniae, haemophilus

In the 1930s, infant mortality because of bacterial meningitis caused by Haemophilus influenza
type B was almost at one hundred percent. But with the onset of antibiotics in the 1960s, the
mortality rate was reduced to a mere range of five to ten percent. Thirty percent of survivors
were often left with defects such as deafness, blindness, seizures, and mental retardation(Mark A.
Herbert, ed. Derek W. Hood, ed. E. Richard Moxon, ed. Haemophilus influenza Protocols ,
29?30). Anyone can carry the bacterium. The bacteria are found dormant in the back of their nose
and throat. Though they are dormant in the carrier, the carrier can still pass them on to another
person through ways such as: kissing, coughing, sneezing, sharing a cup, utensil, lip gloss, or
cigarette. In other words, through the exchange of respiratory and throat secretions. Some of these
ways of transmission are the core reasons as to why this disease is more prevalent in children under
five years of age (Common Bacterial Hib).
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a gram positive bacterium that is a normal inhabitant of the human

Advantage And Disadvantage Of E-Commerce
After I have gone through this article paper, my opinion would be, e commerce is becoming a
major factor in the development of business whether it is a global or a local business. This is
happening because the selection of data innovation is on the expanding pattern and hence prompts
various changes in business exercises. In any making decision situation, it has never been easy and
that is the situation that the SMEs nowadays are facing in their business. Before I go further with
the advantages of having e commerce in SMEs, I will first start with the disadvantages. First and
foremost is the organizational readiness. According to Chong (2009), the hierarchical preparation
measures whether the associations traits are sufficiently adequate in receiving the e commerce.
They proposed that top administration backing is the most critical component to figure out if the
organization is prepared to receive the e commerce. Based on above citation, I can say that it is all

Managers would include the agenda item of NCC change in bed placement strategy in all

the centres classification and bed load strategy and include an update of the CorrPoint news

Company Weaknesses And Resource Deficiencies
COMPANY WEAKNESSES AND RESOURCE DEFICIENCIES
Rising Prices: FedEx prices are higher as compared to their competitors which can be a potential
weakness if their customers do not perceive a difference between FedEx and its competitors.
Labor Disputes with Pilots: The FedEx Pilots Association is formed by the FedEx pilots. The
motive of this global body was to bring about changes in the pilots salaries, retirement benefits
and also restricting outsourcing of foreign flights. The pilots can share their views and feelings
through a website. There was a case in 1998 where the pilots were about to go on a strike which
enabled FedEx and FedEx Pilots Association to develop an agreement that was posted on the
website. However, this agreement did not satisfy the expectations of the pilots and thus, this is
an internal weakness for Federal Express keeping in mind the fact that it has about 3500
employees in its kitty. FedEx would suffer and force other competitors to take over if its pilots
would go on strike and also incur heavy losses. There was a case in 1997 where the UPS employees
went on strike forcing FedEx to take an extra 800,000 shipments in a day.
Running Subsidiaries Separately: FedEx has made a conscious effort to keep their companies

Cost of Capital at Ameritrade
Case Study of Cost of Capital at Ameritrade 1 a How can the CAPM be used to estimate the cost
of capital for a real business investment decision? CAPM results can be compared to the best
expected rate of return that investor can possibly earn in other investments with similar risks,
which is the cost of capital. Under the CAPM, the market portfolio is a well diversified, efficient
portfolio representing the non diversifiable risk in the economy. Therefore, investments have
similar risk if they have the same sensitivity to market risk, as measured by their beta with the
market portfolio. So, the cost of capital of any investment opportunity equals the expected return of
available investments with the same beta. This estimate is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Then we noticed that in exhibit 4, the period of historical data is from 1992 1996. However , the
stock of Waterhouse Investor Srvcs only last to Sep 1996, in order to compare the data in the
same time horizon, we select the period of 5 years, started from Sep 1991 to Sep 1996. We use
ri=(Pt Pt 1+Dt)/Pt 1 to calculate the monthly return rate of stocks. When the stock split, ri= (x
/y*Pt Pt 1+x/y*Dt)/Pt 1 We chose VW portfolio of NYSE, AMEX, and NASDAQ rather than
EW of NYSE, AMEX, and NASDAQ because the value weight portfolio can reflect the real
market situation better. We use the equation ri=(Pt Pt 1+Dt)/Pt 1 to calculate the monthly return
of stock of Charles Schwab Corp, Quick amp; Reilly Group and Waterhouse Investor Srvcs.
Then we have two methods to calculate the Beta of Equity for each company. The first method
is using equation COV(Ri,Rm)/Var(Rm) to get the Beta. Then we use BAsset=E/(E+D)*BE+D
/(E+D)*BD to calculate the Beta of Asset. We assume that the debt of these companies is risk
free, because debt represents only a small fraction of the firm s value. Here are the answers: |

The Power Of Mass Media In Gillian Flynn s Gone Girl
In modern society, mass media is an unavoidable influence on our daily lives. Humans are reliant on
mass communication and information for everything: work, education, entertainment, and much
more. In her novel Gone Girl, author Gillian Flynn uses the thrilling story of Amy Dunne and her
husband, Nick Dunne, who is accused of her murder to illustrate how much power mass mediahas
over the general public s judgement and opinions, despite their increasingly common dishonesty. In
Gone Girl, the mediaruns with stories that have little substance for the sole purpose of grabbing
public attention, they use their power to alter public perception multiple times and push their
own agenda, and they create public personalities for people that do not match who they truly are.
Contemporary media stations are willing to run with any story as long as it will get them views
and therefore money, even if the story has little to no substance. This is seen multiple times in
the novel Gone Girl. At an volunteer search event for his missing wife, Nick Dunne is
approached by Shawna Kelly. Shawna, a middle aged woman, shows up to the search event but
clearly is only there to attempt to flirt with Nick. Shawna goes through a few minutes of small
talk, which Nick is visibly not interested in, before forcing him to take a selfie with her. Nick
describes her feelings towards Shawna: I wanted to smack her, right then, the obliviousness, the
girliness of her: trying to get an ego stroke from the

Essay on History of Rumba, Merengue and Salsa
According to Holger Henke in his The West Indian Americans, Jamaican Rex Nettleford was
correct when he said, dance was a primary instrument of survival . As such a vital part of cultural
traditions, dance plays and integral role in the history culture. Three of the most influential styles
of dance in the Caribbean are the Rumba, The Merengue, and the Salsa. The word Rumba is
defined by the Merriam Webster Dictionary as a ballroom dance of Haitian and Dominican origin
in 2/4 time in which one foot is dragged on every step. Here, however, Rumba is a collection of
percussive rhythms, song and dance that originated in Cubaas a combination of the musical
traditions of Africans brought to Cuba as slaves and Spanish colonizers. The term... Show more

