Ralph Waldo Emerson s Ideology Of Self Identity
In the essay, Self Reliance, Ralph Waldo Emerson s ideology of self identity is impractical today
because the media has hindered society from developing our true identities. The use of social media is
ruining this generation s real life social skills. According to Social Media Today, an online community
for professionals, The amount of time people spend on social media is constantly increasing. Teens
now spend up to nine hours a day on social platforms, while 30% of all time spent online is now
allocated to social media interaction. Texting or online communications does not allow people to truly
express themselves for who they truly are. There is a loss of social and personal development
communicating through social media. For instance, people online are unable to use body language,
tone, voice and facial expressions through a text. An article on The Telegraph, pointed out that One in
four people spend more time socialising online, using sites such as Facebook, than they do in person,
according to research. The study also found that even when there is an opportunity to see people face
to face, on weekends for example, up to 11% of adults still prefer to stay at home and communicate on
their devices instead. (USA Today). The problem with socialising online is that affects a person s
ability to communicate properly in face to face interactions. The person will feel a sense of social
anxiety and not project their voice loud enough for their audience to hear them. For

Anne Bradstreet To My Dear And Loving Husband Analysis
Anne Bradstreet, A passionate puritan poet
Anne Bradstreet was a passionate poet that was very devoted to her family, her puritan religion, and
her husband. She lived during the early 1600 s and was a part of the Puritanism movement; her poetic
style was in her faith. Bradstreet wrote To My Dear and Loving Husband and Upon the Burning of
Our House, July 10th, 1666 , these two poems are significant because they gave her acknowledgement
for her beliefs and granted her themes to be inspirational.
Anne had an excellent education thanks to her father s high position, she soon moved out of England
to the new world in Massachusetts where she learned about puritanism. She did have a hard time
adjusting though, As a New England colonist, Bradstreet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The poem has also been an indicator of the unevenness of gender roles in Puritan culture, in which the
wife is vulnerable and subservient to the husband (Ruby). Another theme in the poem is how the
gender roles in the culture put women below men. Even though they represent shocking excesses of
material fortune in worldly terms, they are worth less to her than the love of her husband (Ruby). This
shows that no materialistic or currency can compare to her husband s love for her. The poem had a

Dr. Mannix Brief Summary
Dr. Mannix Summary Sheet
A Basic Biography
Dr Mannix was originally head of the Maynooch College in Ireland before moving to Melbourne,
Australia in 1913 as Coadjutor to Archbishop Thomas Carr. He was outspoken about Catholics being
denied the right of religious education and his main goal became to receive justice in this area.
Mannix rejected compromise and encouraged Catholics to be assertive of their beliefs. Within a year
of Dr. Mannix s arrival he gained a substantial amount of public attention to Catholic Australians
oppression. Mannix was a strong supporter of Catholic Federation (1911 document that allowed
Catholics more freedom to speak of their beliefs. Aimed to unite Catholics with other Australians).
Mannix also supported Australia in war but opposed conscription, especially due to conflict between
Britain and Ireland (his and many Catholics original home) at the time.
Outline of their contribution to Christianity/religion in Australia
Dr Mannix contributed to religion in Australia by fiercely supporting the rights of Catholic Australians
being a major factor in the ability for children to now go to government supported Catholic schools in
today s society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Often to strengthen a community, said community needs a spokesperson to reflect the group. Mannix
became that spokesperson for Catholics, especially those in Melbourne, as he was the Archbishop of
Melbourne. Not only did he build community, but he utilised the strong bonds in the community to
have demands met by politicians. He threatened to evoke the Catholic community s support of the
labour party unless took action for justice for Catholics. Mannix once said To reason with the average

Benedict Arnold Research Paper
Benedict Arnold, born January 14, 1741, in Norwich, Connecticut, had succeeded to be an all around,
skilled man. His childhood, was full of hardships that took a lot of loneliness and work to get over.
Throughout his childhood, he dealt with great quantities of loss, as well as the fact he had to scurry for
survival. Therefore, Benedict worked many jobs to help his situation, and despite the troubles, he
always seemed to be determined to do more. After all of his jobs, Benedict wanted to be in the militia,
as well as join the sons of liberty, to take action over the violated rights and frustration that taxes are
bringing. Over the years in the militia, Benedict won and lost many battles, fighting as a proud citizen
of the colonies. It has been heard that he has a major problem with an outburst of opinion, and has
made many enemies in command. The New York Gazette can make the ... Show more content on

His impacts in the colonies are shown mostly through his time at war. Recently, in the Battle of
Saratoga, Benedict Arnold was sent to help Horatio Gates as an infantry commander and all around
second in command. During these battles, Benedict had definitely expressed his opinion to General
Gates and admits to speaking this way to his officer. In the Battle of Saratoga, he realized that his
troops needed to go into the woods a fight the British, but General Gates only wanted to wait.
Benedict Arnold eventually convinced General Gates to let them fight, so they did as they were told
and went to the British. They fought as the best soldiers they could be, but General Gates broke off the
battle, letting British General John Burgoyne keep the land and the confidence. Benedict, then, fought
Burgoyne again, on October 7th. Because of his behavior in the first battle, Benedict Arnold was told
by the general to stay in his headquarters, rather than

