A zoetrope is a device that produces the illusion of motion from a series of static pictures branded around the inside of a spinning cylinder. Users look through slits in the cylinder to see animated sequences as the pictures rapidly pass by. While William Horner created the modern zoetrope in 1833, its origins can be traced back to ancient devices created in China in 180AD. The phenakistiscope, an early animation device, enabled the invention of the zoetrope in the 1800s.