What we know today as Ballroom Rumba is basically son and not based on the authentic folk
rumba.
The first serious attempt to introduce the rumba to the United States was in 1913 but real interest
in Latin music began about 1929. In the late 1920 s, Xavier Cugat formed an orchestra that
specialized in Latin American music and opened at the Coconut Grove in Los Angeles and later
played at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. By the end of the decade he was recognized as
having the outstanding Latin orchestra of the day. Monsieur Pierre was London s leading teacher
of the Rumba and in 1955 he and his partner, Doris Lavelle, introduced the true Cuban Rumba
which was finally established after much argument, as the official recognized version in 1955.
During this time, the intellectual movement known as Afrocubanismo, a sort of mass relization of
the value of African culture (especially in the Caribbean), gave roots to traditional rumba. When
this afrocubanismo movement came along, it helped open the doors to African rooted dancing and
ways of expression. Rumba became more accepted among Cubans and was a recognized cultural
expression that identified as a part of the Cuban people. It also provided the means at that point of
public expression for those without representation in the media, the Afro Cubans.
Today, Rumba is most commonly performed informally and can be broken down into three types:

FEA 460 Spanish Cinema
Final Paper
Critical Analysis on Spanish Horror Films From the late 1960 s to the early 1970 s Spain rose as
one of the leading countries to dominate the horror film genre. Struggling under a brutal and
confining dictatorship for much of the 20th century, the horror genre of Spanish cinema took
awhile to come together. During the difficult and challenging days of General Franco s regime a
limited series of horror films were produced, mainly for the English market. In the later years under
Franco, hundreds of horror films were released. All were identified for their violence, eroticism, and
unrestrained cinematography. Recently, 21st century Spanish horror films, such as The Devil s
Backbone and The Others, tell chilling ghost stories that go beyond horror genre and successfully
mix suspense, horror, and coming of age techniques, during the harsh wartime, using sound,
lighting, editing, and innovative camera work.
After General Franco s regime fell, a new wave of young directors such as Bigas Luna and Pedro
Almodovar basked in their newfound freedom of expression to produce films that were unrestricted
and independent. In the 21st century, a more mature Spanish film industry had returned to the
horror genre in a big way. There have been many box office horror filmhits produced outside of
Spain with Spanish talent behind the camera, such as The Others. Spanish horror films had been
designed to appeal to international markets

The Pastor And Teacher As A Gift
And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as
pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of
the body of Christ... (Ephesians 4:11 12). This passage in Ephesians establishes the ability to be a
pastor and teacher as a gift. The pastoris often looked at as the face of a local church. This is
evidenced by the fact that when people are discussing a church, someone will almost certainly
ask the question: Who is the pastor of that church? . The pastor plays an important part in a local
church. He is generally looked to as the leader, the head teacher, and the lead counselor to a
specific local assembly. But a pastor s not just the leader of a local church. It s important to
examine how the Bibledefines a pastor. The word used for pastor in Ephesians 4 literally means
shepherd. The same word is used in 1 Peter 5 when Peter instructs the elders to shepherd the
flock of God. For this reason, we can know that role of elder and overseer are synonymous with
pastor. They are interchangeable terms. Elders were appointed by apostles to be in charge of a
local church (Acts 14:23). This is what Jesus meant when he told Peter to shepherd My sheep (John
21:16). Shepherds, naturally, were in charge of the sheep they tended. They feed them, guide them,
care for, and retrieve their sheep. When one thinks about what this illustration entails, we begin to
see how the term pastor is

The United Nations High Commission For Human Rights Essay
Introduction
The Office of the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights (OHCHR) defines Human
Rights as, rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex,
national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status. We are all equally entitled
to our human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and
indivisible. Human rights are a set of norms or standards of behaviour that are intended to protect
us in order for us to live fully. They belong to everyone by virtue of us being human. The concept
of Human Rights gained prominence in the 17th century in Europe but its roots can be traced to
ancient times. Most cultures created their own traditions and responsibilities to protect members of
those communities and ensure a better living. Murder, rape and other violations were punished in
various ways by the different cultures. The use of human rights in politics was realized in different
documents such as the French declaration on the rights of man and citizen (1789), the English Bill
of Rights (1689) and the US constitution Bill of rights (1791) and all encompass human rights.
However, these were not universal laws but national laws. Moreover, they promoted discrimination
of different groups plus slavery.
Human rights have become universal and their history is in many struggles all over the world.
Those opposed to slavery, commonly referred to as abolitionists, ended

my opinion, the problem was caused by the character of the man, but it happened when he was
young. When people were young, they might not think in a mature way, so it was possible for
them to make mistakes. However, the problem still existed for a long period, that s why people

Hope And Love Through Adoption
Hope and Love Through Adoption
The benefits for both the child and the birth parents in an open adoption are boundless. Adoption
is a complex process that ultimately results in an awaiting family receiving the baby they have
hoped for. Thousands of children are placed in an adoptive family every year. The child, from the
moment they are handed into the arms of their new family, will grow up just like any other but
their lives will also be forever changed. After the child has been adopted, depending on the type of
adoption, the birth family can still stay in touch with the adoptive family and relationships can
develop. Adoptees, birthparents, and adoptive parents can benefit in unexpected ways by
developing a relationship through open ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The cooperation of both the biological and adoptive parents is key to nourishing the child and to
maintaining that beneficial relationship.
Closed adoption is almost the polar opposite to open adoption. Closed adoption is when the birth
parents seal their personal information and have no personal contact with the adoptive parents or
the child. The adoptive parents and the child cannot gain access to any personal identifying
information unless the biological parents unseal the records or the child meets the age required.
This form of adoption is extremely restrictive and often leaves the child wondering about their past
and why they were adopted. Most children are left with various questions that cannot be answered
due to maintaining the privacy of the birth parents. Although closed adoption can keep the adoptee
and the adoptive parents safe, if the birth parents were dangerous in any way, most children have to
wait until they are adults to search for information that may still be restricted. Some birth parents
eventually unseal the adoption files but request to not be contacted. Closed adoption can have as
many restrictions as the birth parents decided.
Within open and closed adoptions the rights and laws may vary. The rights for adoptees are
different than the rights for the birth parents. In several states, new laws are being passed in order
to give the adoptees information that they are looking for. Melanie Burney discusses in one of her

