Lake Erie College Essay
Running head: SHORT TITLE
Title
Jazmine Banks
Lake Erie College
In the United States, the political system is dominated by two parties, democrats and republicans.
These organizations promote an idea and policy to win electrons. Over time these two parties ideology
switched rolls and changed. This paper will explain how they differ and favor one another. It will also
explain how they have changed over time. In July of 1854, the Republican Party was formed. This
group was created by a group of men who belonged to various splinter parties (PBS.). These founders
had opposed slavery, which made many of the republicans were liberal. Within the Republican Party
came former whigs and former free soil democrats to form majorities in nearly every Northern state.
In 1860 when Abraham Lincoln, republican candidate, became the president, slavery was abolished.
Then as time had progressed and the 1900s came strolling in, republicans embraced social
conservatism (Wiki). Where the democrats became more so liberal. President Franklin E. Roosevelt
came along and presented the New Deal. This drew in many of the new democratic party. The New
Deal became the response of the Great Depression. Many of the conservative republicans did not
favor this deal because Roosevelt was spending a lot more money than the amount of taxes coming in,
which put them in a disadvantage. Republicans also had complained that the New Deal

Prejudice in the Film American History X
Prejudice, a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or personal experience. The amount of
prejudice differs from person to person, but no one is free from it. In the film, American History X,
Derek is a great example of how prejudice someone can be. Derek agrees with the white power
movement because he feels victimized and threatened by everyone who is not white, but in prison he
learns his stereotypes are full of holes; from the film I learned there is no reason to hate one another
based on race or stereotypes. Life is too short to live a life based on hate. Throughout the film,
American History X, Derek feels victimized and threatened as a white American. He blames gangs,
blacks, immigrants and even his mentor Cameron for all of America s problems. For instance, in one
of the scenes in the film, both whites and blacks were playing basketball on the local basketball court.
After an argument with one of the blacks, Derek decides whoever wins the game keeps the court and
whoever loses leaves for good. If you win, we will walk outta here, but if we win, no bitching, no
fighting, right here in front of everybody you pack up your shit and get your black asses outta here
(American History X). The violent game came to an end and the black gang was kicked out. Instead of
kicking each other off the court, they should have shared at least half. However, Derek felt the black
people don t deserve to play on the same ground as the whites. Derek claims his fathers

needs of the Industry? Introduction Many students who are undertaking, or have completed a Beauty
Therapy qualification, do so on the assumption that the skills and qualifications they gain will be
enough to secure them a job in the industry. The Babtac website states that only 60% of graduates find
employment within the first 6 months of completing their training and only 45% are still in employed
in the industry after two years. The low percentages could be influenced by several factors including
the current economic backdrop, over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The History of Training As stated earlier in the paper the course content has undergone several
changes over the past 10 years. The beauty industry has continued to grow nationally through the
economic downturn, with an 18 percent increase in the number of salons nationwide over the past
three years. The cosmetology industry never dies down, even in a recession, says Michelle Woodard,
admissions coordinator for Douglas J Aveda Institute in Grand Rapids. Everyone will always want to
look beautiful. At the outset of this period there was little demand for specialised treatments.
Therefore, the training requirements were geared up to obtain a standard set of skills for all graduates.
Over the past 3 years, as treatments become more varied, the courses have had to adapt and offer more
diverse qualifications. The awarding bodies have had to be aware that during this period of transition
too many employers remain confused and bewildered by the skills infrastructure. (BBC News
13.11.08). This is due to the qualification constantly changing and salon owners not being made aware
of these changes. This has been a factor the awarding bodies have had to consider when implementing
any changes. Courses used to involve the student attending college 5 days a week. This has been
changed for two reasons. The colleges have looked to reduce costs whilst maintaining the same level
of attendees. Also, many students could not make