Patience Required for the Writing Process
The writing process is, for me, a tedious procedure that requires a great deal of thought and proper
planning. At one point I used to think that good writers were talented individuals who understood
things like grammar and composition but over the years I ve come to believe that good writers have
patience. The kind of patience you would have to have when you re staring at a screen for ages, trying
to put a few thousand sentences together and have it all mean something. In my eyes, writing is far
from its own reward; it is a means to an end that can leave you irritated or angry. I would argue that
those who enjoy writing are not doing it right, but I suppose we are all individuals with our own
methods this is mine. First and foremost, before I begin a project, I take a minute to think about what I
am writing about. This might seem pretty elementary, but when I say a minute, I m really talking
about hours, even days if I can afford to. This sort of thinking can occur anywhere, but it usually
happens right in front of my computer and as one would expect, it is absolutely exhausting. During
this time, I might poke at my keyboard and attempt to put a few words together, but these early
musings rarely make the final cut. That being said, I would like to think that my approach is pretty
straightforward, but some might view it as a bit manic. I can say with absolute certainty, that anxiety is
my worst enemy when it comes to writing especially if what I m trying to

Self-Hatred In Carrie White
Carrie s mom in the 2013 film is more interested in harming herself than harming Carrie White. In the
original version there was a sense of self hatred, but in the latest version that self hatred is magnified.
Margaret White s self harm in the original version seemed like a ploy to increase the fear of her
daughter. However, in Pierce s version anytime she is on screen in the new edition it raises her
undisclosed infatuation with self harm. In this film, it is apparent that a rape caused her unyielding
disgust of sex. This makes her mother less of an antagonist and more of a victim to sufferings rather
than a catalyst. At the beginning of the film, Margaret is in the midst of giving birth, completely alone,
and ignorant of how babies are made. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If she actually wanted to help, she could have spoken to her instead of convincing her boyfriend to be
Carrie s date to the prom. Sue could have welcomed Carrie into her inner circle and show the other
girls that Carrie isn t too bad after all. However, Sue decides to go behind her back to avoid being seen
with Carrie. The horrific massacre that takes place in both of the films could have been avoided if Sue
befriended Carrie. Which still makes the audience question whether Sue is doing this to be friendly or
if she is doing this to clear her guilty conscience. Consequently, this is the reason why Sue in Brian De
Palma s version is punished at the end of the film. After the massacre and Carrie White s death Sue is
left traumatized. In the closing scene, Sue is the only one to escape the burning school. She envisions
that she s placing flowers on the burnt out spot where Carrie s house stood. Unexpectedly, a bloody
hand reaches up through the ground and snatches her wrist. Sue wakes up screaming in her mother s
arms. Although Sue considered herself doing a good deed, she was still punished because her
intentions weren t as genuine as she would have liked to think. However, when Carrie White murders
Miss Collins, the only person that was nice to her, on the surface it seems a bit unnecessary. Carrie
White murders a lot of people in Brian De Palma s version that seems a bit excessive. The director

Russia s Foreign Policy During The Cold War
At the height of the Cold War, Soviet foreign policy of the time was simple: increase world influence
through the spread of communism in order to undermine democracy, specifically the United States.
Today, Russia s foreign policy appears confusing to most westerners because of the wide scope of
Russian efforts but the objective is still the same: increase world influence. Currently, Russia adopts a
flexible diplomatic outlook by entering alliances that serve a temporary but strategically significant
purpose. Current global conditions and Russia s foreign policy will complicate the United States
international strategy by increasing global economic competition through economic partnerships with
China and small military engagements within central and eastern Europe and the Middle East. During
the Cold War, Russia dominated the Eastern Bloc not only in its military capability but through its
economy as well. While Soviet products were not considered to be of the highest quality, their
manufacturing capability, supported by defense spending was considerable. Whenever the Soviet
economy floundered or the socialist/communistic system was questioned, inevitably the Soviets
assigned blame to capitalism and western influences. In reality, when Mikhail Gorbachev became the
general secretary of the communist party in 1985, he instituted a major reform program with the intent
of improving economic conditions for the Soviet Union and its satellite states (History.com). The

Narrative Techniques in the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas...
Narrative Techniques in
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a novel by John Boyne. This novel is set during World War 2 and
explores themes such as prejudice, racism, war, innocence and friendship. What sets it apart from
other novels is that it uses a third person limited point of view, and mostly depicts events as they are
seen by a young and naïve boy. This was one of the main narrative conventions that engaged me in
this novel.
The point of view is the most interesting and important narrative convention of this novel. It is written
in third person limited mostly from Bruno, the young boys, perspective. This means it does not use I
or we but we do get to find out what the main character is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He merely parrots back things that he has heard others say as he thinks this is normal and he has no
way to know otherwise. One particularly poignant example is Heil Hitler, he said, which, he
presumed, was another way of saying, Well, goodbye for now, have a pleasant afternoon. p.54. This
made me as a reader wonder wether I would be blind to the harsh reality if I had been raised in that
way. I think that this is one of the most important things Boyne wants this novel to make us think
about.
In parts of the novel Bruno begins to actually lose his innocence and learn and understand more about
the world around him. For example, when he is talking to Maria about his father and she starts to
speak to him about her earlier life he realized for the first time that he had never fully considered her
to be a person with a life and a history of her own, p.60. This process is not fast enough as this
innocence still leads to his early death in a gas chamber. However, he thinks that he is just going on a
march while he was trying to help his friend, and this means that he is not afraid. His innocence acts
like courage, and shields him from fear while placing him in danger.
There are also symbols and comparisons made in the novel. Mostly these are during interactions
between Bruno and Shmuel, and often they are very unrealistic, and do not further the plot but instead
are there just to make a point. For