Fire and Ice by Robert Frost Essay example
Fire and Ice by Robert Frost
The poem Fire and Ice is a poem written by Robert Frost, and published in 1923. This is a nine line
poem:
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I have tasted of desire,
I hold those who favor ice.
But if I had to parish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice. This is one of Robert Frost simplest poems. When I initially read this poem, the
first thing that came to my mind was the biblical theory. In the second line Some say in ice
furthered my theory. In the Bible it is told that God destroyed Earth with water the first time he

I was thinking that Frost wanted to basically put a question on our minds, If you had to choose a
way to die would you choose fire or ice? In lines seven through nine, To say that destruction ice is
also great and would suffice . To me this is saying you would have to choose the lesser of the two
evils. Weighting the pros and cons of the two. Asking which one is better for you, a cold slow
death or a hot slow death. But in the end of the poem Frost is saying the no matter which one he
picks they are both going to give you the same results, death. To analyze the poem better I took
each word as if it symbolized a certain characteristic. In lines three and four, From what I ve
tasted of desire I hold those who favor fire it led me to believe that Frost was trying to use desire
as a metaphor to fire. Desire, can usually be used a negative or a positive manner depending on
the context it s use. In the poem I think that Frost is using it in a negative sense, because he is
uses words like end, perish, and destruction in the poem. Negatively the word desire can mean
the drive to win or receive something at any cost, the urge for power, which is very destructive.
In lines six and nine I think I know enough of hate to say that for destruction ice is also great and
would suffice . Saying that ice is a metaphor to hate. The word hate is worldly known to have a
negative condensation. Hate is also

Character Analysis Of Wonder Woman
In today s society, there are many different figures to look up to especially those who seem to
hold special powers like superheroes. Most superheroes are similar but there s one that is very
different from the rest and her name is Wonder Woman. She fights evil while still being a Woman
making her the ultimate herofor any young girl to look up to.
Although he didn t picture a woman in his role of a less masculine superman, the idea of Wonder
Woman was first originally created in 1941 by William Moulton Marston. She was used to be seen
as a World War II hero and warrior by having the strength and power of a man but the grace and
beauty of a lady. Wonder Woman fears nothing. She stands for justice, equality, and America.
(Arnold Forster). Since She was created off of honesty and feminism, she carries a whip that stands
for the truth and uses it against her enemies leaving her to be the preeminent hero.
Wonder Woman has many hero like qualities that make her such a marvelous leader. The very
first quality she possesses is her ambition. Her ambitious actions influence her ways of looking
and acting like a hero. The second major quality Wonder Woman holds is her nobility, because
she is selfless and strives to save the lives of anyone and everyone. Not only is she good at what
she does, but she also has a great passion for it. She always strives to be exceptional and treasures
the help she gives. The morals of Wonder Woman are set extremely high

Warren Bennett believes that the Older Waiter is a materialist. I agree that the Old Waiter is a
materialist and his views of the world as having nothing. According to Bennett s claim that the Old
waiter is a Materialist, the older waiter is unable to master such faith or confidence, and beyond
material there is nothing (Bennett 75). The definition reads the emphasis on material objects,
comforts, and considerations, with a disinterest in or rejection of spiritual, intellectual or cultural

Old Man is used as a conversation for the two waiters to contrast their views of the world. I agree
with Bennett that the Old Man is used as a topic of discussion. The two waiters are able to
discuss what they think of the old man. The old man and the young waiter both have
nothingness in their lives. In comparison to the younger waiter who actually has a wife and
wants to go home every night I m not lonely. I have a wife waiting in bed for me (Hemmingway).
The Old man is out drinking because he has no wife and has nothing in his life. Later we see the
reflective human condition in that the Older Waiter goes out drinking for himself, he relfects
because he has nothing too. I agree with Bennett that the younger waiter is in a hurry, he
actually has something, but unlike the two older men they prefer to stay out drinking to be
away from the darkness of their homes. I think that the importance of this getting old people
seem to lose their function. The young waiter is fresh and the life is waiting for him. In
comparison to the old men who are now old and reflect on their lives. They wished they could
have done something different or had a better life. It is important to have something and people
around to be happy. It is easy to look at others and judge that they do not belong. But like the old
man who lost his wife, the younger waiter had a wife and companionship. Hemmingway is getting

Understanding Learning and Memory with the Morris Water Maze
Abstract
The overstimulation of GABA inhibitory receptors in the hippocampus has been found to obstruct
spatial learning and memory. Ethanol was administered to male Swiss Webster mice in low and
high doses in order to test its pharmacological effects on memory. The Morris water maze
experiment was conducted as the experimental basis of understanding ethanol s capacity to inhibit
and/or suppress cognition, specifically memory in the hippocampus. Three individually marked,
male, 47 day old Swiss Webster mice per 5 groups were used to conduct the Morris water maze
experiment. The average time spent in the water amongst all 3 experimental groups decreased post
injection; with the 10% ethanol treated mice having the best memory recall. There were a few
factors that may have contributed to the surprising results of the experiment, such as a small sample
size and varying tolerance levels. Understanding the role of GABA and glutamate in cognition can
provide the foundation for further research and experimentation of memory formation and recall in
the hippocampus.
Introduction
Learning and memory have been topics of particular interest to neuroscientists and
neurophysiologists alike for several years and have become a phenomenon in scientific research and
behavioral neuroscience. The hippocampus is the control station of spatial learning and memory in

How Social Class Affected My Life
Social Class refers to a group of people with similar levels of wealth, influence, and status. As time
passes by many of us start to alienate from each other in terms of what classes we belong to and
what type of things we could afford and it also affects the social mobility people will experience,
because of that it affects a lot of us greatly and you start to realize how it affects you when it comes
to what type of neighborhood you live in or what type of work you do or where you go to school.
Social Classhas hugely affected me especially when it comes to where I live and where I grew up.
In Park slope in Brooklyn back then when I was a child our neighborhood consisted of the working
middle classwith people that actually made a wage that allowed them to live here and we had
many stores we could go to and relate and grow relationships with people there but as time went
on all that began to change. As I was getting older I didn t realize it but things were changing
slow like the stores we used to go to closed down and went for sale or they got bought out and
they were replaced with stores where many of the merchandise was expensive and hard to get,
also they were being torn down and replaced with beautiful apartments which I thought at the
time was cool because I was thinking it was getting a makeover. As time went on many of the
buildings I grew up seeing started getting turned into condominiums where the prices were
getting ridiculous and the rent started going up and I started seeing Caucasian people and I
realized these condos were being built with people who were part of the new middle class or had
money where they could afford to live in condos. When I got a job at a store called Earth s Basket
it was difficult to even get the job but as I started to work there I realized many of the things we
were selling were grossly overpriced when I could just go across the street and get the same thing
for a lower price and I got frustrated because the reason why those things were so overpriced were
because of the people that were moving into Park Slope and because of white people everything
was going up in price and when I see them paying for items that were like $10 where you could get
it somewhere else