Insanity Essay
The distance between insanity and genius is measured only by success, as Bruce Feirstein would say.
The insane are merely the ones who are not given their chance to change the world. They are, instead,
locked away before society begins to take grip on the ravings of the mad man. Genius, on the other
hand, is what is created when the insane are given their time to speak out. When Renfield began to
address himself to the question he was confronted with, he did so with the utmost impartiality of the
completest sanity. This leads the astute reader to wonder if renfield was, in fact, completely sane but
driven to madness while being locked within the confines of an asylum. Even the sanest person may
have insane tendencies when over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Renfield was speaking to the men on various subjects, he stated that, I am at least as sane as the
majority of men who are in full possession of their liberties . Which shows that even the lunatic knows
that he is just as the rest of the world, and that he could handle himself in the real world. Many
lunatics could, in fact, be admitted into daily society. Dr. Seward does not know what it is like to be
insane, so he has no way of knowing what makes the insane differ from the sane. Seward stated that
he believes himself and the others insane and that he, expects them all to wake to sanity in strait
waistcoats. To put it simply, only the insane take themselves seriously. That is the genius showing
itself to the world. Seward stated that he was beginning wonder whether or not his habit of life
amongst the insane is beginning to tell upon his own mind. If that be so, he is gaining a valuable asset
in the fight against idiocy. Accepting insanity can create the balance needed to fully understand the
world in a way considered opposite of the rest of society. When Van Helsing was breaking the ice on
the existence of vampires, he mentioned that the teachings and records provide proof enough for sane
peoples. It is as though he is saying that even people that are completely sane should be able to
understand that vampires are, in fact, real. That creates an interesting

Whenever I read this quote I think optimism; if you re optimistic many doors will open. Well you may

For some people it may not seem bad to drink a coke while we eat: but in a day theirs three meals, and
if you times three time seven you will get twenty one cokes in a week. Twenty one coke in a week,
that s too much! As a result of drinking too much coke makes me more obsessed and helps promote
diabetes.
My second bad health habit is lack of drinking water. Doctor Howard Flaks mentioned that for a
healthy person the minimum of water they should consumed is eight to ten cups of water. It is sad to
admit that I don t even drink three cups of water. With this nonsense of mine, I am just harming
myself. The lack of water contributes to having more frequent headache, joint ache, and dryness of
eyes.
Getting a certain amount of sunlight is good for your health, but when you get too much hours of
sunlight it stops being so health for you. For my third bad health habit is that I spend too much time
outside with direct sunlight and no sun cream nor protection. Is my passion being outside especially in
the summer, I can spend hours and hours outside without even noticing it. The sad part is that I am
allergic to direct run light; if I spend about an hour outside with direct run light I will start to get this
type black spots in body. I have special medications and creams that I have use, but the problem is that
I always forget about them.
Procrastination, is one of the qualities that most college students share.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Patents
1. The market reward rationale for the patent system is based on the ability of patents to reduce
transaction costs and serve as a transferable asset, thereby allowing for inventor to control the supply
of the technology, and for the technology to maintain competitive pricing in the marketplace and
recover costs of invention. Specifically, a patent allows for disclosure which prevents inventors from
overlapping efforts or from keeping the technology a secret, thereby reducing transaction costs and
making it easier to work with interested parties. The transferability of the patented technology further
eases collaboration and commercialization efforts, allowing inventors work with appropriate
companies who are well able to commercialize the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If a company creates a new drug to treat a certain disease, for example, they can get a patent for it and
can charge supra competitive prices as they are the only market player, since the patent restricts other
competitors from manufacturing the same medication.
3. The Ex post rationale focuses on the economic functions of patents after they are granted, claiming
that the patent system incentivizes the technology to be constructively utilized, enhanced, and
commercialized post patent. In particular, this rationale holds that patents improve economic
efficiency (i.e. by reducing transaction costs, allowing for transferability divisibility, promoting
collaboration), allowing for a more efficient marketplace, and promoting investments in the patented
technology due to the chance of large rewards in the marketplace in return. For example, the
University of Illinois develops a significant amount of patented technology, including the Dry Grind
Corn Milling Process. The patent on this technology signifies to investors and other interested parties
in the important functions of the technology in terms of processing corn into more corn products, and
the fact that it was developed at a credited institution, initiating outside firms to invest in, enhance,
and commercialize the product, improving the technologies competitive edge in the marketplace. The
University of Illinois similarly has an incentive to ensure that the technology is productively

National Security Is More Important Than Human Rights
National Security is More Important than Human Rights
The conception of human rights and freedoms is the cornerstone of American traditions, law and the
indicator of democracy. The approach of prevailing interest in personal privacy, property privacy and
non interference of state authorities in private affairs is the basic ground for modern organization of
American society. For centuries the courts have been standing safeguards of protection of persons
against unreasonable intrusion of the State, generally interpreting the Constitution and the Bill of
Rights with preference of personal human rights protection. Nonetheless in the end of the 21st century
there appeared several factors which so much influenced our society that the matters ... Show more

