Micheal Jackson s Jargon As A Profession
According to chapter 2, a clichГ© is a once clever word or phrase that has lost its impact through
overuse McLean, Scott (2010). Thereby, although one might try to be specific in this scenario, the
tendency of not being taken seriously by the receiver exist thus pose a hindrance to what might
have been a successful communicationsession. For instance, during a recent conversation I had
recently with my best buddy over coffee with some other of my closest childhood friends. She
had wanted to create a compilation of us her oldest buddies, lip syncing and dancing to Justin
Timberlake s cover version of Micheal Jackson s song love never felt so good and present it for
an upcoming birthday of her girlfriend which she had been dating for a while. Although I was all
sport about it, I had actually suggested that why don t she just say she loved her. But being the odd
duck that she is, my statement was a cliche as not only it might have unintentionally offended her,
it does sound as if I had missed the whole whimsical part of it.... Show more content on

Anzac Legacy Research Paper
I approvingly agree with the statement that the ANZAC legacy has survived to this day as
Australians across the country commemorate them every year for their brave efforts; hundreds of
thousands of men, women and children in Australia and overseas attend ANZAC day ceremonies
and marches; and they represent us Australians. Source 1 and 2 describe and show the impacts of
the war and the ANZACs efforts in the war.
Body paragraph 1
The ANZAC legacy still remains because Anzac stood, and still stands, for reckless valor in a
good cause, for enterprise, resourcefulness, fidelity, comradeship, and endurance that will never

On this day in 1915 Australian and New Zealand troops arrived at Gallipoli and in 1916 the day
was named ANZAC day.
Not only does ANZAC day remember the landing or anniversary but it is the day we remember
all Australians who have served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. The
courageous story of the landing at Gallipoli and the ANZACS are still remembered today.
Memorial facilities and services are held at sunrise on 25 April, the time of the original landing,
across the nation, usually at war memorials. This was started by returned soldiers after the First
World War in the 1920s as a common form of commemoration. The initial official dawn service
was held at the Sydney Cenotaph in 1927. It was the first year that all states acknowledged a
public holiday. Primarily the services were only attended by veterans who followed the ritual of
standing a moment of silence while listening to a lone piper playing the Last Post . Then later
marches were held in most major cities and many families and other people joined and
acknowledged them. Now ANZAC day is a day when Australians gather, reflect and remember the

History Of Science And Conceptual Understanding
History of science and conceptual understanding
According to Richard K Moran, and Page K, in Teaching for Conceptual Understanding in Science ,
Studying history of science is important because it enable students understand the development of
thought, and generalization would be empty without concrete examples. In addition, One important
concern for shutting history of science out of the undergraduate science curriculum was an anxiety
expressed about the history of science that the history of science is composed of hypocrisy and
skepticism science scoundrels , therefore, it is condemned by the scientific community. It also
indicates that although there were early scientists naive thinking and ideas, such early thinking
contribute to direct our present thinking and make students conceptual changes. It takes long time
for students to make change and build their personal knowledge to become accepted. Moreover, it
mentions that one important misconception about the history of science is there are no mistakes
and wrong turns science has taken; the development of science is only thought is cumulative, and
continuous in science from one generation to another one. Such an error is attributed to distorted
histories of science; especially those found in science textbooks, and contribute to widening the gap
between historian and students. Furthermore, it indicates that one important criteria of choosing
between competing and alternative theories is those, which show

Although, he taunted the authorities the 31 years he avoided getting arrested using the alias BTK.
Rader gave himself this name standing for, Bind, Kill, Torture . Dennis Rader did not want to get
caught for the murders, but like most serial killers, he wanted the credit. In order to take credit, he
sent many letters, poems, and clues to the authorities and media. On January 19, 1991, Rader killed
and tortured Dolores Davis, his last victim. (foxnews.com Fast Facts: BTK Victims) He did not
resurface until 2004, when the local media announced the 30th anniversary of his first murders.
(nbsnews.com, Who is the BTK killer?)
In 2004, Rader had resumed contacting the police and asked them if he could send them files on
diskettes. The authorities received the diskette and discovered it was from Rader s church. This
discovery was the major component in finding who BTK was. Another piece of evidence was a

18th Century Music
During the 18th century, music was used as a social enhancement on the rising middle class who
showed interest in intellectual ideals of Enlightenment. The rising middle class were people who
would come between the working class and the upper class. Such as craftsman, bankers, and
merchants. These select few decided that since they can now afford some of life s pleasures, that
they would spend it on music that aristocrats and nobility would listen to. While on the other hand,
during the 19th century, music began to develop a more story base theme with a moral lesson. Such
as Ballets and Grand Operas. So basically, during the 18th 19th century, music has evolved from just
sound or noise to a elegant and graceful story played through musical notation with different
musical instruments while advancing the growth of the middle class.
To begin with , the 18th century was the Classical era. In which music had order, symmetry, and
formal restraint. Composers such as Franz Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig
van Beethoven began creating music that pulled away from music that was mainly created for
churches. This secular music they created became entertainment for the aristocrats and the nobility.
A composer by the name of Johann Stamitz organized one of preliminary forms of the classical
orchestra. This orchestra consisted of the string section, the woodwind section, the brass section,
and the percussion section. The largest of the orchestra was called a symphony.

Teaching Philosophy as Education and Evaluation of...
ABSTRACT: Teaching philosophy and critical thinking is one of the main ways to clearly reaffirm
the value of human persons and of goodness and freedom. It is not sufficient to propose a
philosophical message, but we must teach it systematically (curriculum) with a real synergy
between teachers and parents. We must also build a curriculum, which includes an evaluation
model based on clear goals and objectives: the intermediateand final evaluation and assessment will
enable us to be surethat we have reached our aim. It is also necessary to verify every step, evaluate
it and compare it to the criteria (general project, goals, objectives) we put in our mind and use in
our teaching. This critical evaluation needs methods and some teaching... Show more content on

A problem arises about the teacher, whose duty would be to propose and not to impose his ideas:
truth, freedom and human person could be at risk, particularly in developing situations. It is
possible to overcome these problems by a philosophical education that could be able to teach
critical thinking as a method to evaluate, assess and verify ideas, events and everything that is
transmitted. This is a way philosophy can maintain its main traits. The present communication will
say how we can teach philosophy, and how we can evaluate philosophical learning (High, 1991; O
Loughlin, 1991), and how we can evaluate critical philosophical learning.
The teaching of philosophy want to obtain the integral education of human person, to know the
meaning of human existence and activiy (PIERETTI, 1991).
The teaching of philosophy is a contribute to В«complete formation of the human subject, specially
in doing philosophy, asking to know, to look for the truth, to compare opinions, to dialogue with
others subjects, with nature, with God. This kind of teaching significantly contributes to know the
human nature and to discover values and meanings of life and community (RIGOBELLO, 1979).

Explanation, Understanding, and Subjectivity Essay
Explanation, Understanding, and Subjectivity
ABSTRACT: Many theorists of explanation from Hempel onward have worked with the explicit or
implicit assumption that considerations of the subjective sense of understanding should be kept out
of the formulation of a proper theory of explanation. They claim that genuine understanding of an
event comes only from being in an appropriate cognitive relation to the true explanation of that
event. I argue that considerations of the subjective sense of understanding cannot be completely
removed from the process of formulating and justifying an acceptable theory of explanation.
Although understanding is neither a necessary nor sufficient condition for an explanation,
understanding is necessary as an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hence, we cannot say that anyone s sense of understanding is either necessary or sufficient for an
account to be an explanation. However, I shall argue, we cannot completely avoid all reference to
understanding in a correct theory of explanation. This situation presents a pressing problem for
philosophical studies of the nature of explanation, for many theorists relegate the sense of
understanding to a strictly derivative position by claiming that the subjective sense of
understanding of an event comes, under appropriate (articulable) conditions, from consideration of a
potential explanation, and that genuine understanding comes, under appropriate conditions, from
consideration of the true explanation. (See, for example, Hempel 1948, 256 257.) According to
such philosophers we should rely on a proper theory of explanation to delineate potential
explanations from non explanatory accounts and a delineation of understanding will follow. I shall
argue that this is not a workable option.
One can also express the issue at hand in terms of the relative subjectivity or objectivity of
explanation. Some theorists of explanation state an objectivity criterion for an account of
explanation, and many others implicitly employ one. Wesley Salmon, for example, states clearly
that the identifying criteria for scientific explanations must be objective, independent of personal,
psychological considerations.

