 Representation refers to the aspects of reality
such as people, places, objects, events, cultural
identities
 The use of representation allows the audience
to decode the signs and signifiers that the
producer has encoded in the film.
Why is representation
important?
Costume:
For this screenshot, the character is
shirt less because he is being
interrogated
Role:
The role for this character is a drug
grower for a gang.
Appearance:
The character seems to be physically
built.
The character also seems to be a
young adult around 20 – 25 years old
The character must be cuffed because
his hands are at the back so he wont
be able to go any where.
Costume:
The character is wearing a police
uniform
- This is identified from his badge.
Role:
The role for this character a police
officer. For this scene, he is being
tortured from one of the members of
a gang
Appearance:
The character is covered with blood
He is taped around the chair to show
that he isn’t going anywhere.
• The similarity of the two characters is that both of them are being
interrogated and they are also both positioned in the middle of the
frame. A victim being interrogated is typical in a thriller genre
because it shows violent actions are used.
• Another similarity is that the acting of the characters are the same.
They both look down and not looking at the camera. This shows
that the two characters don’t have any power. Also the location of
the victims are similar, both of them are in an isolated area away
from the public.
• The difference of the two characters is that the victim from our film
is a drug producer and in Reservoir Dogs is a police officer. These
two characters are opposites because one commits crime and the
other prevents people on committing crime.
Costume:
For this screenshot, the character is
wearing a shirt and tie possibly
showing that he has finished work.
Role:
The role for this character is a
detective who is working on a case to
find a missing person.
Appearance:
The character is a black ethnic man
who is in his 30s
He seems to be very stressed and also
looks very serious
Costume:
The character is wearing a jacket,
bullet proof vest and smart clothing
underneath the vest.
Role:
The role of the character is a detective
who is hunting a serial killer who
uses the seven deadly sins as his way
of operating his murders
Appearance:
The character’s facial expressions
shows that he is angry and serious.
He has wounds in his forehead which
could mean that he was injured
recently
• The similarity of the two characters is that both of them are wearing
formal clothing which shows that they are important and dominant
in the movie. They show their power and dominance through their
posture. The character in out film stands up firm and the character
in Se7en is side on but having a gun pointing at someone makes
him look more powerful because he has a weapon.
Costume:
He is wearing a bandana over his
neck
Also he is wearing casual clothing
Role:
The role for this character is a drug
grower for a gang.
Appearance:
this characters seems to be between
the age of 28 – 30 years old
Asian ethnicity
He has a serious and violent look.
Costume:
He is a well dressed man
- Wearing a suit
Role:
The role for this character is a gang
leader
Appearance:
The character is highly respected
from the group
He sits at the end of the table which
shows his hierarchy
The character also seems to be
between the age of 50 – 60 years old
• The similarity of the two characters is that they have power. This is
shown from having a low angle camera shot from our film and also
the character takes up most of the frame from this shot. The
character in Gangster Squad shows his power by being placed in
the middle of everyone and thus the audience can see that all the
other characters are facing at him.
• The difference of the two characters is that the character in our film
wears casual clothing which implies that he is secretive and tries to
blend in with everyone. However, the character in Gangster Squad
wears a suit which demonstrate his wealth.