In most of the cases opposing the concept of human rights to national security is erroneous and
unreasonable construction because the national security is the concept which precludes the physical
and mental security of all members of the society, and therefore includes and predetermines the
possibility of exercising human rights and freedoms. Without security the well being is impossible.
Looking at the national security vs. human rights question from the points of view of internal and
external national security, one should first examine what concrete human rights may be waived or
limited for the homeland security and protection purposes. Natural human rights like the right for life
are not the subject to address in this essay. The rights addressed in this essay are defined primarily in
the U.S. Bill of Rights. These are civil right for privacy, the right of peaceful protest, the right to
personal freedom, the right to a fair trial and the right of equal protection, usually in the list of the
rights which under certain conditions may be waived for the efficiency of homeland security and
protection.
The first argument supporting the statement that national security is more important than protection of
individual rights is the increased threat of terroristic attacks, which are very dangerous, carefully
planned, locally targeted and generously funded

Theme Of Innocence In Sense And Sensibility
Finally, in Austen s Sense and Sensibility the idea of Innocence is embodied in the figure of Marianne,
as we can see in several passages of the text: Beyond you three, is there a creature in the world whom
I would not rather suspect of evil than Willoughby, whose heart I know so well? Elinor would not
contend, and only replied, Whoever may have been so detestably your enemy, let them be cheated of
their malignant triumph, my dear sister, by seeing how nobly the consciousness of your own
innocence and good intentions supports your spirits. It is a reasonable and laudable pride which resists
such malevolence. (Austen 140) Marianne is almost a child, she is only seventeen, and thus she is

the child has a wider overview of the world given that he has not lost the innocence that characterizes
him; there is something magical, pure and divine in a child s vision of the world and that is what the

`` A Cyborg Manifesto `` By Manfred E. Clynes And Nathan...
The cyborg figure is a common fixture in both science and science fiction. The term, coined by
Manfred E. Clynes and Nathan S. Kline in 1960, refers to an organism with enhanced functionality
due to the incorporation of a mechanical component (Clynes and Kline, 27). The animal machine
hybrid was a figuration and embodiment of the modern era s lust for technology as a means of pushing
the human towards what was often militaristic and capitalist ideals. However, in her groundbreaking
essay A Cyborg Manifesto , Donna Haraway appropriates the patriarchal cyborg figure for feminist
purposes, drawing on its composited ontology as a model for female liberation. Her essay posits a
psychological escape from the dualisms that hamper the female sense of self, through its account of
boundary breakdowns and its rejection of totalized identity. This psychological escape becomes active
politically when applied to challenge the authority of the physical acts of oppression where these
dualisms often manifest. However, the manifesto s inability to entirely account for cultural
differentialism within feminism causes it to fall somewhat under Haraway s goal of promoting the
particular female self.
First published in 1985 as part of The Socialist Review and later updated in 1991 as part of her
anthology of essays Simians, Cyborgs, and Women (the latter of which will be the version analyzed),
Donna Haraway s A Cyborg Manifesto constructs a feminist call to action by situating a myth of the

Life Of The American Born British Inventor Hiram S. Maxim
The Life of Sir Hiram S. Maxim
John Hernandez
Southeastern Oklahoma State University Abstract
The objective of this research paper is to document the life of American born British inventor Hiram
S. Maxim. The topics include an introduction into his early life, his many job experiences, his
inventions and the ensuing success. His success then allowed him to follow his interests in aviation.
The method of research is primarily from biographies, encyclopedias, published articles, and various
internet resources. Much of the history documented about him deals with the invention of the Maxim
machine gun. Although this invention was undoubtedly his biggest success, it is only a fraction of how
he became an import figure in the field of science ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His employer Daniel Sweat owned a mill that had become infested with mice. This inspired him to
begin working on an automatic mousetrap. He perfected the invention and in doing so got rid of the
rodent problem that was plaguing his employer s mill. Many consider this to be his first notable
invention, although he did seek out a patent for it.
His other professions included an instrument maker and a mechanical draftsman. He worked for his
uncle, Levi Stephens, at an engineering firm in Massachusetts. While in Boston he worked at a
scientific instrument shop and later went on the work at a shipbuilding firm in New York. These
various experiences gave him the skill to create more inventions.
In 1866, at the age of 26, he received his first official patent for a curling iron. He also invented a
coating for blackboards that was so successful that large numbers of his specially coated blackboards
were sold throughout North American (Dartford Technology). These inventions were followed by a
machine that would produce illumination gas and a locomotive head lamp.
These inventions combine with wealth of experience at a seemingly early age got the attention of
Spencer D. Schuyler, founder of the United States Electrical Lighting Company. In 1878 he was
appointed chief engineer of the first electric lighting company in the U.S. It was there he began
working on various electrical devices and solidified his importance in the field of science and