There is no question that there are helpful and harmful attributes to elevation. The argument is
whether these effects are enough to cause an unfair advantage and are they dangerous enough to
warrant a rule to be made about it. There are many things that come into question when
addressing the affects elevation has on athletes such as: the effects of air resistance, air density,
low oxygen levels, and a weaker gravitational pull (Ward Smith). When people think of elevation
most people think of in the mountains or thousands of feet in the air. That is not the case. All of
these handicaps and issues can affect athletic events that are held in heights as low as one
thousand five hundred feet. At this altitude there is approximately 16% less oxygen in the air
(Altitude). At first glance this does not seem like a big difference but when a highly trained
athlete is competing this can be the difference between a loss or a win. Another measurement of
oxygen intake at elevation is the study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology in 1996,
trained and untrained cyclists were asked to undergo a Vo2max test, Vo2max is the rate of oxygen
consumed during the exercise test, at while at sea level and again at five hundred and eighty
meters. The result: the effects were negligible in the untrained group, but in the trained group
VO2max dropped by an average of 6.8% due to a fall in arterial oxygen saturation (Runner s

The Extinction Of Sharks
Sharks are one of the oldest living species on planet earth. Their earliest discovered fossils have
been dated back to over 420 million years old. Being one of the oldest species alive today, they
have undergone significant changes over time. The purpose of my research on these magnificent
creatures was to discover exactly why they ve been able to survive for so long, in contrary to
other species that have become extinct. Existing research shows that sharks have been able to
survive because of their ability to adapt to different environments. In 2013, a paleontological dig
site in southern France yielded fossilized teeth of a tiny sharkrelative, indicating that the fishescaped
catastrophic events by swimming to deeper oceans. This is an example of such adaptations that
sharks have... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sharks have been able to survive mass extinctions since the prehistoric era because of specific
characteristics they possess which give them advantages over other ocean species.
One of the traits that give shark species the advantage is their teeth. Sharks teeth vary in size, shape
and design to suit their many different environments. For example, long, narrow, needle like teeth
belong to sharks that prey on fish.

Effects Of The Sakoku Policy On Japan
Sakoku was the policy introduced to Japan in medieval times. Sakoku translates to a country in
chains or the lock up of a country . This policy proclaimed that no foreigner or Japanese could
enter or leave the country, without the threat of death. The Tokugawa Shogunate, under
Tokugawa Iemitsu, created this policy as well as an array of other edicts and policies to prevent
foreigners and Japanese alike from entering or leaving Japan. These were established and put into
action in 1633 1639 and remained in effect until 1853 when Matthew Perry and the Americans
forced the Japanese rulers to remove these laws. However, these laws did not entirely isolate Japan,
as some trade was allowed just under tight control. The Shoguns of medieval Japan... Show more

However, there were some unforeseen adverse effects. These effects have influenced and affected
Japan as a nation and culture, enriching the culture and lifestyle that we associate with Japan today.
Japan s isolation allowed them to develop their culture without the influence of other countries or
religions. The economy of Japan also flourished during the Sakoku period. The long period of
stability and peace was central to the economic boom. Moreover, the Japanese culture became
richer because of the sakoku. Without foreign influence, they further developed their own unique
culture. For example, traditional rituals and customs. The Japanese politics were also affected by
the sakoku; the emperor continued to appoint the shoguns to keep his subjects in and foreigners
out. These foreign traders and Christians were not welcomed by authorities. This was because they
were afraid they would cause an uprise in the feudal system. On the other hand, this isolation had a
negative effect because overtaxing and the rice payment continued. Sakoku also adversely affected
the environment; the most noticeable impact was widespread deforestation. Without the ability to
import wood, there was not enough for every person in the country. With an ever growing need for
natural products such as wood, the land was

Ontologies Used In Paper-Omics
In recent years, there has been an explosion of available data as the medical field has moved from
paper based to electronic health records (EHR), along with other big data sources such as digital
imaging, genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. To make this vast amount of data clinically
useful and to support in depth analysis to understand the molecular basis of diseases, methods and
tools are required that accurately integrate and link omics data with clinical information (1).
Phenotype is defined as the morphological, physiological and behavioral characteristics of an
individual while genotype is an individual s entire genetic makeup (2, 3). A phenotype terminology

The Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) facilitates the study of disease phenotype relationships
(5 7). The goal of the HPO is to provide accurate and precise clinical descriptions of diseases and
yield valuable clues to the molecular pathophysiology of a given patient (6, 8, 9). They are
especially important in cases of rare and undiagnosed diseases where clinical experts may use
different terms to describe similar clinical phenotypes (10).
The construction of ontologies requires content expertise and continuous accrual of new
knowledge, which is challenging to incorporate in a timely manner. The comprehensiveness of
ontology in a given domain is crucial for its usefulness. Thus, there is a need for systems that can
effectively and efficiently provide an assessment of domain coverage and potential new content for
inclusion. One of these mechanisms includes exploiting the information found in biomedical
resources like published literature and EHRs. Electronic health records have several advantages for
use in phenotyping such as cost efficiency and the availability of large amounts of clinical and
temporal information (11). Although structured data, such as International Classification of Disease
(ICD) codes, are useful controlled vocabularies, they are limited in detail as they are designed to
facilitate medical billing. On the other hand, the unstructured clinical data (e.g. consult notes,
history and physical notes, discharge summaries, and pathology reports) are rich in

Isolation In Disney Pixar s Film Brave
In the Disney Pixar animated film Brave, an unconventional princess, Merida, suffers from her
own isolation her entire life as she acts contrary to how traditional royalty should. However, her
rift between who she is and who she should be comes to a head when she puts a curse on her
mother. Not only does the movie take Merida on a journey of acceptance and learning, but forces
Merida s mother, the queen, to live in exile alone in her own mind as she is transformed into a
bear. The meaning of this mental isolation goes deeper than the surface themes of Brave, as
Elinor nearly loses her humanity, revealing the impact isolation can have on one s humanity and
how dire meaningful relationships are to a functioning society as a whole. Elinor s curse is first
shown to expose this idea of isolation equating to non humanity when she and Merida are hunting
for their first meal away from the castle. Shown to be unsuccessful in finding her own food as she
tries to eat poisonous berries, Elinor is characterized as someone who relies on... Show more content