My Friend Essay
When I was ten or eleven years old I was just like any other average girl in my school, except I was
particularly rude and mean to my friends. Friends are people you confide in, people you go to
when your feeling down, people you re the happiest with but for my friends it was just the
opposite. One day at school one of my friends had cut her hair and came to school feeling really
self conscious about her hair. As a friend you re supposed to comfort and compliment your friend
so they don t feel so bad but no when she came to school I made her feel even worse, Why did
you cut your hair? You look so much uglier than before! , I said to her. On another day a different
friend of mine s grandmother died and she was completely heartbroken. Her eyes were as red as
blood, the river of tears was drowning her face and they just wouldn t stop. You could hear her
trying to hold back her sobs like she had been holding them in for years. You could hear in her
voice she was grief stricken, she cried everyday and as a friend you would think that I would
comfort her, tell her everything was going to be ok and hug her as long as she needed me to.
No, when she came crying to me I told her, You re such a cry baby just because your grandma
died doesn t mean you have to cry every day! I ve said all of these things and many more to my
friends . I ve put them down, spread gossip about them, and was just down right mean to them. The
things that I ve said to them were borderline bullying. I

Lost Names: Scenes From A Korean Boyhood by Richard E. Kim is an autobiographical
fictionalization of the author s youth in Japanese occupied Manchuria. Though not a traditional
autobiography, the author tells his own story through the eyes of a nameless young man. The story
takes place between 1932 and 1945. The young man grows and changes from the start of the novel
to the end and meditates on the nature of war, family, duty and education among other things.
However, the most important aspect of the novel is the way in which it portrays the Japanese
occupation and the state of the main character s family as a result of it. The novel begins with the ...

The students even sing songs celebrating the 1937 rape of Nanking At the morning assembly,
the author notices that there are no Japanese children present: I discover later that they have
their own morning assembly in another field in the back of the school. It is obvious that we do
not mix classes. They have their own classes and classrooms, and we have ours, although we are
all the same school. A few years later, they will build a new school somewhere outside the town,
exclusively for themselves. On the main character s first day, he sings a European song that he
learned from one of his school friends back home in front of his new class. After the class, a
Japanese teachers scolds and beats him simply because the song was of a foreign nature. The boy is
defended by his own teacher, a Korean. This further stresses the ongoing fight against Japanese
ethnocentrism that was so prevalent, even in such places as the schoolroom. The Japanese and their
rabid ethnocentrism have their effect on the narrator s family. The family is generally happy and
well structured. The narrator lives with his mother, father, little sister and grandfather. As
mentioned before, the narrator s family pressures him to be better than the Japanese students. Upon
returning home after being beaten, the men of the house invite him to eat with them and drink
wine. This is a strong scene that is filled with the proudness of a parent for their son. Simply

With everyone wanting and buying alcohol it increased the demand for it, which is when
organized crime started. Once the organized crime families were established they were the main
contributors to the illegal Bootlegging of alcohol. During the 20 s there was a great deal of
violent crimes. Most of them could be connected back to the organized crime families. Alphonse
Gabriel Al Capone was a gangster who led illegal activities such as the smuggling and the
bootlegging of alcohol during the prohibition. Even though he had a tough exterior he was a
caring man he was the first to open up a soup kitchen in Chicago (hammer). Capone s estimated
annual revenue was around 100 million dollars. He had many men working for him such as
Frank Nitti, August Pisano and Louis Morganno. He supplied Chicago with most of its alcohol.

same with many of the men who could be classified as organized crime gangsters. With t the lack

his people. When the prophet Teiresias refuses to impart his knowledge that could save Thebes,
Oedipus grows angry. Agitated and spiteful from being mocked, Teiresias tells Oedipus the truth:
that Oedipus is the murderer of the former king, he is the reason his people suffer, and that his
entire family lives in shame and they don t know it. Oedipus does not believe him, and is in
denial about all that he has heard. Later, Oedipus still seeks the true criminal, with as much vigor

The Role Of Subgenre In American Horror Films
Hollywood, more than any other film industry, deserves to be attributed with the creation of the
horror genre. Even though it is not responsible for the first attempts at horror movies, it certainly
shaped the genre into what it is today and made it accessible to global audiences. The appearance
of horror movies happens in cycles with a distinct pattern that repeats itself a movie appears,
delivers thrills to the audience, and suddenly, due to low production costs, sequels and remakes are
made, or original films based on the same formula. This way, different subgenres are produced.
Eventually, the market becomes saturated and the subgenre dies. As the 1980s came to a close, the

Most of the classics seem to have fallen prey to the greedy hands of the movie industry in hopes of
collecting profit. A sequel to George A. Romeros Night of the Living Dead was made in 2004, in
2007 Rob Zombie directed his version of John Carpenter s Halloween, Gus Van Sant directed the
remake of Hitchcock s Psycho and The Saw franchise is due to get its eighth sequel released in
2017. Hantke calls this the symptom of the crisis of contemporary American horror film (6). Some
of these films did very well at the box office but most of them didn t, largely due to the loss of
originality and the ability to surprise and shock, which stands at the basis of every successful
horror film. The next step for the challenged horror industry was the process of
transnationalization searching for inspiration outside familiar borders, more specifically turning
to East Asia. The initial phase of J horror s rising popularity in the United States, for example,
was largely driven by a search, on the part of hardcore fans, for more exotic and extreme forms of
horror film. (Hantke 12) However, Hantke states that this is not an isolated phenomenon, since

The Uniform Of The Barn
The Uniform
This has been a difficult paper for me to write. I never thought that I had direct experience with
racism until I started writing. I grew up in sunny southern California on a horse farm. My first
group of friends were the Hispanic kids that lived on our property. Their parents took care of the
horses. Hugo, Jessie, Pita and I would play every day in the dirt pile at the barn. Hugo s mom
cleaned our house and helped take care of me. We were inseparable. I had no idea they were any
different than me until I started school. I think they felt the same. I attended a small, private
Christian school from kindergarten to eighth grade. The majority of the kids were like me, white,
and from the same economic background. We are wore uniforms, making us even more similar.
My friends from the barn went to the public school down the street where they were not required
to wear uniforms. By the fourth or fifth grade we stopped playing together in the dirt pile after
school. We went our separate ways as we grew further and further apart. My next stop was high
school. Cathedral Catholic was more of the same. The students were the same and more
uniforms. I felt confined and I wanted a different experience. I did not want to be in such a small
environment where everyone is the same. I never wanted to see another uniform! I wanted to be
away from the uniform in every sense of the word. I wanted to be around different people and
experience new things. I transferred to Torrey

How Did The Mongols Build The Empires
In the thirteenth century, Genghis Khan infiltrated other cultures in order to build his empire.
He did so very brutally, never backing down from opposition. One of the most important factors
to his conquests were the use of horses, especially in war. In the spiritual realm, horses were of
much importance as well. The Mongols utilization of horses as well as well equipped riders
made conquering other lands not nearly as difficult as it had been for past empires. The use of
horses quickly modernized civilization as a whole for the Mongols. Being nomads, horseback was
a way to quickly move from place to place in a time where there was little transportation other than
by foot. They were also given spiritual meaning, both being sacrificed and