We waited 1 minute. The colour on the pad was compared with the colour chart to see the nitrate level.
The nitrate level was recorded. Then a phosphate test was carried out. Firstly 5ml of the water from
the river was placed in a container. There were two reagents. 5 drops of reagent 1 and 1 micro spoon
of reagent 2 was added to the water. The lid was replaced and the container was shaken. We waited 2
minutes and took the lid off. The colour of the mixture was compared with the colour chart and the
phosphate content was recorded. Then the oxygen test was carried out. The meter was set for air and
the probe was placed in the air. His was set as 100%. The probe was then placed in the river and the
reading went down or up comparing its oxygen content with the oxygen in the air. Finally the
temperature of the water was measured. This was done using a thermometer.
At each sight we also noted down descriptions of the site e.g. the surrounding land use, the cleanliness
of the water, the depth and width of the river. This was done so that the pollution of the river could be
explained.
Safety
While doing the freshwater fieldwork there were a few safety hazards. There was a chance of infection
occurring e.g. Weils Disease. Therefore I had to take precautions: 1) small cuts covered with tape, 2)
gloves worn, 3) no eating or drinking in the field, 4) no fooling

The Effects Of Using Student Self Assessment And Progress...
At RA Jones Middle School, math and reading achievement is low. According to the 2014 2015
School Report Card from the Kentucky Department of Education, 42.2% of Rector A. Jones Middle
School students are proficient/distinguished in reading and 26.3% are proficient/distinguished in math.
As a middle school math and science teacher, I want to give my students tools that they can use to
help them be successful in any subject area, in their current lives and in their futures. It is important
that middle school teachers help students develop into independent thinkers that take responsibility for
their own learning and achievement (Lines, 1994). One tool that can be beneficial to students as they
progress through school and beyond is the use of self assessment. The purpose of this study is to
investigate the effects of using student self assessment and progress monitoring strategies on student
achievement in sixth grade. Student self assessment and progress monitoring is a process of formative
assessment, during which students reflect on and evaluate the quality of their work and their learning,
make judgments on whether they met the stated goals or learning criteria, identify strengths and
weaknesses in their work, and revise accordingly (Spiller, 2012). Specific research questions that will
be answered after this study concludes are as follows:
1. What is the effect of self assessment/progress monitoring strategies on student achievement based

Bell Curve Grading
Bell Curve Scoring Whenever you hear the phrase graded on a curve the class splits into two types of
people: the confident and the terribly stressed. In my school, there is an established grading scale
meaning whatever score an individual gets on an assignment is comparable to a rubric and gets a score
based on his sole abilities. Grading on a curve is a bit different. This grading method calculates the
average grade and determines how each student compared to the average. Bell curve grading doesn t
measure how much of the material a student retained, per say, but instead, how much more (or less)

Active Learning Techniques Provide Opportunities For...
Massey, Brown, and Johnson (2005) suggested that active learning techniques provide opportunities
for faculty to increase social presence, engage students, and positively enhance performance. Studies
have shown that students tend to learn more when they actively participate in the learning process
through discussing, practicing, reviewing, and applying knowledge to develop new meanings
(Mcalpin, 2015). Maki and Maki (2007) found that online instruction required the application of
strong methodology along with providing students with opportunities to interact with each other and
the instructor. Aside from purposeful course design, active learning in an online course requires
instructors to be actively involved in the learning process (Gayton McEwen, 2007; Young, 2006). This
involvement includes, but is not limited to, minimal participation in discussion boards, course
announcements, e mail, and other forms of web based communication (Dixon, 2010). However
Dennen, Aubteen Darabi, and Smith (2007) warned that too much active participation by the instructor
has been shown to result in decreased student participation. The purpose of this study was to design an
asynchronous online course that integrates active and engaging learning strategies tied to social
presence theory to increase student satisfaction, retention, and to serve as a model master course for
other online instructors at Western Piedmont Community College (WPCC). This paper provides