Truss Bridges Research Paper
Bridges are important, but what makes bridges so interesting? Bridges have been around for a long
time. Bridges go all the way back to the Romans with arch bridges and to the suspension bridges in
modern day cities. There are various types of bridges, but which one can support the most weight?
Truss bridges can support weight because of their meticulously placed beams, but which truss is the
best?
The history bridges have surrounding them spans a long period of history. Romans were the first
civilization to construct long lasting bridges with their aqueducts. They made arch bridges which play
a hand in many of the designs of modern bridges. Nowadays bridges use trusses to strengthen them.
There are many types of bridges and trusses. The first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All are very effective and work well if built in the right conditions. The thing that separates these
bridges from one another is that they all have different points of compression and tension. Tension is
two forces of opposition that pull away from each other to keep it from being pulled together. If you
imagine a rope in a game of tug of war, the rope has a lot of tension because it is being pulled apart,
but the opposing force inside of the rope is trying to keep it together. The same can be applied to a
bridge truss because the tension truss is opposing the compression truss by pulling the bridge apart.
Tension also pulls the platform of the bridge by stretching it to keep the bridge from collapsing.
Compression is two forces in opposition that push an object together to try to compress it. If you think
of someone standing on a soda can, the soda can tries to resist being squished, but the weight of the
person standing on the can still squashes it. This example can also pertain to the truss on a bridge. A
compression truss opposes the tension truss by pulling the bridge together. Compression is also placed
on the top of a truss and in its bases. The compression at the top of the bridge counteracts with the
tension of the platform and balances out each force. The compression in its bases is from the weight of
the platform and trusses. Bridge engineers calculate the tension and

Professionalism Of The Business Industry
The purpose of this research is to educate or inform people, who are working or about to work in the
field of business, about professionalism in the business industry because it is extremely complex and
important. Besides from wearing proper attire or having higher education, many set standard of
procedures must be abided by to be recognized as professional (Beaton, 2010; Granowski, 2012). As
Granowski and Beaton suggests or implies, professionalism is not easy to acquire because it exists for
the purpose of satisfying the customers, who are individuals with various and unique personalities.
The goal of business is to make profit. As long as customers desire and expect professional service,
business must be able to provide that.
Professionalism validates quality of business, and thus results in desired future business endeavors. In
this regard, Beaton (2010) provides an appropriate example which illustrates doctors. He states that
doctors are expected to be safe and bring positive outcome by their patients because they hold and
exhibit their degree, wear proper uniform, maintain overall hygiene, and use educated and
sophisticated words that lead patients to completely believe that doctors will even sacrifice themselves
to help patients. No one wants to be frauded, and professionalism is like antibiotic that kills that worry
of possibly being frauded. Beaton s example undoubtedly depicts that professionalism ensures that
business is trustworthy, and ultimately, will

General Motors Oligopoly Essay
The average level of profit per annum is approximately $5.02 billion USD. As shown by the table
above, the average revenue, $39 256.20, is significantly greater than the average total costs,34 289.20.
Although we cannot ascertain what the level of normal profit for General Motors truly is, considering
the revenue earned is approximately $5 billion greater than the total costs, General Motors is clearly
charging significantly more for vehicles than just the price that covers costs. Thus there is a presence
of abnormal profits proving that the firm is operating in an oligopolistic market. Additionally, the firm
s ability to charge a significantly greater price for each unit sold, shows its price making behavior in
the industry. Often firms will drive down prices to intentionally ensure new entrants in the market
cannot sustain this loss of revenue. However the fact that there has not been any significant price
reductions in the past years of operation proves that the threat of competition is not enough to force
prices down towards normal profit levels and there are thus high barriers to entry.
3. Non Price Competition
As previously discussed, prices in the automotive industry tend to stick at their current set price and
only increase or decrease within a small range. Since firms in an oligopoly do not compete by
adjusting the price of their products, they compete using non price related methods.
To begin, one way in which General Motors broadens its consumer base is

Analyze The Ways In Which Television Has Effected Education
In chapter 10 Postman discusses the ways in which television has effected education. He uses the
example of Sesame Street quite a lot throughout the chapter. He begins by stating Sesame Street was
almost guaranteed to be successful with children due to the fact that having children learn through
essentially commercials is nothing new. While the show is educational it is still pure entertainment. He
continues of to say that Sesame Street actually goes against traditional book learning but puts of a
front that it teaches children to love school. It does not teach children to love school, but rather to love
television. Going to a classroom is a place where the children can interact socially and the television
show isolates them, in a classroom

Lucretius Influence On Religion
The first author I chose that shows Roman influence on the modern world is Lucretius. What is
strikingly modern about Lucretius analysis of death is that he incorporates science within religion.
This conceptualization of religion within a scientific context is relative to modern thought. His works
were read heavily within the 20th century which is the period where being non religious was
becoming increasingly popular. His philosophy does not contain the same fundamental features the
majority of contemporary religions have like an afterlife. Lucretius writes, That shows that we have
nothing to fear from death; Nothing can happen to the man who is not there; It is just the same as if he
had never been born . This idea of nothingness after death is popular with those who have faith in
science. The belief in science can be argued as a religion itself as it has the same ... Show more

fought for the greater good of the building of their nation... like that of the building of Rome. Vergil
writes, ...to rule mankind, and make the world obey, disposing peace and war by thy own majestic
war; to tame the proud... (Vergil). This excerpt essentializes the common ideologies behind
nationalistic movements. There is a desire to work together as individuals to develop their nation or
the greater good. In addition, the concept of heroes is not seen within modern world as it is during
Ancient Rome. Therefore, the Roman influence, of their social ideals that the concept of the
individuals role is to better the greater good, is present in contemporary