One of humanity s essential qualities is to go against the grain, so to speak. Disney subtly shows
this ideal in every character from traditionalist Elinor entertaining Merida s childhood encounter
with will o the wisps to Merida s rebellion against her betrothal. So, in this way, Elinor s struggle to
go so against the grain to maintain her humanity is made more potent. If she had simply gone with
what nature told her, she would become a full fledged bear, unthinking and only relying on instinct.
This can be seen as a direct result of isolation as the lack of relationships with other higher thinking
humans takes away the need to rely on anything besides instincts; Elinor s mental isolation and
difficulty communicating with Merida removes her relationship, thus forcing her into a more
animalistic state to

Joyas Voladoras Essay
Brian Doyle s Joyas Voladoras first appeared in The American Scholar in 2004 and was later
selected for Best American Essays in 2005. Doyle s intended audience is the general population,
though his writing style attracts both the logical reader and the hopeless romantics who seek
metaphors pointing to love in any way. The beginning of the essayprovides insight to general
information about the hummingbird, which holds the smallest, capable, and fragile heartin the
world. He then explains the significance of the blue whale s heart with comparisons, indicating
that the blue whale holds a heart the size of a room. He ends his essay by expressing that a human

flowers a day. They can dive at sixty miles an hour. They can fly backward. They can fly more
than five hundred miles without pausing to rest. (273) are examples of how Brian Doyle uses the
factual support, as well as emotional triggers to provide a semblance of deep understanding between
the rhetorician and the audience.
His writing style is poetic, fluctuating between short and concise to long, organic, and flowing
sentence structures. For example, he utilizes short, concise sentence structures to imitate the quick
fluttering of the hummingbird s flying patterns: Consider the hummingbird for a long moment. A
hummingbird s heart beats ten times a second. A hummingbird s heart is the size of a pencil
eraser. A hummingbird s heart is a lot of the hummingbird (273) . In contrast to the short, concise
sentences, he uses the opposite effect when describing the heart of the blue whale. Instead, he
uses long sentences and traditional words that are separated by commas to force his readers to
read slowly and deliberately: . . . for next to nothing is known of the mating habits, travel patterns,
diet, social life, language, social structure, diseases, spirituality, wars, stories, despairs, and arts of
the blue whale (274). He also uses other methods to evoke feeling from his readers.

The supply of coffee is affected by weather conditions, and the health of coffee trees. According
to the article Coffee Industry to Adopt New Pricing Plans, the major players in the coffee
industry have seen profits decline because of over crowding of the market. An over crowded
market will give the coffee suppliers bargaining power. As Broadway Cafe demands high quality
coffee and there is no availability of substitutes for the coffee beans that Broadway Cafe use.
Therefore, the bargaining power of supplier increases. Threat of Substitute Products In the
premium foods and coffees industry, there are substitute products. According to Mary Coulter, the
best way to evaluate this threat is to ask whether other industries can satisfy the customer need
that this industry is satisfying (Coulter). Other beverage industries can satisfy the customer s need
for a drink, and other food industries can satisfy the customer s need to eat. There are obviously
good substitutes to Broadway products and the threat is high. This is why it is very important for
Broadway Cafe, to innovate and differentiate. By providing free Wi Fi in the Cafe and marketing
signature food products from the famous old recipes of Grandfather, Broadway Cafe can create
different image than its competitors. Rivalry Among Existing Competitors Porter s fifth force that

The Aspect Of Faux Furs In The Fashion Industry
The Aspect of Faux Furs in the Fashion Industry
Faux (f oh) Made in imitation; Fake
Faux furs in the fashion industry is the only moral substitute against real furs. Furs in the fashion
industry, is it moral? This has been an alarming question for quite some time. In response, the
creation of Faux furs has taken the industry by storm. For years, the bearing of fur in fashion was
associated with wealth, luxury, and glamour. With this perception of status, comes the perception of
faux furs. Associated with cheap, knock offs of furs; identified as a cheap imitation for the mass
markets. (Trew, 2012).
Faux furs have taken primary standpoint for use of fashion, and are a predominant political
statement in the industry. Designers are using faux fur in a proud statement against the fur
industry. Faux furs are being used as political protest statements, and have evolved into a
creature of their own from a life of being a tacky counterfeit. While faux fur has very recently
created a strong positive presence in fashion, it s debate has been dated back to the 19th century.
PETA s campaign of naked celebrities protested that they would rather go naked than wear fur ;
while David Bailey s Dumb Animals campaign for Greenpeace protested that It takes 40 dumb
animals to make a fur coat, but only one to wear them. These campaigns were some of the most
publicized and controversial and took place in a controversial time for the great fur debate, the
eighties and nineties. The protest

peripheral services such as its TV offerings as well as other attention holding services which
would keep consumers glued to its products. It needs premium original products and services

gaming. It is something of a farce that a company as big in the entertainment world as Sony has
only been able to provide one original TV show for its PlayStation providers whereas companies
like Netflix are spending upwards of $6 Billion on content development. Something Google has

My Experience At My Church
Have you ever felt like you were getting called upon to do something? I ve experienced this after
my dad passed away. I felt God calling me to serve my church. I started to become more active in
my church s faithful followers group. I felt God come into my life. I got the chance to go on this
amazing tripthat changed my life around.
I was sitting in my confirmation class on Sunday afternoon, when my teacher, Melanie, was talking
about all the upcoming events. She had an eye catching video about the National Catholic Youth
Conference or NCYC. The group from two years about created the video. They went into detail of
what we d get out of the trip. The thing that stuck out the most was the unique feeling of God s
presents. It was time to pay for our spot on this trip. The cost was $50, so you would have a seat
on the bus. This frightened me because I didn t know if I wanted to go for sure. I was going to
be around 200,000 other people, only seven being ones from my church. Preparing for this trip
was time consuming. We had to dedicate all our free time this summer to setting up fundraisers.
The trip was $510 per person. Our fundraising consisted of selling Pastry Puffins, bake sales, and
50/50 tickets. Also there were people who would donate so they could get a free pancake
breakfast out of the deal. We had meetings on top of meetings. We had to think of every possible
thing we could to make this trip possible. We discussed trading items for weeks. We finally figured