The Drug Of The United States
The United States prohibits the use of narcotics such as marijuana, heroin, cocaine, and
methamphetamine. The government of the United States continues to be at war preventing these drugs
from being smuggled across borders, but one major supplier that causes a difficulty in that operation is
known as El Chapo . Most underground drugs today come from a cartel in Mexico because the drugs
are inexpensive (Schuppe). Throughout his life, Joaquin El Chapo Guzman Loera has smuggled over
one million pounds of narcotics into the United States, and backboned the United States drug market
(Ware). Joaquin Guzman had a hard beginning in life, starting with his struggling childhood, which
influenced him to get involved in the drug trade and led to his control over the Sinaloa Cartel, then he
proved that he was the ultimate drug lord by his escapes.
El Chapo had it rough starting from the beginning. He was born in Badiraguato on April 4th, 1957,
although some rumors have it that he was born on December 25, 1954; then his parents moved to
Sinaloa to support their basic needs (Aldrich). Joaquin grew up in the district of Sinaloa where he
lived with his parents, two younger sisters, and younger brothers. Sources believe he had three
additional younger brothers, who apparently died from natural causes ( Joaquin El Chapo Guzman:

Ohm s law From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This article is about the law related to electricity.
For other uses, see Ohm s acoustic law. V, I, and R, the parameters of Ohm s law. Ohm s law states
that the current through a conductor between two points is directlyproportional to the potential
difference across the two points. Introducing the constant of proportionality, the resistance,[1] one

equation in the field of electrical/electronic engineering because it describes how voltage, current and
resistance are interrelated on a macroscopic level, that is, commonly, as circuit elements in an
electrical circuit. Physicists who study the electrical properties of matter at the microscopic level use a
closely related and more general vector equation, sometimes also referred to as Ohm s law, having
variables that are closely related to the V, I, and R scalar variables of Ohm s law, but which are each

Scripture And Cosmogony
The Sacred Scripture and Cosmogony of Islam and Christianity In every religion around the world,
there are very important scriptures and beliefs on how the universe came into being. Christianity and
Islam are no different than any other religion in those aspects. They have similar thoughts on things in
the sacred scriptures they have, and they also have opposing views. Also, these two religions have
different views on the creation of the universe, both of these topics will be discussed here. It is
important to understand the views on the following topics by these two religions for a number of

Much of the New Testament talks about the life of Jesus, and these books were written by Jesus
disciples. The original texts that made up the Bible are gone or lost, and have been copied various
times to preserve the teachings. The Bible is broken down in ways like the Qur an. First, it is broke
into two Testaments , one is called the Old Testament, which was originally written in Hebrew. The
Old Testament talks about the creation of the world to the laws a person should follow. The second
half is called the New Testament, was written in Greek, and much of this talks about the life and
teachings of Jesus Christ. It also has letters written by leaders of the early church (Geoghegan, 14),
and also has the end of the time prophecies. In each of the Testaments there are books (think of the
chapters of a novel), here are a total of 66 books in the Bible that we have today, in each book there
are also verses like in the Qur an. The contemporary expression of the Christian Bible is just as import
as the Qur an for a Muslim. There are a few slight differences though. Many people go to church to
praise and worship God and a pastor gives a lecture about a subject in the Bible, Muslims would read
a passage from the Qur an and then explain how it applies to their lives. A Christian could (and does)
do this, but typically it isn t as rigid of a structure. However, there are many different branches of
Christianity from Baptist to Catholic, and they each have

¡§Texts both inform us of the social identities available to us, and problematize them; both police our
social selves and subvert them.¡¨
Both texts, The Crying Game by Neil Jordan and Loaded by Christos Tsiolkas, use
characters within the discourse to project social identities that have been
problematized due to social constraints. Throughout this essay, I will focus on
sexuality, as this type of social identity has been depicted as a central theme in both
texts. The characters from the texts work to, police and subvert their own sexual
identities within their social milieu.