Reverend Parris and Reverend Hale in The Crucible What is your motivation? Wealth? Power?
Good reputation? How about the truth? In Arthur Miller s The Crucible, all of these desires are
common. Two Puritan ministers, Reverend Parris and Reverend Hale, have one similar
motivation, the people of Salem, but they also have very different motivations, like reputation
and truth, which are exposed as the play unfolds. Reverend Parris and Reverend Hale have a
similar motivation, the people of Salem. While questioning Parris, he exclaims to Mary Warren,
Cast the Devil out! Look him in the face! Trample him! We ll save you, Mary, only stand fast
against him... (Miller 118) Hale, who has returned from a soul searching trip, is trying to get
people to confess to save their lives and suggests to Danforth, Excellency, if you postpone a week,
and publish to the town that you are striving for their confessions, that speak mercy on your part,
not faltering. (Miller 130) Sunstrand argues that, Hale and Parris realize too late that the accused
were victims of the girls hysteria and the townspeople s private grievances. (1) Despite having

Turning Point Of Juno
Analysis of the movie Juno
Plot
The movie follows a sixteen year old teenager named Juno. She often hangs out with her best
friend Leah and a guy named Paulie Bleeker, however after an accident with Bleeker, Juno finds
herself pregnant. At this time Juno knew she had to do something so she went to the nearest
Women s Clinic, but soon she changes her mind and gives it up for adoption instead. With the help
from Leah they soon find an ad in a newspaper, Juno decides to contact them and later she meets up
with them. They seem like the perfect parents but after a dramatic turn she finds out that they may
not be what she once thought. The big turning point for me would be when Mark reveals that he is
going to break up with Vanessa. After this Vanessa gets her heart shattered and Juno wants to help
them out. This led to Juno having to make many difficult decisions, even the whole plot changed
from one thing to the other. All this makes this certain turning point stand out from the rest and that
is why in my opinion this is the most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She is a sixteen year old girl that acts a lot different compared to the other girls in the film. Even
when she gets pregnant she tries to create an attitude that in turn changes how she acts around her
friends and family. Bleeker however really tries to let the mother do all of the work and he even
tries to put this thing aside as evidenced during one of the running segments. These two are the
main characters since I think the film is mainly about the relationship between both of them. How
Juno and Bleeker s relationship is presented towards the audience takes a turn during the ending
sequence in which it is revealed that both of them had developed feelings towards each other. In
the beginning however it s shown that Bleeker may like Juno in this way but it appears as if he

Organizational Culture And Its Influence On The...
Introduction
When a system shows the employees of the organisation what the behaviours should and should not
be, shares values and assumptions, it is termed as organisational culture. These values determine the
behaviour of the employees and also have a great influence on the organisation s performance. In
1980, Peter Waterman s book In Search of Excellence made the term organisational culturepopular.
His book made the argument that organization s achievement could be ascribed to an organisational
culture that was unequivocal, client situated, enabling, and individuals arranged. From that point
forward, organisational culture has turned into the subject of various research studies, books, and
articles. As opposed to a point, for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, a culture that enables personnel to come to a decision could demonstrate greatly
impervious to a unified organisational strategy, hampering the leader s capability to authorize such
a configuration. In any case, a culture that maintains the organisational structure (and the other way
around) can be very effective (Mason Carpenter, Talya Bauer, Berrin Erdogan, 2014)
The study of organisational culture is important and significant because it helps shape right
decisions for the organisation and outlines the behavioural expectations from employees and also
helps them interact with each other. Organisational culture also helps individual employees, groups
and the organisation as a whole to manage the assigned work and tasks and meet deadlines. The
attitude of stake holders towards the organisation, the organisations ability to accept change and the
efficiency of work within the organisation is well understood with the study of organisational
culture (Kenneth Desson Joseph Clouthier, 2010)

Wall Street Essays
Wall Street
To many a metaphor for a semi real place where fortunes are made and lost, Wall Street is actually
a very real place with a very rich history. Among investors, Wall Street refers to the collective set of
financial institutions in New York City including stock exchanges, banks, brokerages, commodity
markets, money markets, hedge funds, etc.[1] These institutions buy and sell securities in capital
markets. Securities are contracts, to borrow money or fund a company for a stake in its ownership
for example, that can be traded at a price. Capital markets are the markets, like stock exchanges,
where these securities are traded. Generally, companies need money to produce what they sell and
investors have this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1903 the NYSE moved to its current building on Wall Street. In 1907, a panic caused by the
collapse of the Knickerbocker Trust bank was considered the worst crash in Wall Street history to
date. During WWI, the Exchange was closed for five months, the longest period in its history.
After the war stock prices soared on Wall Street, and stock market speculation became widely
popular.[4]
The 1929 Crash
The 1920s was a decade of intense stock market speculation. The stock market permeated popular
culture much more than it does today. In 1929, a British correspondent wrote, You could talk about
Prohibition, or Hemingway, or air conditioning, or music, or horses, but in the end you had to talk
about the stock market, and that was when the conversation became serious. [5] During the 1920s,
stocks listed on the NYSE more than quadrupled in value. People believed that the market could
only keep going up. A prominent Yale economist, Irving Fisher, is known for claiming in the 1920s
that stocks were absolutely not overvalued and that, The nation is marching along a permanently
high plateau of prosperity. [6] Believing that stocks would just continue to increase in value, many
investors bought stock without researching different companies profitbablity. When people buy
stocks just because the market is going up and not because the company whose stock they buy is

Essay about The Faith of Mary Rowlandson
The Faith of Mary Rowlandson In her writing titled A Narrative of the Captivity and
Restauration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson , Mary lies out for the reader her experience of being
held in captivity by Indians during the King Philip s War. Perhaps one of the most significant
aspects of this writing is the glimpse that the reader gets into Rowlandson s faith and religion.
Faith was a major aspect of life in the Colonial Period. It was of widespread belief that Godwas to
be feared, and that he was the only way to redemption (Kizer). Mary Rowlandsonwas no different,
but the extreme conditions of her captivity caused her faith to occasionally waiver. Most of the time

She writes And here I cannot but take notice of the strange providence of God in preserving the
heathen... (Rowlandson 450). At this point Mary cannot seem to help but to contemplate why
God is allowing the Indians to prevail in this war. There was no denying the stark differences
between the victories of the English and the Indians. Consider the fact that the Puritans were
Christians of the strictest variety, and they did not believe that the Indians were blessed with
God s grace. It is quite understandable then that Mary would find it troubling that her people
were suffering devastating effects of this war fought by people who were not even Christians. So
she questions whether or not this is God s work. In the end she concludes that God is not helping
the Indians, rather he knows that the English are not ready for his mercy, and her faith is restored
once again (Rowlandson 450). As Mary s story unravels, she continues to suffer long hours of
work, starvation, and separation from her family. She reads her holy bible and is constantly
reminding herself that God is with her and will see her through these trials. Her spirits are lifted
her master agrees to sell Mary to her husband, and her mistress begins the journey with her, but
before long the mistress decides not to go any further and they turn back. Not long after, she starts

Nuclear Power And Nuclear Energy
On September 26th, Doctor Robert McTaggart came in and spoke to us about nuclear energy.
Nuclear energy uses the heat produced from nuclear transformations and reactions to power
turbines which create energy. A majority of the time, nuclear plants run off the fission of one of
three elements: Uranium 235, Uranium 233, or Plutonium 239. Something else that Dr. McTaggart
said that really stuck with me was that fissile isotopes like U 235 give off more energy than is put
into the system. Currently in the US, nuclear powermakes up 8.3% of our country s total energy
and all of the energy produced goes towards the electric power sector, where it makes up 22% of
the total amount of electric power.
Some advantages to the use of nuclear energy are that it has a carbon footprint of zero, it creates
constant energy, and it has a low operating cost. With no incidents, nuclear power is very
environmentally friendly, with no emissions and lots of power capacity. It is also very efficient
because most of the time, the energy that is harvested out of nuclear fission is greater than the
energy put in. The same thing cannot be said for any other resource, renewable or not. Once they
are built, nuclear plants have a very low operating cost, making them economical after they are built.
Some disadvantages to nuclear power are waste issues, high cost of building a power plant, and
terrible ramifications is safety precautions are not met. The waste issues associated with nuclear
energy are not

