This document summarizes the representation of different social groups in a film:
The villain/murderer is portrayed as a dark, evil, and mysterious character by hiding in darkness and wearing dark clothing. The detective is depicted as a professional, strong-willed, and determined man through his late night work and outburst. The victim, Jane, seems innocent through texting her boyfriend and wearing smart work clothes, highlighting her innocence. The assistant to the detective is shown as reluctant to bother his intimidating superior and also aims to appear professional.
2. A social group is a collection of people who
interact with each other and share similar
characteristics and a sense of unity. A social
category is a collection of people who do not
interact but who share similar characteristics
3. A primary group offers a great deal of intimacy.
A secondary group is more formal and less
personal.
4. This character is appealing to the social group of a villain/murderer. The key
representations of this social group are being dark, evil and mysterious. We
portrayed the murderer as a dark character by the fact he almost hides in the
darkness and putting a black distorted filter over the top of the image when
the villain was on screen. The character shares many similarities to the villain
of the film Face Off played by Nicolas Cage. He wears dark black clothes
which adds the mystery of the character and the evil presence due to the fact
black often shows people as dark and evil. It is also a code and convention
we chose to take on board as the evil characters wear dark clothing,
revealing the fact they're playing a dark character to the audience. The
murderer in a film is often seen as a male and is very rarely a women due to
the fact males are presented as a dominant gender.
5. The detective represents the social of the law enforcers and who bring justice to
the world. To represent this social group, we had to ensure the character
came across as a professional, strong willed and determined man as they are
the main aspects of this social group. We portrayed him as determined by
thee fact he was working through the night and the scene where he loses his
cool and lashes out. The detective would have to wear smart clothes suitable
for someone who holds that much responsibility. The detective in my film is
wearing a black jacket which is shared by the picture on the right showing a
detective from the film Se7en but remains smart enough to carry out the job.
We decided it was suitable for a male detective as the profession tends to be
male dominated. In our film, we emphasised the fact we tried to do as many
shots in the film at eye level as the audience should feel as one with this
character.
6. Jane represents the social group of a victim and is often seen to be
living a good life up to the point where she is murdered. The
character had to come across as innocent as possible to fully
represent the social group. We achieved this by the close up of the
phone texting her boyfriend. Jane, the victim, is played by a woman.
We felt this was suitable as a dominant man is often seen killing an
innocent women. This is shared by the film above, Se7en, where the
innocent women is murdered. The character is wearing smart
clothes as she is leaving her work place but also shows the fact she
takes pride in her appearance, further adding to the idea of
innocence.
7. The social group being represented is assistants who work under a
more respected person with more authority. The key part when
representing this social group was making the assistant come across
as someone who was reluctant to bother the head detective. The
assistant is intimidated by his head and this was shown by the fact
he leaves the room as soon as possible. Also he had to come across
as professional. The main detective has an assistant who is also
adopting a smarter as he is working under the main detective. This
was influenced by the assistant detective from the series True
Detective. Once again this character is played by a male as it is a
male dominated profession.