Casti Connubai On Christian Marriage
1. Christ dignified chaste wedlock before the coming of Christ by establishing it as a form of
companionship between two people who will come together to have children. He designed this union
to be the foundation of society. Christ further dignified wedlock by taking the Church as His bride.
2. In Casti Connubii on Christian Marriage, Pope Pius XI lists two things men must do to obtain the
fruits of the sacrament of matrimony. The first is to be enlightened and fully understand Christ s true
doctrine regarding matrimony itself. The second is to still remain pure in their thoughts and actions in
order to obtain true peace and happiness for themselves and for their families .
3. a. The Pope sees a need to speak about the sanctity of marriage at this time because he saw that the
people of his day were beginning to forget the importance of a holy marriage. It especially applies
today with the leniency of how human intimacy is treated. Knowing this, the Pope spoke of it to
remind people the importance of a Holy Christian marriage. b. We know the Pope is teaching
infallibly here because he is re explaining a teaching already in practice. He doesn t add anything to
the core of the teaching, which is to avoid temptation in the context of human intimacy, by shows
specifically the temptations presented at that time in which the faithful should avoid. We can further
confirm that the Pope speaks infallibly because all teachings of the Pope come from God, and there
cannot be a fallible teaching from God Himself.
5. a. The point of Arcanum Divinae , as explained by Pope Pius XI, was to concentrate of matrimony
as a divine institution and it s sacramental and perpetual stability. He used this Encyclical specifically
as a reference and foundation for his own Encyclical. The only difference being that Arcanum Divinae
speaks of the spiritual aspects of the sacrament while the Casti Connubii speaks of both the
sacramental and the earthly systems and their effect on the lives of men. b. Man cannot change the
laws that strengthen marriage because such laws were not created by man. It is a fundamental doctrine
that the institution of matrimony and its laws were written by God. Since God is infallible, and

1984 Technology Analysis
In George Orwell s 1984 novel, the government known as Big Brother controlled and monitored the
citizens by numerous types of technology. The technology used were telescreens, thought police, the
government was able to get complete control over the people of Oceania. While the ideas of
technology were ahead of the actual time frame of the novel, they should be dismissed. While our
technology continues to develop over time, there is not a way of telling how it will affect the future in
the book. If it gets put into the wrong hands, important information and technology can be very
harmful as shown in the novel 1984. With the modernization of technology in 1984 takes the form, it

Theme Of Communication In The Movie Crash
An Analysis of the Communication used in Crash by Paul Haggis The movie Crash shows the hostility
between characters of different backgrounds, primarily through their interactions and dialect, to prove
that everyone experiences discrimination and racism in their lives no matter their race, religion, sexual
orientation, age, etc. Director Paul Haggis focuses on language, behavior, and stereotypes to convey
the different kinds of communication used between the diverse races and ethnicity groups that are
shown throughout the film. The textbook, Understanding Human Communication, defines human
communication as the process of creating meaning through symbolic interactions, but this process is
much more intricate than this definition makes it out to be (Adler, 5). Through my own analysis of the
plot and various storylines, I will discuss the concepts and principles of communication used to
portray the injustice of racial stereotyping and persecution in today s society.
Three specific concepts of communication from Understanding Human Communication I recognized
in the movie include the process of forming self perception and perceptions of others, stereotyping,
and the power of language, more specifically connotative language. Stereotyping is defined as the
perceptual process of applying exaggerated beliefs associated with a categorizing system (Adler, 49).
In Crash, two young men interact for the first time toward the end of the plot, a white police officer

Effects Of Stress In Nursing
Workplace stress is investable. Job pressures, deadlines, difficult boss, case over loads, difficult
colleagues and difficult customers can be a source of stress to many workers. The nursing profession
is also filled with elements that can lead to extreme stress and often times these stress can lead to
health hazards and risks. In this paper, the source of stress in the nursing profession will be evaluated,
What is stress?
To understand the source of stress in the nursing profession, it is important to know the meaning and
nature of stress. According to Tummers (2010) Stress is the feeling people have when they are under
pressure. Stress can also mean the response of the body to pressure or stressors. The body response to
stress is always multi systematic which means that several bodily functions are involved from
metabolism to memory (Gibbons, 2012). Stress affects memory so people become forgetful.
Forgetfulness is a very dangerous consequence of stress in the Nursing profession. If Nurses forget the
amount of dosage to be given to a patient, the result could be fatal.
Stress is not always a bad thing. Stress can improve motivation while low stress job can decreased
motivation. When a job is low stress, employees get bored. Most employees fight boredom by going
to movies or walking in the park. When staffs such as nurses get bored, their motivation to work is
lessened hence their performance level goes down. When, the job is stressful, workers become highly
motivated