Louise Erdrich s Tracks Essay example
Louise Erdrich s Tracks
In Louise Erdrich s Tracks ;, the readers discovers by the second chapter that there are two
narrators, Nanapush and Pauline Puyat. This method of having two narrators telling their stories
alternately could be at first confusing, especially if the readers hasn t been briefed about it or hasn
t read a synopsis of it. Traditionally, there is one narrator in the story, but Erdrichdoes an effective
and spectacular job in combining Nanapush and Pauline s stories. It is so well written that one
might question as he or she reads who is the principal character in this story? Being that there are

Fleur smiles on knowing that she is the catalyst of the falling trees.
With the importance of Fleur throughout Tracks ;, she can be symbolized as being the nucleus
of an atom. Fleur, being the nucleus while the two narrators are like protons and electrons
orbiting around Fleur. Without the nucleus of an atom, there wouldn t be an atom; just as if there
were no Fleur, the two narrators wouldn t have someone to focus on. On the other hand, if the
atom were missing some electrons or protons, there would be an imbalance, but there would still
be some form of an atom. In other words, each narrator s story can be considered a separate entity.
It might not be as complete if the two stories were together, but because each story has a subject, a
motivation and a conclusion. It can survive on its own. But, because of Fleur s importance in both
stories, she cannot be excluded from either story without afflicting it detrimentally. If we relate this
to the novel and eliminate Pauline and her story, we still have Nanapush telling the history of Fleur
and the Chippewa s to Lulu. However, what is the significance of Nanapush telling Lulu about the
history of both her tribe and her mother?
The reasons are two fold. First, to reunite Lulu and her mother, Fleur. It seems that right from the

The Embodiment Of Tradition In Kate Chopin s The Awakening
Brian Sandoval10/27/17
Mr. AmorosoAP Literature Pd. 3 Awakening LAP Topic 4 Life has an abundance of crossroads
that we must pass in order to reach the zenith of our long and arduous journey to self realization.
One in particular is the decision to stay grounded in the relative safety of the earth or attempt to
soar high in the vast sky amongst the birds and clouds. Many do not dare leave the comforts of
the grass, haunted by the swift and deathly fall that is sure to follow and therefore mark anyone
foolhardy to try as idiotic for even thinking of accomplishing the impossible. Yet who is the fool;
the person brave enough to soar, willing to risk the unrecoverable drop down or the person who has
already resigned to their position in the plains, content with this fate? Edna Pontellier, the main
protagonist of Kate Chopin s The Awakening, is conflicted by this choice after she has plucked the
already fragmenting mask society has made her wear and shattered it. Now aware of the façade
and free of ignorance, Edna seeks guidance from her close confidants in order steer herself in the
right direction. Through the conversation had with Adele Ratignolle, the embodiment of tradition,
and Mademoiselle Reisz, the embodiment of eccentricity, Edna finds the answer to her own
confliction. Adele Ratignolle is the perfect representation of the traditional woman of the 1890 s, a
woman devoted to her children and husband, the type of woman that Edna is expected to be by

Advantages Of Reciprocating Compressors
1.Introduction A Reciprocating compressor or piston compressor is a positive displacement
compressor that uses pistons driven by a crankshaft to deliver gases at high pressure. All
compressor types have a clearance volume that contains gas at the discharge pressure at the end
of the discharge process. This volume may be small in some designs and significant in others.
Reciprocating compressors may have a large clearance volume, but recover the work done on this
gas by expanding it back to suction pressure in the cylinder. Reciprocating air compressors use
positive displacement, which generates air pressure via two sides that provide either suction or
discharge. Positive displacement is suitable for compressing small amounts of air at high... Show

This will either move it to the second phase of compression or the final one, depending on the
nature of your compressor. Compressing air generates heat that limits the oxygen content of the
air , thus reducing its density. Cooling the air essentially acts as a simple method for allowing
denser and more oxygen rich air to be again used by the engine, which in turn provides more fuel
and improves the power output when the air compressor is working with a combustion engine.
Intercoolers are essential for two reasons. First, they cool the air down to a proper temperature
to designed to remove moisture and water from the air. You will typically see this filter listed as
a moisture trap. After the air is cooled, it s returned to your compressor for additional
compressing. 5.4 Second, Higher Pressure Compression The air will move back into the main
chamber of your air compressor or the second chamber ,depending on its design and will be
further compressed by a high pressure element. The maximum pressure you will achieve typically
ranges from 116 to 145

Nickelodeon s Spongebob Squarepants has two main characters, Spongebob (of course) and
Squidward Tentacles. The two have some similarities but many difference between each other. Even

One obvious difference between Mr. Tentacles and Squarepants is their appearance. For one,
Spongebob is a yellow sponge where Squidward is, well a gray squid. Spongebob has only four
limbs and Squidward has eight. One is a long, lanky character and the other is more of a short,

Spongebob and Squidward (like their personalities) have interest in absolutely two different

hates the fact that he even works as a cashier for Mr. Krabs. Spongebob loves to go jellyfishing
with Patrick while Squidward enjoy staying in his house to play his clarinet, Claire. When it
comes to food, Spongebob s favorite food is the Krabby Patty and jelly from jellyfish. Squidward s
taste buds are completely different because he likes the taste of bread in a can.

The History of the U.S. and Cuba
The United States is known for being one of the greatest and strongest countries in the world
looking at past events and in this day and age. What might strike some people as shocking is that
the U.S. would not be as strong without close ties with other countries or allies. Examples would
be France, England, and Canada, plus many more. What people don t talk about is the U.S. s rivals
or countries that the U.S. has had trouble with in the past leading up to now. One of the most
renowned countries is only ninety miles away from the southern tip of Florida and that is Cuba.
Cuba is known for the fantastic beaches, some of the most well known baseball players around,
and, of course, Cuban cigars and rum. But, the past with Cuba is not as bright as the U.S. wants it
to be because of historical events such as the embargo, the Bay of Pigs, and the Cuban missile crisis
during World War II that caused the two countries to separate as allies and close tied nations. Over
the past year the U.S. and Cuba have been trying to put the past behind them and have diplomatic
and cultural relations once again. The last president to visit the nation of Cuba was President Calvin
Coolidge in 1928. Since then there has many problems between the two nations. Fourteen months

How Successful Was The Boxer Rebellion
The Boxer Rebellion of 1898 1901 is one of the best known but least understood events in
Chinese History. The Boxers were a group of Chinese peasants who despised every aspect of
foreigners and sought vengeance for the series of humiliations that China had suffered. Their
primary objective was to drive out all foreign influence out of China, which begs the question to
what extent were the Boxers successful in their fight against Imperialism? Throughout the
nineteenth century, China was threatened by the corruption of progress and foreign influence

Historian Victor Purcell s most widely held view of the Boxers is that they began as a conservative
anti Qing movement; in other words, they opposed the existing government that started to conform
to Western powers. The efforts of the Boxer Rebellionwas redundant in the sense that they led a
reformation. Although the Chinese government was mainly conservative it was still being
controlled by the foreign spheres of influence due to the unequal treaties signed to conclude the
Opium and Sino Japanese Wars. The Boxers were becoming well known practice, as their
continuous rampages and notable incidences linked to them gained the attention of conservative
officials at the court, whom of which convinced the Empress Dowager Cixi to view the Boxers
as a useful asset for resisting foreign pressure. Cixi had instructed provincial officials to not
suppress the Boxers activities. Gaining the full support of the Qing government meant they could
fully focus on foreigners from that point on. The Boxer s feat of gaining the support of the Qing
government, which was being controlled by the West supports the notion that China managed to
drive out a considerable amount of influence. In spite of the protest by the Western Powers and
the ultimatum presented to Cixi, which was to legitimize the foreign suppression of the Boxers or
to legalize the Boxer uprising and Collaborate with them. Empress Cixi chose the latter option