  • 2. Annie Sullivan Philosophy A teacher s role in the class room and values reflected modeling Anne Sullivan 3843 Rivier College Abstract Anne Sullivan became a teacher after facing learning difficulties, she was sent to the Perkins School for the blind, after finding out as a child she was forming blindness at the age of four. Anne was top of her class and was taught by the best teachers at that school. With their strict and disciplined way of teaching in the classroom she wanted to take that style and use it to help others. One of her students was a child born deaf and blind; Helen Keller s family had a struggle finding answers, until they stumbled upon The Perkins School seeking help for Helen. Sullivan ... By doing that Anne would be able to be one on one and hands on teach her brail, and have her in an appropriate classroom setting bringing her success. Anne saw how smart, determined and independent Helen was and had nothing but high hopes for her, with Sullivan s help she knew with her right teaching Helen would be nothing but successful. In the movie the Miracle Worker, when she was able to have Helen in an environment where she was capable of learning; she proceeded to start by teaching her the alphabet. By taking Helen s hand and forcing her to feel her fingers making letter then associating it with the object. Annie s first act was to thrust a doll into the hands of her pupil. When I had played with it a little while, recalled Helen Keller years later, Miss Sullivan slowly spelled into my hand the word d o l l. I was at once interested in this finger play ... I did not know [for several weeks] that I was spelling a word or even that words existed. (Review. (1957). Time, 69(7), 42.) This got her to begin understanding what Anne was doing, that being a good example of John Dewey s theory that concepts are reflective thought and action. • 3. Acknowledging History s Mistakes of Blackface Minstrelsy To consider something to be forgotten, good or bad, history loses its definition and becomes distorted with fiction. If you can t acknowledge history s mistakes you can t develop and grow as a society. To forget blackface minstrelsy would mean to forget such a vast part of early American history and a part of the early development American popular culture. You could say to a more extreme extent it would be like the western world forgetting slavery of the native Africans or even the Spanish forgetting how they single handedly caused the demise of the Inca civilization. Even though these parts of history could be forgotten because of there matter of sensitively. We as a society must acknowledge our history in all its flaws no matter how sensitive or uncomfortable the subject is to people today. It was something that helped culturally raise a nation that didn t know better. As tasteless as blackfaceappears by todays standard it still does hold a influence on the American entertainment industry and how black characters are portrayed in mainstream films and other entertainment. Even through blackface has not been part of American entertainment for some time now there is still a wide use of certain characters and stereotypes that show links to the early entertainment. So even thought something like blackface is viewed racist and old fashion its still holds a firm foundation in American entertainment. The history of Blackface minstrelsy does not just lead back to western ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Given the rate at which smartphone are penetrating the market and component prices are declining by 2015 there will be, at least, 2 billion smart mobile devices in use globally. (Kenney, 2011). Smartphone sales will be driven by two main factors, BI Intelligence says: Replacement of nearly 5 billion dumb phones with smartphones (smartphones currently make up only 10% of handsets worldwide) Price declines. The average price of a smartphone will drop from about $315 last year to $200 over the next several years This will obviously have a huge impact on the mobile Internet economy, which is already exploding from the growth of smartphone penetration in the past few years. Some other highlights from the report: Smartphone unit sales will grow at nearly a 30% compound annual growth rate over the next five years Smartphones will represent about two thirds of all mobile phone purchases by 2016, Smartphones will be a $320 billion market by 2016. Competition Situation At the time Apple recognized the need for a handheld mobile device the market players were a few and mainly business users. This explains the strong market share RIM had. Palm on its hand also was also somewhat popular but having limitations in terms of usability and software, deprived the brand from gaining significant position. Sophocles Euripides Bacchae Commentary on Bacchae Paul Woodruff s translation of the Greek play Euripides Bacchae tells the story of the primary character Dionysus, who is the son of the Greek God Zeus. Dionysus is out to seek his revenge on his mother s sisters, his grandfather Cadmus, and also his cousin Pentheus because they have denied that he, Dionysuswas born a God. Also important in this play is Pentheus who was made King of Thebes as a young teenage boy by his grandfather who is also Cadmus. Pentheus learns of Dionysus trying to change order in Thebes and Pentheus is determined to stop this form happening at all costs. Would any true God make a mother kill her child in the manner in which Agave did just so a point could be proven? As for Pentheus being misunderstood, one could say that Pentheus is a teenage kid who was just trying to rule Thebes the best he knew how, or what he thought at the time was right. The play does not go into the depths of Pentheus background, childhood, or what his exact issue with women is. His dislike, disgust, and annoyance with women leaves me as a reader to wonder if this is just a phase of teenage puberty Pentheus does not know how to deal with, or is it a more deep seeded issue such as, could he have been sexually abused by his mother or perhaps one of his aunts as a child? The expected sizes are indicated on the gel with mCherry 737 bp, TtrpC 589 bp, noxA 1976 bp, mssD 3097 bp and PgpdA 2338 bp. After gel extraction and purification mCherry was shown to be of very low concentration 13.5 ng/L by the nanodrop. This was not sufficient for successful Gibson assembly of the plasmid. Candy transformed E. festucae with either cdc24 EGFP or cdc24PH EGFP and then three rounds of nuclear purification were carried out to increase the proportion of hyphae that contain the construct. Filamentous fungi contain multinuclear hyphae compartments which means that not all nuclei within the fungi will contain the construct. Subculturing was carried out on media containing antibiotic to purify transformants from non transformants. There was fifty independent transformants for each cdc24 EGFP and cdc24 PH EGFP. From these transformants 34 cdc24 EGFP and 23 cdcPH EGFP contained a sufficient DNAconcentration following crude DNA extraction from all plated E. festucae. PCR was used to screen individual transformants for the presence of the band sized 2338 bp showing that the transformants contains the construct. Unfortunately, a negative control was not included which makes these results difficult to interpret but since some do not contain a band it can be assumed that contamination is unlikely to have interfered with these results. This shows that the construct is present in many of the individual transformants which allows continuation of this project where an attempt to visualise the proteins can be carried out. • 10. La Hacienda Musa Case Study La Hacienda Musa1 La Hacienda Musa was a long way from Leuven, Belgium. But for Maria Keller, the transition was as natural as it could be. She had spent twenty years in Leuven studying banana genetics at the Catholic University of Leuven s Laboratory of Tropical Crops, the world center of banana research. She had learned about the challenges the banana growing industry faced from a variety of diseases, why bananas seemed to be especially susceptible, and how difficult it is to develop new strains of the world s most popular fruit. But after two decades of study, Maria was ready for something new. She did her homework, packed her few possessions, and headed to her newly purchased banana plantation in Costa Rica. To say that La Hacienda ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The prices for bananas were also uncertain. The price (paid to the grower) for conventional bananas was normally distributed with a mean of $220 per tonne and a standard deviation of $28 per tonne. Because large yields for La Hacienda Musa tended to occur at the same time as large yields from other banana plantations, large yields tended to correspond to lower market prices. Thus the market price was negatively correlated with Maria s yields for conventionally grown bananas, having a correlation coefficient of 0.50. Organic bananas would sell at a premium over conventional bananas, but how much this premium would be was uncertain. Maria thought the percentage premium would have a lognormal distribution with a mean of 15% and standard deviation of 2.5%. (A premium of 5%, for example, meant that the price paid for organic bananas would be 5% more than the price for conventional bananas.) This premium depended mainly on market factors how many growers were in the organic business, consumer demand for organic produce and was independent of all of other uncertainties Maria faced. Finally, the costs associated with growing bananas were uncertain and approximately normally distributed with a mean of $1800 per hectare and a standard deviation of $300 per hectare. Because the uncertainty in growing costs was primarily due to labor rates and water use, the growing costs were identical under the two growing methods. These costs were uncorrelated with the other uncertainties. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. The Successful State Intervention For South Korea Essay Koral Zazueta PSCI 241 Essay #1 The successful state intervention can be identified by different methods of state intervention aimed at promoting industrialization. Kohli claims that cohesive capitalist states have been the most effective in fostering industrialization, specifically in South Korea, neo patrimonial states being least effective, which existed in Nigeria. The fragmented multiclass states India, is in between (Kohli, Atul. 2004). Ultimately, the role of different types of colonialismand state intervention effects state development in the developing world. Kohli argues that the state capacity of India, Nigeria and South Korea have been molded by their different colonial experiences, but rapid economic growth is enhanced by a more forceful state intervention. According to Kohli, successful state intervention depends on market reinforcement policies and whether or not support of profit for private investors and cooperation between the private sector and the state exists (Kohli, Atul. 2004). While this method did exist and work for South Korea, Botswana experienced a different type of state intervention with minimal colonial influence. The role of the British in Botswana was minimal compared to the Japanese s role in South Korea. Botswana s precolonial institutions endured throughout colonialism and after their independence. Despite the constraints on political elites the institutions placed were supported and were imperative in promoting economic success ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the late 1920 s, Xavier Cugat formed an orchestra that specialized in Latin American music and opened at the Coconut Grove in Los Angeles and later played at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. By the end of the decade he was recognized as having the outstanding Latin orchestra of the day. During this time, the intellectual movement known as Afrocubanismo, a sort of mass relization of the value of African culture (especially in the Caribbean), gave roots to traditional rumba. When this afrocubanismo movement came along, it helped open the doors to African rooted dancing and ways of expression. Critical Analysis On Spanish Horror Films Shannon Stone 12 11 14 FEA 460 Spanish Cinema Final Paper Critical Analysis on Spanish Horror Films From the late 1960 s to the early 1970 s Spain rose as one of the leading countries to dominate the horror film genre. Struggling under a brutal and confining dictatorship for much of the 20th century, the horror genre of Spanish cinema took awhile to come together. During the difficult and challenging days of General Franco s regime a limited series of horror films were produced, mainly for the English market. In the later years under Franco, hundreds of horror films were released. All were identified for their violence, eroticism, and unrestrained cinematography. Recently, 21st century Spanish horror films, such as The Devil s Backbone and The Others, tell chilling ghost stories that go beyond horror genre and successfully mix suspense, horror, and coming of age techniques, during the harsh wartime, using sound, lighting, editing, and innovative camera work. After General Franco s regime fell, a new wave of young directors such as Bigas Luna and Pedro Almodovar basked in their newfound freedom of expression to produce films that were unrestricted and independent. In the 21st century, a more mature Spanish film industry had returned to the horror genre in a big way. The Pastor And Teacher As A Gift And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ... (Ephesians 4:11 12). This passage in Ephesians establishes the ability to be a pastor and teacher as a gift. The pastoris often looked at as the face of a local church. This is evidenced by the fact that when people are discussing a church, someone will almost certainly ask the question: Who is the pastor of that church? . The pastor plays an important part in a local church. He is generally looked to as the leader, the head teacher, and the lead counselor to a specific local assembly. But a pastor s not just the leader of a local church. It s important to examine how the Bibledefines a pastor. The word used for pastor in Ephesians 4 literally means shepherd. The same word is used in 1 Peter 5 when Peter instructs the elders to shepherd the flock of God. For this reason, we can know that role of elder and overseer are synonymous with pastor. They are interchangeable terms. Elders were appointed by apostles to be in charge of a local church (Acts 14:23). This is what Jesus meant when he told Peter to shepherd My sheep (John 21:16). Shepherds, naturally, were in charge of the sheep they tended. They feed them, guide them, care for, and retrieve their sheep. The United Nations High Commission For Human Rights Essay Introduction The Office of the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights (OHCHR) defines Human Rights as, rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and indivisible. Human rights are a set of norms or standards of behaviour that are intended to protect us in order for us to live fully. They belong to everyone by virtue of us being human. The concept of Human Rights gained prominence in the 17th century in Europe but its roots can be traced to ancient times. Most cultures created their own traditions and responsibilities to protect members of those communities and ensure a better living. Murder, rape and other violations were punished in various ways by the different cultures. The use of human rights in politics was realized in different documents such as the French declaration on the rights of man and citizen (1789), the English Bill of Rights (1689) and the US constitution Bill of rights (1791) and all encompass human rights. However, these were not universal laws but national laws. Moreover, they promoted discrimination of different groups plus slavery. Human rights have become universal and their history is in many struggles all over the world. Those opposed to slavery, commonly referred to as abolitionists, ended ... Adoption is a complex process that ultimately results in an awaiting family receiving the baby they have hoped for. Thousands of children are placed in an adoptive family every year. The child, from the moment they are handed into the arms of their new family, will grow up just like any other but their lives will also be forever changed. The cooperation of both the biological and adoptive parents is key to nourishing the child and to maintaining that beneficial relationship. Closed adoption is almost the polar opposite to open adoption. Closed adoption is when the birth parents seal their personal information and have no personal contact with the adoptive parents or the child. The adoptive parents and the child cannot gain access to any personal identifying information unless the biological parents unseal the records or the child meets the age required. This form of adoption is extremely restrictive and often leaves the child wondering about their past and why they were adopted. Most children are left with various questions that cannot be answered due to maintaining the privacy of the birth parents. Although closed adoption can keep the adoptee and the adoptive parents safe, if the birth parents were dangerous in any way, most children have to wait until they are adults to search for information that may still be restricted. Some birth parents eventually unseal the adoption files but request to not be contacted. Closed adoption can have as many restrictions as the birth parents decided. Within open and closed adoptions the rights and laws may vary. The rights for adoptees are different than the rights for the birth parents. This is a nine line poem: Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I have tasted of desire, I hold those who favor ice. But if I had to parish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice. This is one of Robert Frost simplest poems. In lines seven through nine, To say that destruction ice is also great and would suffice . To me this is saying you would have to choose the lesser of the two evils. Weighting the pros and cons of the two. Asking which one is better for you, a cold slow death or a hot slow death. But in the end of the poem Frost is saying the no matter which one he picks they are both going to give you the