Huck Finn Pros And Cons
Mark Twain s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is widely regarded as a classic. It is on a great
majority of high school reading lists due to its themes and significance to American history. Many
famous writers sing praises to this story, with Ernest Hemingway going so far as to call it one of the
first true pieces of Americana. However, with overwhelming praise comes an absurd amount of
backlash at the novel. Even when the book was released, it was pulled from library shelves, and today
it is one of the most banned books in the United States. Many have criticized the novel over its ending,
and more commonly the books usage of racist terms. With that said, Huckleberry Finn should remain
on the high school reading list on account of its historical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As previously established Huck Finn is a book that is without a doubt made to challenge readers, its
realistic settings and dialects make a reader imagine exactly how these characters speak and think of
what it was like. This makes the commentary on slavery even harder since it s harder to separate these
characters from reality. Censoring the dialogue, particularly offensive phrases neuters this point and
takes an otherwise invested reader out of the story. Michiko Kakutani, writer for the New York Times
says it perfectly in his article about Huck Finn and censorship when he writes, To censor or redact
books on school reading lists is a form of denial: shutting the door on harsh historical realities
whitewashing them or pretending they do not exist (Kakutani). If we change Huck Finn not only are
we breaking investment, but we re spitting on Twain s grave as he rolls over in it. Or as Spicer,
somewhat more eloquently puts it, We read for a purpose, whether leisurely or intellectually, and
authors write for a purpose. If we censor author s words, we censor their purpose, and their readers
minds can never be opened for further exploration of the world. (Spicer). While some want to change
the way Huck Finn is written in order to make it school friendly, it s worse than banning it, if it s
banned it won t create an even more skewed perception of the time period. But with that said, banning
it is also awful and completely undercuts Twain s work, and thinks that children in a high school
setting need to be spoon fed their information since they can t think for themselves; like they can not
think beyond the surface of a piece of writing. But even with all that people still think this book

Hannibal makes the romance between Will and Hannibal very tasteful and realistic. Their feelings for
the other grow slowly, there is not one point when you can definitively say that this is when their
feelings begin. It is just an easy, natural progression of their relationship. I admit that the romantic
undertones of Hannibal and Will s interactions were what initially led me to watch the show, but I
ultimately fell for the masterful writing that Bryan Fuller, the creator, created with Mads Mikkelsen.
The NBC revival of Hannibal shows Dr. Hannibal Lecter before Silence of the Lambs, before his
imprisonment. It follows Will Graham, a gifted FBI profiler with the ability to see into the mind of
anyone he chooses. This ability takes a great toll on Will s mental stability and because of this, he is
forced to take on a psychiatrist, Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen). Hannibal s initial goal is to
manipulate the FBI from within but he unexpectedly finds himself captivated by Will. Due to Will s
instability, it is easy for Hannibal to push the bounds of Will s mind in order to make him realize his
true, beautiful potential...as a killer ( Hannibal (TV series) ).
The NBC reincarnation of Hannibal deliberately paints a very human monster. In an interview with a

wealth distribution, a social injustice
Is Wealth Distribution Today Just?
In current times we often observe that many members of our society receive less than other members
regardless of whether they are no less deserving. In contrast, there are some who have ownership over
assets and earn income that they may not be deserving of. The distributive balance is upset and wealth
distribution today can thus be seen as a social injustice. This injustice that is becoming more
noticeable as people start to become aware of the facts, as we can see through the start of the occupy
wall street movements that, first started on wall street in America, have spread to other countries (one
of which being Australia). As a consequence of how wealth is habitually distributed and the way in ...