Another contributing factor is the decision to stop manufacturing digital cameras and expand the
company. According to the SWOT Analysis, the company has formed partnerships with Samsung
to sell their printer and with LifePics to develop photo merchandising services (2012). Perhaps
most impactful partnership Eastman Kodak has formed in recent years is with NovaCopy in 2012.
This joint venture will enable businesses to upload documents to Microsoft Office365, a cloud
based collaboration and productivity platform (Eastman Kodak SWOT Analysis, 2012).
Social Responsibility
The Eastman Kodak Company has a long history of ethics and social responsibility. George Eastman

on higher education including historically Black colleges (Jacques, 2010). He believed that giving
to the community, especially to its youth, is an investment in tomorrow (Jacques, 2010). The
company is a huge contributor of the United Way drives that help so many people all around the
world. In addition to its commitment to people, Eastman Kodak is also committed to the

fulfilling its social responsibility. In order to convey this commitment, Eastman Kodak has recently

Raising The Minimum Wage Of The United States
Raise the minimum wage: In the United States, studies show that women tend to make up a
disproportionate share of low wage workers. In the field of education, men tends to go more to
STEM than women and that also leads to high paying jobs for men. If we raise the minimum wage,
this will help hardworking women to support their families. Approximately, women made up two
thirds of all minimum wageworkers in 2012. With the current federal minimum wagei.e. $7.25 per
hour, someone working full time, only earn $15,080 a year round. People working full time with
minimum wage is still below the povertythreshold for any family with children and single person
is also not far above the poverty line. So, increasing the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour
would help increase the wages for about 15 million women, which will help close the gender wage
gap.
Raise the tipped minimum wage: The gender wage gap is vividly observed in tipped workers.
The federal tipped minimum wage, which hasn t been changed since 1991, only pays workers
$2.13 per hour. According to the Economic Policy Institute, women make up two thirds of tipped
workers and are 70 percent of food servers and bartenders, occupations that comprise more than
half of the tipped workforce. Tipped workers have a higher poverty rate than non tipped workers,
and 46 percent rely on government assistance to make ends meet.
As women account for two thirds of tipped workers, raising tipped minimum wage will help

Essay On The Battle Of The Coral Sea
In World War II there were many new ways that war was fought, from massive air campaigns to
the battles out on the sea between two naval fleets. The advancements in ships gave birth to
colossal Aircraft Carriers that were used in the Pacific Theater of World War II. These battles
were fought between the US Navy and the Imperial Japanese Fleet. The Aircraft Carriers in the
Pacific Theater played large roles in major battles between the US and the Japanese so that the
side with superior aircraft carrier presence won. In the Battle of the Coral Sea the Japanese
attempted to seize Australia. This battle is one of the first naval confrontations between the US
fleet and the Imperial Fleet. The Lexington, one of the carriers was scouting out enemy positions,
and was getting bombers ready to hit the Japanese carrier the Ryukaku on the first day of the battle.

This was also a very important battle because Japan would have used it to launch an invasion on
Hawaii. The U.S through decrypting Japanese codes caught wind of the Japanese invasion and
sent in 3 Aircraft Carriers, the Enterprise, the Hornet, and the Yorktown. The Japanese were
unaware that there were U.S carriers at Midway and the four Japanese carriers the Soryu, Hiryu,
Kaga, and Akagi would be caught by surprise. The Imperial fleet launched 108 zeros and
bombers. The first wave was a failure no U.S carriers were in sight so they had no target, the
Japanese had to send another wave out. The Japanese were ecstatic when they searched and saw
no Carriers they thought the battle was won. The US carriers then attacked they sent torpedo
bombers and they took out the lead ship the Akagi, then the Kaga met the same fate taking on three
torpedos. The American s lost the Yorktown in the battle, but the Hiryu, would be hit by four
bombs from dive bombers and the Soryu would also be destroyed (Hoyt 289

Bill Of Rights Vs. Des Moines Independent Public Schools
The Bill of Rights was created to put specific limits on governmental power and too give more of
that power to the individual himself. The government has compromised these liberties by abducting
the right of speech and peaceful protesting, acquiring illegal searches, and the presence of injustice
in the court system. The Bill of Rights protects these individual liberties by retaining the rights to
the people in Amendment IX, and defining the balance of the government, state, and individual in
Amendment X. (Tinker vs. Des Moines Independent Community School District, 1969) In
December 1965, students from Des Moines, Iowa met about a silent armband protest to support

China And The Implementation Of Pinyin
Over Population in China and the implementation of Pinyin In response to massive over
population in China, the Chinese over has taken drastic measures to reduce the nation s
population. The first step that was implemented was the one child policy also known as; pinyin.
Pinyin is the one child limitation on the majority of families that live in the People s Republic of
China. It is enacted under the official family planing policy. It limits the number of children
marries urban couples to have to one. The exceptions only apply to those who are: ethic
minorities, rural families who depend on children for farming and, parents without any siblings
themselves. The Chinese government has given an official statement saying that roughly to 35
to 40 percent of the Chinese population falls under the one child rule. The higher ups in the
government bureaucracy who mostly live in Macau and some parts of Hong Kong are not
affected by this policy as well. The policy was brought up by the government in 1978 but, was
officially enacted to first born children in 1979. Like today, China was dealing with many social,
economic, and environmental problems. Pinyin was a response to alleviate these problems.
Chinese authorities claimed that pinyin has prevented around 250 to 300 million births from the
time of its implementation in 1979 to the year 2010(SOURE CITATION). There is still
controversy within and outside of china for use of this policy. Because of the manner that policy
was carried

The Soundtrack Of The Century
The Soundtrack of the Century: Catcher in the Rye Soundtrack Catcher in the Rye was a
phenomenal work of literature. The novel has been able to withstand the test of time without
ever making it to the big screen. Now present day, with a movie of the bestselling novel coming
soon, every detail must amaze the avid reader of the book. This includes: top notch lighting, a
flawless director, a plethora of A list actors, outstanding scenery, and last but certainly not least, a
breathtaking soundtrack. A soundtrack can completely devastate a movie. If there is a scene
where a character is crying because they lost their friend, it would definitely be peculiar if the
music in the background was Can t Touch This by M.C. Hammer. Soundtracks tell the audience
what to feel whether it would be fear or excitement. With a soundtrack playing a critical position
in a movie, the songs that have been chosen have transcended more than just the scenes they are
played in, and turned into the embodiment of some of the major themes in the movie. A great
selection for the opening song would be a song by Chance the Rapper called Finish Line . On this
song, Chance the Rapper appears to just spout sentences that just come to head like the stream of
consciousness, like Holden. When Holden goes on his particular tangents he usually is trying to
get to a specific point, a finish line. Coincidentally, Holden during the entire book has been trying
to come to some finish line . With this song as the

Synthesis Essay America By Claude Mckay
The Definition of America Synthesis Essay A puzzle of 326,870,600 pieces, all different shapes,
sizes, and colors. There are no guidelines, no edges to follow, and no instructions. Only the
discordant and chaotic mess of 326,870,600 pieces. Why should we bother to stitch together this
puzzle, imperfect as it is? Why should we allow ourselves to look further into the pieces, and
change the picture? This puzzle is America; a country so large and diverse that each person is a
puzzle piece, each of their ideas and beliefs the tabs and pockets that fit them together. Each tab,
though individually shaped in accordance with the person, fits together in a similarly shaped
pocket. The pieces, cut into odd angles with holes and strange shapes... Show more content on

Patriotism, that powerful word that strikes fire in the heart of even the most contentious of
Americans, is the pedestal for which we place our national pride upon. J. Hector St. John
Crevecoeur, a late 1700s American Exceptionalist writes in his letter What is an American?, He
must necessarily feel a national sense of pride, when he views the chain of settlements which
embellishes these extended shores . Not just relating to the America of 250 years ago, national
pride is one of the fundamental bases of modern America as well. Despite arguments and
differences, the fact that Americans can come together in unity to grieve or celebrate or support
a cause seems obscure. This is a possibility because of national pride. Our love for our fellow
countrymen and our ideals outweigh whatever personal agenda we are pushing. Anna Quindlen,
the author of the article Quilt of a Country, writes patriotism is partly taking pride in this unlikely
ability to throw all of us together in a country that across its length and breadth is as different as a
dozen countries . It doesn t matter whether we are African American, Irish American, Japanese
American, or Native American. We the people, a people of pride where the right side of the
hyphen is more important than the left, allow ourselves to rise up in the face of a challenge. We