Strategic Challenges For Local Communities
Strategic Challenges for Local Communities The Department of Homeland Security released the 2014
Quadrennial Homeland Security Review on June 18, 2014 as required by the Homeland Security Act
of 2002 and its amendments. This review outlined the current state of preparedness, as well as the
future areas of concentration. It also determined six strategic challenges facing the nation: terrorist
threat; growing cyber threats; biological concerns as a whole; nuclear terrorism; transnational criminal
organizations; and natural hazards. The basic building block of emergency management in the U.S. is
the local community. Each step begins here. Threat assessments are completed on the local level.
Planning, mitigation, and response are all responsibilities of the local community to support the state
and Federal practice using the guidance provided by both.
One of the best guidance documents for these communities is the Comprehensive Preparedness Guide
201 (CPG201). In this guide, communities will complete the Threat and Hazard Identification and
Risk Assessment. The THIRA has a detailed four step process in developing a robust Risk Assessment
to allow the community to develop its plans. The first step is to identify the threats and hazards of
concern to the community. Some of the challenges described by the Department of Homeland Security
may not be applicable to the community or may pose extremely limited threat. The second step in to
give the threats context which states how

Washington Square Allegory Analysis
Washington Square as an Allegory of the Cruel Consequences of the Excesses of Rationalism
It is common to find literary critics and scholars underlining Henry James dislike of allegory. The
following section of James book, Hawthorne, is often quoted as evidence of this:
I frankly confess that I have as a general thing but little enjoyment of it [allegory] and that it has never
seemed to me to be, as it were, a first rate literary form...it is apt to spoil two good things a story and a
moral; a meaning and a form.... (Hawthorne 23)
It is based on this quote that Joan Bennett claims that it would be wrong to read the works of James as
allegory (16). But Bennett is wrong. Washington Square has many concrete features of narrative
allegory. As an allegory, it is an explicit warning about he evil consequences of the excesses
rationalistic worldviews, especially when the latter include the belittling of all that is not rational. Dr.
Sloper, is the literal personification of those excesses.
I
There are various reasons why James may have experimented with allegory and its narrative forms in
Washington Square. The first is that the general claim that James hated allegory is an incomplete
reading of what James wrote about it in Hawthorne. In the lines that immediately follow the text
quoted above, he adds: The only cases in which it is endurable is when it is extremely spontaneous,
when the analogy presents itself with eager promptitude (23), and Hawthorne, he notes, uses allegory

Australian dollar Essay
Question 2
a) A fall in the value of the Australian dollar (AUD) against the U.S. dollar (USD) benefit Billabong in
two folds, strengthened price competitiveness and translation advantage. Firstly, the Americas
segment accounts for about 50% of Billabong s sales revenue in 2008 and 2009. (Appx.1) In case of
depreciation of AUD against USD, the price of imported surfwear to the U.S. in terms of USD will
decrease. The US importers demand more for Billabong s products. The sales increases from the
strengthened price competitiveness. Secondly, when Billabong received payment from the importers,
it will translated back into AUD for use in Australia. As AUD depreciate, the receipt in USD can be
translated into more AUD than before, bringing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Billabong may diversify its production by foreign direct investments in the U.S. e.g. set up local
production plants. In case of appreciation in AUD against USD, the price competitiveness of products
would not be weakened as compared with local products. Flexible sourcing could be applied to allow
switch of production from one country to another. Learning from Stanley Black Decker, Billabong
could reduce its import to the U.S. and export more from the U.S. production plant to other countries
when USD depreciate against other currencies. This help to create long term economic
competitiveness in the U.S. market.
For diversification of market, a more balanced market distribution is recommended. The current
position of Billabong is highly dependent on the Americas segment with almost half of the revenues.
If the situation continues, trading in other segments cannot help if the Americas segment fails.
Revenues when diversify in different currencies could be better secured from the economic exposure
of exchange rate risk.

Ruffalo
Sir Ronald Alymer Fisher Sir Ronald A. Fisher was born on February 17, 1890, in the small town of
East Finchley, in London, England. Fisher was an English statistician and biologist who used math to
combine genetics and natural selection. Fisher was born into a wealthy family where he was the
second born of twins. George Fisher, who was Ron s father, was an successful arts dealer, his mother
was a lawyer s. Ron was fortunate enough to have parents who could afford to send him to one of the
best private schools I his area. Unfortunately when he was 14, his luck ran out. His mother died of
peritonitis and his father s business tanked and declared bankruptcy. Ron was forcibly moved from his
glamourous mansion in one of the richest parts of London, to a small house in one of the poorest
areas.
Things started looking up for Ronald however, when The Harrow School continued to pay for his

Leave It To Beaver And Malcolm In The Middle
Reality TV are programs in which real people are continuously filmed, designed to be entertaining
rather than informative. ( reality TV: definition of reality TV in Oxford dictionary (American English)
(US), n.d.) That s the book definition and rightfully so, but I d say in the context of reality I d use that
term in the contrast between Leave it to Beaver and Malcolm in the Middle. We have two family
sitcoms that are related with both centering on a child while they deal with problems that arise. The
reality is in the way they were portrayed. One is on the side of an idealistic portrayal of family life and
the other in portraying of a somewhat normal dysfunctional family lifestyle. In Leave it to Beaver the
show starts with introductions