same results, death. To analyze the poem better I took each word as if it symbolized a certain characteristic. In lines three and four, From what I ve tasted of desire I hold those who favor fire it led me to believe that Frost was trying to use desire as a metaphor to fire. Desire, can usually be used a negative or a positive manner depending on the context it s use. In the poem I think that Frost is using it in a negative sense, because he is uses words like end, perish, and destruction in the poem. Negatively the word desire can mean the drive to win or receive something at any cost, the urge for power, which is very destructive. In lines six and nine I think I know enough of hate to say that for destruction ice is also great and would suffice . Saying that ice is a metaphor to hate. Although he didn t picture a woman in his role of a less masculine superman, the idea of Wonder Woman was first originally created in 1941 by William Moulton Marston. She was used to be seen as a World War II hero and warrior by having the strength and power of a man but the grace and beauty of a lady. Wonder Woman fears nothing. She stands for justice, equality, and America. (Arnold Forster). Nwokochah BIO 482L Lab Report 18 October 2015 Understanding Learning and Memory with the Morris Water Maze Abstract The overstimulation of GABA inhibitory receptors in the hippocampus has been found to obstruct spatial learning and memory. Ethanol was administered to male Swiss Webster mice in low and high doses in order to test its pharmacological effects on memory. The Morris water maze experiment was conducted as the experimental basis of understanding ethanol s capacity to inhibit and/or suppress cognition, specifically memory in the hippocampus. Three individually marked, male, 47 day old Swiss Webster mice per 5 groups were used to conduct the Morris water maze experiment. The average time spent in the water amongst all 3 experimental groups decreased post injection; with the 10% ethanol treated mice having the best memory recall. There were a few factors that may have contributed to the surprising results of the experiment, such as a small sample size and varying tolerance levels. Understanding the role of GABA and glutamate in cognition can provide the foundation for further research and experimentation of memory formation and recall in the hippocampus. Introduction Learning and memory have been topics of particular interest to neuroscientists and neurophysiologists alike for several years and have become a phenomenon in scientific research and behavioral neuroscience. Social Classhas hugely affected me especially when it comes to where I live and where I grew up. In Park slope in Brooklyn back then when I was a child our neighborhood consisted of the working middle classwith people that actually made a wage that allowed them to live here and we had many stores we could go to and relate and grow relationships with people there but as time went on all that began to change. As I was getting older I didn t realize it but things were changing slow like the stores we used to go to closed down and went for sale or they got bought out and they were replaced with stores where many of the merchandise was expensive and hard to get, also they were being torn down and replaced with beautiful apartments which I thought at the time was cool because I was thinking it was getting a makeover. As time went on many of the buildings I grew up seeing started getting turned into condominiums where the prices were getting ridiculous and the rent started going up and I started seeing Caucasian people and I realized these condos were being built with people who were part of the new middle class or had money where they could afford to live in condos. When I got a job at a store called Earth s Basket it was difficult to even get the job but as I started to work there I realized many of the things we were selling were grossly overpriced when I could just go across the street and get the same thing for a lower price and I got frustrated because the reason why those things were so overpriced were because of the people that were moving into Park Slope and because of white people everything was going up in price and when I see them paying for items that were like $10 where you could get it somewhere else ... There is no question that there are helpful and harmful attributes to elevation. The argument is whether these effects are enough to cause an unfair advantage and are they dangerous enough to warrant a rule to be made about it. There are many things that come into question when addressing the affects elevation has on athletes such as: the effects of air resistance, air density, low oxygen levels, and a weaker gravitational pull (Ward Smith). When people think of elevation most people think of in the mountains or thousands of feet in the air. That is not the case. All of these handicaps and issues can affect athletic events that are held in heights as low as one thousand five hundred feet. At this altitude there is approximately 16% less oxygen in the air (Altitude). At first glance this does not seem like a big difference but when a highly trained athlete is competing this can be the difference between a loss or a win. Another measurement of oxygen intake at elevation is the study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology in 1996, trained and untrained cyclists were asked to undergo a Vo2max test, Vo2max is the rate of oxygen consumed during the exercise test, at while at sea level and again at five hundred and eighty meters. They are especially important in cases of rare and undiagnosed diseases where clinical experts may use different terms to describe similar clinical phenotypes (10). Furs in the fashion industry, is it moral? This has been an alarming question for quite some time. In response, the creation of Faux furs has taken the industry by storm. For years, the bearing of fur in fashion was associated with wealth, luxury, and glamour. With this perception of status, comes the perception of faux furs. Associated with cheap, knock offs of furs; identified as a cheap imitation for the mass markets. (Trew, 2012). The costs of the program would be minimal since it would primarily be used for consults to product improvement after initial prototypes or for ideas for new developments. A big problem with its gaming system is that compared to other big name consoles like the XBOX, its product does not fully utilize it computing power thereby limiting its capabilities. As consumer needs change the console has gone from being just a simple gaming product to an in home entertainment system and Sony should push it to it max. This can be said for its mobile offerings are well as the company fails to optimize its products for premium performance; a fault which has led to dwindling mobile sales. The company needs to develop its peripheral services such as its TV offerings as well as other attention holding services which would keep consumers glued to its products. It needs premium original products and services offered through its devices, thereby tying in at least two of its big sectors; entertainment and gaming. It is something of a farce that a company as big in the entertainment world as Sony has only been able to provide one original TV show for its PlayStation providers whereas companies like Netflix are spending upwards of $6 Billion on content development. Something Google has done very well is use the data it receives from its product offerings to continuously develop and advance technology for its consumers. Sony needs to learn to do this as well ... • 53. My Experience At My Church Have you ever felt like you were getting called upon to do something? I ve experienced this after my dad passed away. I felt God calling me to serve my church. I started to become more active in my church s faithful followers group. I felt God come into my life. I got the chance to go on this amazing tripthat changed my life around. I was sitting in my confirmation class on Sunday afternoon, when my teacher, Melanie, was talking about all the upcoming events. She had an eye catching video about the National Catholic Youth Conference or NCYC. The group from two years about created the video. They went into detail of what we d get out of the trip. The thing that stuck out the most was the unique feeling of God s presents. It was time to pay for our spot on this trip. The cost was $50, so you would have a seat on the bus. This frightened me because I didn t know if I wanted to go for sure. I was going to be around 200,000 other people, only seven being ones from my church. Preparing for this trip was time consuming. We had to dedicate all our free time this summer to setting up fundraisers. The trip was $510 per person. Our fundraising consisted of selling Pastry Puffins, bake sales, and 50/50 tickets. Also there were people who would donate so they could get a free pancake breakfast out of the deal. We had meetings on top of meetings. We had to think of every possible thing we could to make this trip possible. We discussed trading items for weeks. We finally figured ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
