2. Representation
• Representation is important because it is about decoding different
layers of fact or fiction. Audiences decode signs and signifiers that
producers have encoded in their work. Barthes theory of Semiotics
represents signs and symbols used to decode film.
3. Character 1 – The
Photographer
We have represented the character of the photographer
firstly by using a female character, contrasting the usually
suspected male lead. We chose our lead to be of White
British ethnicity, with a higher social class compared to the
other characters in our film. This is not what the audience
will expect compared to other thriller films, I think it
contrasts the usual idea of a strong male lead with a big
personality.
We used our Mise en scene of costume and makeup to
convey this. Keeping the outfit minimal, but simple and the
makeup and nails also stripped back and minimal. This could
both challenge and follow the usual conventions of a thriller
genre as some main characters in thriller films have quite
stand out features, or contrastingly, quite minimal features.
We challenged the expectations of the thriller genre by
choosing a female lead. Usually male characters are seen as
the lead in a thriller film, this s because of their social
standing and characteristics, where as females are usually
seen as the vulnerable characters in thriller films.

4. Character 2 – The Victim
We have represented the character of the victim firstly by using a
female character, contributing to the commonly used female
thriller film victim. We chose our victim to be of White British
ethnicity, with a lower social class compared to the main
character in our film. I think this will be what the audience expect
as it is common in thriller films to have a female victim as
naturally they are more vulnerable compared to males.
We used our Mise en scene of costume and makeup to convey
our characters vulnerability. Keeping the outfit minimal, we chose
to keep it similar to what a teenage girl would wear, and like
many of our female audience members would wear, I think this
will help audience members relate to the victim . This follows the
usual conventions of a thriller genre as some victims in thriller
films tend to be ‘ordinary people’ so that the audience can relate
to them.
We followed the expectations of the thriller genre by choosing a
female victim. Usually female characters are seen as the victim in
a thriller film, such as ‘The Call’ as females are mostly seen as
‘vulnerable people’, therefore making a more tense film.

The Victim featured in our film is similar to that of the victim used in the
thriller ‘The Call’, This is because they are both in the same age range,
teenage, both have similar features of mise en scene represented by
them, such as similar lighting used throughout the film and similar
costume and makeup, they are both of a similar social group and