History of the Cello Essay
Cello
The Cello, a very unique mid size instrument of the 16th century, was very interesting. Originally
called the violoncello, the cello received its name from violone meaning a larger and cello in Italian
means shoulder. The meaning suggests a big violin that can be played between ones legs and held in
place by a strap. The cello was also influenced by a number of people that made this instrument a
success. There is a little history about this instrument that I think you will enjoy.
The first known account of this instrument was in Agricola s, Wittenberg 1528, were it was part of a
bass consort. The first known maker of a cello was Andrea Amati and his descendants in Cremona and
Gasparo da Salo in Brescia during the 1500 s. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The dimensions of the cello are measured at around 75 6cm long and 44.5cm wide. The dimensions of
the cello can be accredited to Antonio Stradivari back in 1707 with his smaller model they called
forma B . The larger models of Stradivari times were the Servais cello of 1701 which is 79cm long
and 47cm wide. The makers of cellos quickly realized that there was a need for more than one kind of
cello. They needed the larger ones with thick strings for orchestra playing and also the smaller ones
with thin strings for solo pieces. The measurements of the neck and fingerboard of cello that has been
documented , is those of James Talbot in 1695 with the size of 10 inches long on the neck and 13
inches from the nut to the end of the fingerboard. The fingerboard would gain length as the range of
the hand positions increased by the players. The instrument is played with a bow. Although
Monteverdi was one of the first to use the violoncello in his piece Orfeo in 1607, many cellists used
the instrument. In the 17th century around Bologna, Petronio Franceschini, Domenico Garielli, and
Maria Jacchini were all well known solo performers. There are sonatas written by famous composers
such as Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Brahms. There has been a number of cello concertos
written were the solo is accompanied by an orchestra. To name a few of those memorably pieces are:
25 by Vivaldi, 12 by Boccherini, A few pieces by Hayden,

Essay On Copernicus
Nicolaus Copernicus started out as just an ordinary person. In fact, according to today s standards of
intelligence, he was below average. Who knew that Copernicus would later become one of the most
intelligent people in the world. Copernicus changed the way that people during the Renaissance
viewed astronomy. Copernicus changed history as we know it today and if it wasn t for him, today s
astronomers may still be theorizing about the basic facts of our solar system.
Nicolaus Copernicus was born on February 19, 1473 in Poland. His parents, Nicolaus and Barbara,
were leading merchants and parented four children, Copernicus being the youngest. Then, when
Copernicus was around 10 to 12 years old, his father died and his brother, Lucas, took his nephew
under protection and was soon to become bishop of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These two books taught Copernicus everything he needed to know about astronomy and astrology.
These books also led Copernicus to most of his discoveries and the making of a few books himself
such as De revolutionibus . In this book, Copernicus described viewing the Moon Eclipse stating it
was, the brightest star in the eye of the Bull .
Copernicus had only 27 recorded observations in his lifetime though he most likely had more than
that. He viewed eclipses, planets, stars, and much more. That may not seem very impressive today but,
for Copernicus time period, it was quite a discovery.
Copernicus wrote his book, De revolutionibus , it was only published the year of his death in 1543.
The reason for his book with priceless information about our solar system to be published so late was
that it was controversial and many other theorists disagreed with Copernicus claims. It was only at the
year of his death that people realized that Copernicus was

year later, a San Francisco club introduced the Irish sport of hurling into the United
States. That same year a yellow fever epidemic killed 5,000 people in New Orleans. In

the former received 29,644 square miles of territory (the southernmost areas of present

Elias To South Preu Analysis
The adventures of Elias to south Preu provides an example of his trial to spread Christianity in that
area. While reading his journey account from the beginning, one may notice he uses many religious
excerpts for supporting his view of the Christianity. Thus, he sets out from Baghdad to visit to tomb of
Jesus in Jerusalem, moving and acting as a priest of Chaldean church who is blessed by the power of
Jesus I fortified myself in God and drew strength from his blessed mother, the virgin Mary (15). There
is no doubt that the religious and secular discourse was an evident factor that shaped such journey
from the beginning till the end. Analytically speaking, he uses many repetitions of words like silver,
gold during the places he visited. Moreover,