Mobile Phones Vs Cell Phones
Technology has made huge impact in how people are communicating, getting in touch with
someone has never been easier before! All you do is write a quick text and press send, but the
problem is when teens disconnect from their social media it is harder for them to be social face
to face. Adults on the other hand use their cell phones a bit differently than teens. Studies have
been made to compare how different age group use their precious cell phones that may or may
not have changed their lives. Cell phones are very helpful because they make it much easier to
get in touch with people and talk to them and without having to be with them at the time. But
studies have shown that different age groups use their phones a bit differently. For example, a
study done by the writer of Cell Phones are Changing Social Interaction, Deborah Forgays, and
Jessie Schreiber compares how different age groups use their cellphones. In this study they
found that the younger the person is the more text messages they send and receive in a day. In
the over 50 group, more than 80 percent send and receive fewer than 10 texts each day Teens text
and use social media much more and rely on it to contact friends. The study also showed that in
90% of all age groups made less than ten calls a day, so the only difference in age group is how
muchthey receive and send text messages. But in the end, we all use our phones for the same
reasons. I think we can all agree that cell phones have made our lives easier, but for some teens
face to face interaction has become harder for them. Texting is such an easy way to talk to
someone that it makes having a regular conversation seem harder. This can lead to bad
communication skills that you need to do important things such as applying for interviews we
won t know how to have proper communication , which can result in not getting the job. teens are
also known to get distracted by their phones while studying and as a student myself I know how
quickly you get get distracted on your phone while doing work. These distractions might lead to
bad grades and if students don t get good grades they might not get to go to a good college. So all
together, we can tell that cell phones are causing some problems for

Ralph Ellison s Invisible Man
Invisible Man
Summary One
In The Comic Book World of Ralph Ellison s Invisible Man, Jean Christophe Cloutier talks about
how Ellison s work was influenced by comic books. Ellison s influences included both comic
strips and movies. Cloutier states that Ellison s novel could depict a more elaborated and complex
picture compared to a comic strip that left an invisible mark on Invisible Man (313). The themes
that Ellison introduced in Invisible Man, that were pulled from comic books, included: violence,
young culture, heroism, and the life living in Harlem. Cloutier also states that both Ellison s work
and comic strips questioned whether American fantasies and myths contributed to an individual s
culture that would later lead to unrealistic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Afrofuturism. Afrofuturism is an international aesthetic movement concerned with the relations of
science, technology, and race (297). Yaszek says that its goal was to combat the whitewashed vision
of the future, adding a black face onto the future. This was because blackness was tied to the failure
of progress and technological catastrophe. Though Ellison did not consider himself to be within this
genre, Yaszek explained why his writings do fit within the criteria. Ellison rethinks reality and
history, by using Invisible Man, which enabled him to rewire the relation between technology, race,
and art in the novel. Afrofuturism is not just about reclaiming the history of the past, but about
reclaiming the history of the future as well (300). The future was set by the future industry, this was
the group that believed that blackness equals catastrophe throughout the world. Afrofuturists also
believe that technology should eliminate racial distinctions, getting rid of the digital divide . The
protagonist in Invisible Man began to understand this after he was hiding in the basement. Moving
into the basement allowed Invisible Man to master new

When the old man calls his father looney Teddy flips out. He starts kicking and punching even
though he s on the other side of the fence. This remains a problem with the group because they
have to spend time comforting him before they get back on the road again. On more than one
occasion Teddy got in small fights with almost all of the different group members. Teddy hinders
group development by forcing the group to devote time and effort to control his behavior.
Chris remains one of the leaders, but even at times presents a problem to the group. He has a
very tough attitude and almost gets his eye burned out in the beginning trying to stand up
against bigger, tougher kids. At the end of the movie he almost gets attacked with a knife for
mouthing off to the same group of kids, but Gordie bailed him out. By standing up against
difficult group members Gordie really showed his leadership skills. Gordie seems to have a lot of
personal issues with finding this dead body because of how often he thinks about his older
brother who had passed away. Gordie really takes this trip/adventure personally mainly because of
how close he feels to this dead body. Only a few months before this trip, Gordy s older brother
Denny had been killed in a car accident, and Gordy has been ignored at home since, which we see
in flashbacks. Gordy aspires to be a writer, but the only support he had came from his brother. Now

