Evaluation Question 2
2. Class and Status.
Class and status are two very different things. To
have a high status you don’t have to be high
class. This is seen in films like ‘Ill Manors’ where
the cockney drug addicts rule the streets. Our
main character has an East End accent and
clearly has the highest status in the scene, he is
always at a higher level and the ‘boss’ character,
with a cockney accent, begs him to kill him. This
is seen though the upshot used and also the
various shots only showing his body parts which
highlights that he is close to the camera for
example – his hand grabbing the glass and bat in
the shot. This is a big part of the thriller genre.
The battle of status between characters can
always be seen in the genre of thriller.
3. Age.
The element of age in the shot also highlights
status. The young girl is immediately sat on a
lower level with the man above her and the
camera looking down on her. We had her
clutching the big teddy bear to highlight her
insecurity. Also the short amount of time she has
on camera again highlights her lack of status in
this scene as her prevalence is low. Also, she is
looking up at the other characters highlighting her
lack of importance in society.
4. Mise-en-scene.
The use of the bloodied bat appearing in the
shots highlights the underworlds use of violence
to sort things rather than the modern way of
‘talking.’ The genre of thriller always has violence,
however what stops it from being a horror or
action, is we don’t see this act of violence. It is left
to the imagination. It highlights that whilst they
may have status amongst each other through
violence, their status is extremely low compared
to those who are educated, etc.
5. Race.
The use of race is very important in the clip. The
main protagonist is black however we never fully see
his face due to the blurring of his face in the
foreground of the shot. This highlights his mystery
and whilst we know he is the protagonist, the while
male still gets more prevalence highlighting that
even though the film shows the black character with
higher status, the use of editing still shows that the
white male has the power overall.