  • 2. Ralph Waldo Emerson s Ideology Of Self Identity In the essay, Self Reliance, Ralph Waldo Emerson s ideology of self identity is impractical today because the media has hindered society from developing our true identities. The use of social media is ruining this generation s real life social skills. According to Social Media Today, an online community for professionals, The amount of time people spend on social media is constantly increasing. Teens now spend up to nine hours a day on social platforms, while 30% of all time spent online is now allocated to social media interaction. Texting or online communications does not allow people to truly express themselves for who they truly are. There is a loss of social and personal development communicating through social media. For instance, people online are unable to use body language, tone, voice and facial expressions through a text. An article on The Telegraph, pointed out that One in four people spend more time socialising online, using sites such as Facebook, than they do in person, according to research. The study also found that even when there is an opportunity to see people face to face, on weekends for example, up to 11% of adults still prefer to stay at home and communicate on their devices instead. (USA Today). The problem with socialising online is that affects a person s ability to communicate properly in face to face interactions. The person will feel a sense of social anxiety and not project their voice loud enough for their audience to hear them. For ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She lived during the early 1600 s and was a part of the Puritanism movement; her poetic style was in her faith. Bradstreet wrote To My Dear and Loving Husband and Upon the Burning of Our House, July 10th, 1666 , these two poems are significant because they gave her acknowledgement for her beliefs and granted her themes to be inspirational. Another theme in the poem is how the gender roles in the culture put women below men. This shows that no materialistic or currency can compare to her husband s love for her. The poem had a deal of reviews from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dr. Mannix Brief Summary Dr. Mannix Summary Sheet A Basic Biography Dr Mannix was originally head of the Maynooch College in Ireland before moving to Melbourne, Australia in 1913 as Coadjutor to Archbishop Thomas Carr. He was outspoken about Catholics being denied the right of religious education and his main goal became to receive justice in this area. Mannix rejected compromise and encouraged Catholics to be assertive of their beliefs. Within a year of Dr. Mannix s arrival he gained a substantial amount of public attention to Catholic Australians oppression. Mannix was a strong supporter of Catholic Federation (1911 document that allowed Catholics more freedom to speak of their beliefs. Aimed to unite Catholics with other Australians). Mannix also supported Australia in war but opposed conscription, especially due to conflict between Britain and Ireland (his and many Catholics original home) at the time. • 5. Benedict Arnold Research Paper Benedict Arnold, born January 14, 1741, in Norwich, Connecticut, had succeeded to be an all around, skilled man. His childhood, was full of hardships that took a lot of loneliness and work to get over. Throughout his childhood, he dealt with great quantities of loss, as well as the fact he had to scurry for survival. Therefore, Benedict worked many jobs to help his situation, and despite the troubles, he always seemed to be determined to do more. After all of his jobs, Benedict wanted to be in the militia, as well as join the sons of liberty, to take action over the violated rights and frustration that taxes are bringing. • 6. Patience Required for the Writing Process The writing process is, for me, a tedious procedure that requires a great deal of thought and proper planning. At one point I used to think that good writers were talented individuals who understood things like grammar and composition but over the years I ve come to believe that good writers have patience. The kind of patience you would have to have when you re staring at a screen for ages, trying to put a few thousand sentences together and have it all mean something. In my eyes, writing is far from its own reward; it is a means to an end that can leave you irritated or angry. I would argue that those who enjoy writing are not doing it right, but I suppose we are all individuals with our own methods this is mine. First and foremost, before I begin a project, I take a minute to think about what I am writing about. This might seem pretty elementary, but when I say a minute, I m really talking about hours, even days if I can afford to. This sort of thinking can occur anywhere, but it usually happens right in front of my computer and as one would expect, it is absolutely exhausting. During this time, I might poke at my keyboard and attempt to put a few words together, but these early musings rarely make the final cut. That being said, I would like to think that my approach is pretty straightforward, but some might view it as a bit manic. I can say with absolute certainty, that anxiety is my worst enemy when it comes to writing especially if what I m trying to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Self-Hatred In Carrie White Carrie s mom in the 2013 film is more interested in harming herself than harming Carrie White. In the original version there was a sense of self hatred, but in the latest version that self hatred is magnified. Margaret White s self harm in the original version seemed like a ploy to increase the fear of her daughter. However, in Pierce s version anytime she is on screen in the new edition it raises her undisclosed infatuation with self harm. In this film, it is apparent that a rape caused her unyielding disgust of sex. This makes her mother less of an antagonist and more of a victim to sufferings rather than a catalyst. At the beginning of the film, Margaret is in the midst of giving birth, completely alone, and ignorant of how babies are made. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sue could have welcomed Carrie into her inner circle and show the other girls that Carrie isn t too bad after all. However, Sue decides to go behind her back to avoid being seen with Carrie. The horrific massacre that takes place in both of the films could have been avoided if Sue befriended Carrie. Which still makes the audience question whether Sue is doing this to be friendly or if she is doing this to clear her guilty conscience. Consequently, this is the reason why Sue in Brian De Palma s version is punished at the end of the film. After the massacre and Carrie White s death Sue is left traumatized. In the closing scene, Sue is the only one to escape the burning school. She envisions that she s placing flowers on the burnt out spot where Carrie s house stood. Unexpectedly, a bloody hand reaches up through the ground and snatches her wrist. Sue wakes up screaming in her mother s arms. Although Sue considered herself doing a good deed, she was still punished because her intentions weren t as genuine as she would have liked to think. • 8. Russia s Foreign Policy During The Cold War At the height of the Cold War, Soviet foreign policy of the time was simple: increase world influence through the spread of communism in order to undermine democracy, specifically the United States. Today, Russia s foreign policy appears confusing to most westerners because of the wide scope of Russian efforts but the objective is still the same: increase world influence. Currently, Russia adopts a flexible diplomatic outlook by entering alliances that serve a temporary but strategically significant purpose. Current global conditions and Russia s foreign policy will complicate the United States international strategy by increasing global economic competition through economic partnerships with China and small military engagements within central and eastern Europe and the Middle East. During the Cold War, Russia dominated the Eastern Bloc not only in its military capability but through its economy as well. While Soviet products were not considered to be of the highest quality, their manufacturing capability, supported by defense spending was considerable. Whenever the Soviet economy floundered