Thereby, although one might try to be specific in this scenario, the tendency of not being taken seriously by the receiver exist thus pose a hindrance to what might have been a successful communicationsession. For instance, during a recent conversation I had recently with my best buddy over coffee with some other of my closest childhood friends. She had wanted to create a compilation of us her oldest buddies, lip syncing and dancing to Justin Timberlake s cover version of Micheal Jackson s song love never felt so good and present it for an upcoming birthday of her girlfriend which she had been dating for a while. Anzac Legacy Research Paper I approvingly agree with the statement that the ANZAC legacy has survived to this day as Australians across the country commemorate them every year for their brave efforts; hundreds of thousands of men, women and children in Australia and overseas attend ANZAC day ceremonies and marches; and they represent us Australians. Source 1 and 2 describe and show the impacts of the war and the ANZACs efforts in the war. Body paragraph 1 The ANZAC legacy still remains because Anzac stood, and still stands, for reckless valor in a good cause, for enterprise, resourcefulness, fidelity, comradeship, and endurance that will never own defeat. On this day in 1915 Australian and New Zealand troops arrived at Gallipoli and in 1916 the day was named ANZAC day. Not only does ANZAC day remember the landing or anniversary but it is the day we remember all Australians who have served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. The courageous story of the landing at Gallipoli and the ANZACS are still remembered today. Memorial facilities and services are held at sunrise on 25 April, the time of the original landing, across the nation, usually at war memorials. This was started by returned soldiers after the First World War in the 1920s as a common form of commemoration. The initial official dawn service was held at the Sydney Cenotaph in 1927. It was the first year that all states acknowledged a public holiday. Primarily the services were only attended by veterans who followed the ritual of standing a moment of silence while listening to a lone piper playing the Last Post . Then later marches were held in most major cities and many families and other people joined and acknowledged them. History Of Science And Conceptual Understanding History of science and conceptual understanding According to Richard K Moran, and Page K, in Teaching for Conceptual Understanding in Science , Studying history of science is important because it enable students understand the development of thought, and generalization would be empty without concrete examples. In addition, One important concern for shutting history of science out of the undergraduate science curriculum was an anxiety expressed about the history of science that the history of science is composed of hypocrisy and skepticism science scoundrels , therefore, it is condemned by the scientific community. It also indicates that although there were early scientists naive thinking and ideas, such early thinking contribute to direct our present thinking and make students conceptual changes. It takes long time for students to make change and build their personal knowledge to become accepted. Moreover, it mentions that one important misconception about the history of science is there are no mistakes and wrong turns science has taken; the development of science is only thought is cumulative, and continuous in science from one generation to another one. Such an error is attributed to distorted histories of science; especially those found in science textbooks, and contribute to widening the gap between historian and students. Furthermore, it indicates that one important criteria of choosing between competing and alternative theories is those, which show ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. 18th Century Music During the 18th century, music was used as a social enhancement on the rising middle class who showed interest in intellectual ideals of Enlightenment. The rising middle class were people who would come between the working class and the upper class. Such as craftsman, bankers, and merchants. These select few decided that since they can now afford some of life s pleasures, that they would spend it on music that aristocrats and nobility would listen to. While on the other hand, during the 19th century, music began to develop a more story base theme with a moral lesson. Such as Ballets and Grand Operas. So basically, during the 18th 19th century, music has evolved from just sound or noise to a elegant and graceful story played through musical notation with different musical instruments while advancing the growth of the middle class. To begin with , the 18th century was the Classical era. In which music had order, symmetry, and formal restraint. Composers such as Franz Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven began creating music that pulled away from music that was mainly created for churches. This secular music they created became entertainment for the aristocrats and the nobility. A composer by the name of Johann Stamitz organized one of preliminary forms of the classical orchestra. This orchestra consisted of the string section, the woodwind section, the brass section, and the percussion section. The largest of the orchestra was called a symphony. ... ABSTRACT: Teaching philosophy and critical thinking is one of the main ways to clearly reaffirm the value of human persons and of goodness and freedom. It is not sufficient to propose a philosophical message, but we must teach it systematically (curriculum) with a real synergy between teachers and parents. We must also build a curriculum, which includes an evaluation model based on clear goals and objectives: the intermediateand final evaluation and assessment will enable us to be surethat we have reached our aim. It is also necessary to verify every step, evaluate it and compare it to the criteria (general project, goals, objectives) we put in our mind and use in our teaching. This critical evaluation needs methods and some teaching... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A problem arises about the teacher, whose duty would be to propose and not to impose his ideas: truth, freedom and human person could be at risk, particularly in developing situations. It is possible to overcome these problems by a philosophical education that could be able to teach critical thinking as a method to evaluate, assess and verify ideas, events and everything that is transmitted. This is a way philosophy can maintain its main traits. The present communication will say how we can teach philosophy, and how we can evaluate philosophical learning (High, 1991; O Loughlin, 1991), and how we can evaluate critical philosophical learning. The teaching of philosophy want to obtain the integral education of human person, to know the meaning of human existence and activiy (PIERETTI, 1991). • 9. Explanation, Understanding, and Subjectivity Essay Explanation, Understanding, and Subjectivity ABSTRACT: Many theorists of explanation from Hempel onward have worked with the explicit or implicit assumption that considerations of the subjective sense of understanding should be kept out of the formulation of a proper theory of explanation. They claim that genuine understanding of an event comes only from being in an appropriate cognitive relation to the true explanation of that event. I argue that considerations of the subjective sense of understanding cannot be completely removed from the process of formulating and justifying an acceptable theory of explanation. Although understanding is neither a necessary nor sufficient condition for an explanation, understanding is necessary as an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hence, we cannot say that anyone s sense of understanding is either necessary or sufficient for an account to be an explanation. However, I shall argue, we cannot completely avoid all reference to understanding in a correct theory of explanation. This situation presents a pressing problem for philosophical studies of the nature of explanation, for many theorists relegate the sense of understanding to a strictly derivative position by claiming that the subjective sense of understanding of an event comes, under appropriate (articulable) conditions, from consideration of a potential explanation, and that genuine understanding comes, under appropriate conditions, from consideration of the true explanation. (See, for example, Hempel 1948, 256 257.) According to such philosophers we should rely on a proper theory of explanation to delineate potential explanations from non explanatory accounts and a delineation of understanding will follow. I shall argue that this is not a workable option. One can also express the issue at hand in terms of the relative subjectivity or objectivity of explanation. Some theorists of explanation state an objectivity criterion for an account of explanation, and many others implicitly employ one. Wesley Salmon, for example, states clearly that the identifying criteria for scientific explanations must be objective, independent of personal, psychological considerations. ... Friends are people you confide in, people you go to when your feeling down, people you re the happiest with but for my friends it was just the opposite. As a friend you re supposed to comfort and compliment your friend so they don t feel so bad but no when she came to school I made her feel even worse, Why did you cut your hair? You could hear in her voice she was grief stricken, she cried everyday and as a friend you would think that I would comfort her, tell her everything was going to be ok and hug her as long as she needed me to. After the class, a Japanese teachers scolds and beats him simply because the song was of a foreign nature. The boy is defended by his own teacher, a Korean. The narrator lives with his mother, father, little sister and grandfather. As mentioned before, the narrator s family pressures him to be better than the Japanese students. Even though it is not responsible for the first attempts at horror movies, it certainly shaped the genre into what it is today and made it accessible to global audiences. The appearance of horror movies happens in cycles with a distinct pattern that repeats itself a movie appears, delivers thrills to the audience, and suddenly, due to low production costs, sequels and remakes are made, or original films based on the same formula. Hantke calls this the symptom of the crisis of contemporary American horror film (6). Some of these films did very well at the box office but most of them didn t, largely due to the loss of originality and the ability to surprise and shock, which stands at the basis of every successful horror film. The next step for the challenged horror industry was the process of transnationalization searching for inspiration outside familiar borders, more specifically turning to East Asia. The initial phase of J horror s rising popularity in the United States, for example, was largely driven by a search, on the part of hardcore fans, for more exotic and extreme forms of horror film. I grew up in sunny southern California on a horse farm. My first group of friends were the Hispanic kids that lived on our property. Their parents took care of the horses. Hugo, Jessie, Pita and I would play every day in the dirt pile at the barn. Hugo s mom cleaned our house and helped take care of me. We were inseparable. I had no idea they were any different than me until I started school. I think they felt the same. I attended a small, private Christian school from kindergarten to eighth grade. The majority of the kids were like me, white, and from the same economic background. We are wore uniforms, making us even more similar. My friends from the barn went to the public school down the street where they were not required to wear uniforms. By the fourth or fifth grade we stopped playing together in the dirt pile after school. We went our separate ways as we grew further and further apart. My next stop was high school. Cathedral Catholic was more of the same. The students were the same and more uniforms. I felt confined and I wanted a different experience. I did not want to be in such a small environment where everyone is the same. I never wanted to see another uniform! I wanted to be away from the uniform in every sense of the word. I wanted to be around different people and experience new things. I transferred to Torrey ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. How Did The Mongols Build The Empires In the thirteenth century, Genghis Khan infiltrated other cultures in order to build his empire. He did so very brutally, never backing down from opposition. One of the most important factors to his conquests were the use of horses, especially in war. In the spiritual realm, horses were of much importance as well. The Mongols utilization of horses as well as well equipped riders made conquering other lands not nearly as difficult as it had been for past empires. The use of horses quickly modernized civilization as a whole for the Mongols. Being