[object Object],Crime is usually the centre of narrative in thriller films. Crimes such as murder, robberies, rape and kidnapping are commonly used and the criminal is often being chased or searched for. In our opening sequence a girl was attacked and raped by two young males. The theme of crime is then carried on throughout the story as the victim seeks revenge. One way in which we developed the crime convention was by portraying the criminal in a positive way and getting the audience to empathise with her. Thriller films also often have themes of identity and revenge which are both used in our thriller. The character in our film has a secret identity as a famous serial killer who is set out to kill all evil men.
The conventions used in the opening sequence indicated to the audience what the sub-genre of our thriller was. Most of the audience were able to understand the plot of the film and guessed that the victim was going out to get revenge. They recognised that it was a crime-thriller/ action-thriller.
Our film uses quite a typical character for a thriller film. Our character is strong, confident, vicious and ruthless. However it is atypical for this kind of character to be a female and is also atypical for the killer to be viewed as the ‘good guy’.
The editing in our film consists of many features commonly used in other thriller films. A few shots were edited in slow motion in this case to amplify violence and the impact it had on the victim. We also included a series of flashbacks in our opening sequence, which are also quite common in thrillers. The ways in which our titles are used to establish expectations about the atmosphere of the film are the same as in existing thriller films. A red font was used on a black background so that it would stand out. The font colour indicates danger and could also be seen as a connotation of the blood. The titles used in a thriller opening sequence are intentionally used to reflect the aspects of the protagonist’s or antagonist’s psychological state. In our titles the red colour is used to signify the protagonist’s hate and anger that she has. The animation used for the text is aggressive. For example the titles rattle and jump out at the screen. The animations are also used to signify the character’s anger.
Many thriller films use low-key lighting to create a clear contrast between light and dark areas of the set and consequently a clear contrast between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ characters or events. The low-key lighting also creates a dark and very tense atmosphere and indicates that something bad is going to happen. We used low-key lighting in the series of flashbacks of a girl being attacked and raped. We also used red lighting to create a sense of danger.
The villains were dressed in hooded jackets and towered over the victim. Their faces could not be seen and were in the dark. This vilified their characters even more and created more tension. The spotlight was on the victim to keep the focus on the pain and distress she was going through.
In many action thrillers they show a sequence in which the protagonist or antagonist is seen getting dressed and getting their weapons and gadgets together. The shots used are usually close ups to focus on one area of the costume at a time and the whole costume is not revealed until the character is finished dressing. I used this technique while filming my opening sequence. For example I showed the character’s shoes first, and then cut to a shot of their face, then to a close up of doing up their jacket. The whole outfit was later revealed in an establishing tilt-up shot.
In a film the emotional colouring of the music reinforces the mood. The music we chose to use had quite an aggressive tone to it so it fitted in quite well. The lyrics to the song were also relevant to the film: “I lick the gun when I’m done ‘cause I know that revenge is sweet”. The song also has a theme of 'girl power’ to it and also emanates confidence which can be associated with the protagonist. The song we used is new and by a famous singer called Rihanna which may attract our target audience because it is popular music.
The narrative of our film has been influenced by two other thriller films. One called ‘Monster’ (2003) directed by Patty Jenkins. The film is about a female prostitute who becomes a serial killer. This gave us the idea to have a female character that becomes a serial killer. The other film that influenced the narrative of our film is called ‘Hard Candy’ directed by David Slade (2005). In this film a fourteen year-old girl meets a 32 year-old man on the internet. She later meets up with him and proposes to go to his house. The girl, who suspects him of being a paedophile, plans to expose him. She tied him up to a chair and tortured him. We created a character similar to the girl in this film. Our character is a teenager that tortures and kills evil men that take advantage of females. The difference between our character is that she was previously attacked and raped and so sets out to seek revenge.
The other conventions used in our film were not influenced by any particular film. They were general conventions that we observed in many thriller films.

Our film does not establish much narrative in the opening sequence because we wanted to create enigma and keep the audience wondering. This was common in a lot of thriller film openings such as ‘Seven’ and ‘Fight Club’. In our opening sequence a girl is seen walking into a school toilet where she goes in to change out of her uniform. She is dressed up in a pair of heels, skinny jeans, a blazer and leather gloves but the audience doesn’t know where she is going. There are also a series of flashbacks which show the girl getting attacked by two boys. The title of the film: ‘The Beauty Of A Killer’ suggests that she is going to seek revenge.