or the socialist/communistic system was questioned, inevitably the Soviets assigned blame to capitalism and western influences. In reality, when Mikhail Gorbachev became the general secretary of the communist party in 1985, he instituted a major reform program with the intent of improving economic conditions for the Soviet Union and its satellite states (History.com). • 9. Narrative Techniques in the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas... Narrative Techniques in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a novel by John Boyne. This novel is set during World War 2 and explores themes such as prejudice, racism, war, innocence and friendship. What sets it apart from other novels is that it uses a third person limited point of view, and mostly depicts events as they are seen by a young and naïve boy. This was one of the main narrative conventions that engaged me in this novel. The point of view is the most interesting and important narrative convention of this novel. It is written in third person limited mostly from Bruno, the young boys, perspective. This means it does not use I or we but we do get to find out what the main character is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He merely parrots back things that he has heard others say as he thinks this is normal and he has no way to know otherwise. One particularly poignant example is Heil Hitler, he said, which, he presumed, was another way of saying, Well, goodbye for now, have a pleasant afternoon. p.54. This made me as a reader wonder wether I would be blind to the harsh reality if I had been raised in that way. I think that this is one of the most important things Boyne wants this novel to make us think about. In parts of the novel Bruno begins to actually lose his innocence and learn and understand more about the world around him. For example, when he is talking to Maria about his father and she starts to speak to him about her earlier life he realized for the first time that he had never fully considered her to be a person with a life and a history of her own, p.60. This process is not fast enough as this innocence still leads to his early death in a gas chamber. However, he thinks that he is just going on a march while he was trying to help his friend, and this means that he is not afraid. His innocence acts like courage, and shields him from fear while placing him in danger. There are also symbols and comparisons made in the novel. Mostly these are during interactions between Bruno and Shmuel, and often they are very unrealistic, and do not further the plot but instead are there just to make a point. For ... Bridges go all the way back to the Romans with arch bridges and to the suspension bridges in modern day cities. There are various types of bridges, but which one can support the most weight? Truss bridges can support weight because of their meticulously placed beams, but which truss is the best? The history bridges have surrounding them spans a long period of history. Nowadays bridges use trusses to strengthen them. There are many types of bridges and trusses. The first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All are very effective and work well if built in the right conditions. The thing that separates these bridges from one another is that they all have different points of compression and tension. Tension is two forces of opposition that pull away from each other to keep it from being pulled together. If you imagine a rope in a game of tug of war, the rope has a lot of tension because it is being pulled apart, but the opposing force inside of the rope is trying to keep it together. The same can be applied to a bridge truss because the tension truss is opposing the compression truss by pulling the bridge apart. Tension also pulls the platform of the bridge by stretching it to keep the bridge from collapsing. Compression is two forces in opposition that push an object together to try to compress it. If you think of someone standing on a soda can, the soda can tries to resist being squished, but the weight of the person standing on the can still squashes it. This example can also pertain to the truss on a bridge. A compression truss opposes the tension truss by pulling the bridge together. Compression is also placed on the top of a truss and in its bases. The compression at the top of the bridge counteracts with the tension of the platform and balances out each force. The compression in its bases is from the weight of the platform and trusses. Bridge engineers calculate the tension and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Professionalism Of The Business Industry The purpose of this research is to educate or inform people, who are working or about to work in the field of business, about professionalism in the business industry because it is extremely complex and important. Besides from wearing proper attire or having higher education, many set standard of procedures must be abided by to be recognized as professional (Beaton, 2010; Granowski, 2012). As Granowski and Beaton suggests or implies, professionalism is not easy to acquire because it exists for the purpose of satisfying the customers, who are individuals with various and unique personalities. The goal of business is to make profit. As long as customers desire and expect professional service, business must be able to provide that. Professionalism validates quality of business, and thus results in desired future business endeavors. In this regard, Beaton (2010) provides an appropriate example which illustrates doctors. He states that doctors are expected to be safe and bring positive outcome by their patients because they hold and exhibit their degree, wear proper uniform, maintain overall hygiene, and use educated and sophisticated words that lead patients to completely believe that doctors will even sacrifice themselves to help patients. No one wants to be frauded, and professionalism is like antibiotic that kills that worry of possibly being frauded. • 14. General Motors Oligopoly Essay The average level of profit per annum is approximately $5.02 billion USD. As shown by the table above, the average revenue, $39 256.20, is significantly greater than the average total costs,34 289.20. Although we cannot ascertain what the level of normal profit for General Motors truly is, considering the revenue earned is approximately $5 billion greater than the total costs, General Motors is clearly charging significantly more for vehicles than just the price that covers costs. Thus there is a presence of abnormal profits proving that the firm is operating in an oligopolistic market. Additionally, the firm s ability to charge a significantly greater price for each unit sold, shows its price making behavior in the industry. Often firms will drive down prices to intentionally ensure new entrants in the market cannot sustain this loss of revenue. However the fact that there has not been any significant price reductions in the past years of operation proves that the threat of competition is not enough to force prices down towards normal profit levels and there are thus high barriers to entry. 