nomads, horseback was a way to quickly move from place to place in a time where there was little transportation other than by foot. I decided to take my usual day long naps that seemed to repeatedly happen during the weekend. Once I woke up I was determined to go see what my family was up to, so I went up the stairs two at a time. When I got halfway up the stairs I remembered that I had to go to work in an hour. I skidded to a stop and barely stopped myself from plunging down the stairs that I had just ran up by gripping the handrail. Which was gratefully attached to the wall on the right of me. On the passenger side (my side) I watched as we slammed into a ginormous, giant semi truck, and I felt my heart rate go bezerk. I felt like it was a movie and I was watching this happen from above as my older sister wrenched the car to the left trying to get away from the enormous semi truck. I next heard a scream. After realizing that I screamed I put my hands over my mouth and had the audacity to feel embarrassed even in the scary situation that we were in. After the trauma of the moment and realizing that we were both okay, I look over to my sister who is holding the steering wheel like a death grip. I tell her that it was going to be ok and that she needed to pull off the road, so we found a clear spot to pull off to and then parked the now battered car. In Arthur Miller s The Crucible, all of these desires are common. Two Puritan ministers, Reverend Parris and Reverend Hale, have one similar motivation, the people of Salem, but they also have very different motivations, like reputation and truth, which are exposed as the play unfolds. Introduction When a system shows the employees of the organisation what the behaviours should and should not be, shares values and assumptions, it is termed as organisational culture. In 1980, Peter Waterman s book In Search of Excellence made the term organisational culturepopular. Organisational culture also helps individual employees, groups and the organisation as a whole to manage the assigned work and tasks and meet deadlines. Perhaps one of the most significant aspects of this writing is the glimpse that the reader gets into Rowlandson s faith and religion. Faith was a major aspect of life in the Colonial Period. It was of widespread belief that Godwas to be feared, and that he was the only way to redemption (Kizer). At this point Mary cannot seem to help but to contemplate why God is allowing the Indians to prevail in this war. There was no denying the stark differences between the victories of the English and the Indians. Consider the fact that the Puritans were Christians of the strictest variety, and they did not believe that the Indians were blessed with God s grace. It is quite understandable then that Mary would find it troubling that her people were suffering devastating effects of this war fought by people who were not even Christians. So she questions whether or not this is God s work. In the end she concludes that God is not helping the Indians, rather he knows that the English are not ready for his mercy, and her faith is restored once again (Rowlandson 450). As Mary s story unravels, she continues to suffer long hours of work, starvation, and separation from her family. She reads her holy bible and is constantly reminding herself that God is with her and will see her through these trials. Her spirits are lifted her master agrees to sell Mary to her husband, and her mistress begins the journey with her, but before long the mistress decides not to go any further and they turn back. • 27. Nuclear Power And Nuclear Energy On September 26th, Doctor Robert McTaggart came in and spoke to us about nuclear energy. Nuclear energy uses the heat produced from nuclear transformations and reactions to power turbines which create energy. A majority of the time, nuclear plants run off the fission of one of three elements: Uranium 235, Uranium 233, or Plutonium 239. Something else that Dr. McTaggart said that really stuck with me was that fissile isotopes like U 235 give off more energy than is put into the system. Currently in the US, nuclear powermakes up 8.3% of our country s total energy and all of the energy produced goes towards the electric power sector, where it makes up 22% of the total amount of electric power. Some advantages to the use of nuclear energy are that it has a carbon footprint of zero, it creates constant energy, and it has a low operating cost. With no incidents, nuclear power is very environmentally friendly, with no emissions and lots of power capacity. It is also very efficient because most of the time, the energy that is harvested out of nuclear fission is greater than the energy put in. The same thing cannot be said for any other resource, renewable or not. Once they are built, nuclear plants have a very low operating cost, making them economical after they are built. Some disadvantages to nuclear power are waste issues, high cost of building a power plant, and terrible ramifications is safety precautions are not met. The Embodiment Of Tradition In Kate Chopin s The Awakening Brian Sandoval10/27/17 Mr. AmorosoAP Literature Pd. 3 Awakening LAP Topic 4 Life has an abundance of crossroads that we must pass in order to reach the zenith of our long and arduous journey to self realization. One in particular is the decision to stay grounded in the relative safety of the earth or attempt to soar high in the vast sky amongst the birds and clouds. Many do not dare leave the comforts of the grass, haunted by the swift and deathly fall that is sure to follow and therefore mark anyone foolhardy to try as idiotic for even thinking of accomplishing the impossible. Yet who is the fool; the person brave enough to soar, willing to risk the unrecoverable drop down or the person who has already resigned to their position in the plains, content with this fate? Advantages Of Reciprocating Compressors 1.Introduction A Reciprocating compressor or piston compressor is a positive displacement compressor that uses pistons driven by a crankshaft to deliver gases at high pressure. All compressor types have a clearance volume that contains gas at the discharge pressure at the end of the discharge process. This volume may be small in some designs and significant in others. Reciprocating compressors may have a large clearance volume, but recover the work done on this gas by expanding it back to suction pressure in the cylinder. Reciprocating air compressors use positive displacement, which generates air pressure via two sides that provide either suction or discharge. Intercoolers are essential for two reasons. First, they cool the air down to a proper temperature to designed to remove moisture and water from the air. And Cuba Ben Monroe 23 April 2016 History 153 Professor Thompson The History of the U.S. and Cuba The United States is known for being one of the greatest and strongest countries in the world looking at past events and in this day and age. What might strike some people as shocking is that the U.S. would not be as strong without close ties with other countries or allies. Examples would be France, England, and Canada, plus many more. What people don t talk about is the U.S. s rivals or countries that the U.S. has had trouble with in the past leading up to now. One of the most renowned countries is only ninety miles away from the southern tip of Florida and that is Cuba. Cuba is known for the fantastic beaches, some of the most well known baseball players around, and, of course, Cuban cigars and rum. But, the past with Cuba is not as bright as the U.S. wants it to be because of historical events such as the embargo, the Bay of Pigs, and the Cuban missile crisis during World War II that caused the two countries to separate as allies and close tied nations. Over the past year the U.S. and Cuba have been trying to put the past behind them and have diplomatic and cultural relations once again. The last president to visit the nation of Cuba was President Calvin Coolidge in 1928. Since then there has many problems between the two nations. The Boxers were a group of Chinese peasants who despised every aspect of foreigners and sought vengeance for the series of humiliations that China had suffered. Their primary objective was to drive out all foreign influence out of China, which begs the question to what extent were the Boxers successful in their fight against Imperialism? Throughout the nineteenth century, China was threatened by the corruption of progress and foreign influence losing in both the Opium Wars and the Sino Japanese War because of their inferiority to the European military technology which reflected the level of corruption and military backwardness present... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Historian Victor Purcell s most widely held view of the Boxers is that they began as a conservative anti Qing movement; in other words, they opposed the existing government that started to conform to Western powers. The efforts of the Boxer Rebellionwas redundant in the sense that they led a reformation. Although the Chinese government was mainly conservative it was still being controlled by the foreign spheres of influence due to the unequal treaties signed to conclude the Opium and Sino Japanese Wars. The Boxers were becoming well known practice, as their continuous rampages and notable incidences linked to them gained the attention of conservative officials at the court, whom of which convinced the Empress Dowager Cixi to view the Boxers as a useful asset for resisting foreign pressure. Cixi had instructed provincial officials to not suppress the Boxers activities. Gaining the full support of the Qing government meant they could fully focus on foreigners from that point on. The Boxer s feat of gaining the support of the Qing government, which was being controlled by the West supports the notion that China managed to drive out a considerable amount of influence. In spite of the protest by the Western Powers and the ultimatum presented to Cixi, which was to legitimize the foreign suppression of the Boxers or to legalize the Boxer uprising and Collaborate with them. Empress Cixi chose the latter option because she believed that the Western powers were trying to revive the power of the pro western Emperor and use him a puppet to control China whose power was stripped away from ... • 41. Raising The Minimum Wage Of The United States Raise the minimum wage: In the United States, studies show that women tend to make up a disproportionate share of low wage workers. In the field of education, men tends to go more to STEM than women and that also leads to high paying jobs for men. If we raise the minimum wage, this will help hardworking women to support their families. Approximately, women made up two thirds of all minimum wageworkers in 2012. With the current federal minimum wagei.e. $7.25 per hour, someone working full time, only earn $15,080 a year round. People working full time with minimum wage is still below the povertythreshold for any family with children and single person is also not far above the poverty line. So, increasing the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour would help increase the wages for about 15 million women, which will help close the gender wage gap. Raise the tipped minimum wage: The gender wage gap is vividly observed in tipped workers. The federal tipped minimum wage, which hasn t been changed since 1991, only pays workers $2.13 per hour. According to the Economic Policy Institute, women make up two thirds of tipped workers and are 70 percent of food servers and bartenders, occupations that comprise more than half of the tipped workforce. All you do is write a quick text and press send, but the problem is when teens disconnect from their social media it is harder for them to be social face to face. Adults on the other hand use their cell phones a bit differently than teens. Studies have been made to compare how different age group use their precious cell phones that may or may not have changed their lives. Cell phones are very helpful because they make it much easier to get in touch with people and talk to them and without having to be with them at the time. But studies have shown that different age groups use their phones a bit differently. For example, a study done by the writer of Cell Phones are Changing Social Interaction, Deborah Forgays, and Jessie Schreiber compares how different age groups use their cellphones. In this study they found that the younger the person is the more text messages they send and receive in a day. In the over 50 group, more than 80 percent send and receive fewer than 10 texts each day Teens text and use social media much more and rely on it to contact friends. The study also showed that in 90% of all age groups made less than ten calls a day, so the only difference in age group is how muchthey receive and send text messages. But in the end, we all use our phones for the same reasons. I think we can all agree that cell phones have made our lives easier, but for some teens face to face interaction has become harder for them. Texting is such an easy way to talk to someone that it makes having a regular conversation seem harder.