3. Non Price Competition As previously discussed, prices in the automotive industry tend to stick at their current set price and only increase or decrease within a small range. Since firms in an oligopoly do not compete by adjusting the price of their products, they compete using non price related methods. To begin, one way in which General Motors broadens its consumer base is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Lucretius Influence On Religion The first author I chose that shows Roman influence on the modern world is Lucretius. What is strikingly modern about Lucretius analysis of death is that he incorporates science within religion. This conceptualization of religion within a scientific context is relative to modern thought. His works were read heavily within the 20th century which is the period where being non religious was becoming increasingly popular. His philosophy does not contain the same fundamental features the majority of contemporary religions have like an afterlife. Lucretius writes, That shows that we have nothing to fear from death; Nothing can happen to the man who is not there; It is just the same as if he had never been born . Vergil writes, ...to rule mankind, and make the world obey, disposing peace and war by thy own majestic war; to tame the proud... (Vergil). • 22. Strategic Challenges For Local Communities Strategic Challenges for Local Communities The Department of Homeland Security released the 2014 Quadrennial Homeland Security Review on June 18, 2014 as required by the Homeland Security Act of 2002 and its amendments. This review outlined the current state of preparedness, as well as the future areas of concentration. It also determined six strategic challenges facing the nation: terrorist threat; growing cyber threats; biological concerns as a whole; nuclear terrorism; transnational criminal organizations; and natural hazards. The basic building block of emergency management in the U.S. is the local community. Each step begins here. Threat assessments are completed on the local level. Planning, mitigation, and response are all responsibilities of the local community to support the state and Federal practice using the guidance provided by both. One of the best guidance documents for these communities is the Comprehensive Preparedness Guide 201 (CPG201). In this guide, communities will complete the Threat and Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment. The THIRA has a detailed four step process in developing a robust Risk Assessment to allow the community to develop its plans. The first step is to identify the threats and hazards of concern to the community. Some of the challenges described by the Department of Homeland Security may not be applicable to the community or may pose extremely limited threat. The second step in to give the threats context which states how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 23. Washington Square Allegory Analysis Washington Square as an Allegory of the Cruel Consequences of the Excesses of Rationalism It is common to find literary critics and scholars underlining Henry James dislike of allegory. The following section of James book, Hawthorne, is often quoted as evidence of this: I frankly confess that I have as a general thing but little enjoyment of it [allegory] and that it has never seemed to me to be, as it were, a first rate literary form...it is apt to spoil two good things a story and a moral; a meaning and a form.... (Hawthorne 23) It is based on this quote that Joan Bennett claims that it would be wrong to read the works of James as allegory (16). But Bennett is wrong. Washington Square has many concrete features of narrative allegory. As an allegory, it is an explicit warning about he evil consequences of the excesses rationalistic worldviews, especially when the latter include the belittling of all that is not rational. Dr. Sloper, is the literal personification of those excesses. I There are various reasons why James may have experimented with allegory and its narrative forms in Washington Square. The first is that the general claim that James hated allegory is an incomplete reading of what James wrote about it in Hawthorne. In the lines that immediately follow the text quoted above, he adds: The only cases in which it is endurable is when it is extremely spontaneous, when the analogy presents itself with eager promptitude (23), and Hawthorne, he notes, uses allegory ... Australian dollar Essay Question 2 a) A fall in the value of the Australian dollar (AUD) against the U.S. dollar (USD) benefit Billabong in two folds, strengthened price competitiveness and translation advantage. Firstly, the Americas segment accounts for about 50% of Billabong s sales revenue in 2008 and 2009. (Appx.1) In case of depreciation of AUD against USD, the price of imported surfwear to the U.S. in terms of USD will decrease. The US importers demand more for Billabong s products. The sales increases from the strengthened price competitiveness. Secondly, when Billabong received payment from the importers, it will translated back into AUD for use in Australia. Billabong may diversify its production by foreign direct investments in the U.S. e.g. set up local production plants. In case of appreciation in AUD against USD, the price competitiveness of products would not be weakened as compared with local products. Flexible sourcing could be applied to allow switch of production from one country to another. Learning from Stanley Black Decker, Billabong could reduce its import to the U.S. and export more from the U.S. production plant to other countries when USD depreciate against other currencies. This help to create long term economic competitiveness in the U.S. market. For diversification of market, a more balanced market distribution is recommended. The current position of Billabong is highly dependent on the Americas segment with almost half of the revenues. If the situation continues, trading in other segments cannot help if the Americas segment fails. Revenues when diversify in different currencies could be better secured from the economic exposure of exchange rate risk. Smith, P. (2011, Aug 23). Exchange rate kills australian steel exports. • 27. History of the Cello Essay Cello The Cello, a very unique mid size instrument of the 16th century, was very interesting. Originally called the violoncello, the cello received its name from violone meaning a larger and cello in Italian means shoulder. The meaning suggests a big violin that can be played between ones legs and held in place by a strap. The cello was also influenced by a number of people that made this instrument a success. There is a little history about this instrument that I think you will enjoy. The first known account of this instrument was in Agricola s, Wittenberg 1528, were it was part of a bass consort. The first known maker of a cello was Andrea Amati and his descendants in Cremona and Gasparo da Salo in Brescia during the 1500 s. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The dimensions of the cello are measured at around 75 6cm long and 44.5cm wide. The dimensions of the cello can be accredited to Antonio Stradivari back in 1707 with his smaller model they called forma B . The larger models of Stradivari times were the Servais cello of 1701 which is 79cm long and 47cm wide. The makers of cellos quickly realized that there was a need for more than one kind of cello. They needed the larger ones with thick strings for orchestra playing and also the smaller ones with thin strings for solo pieces. The measurements of the neck and fingerboard of cello that has been documented , is those of James Talbot in 1695 with the size of 10 inches long on the neck and 13 inches from the nut to the end of the fingerboard. The fingerboard would gain length as the range of the hand positions increased by the players. The instrument is played with a bow. Although Monteverdi was one of the first to use the violoncello in his piece Orfeo in 1607, many cellists used the instrument. In the 17th century around Bologna, Petronio Franceschini, Domenico Garielli, and Maria Jacchini were all well known solo performers. There are sonatas written by famous composers such as Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Brahms. There has been a number of cello concertos written were the solo is accompanied by an orchestra. To name a few of those memorably pieces are: 25 by Vivaldi, 12 by Boccherini, A few pieces by Hayden, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Who knew that Copernicus would later become one of the most intelligent people in the world. Copernicus changed the way that people during the Renaissance viewed astronomy. Copernicus changed history as we know it today and if it wasn t for him, today s astronomers may still be theorizing about the basic facts of our solar system. Nicolaus Copernicus was born on February 19, 1473 in Poland. His parents, Nicolaus and Barbara, were leading merchants and parented four children, Copernicus being the youngest. Copernicus had only 27 recorded observations in his lifetime though he most likely had more than that. He viewed eclipses, planets, stars, and much more. That may not seem very impressive today but, for Copernicus time period, it was quite a discovery. Copernicus wrote his book, De revolutionibus , it was only published the year of his death in 1543. The reason for his book with priceless information about our solar system to be published so late was that it was controversial and many other theorists disagreed with Copernicus claims.