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the wealthiest 20% account for 62% of total
household net worth, with an average net worth of $2.2 million per household while the poorest 20%
of households account for only 1% of total household net worth, with an average net worth of $31,829
per household. This can be at least partly attributed to a decrease in tax rate increments. The statistics
draw on the selected income distribution indicators, which specify disposable household income
(money that can be kept and spent for recreational purposes), show that those individuals in the high
income bracket receive 40% of their total income while those in the low income bracket only receive
10%. Consequently, the net worth across households becomes even less matched as the rich not only
have a considerably higher income, but are also able to save up much more. The discrepancies
between the net worth in households are therefore exponentially larger than the discrepancies that
exist in income, which reflects the previously mentioned pattern of people accumulating wealth
through their working lives. The indignant attitudes posited by the movement can therefore be seen as
justified. However, thought it may be justified, the movement seems to lack a focused goal they
demand that some change is needed so that the situation regarding inequality can be rectified, but their
demands fail to offer articulated strategy as to how this can be

How Does Mayella Ewell Gain Power In To Kill A Mockingbird
Power can be obtained in many ways, however, there are three main ways to gain power. One could
gain power through their social class, race or gender. Many people throughout history have gained
power in one of these three ways. In Harper Lee s novel To Kill A Mockingbird, power is a common
theme. In this book, Mayella Ewell, a poor, 19 year old white girl, accuses a black man named Tom
Robinson of raping her. Mayella Ewell may not have power in regards to her social class or gender,
she does have power in regards to her race. Mayella is not powerful when it comes to her social class.
Her father, Bob Ewell, has ruined the family s reputation by being known as the town drunk and living
in a dump that was previously a negro cabin. In the novel it states, Maycomb s Ewells lived behind the
town garbage dump in what was once a negro cabin (Lee Document A). The Ewells live in a dump
that used to be owned by negros which is considered the lowest of lows, due to their social class. In
the book, Atticus explains, He thought he d be a hero, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of her race, she also has the upper hand in her court case. During the case, there was some
controversy when it came to addressing others like, Long s he keeps callin me ma am and Miss
Mayella... Are you being impudent to me boy? (Lee Document C). Due to the fact that Mayella is
white, she was treated better in court by being called ma am and Miss Mayella , unlike Tom Robinson
who was referred to as Boy . During court Atticus referred to Mayella as ma am which she is not used
to Ma am? Asked Atticus, startled, Long s you keep makin fun o me (Lee Document C). Because of
Mayella s social class, she is not used to being treated well and gets offended when she mistakes
Atticus kindness for sass. In total, Mayella does not have power because her gender and social class

The Sower, By Vincent Van Gogh
Vincent Van Gogh was a man in crisis during the late 1880 s. In his painting The Sower, the person
planting the seeds is wearing all black and has no face. Painting someone in all black is a
representation of Van Gogh s sorrow. Not giving the sower a face is a way of expressing that Van
Gogh may think that he has no soul or identity, that he is not deserving of one. A person who was not
in crisis would have given the person some character, using vibrant colors to display their emotions
and expressions. In the article, Van Gogh s Life , Van Gogh says, The orchards stand for pink and
white, the wheatfields for yellow. He has identified each season and subject with a color. There is not
much detail in his painting. The color association to

The Medieval Castles Of The Middle Ages
There was time between the fall of the Roman Empire and the reformation. This was called the middle
ages. This time was crammed with war, the struggle for power, disease, and illiteracy. Although, there
was much intelligence that was sparked around this time (Castles of the Middle Ages). The first castle
was introduced in 1066. This gigantic beauty was named the Motte and Bailey and was constructed in
England (Motte and Bailey Castles). Castle designs soon spread throughout Europe. This was a way to
defend royalty and ended up being a big advantage when used against their enemies (Middle Ages).

damp, and the floors were bare stone and sometimes covered with the skin of animals. In this day of
age, it was better to be living in a gloomy, gross place than being without defense (Middle Ages for

The Five Stages In The Development Of Human Growth And...
While reading through Chapter 1, there were a lot of eye openers. While reading, the realization of
important factors that determines what kind of adult a child will be. Two developments of human
growth are Continuous and Discontinuous. Continuous Development is the process in which there is
gradual improvement through systematic exercise, and Discontinuous Development is based off the
stepping stones of infant through adulthood human growth (Woolfolk Perry, 2015). These are
characterized by the qualitative differences in behavior. As children grow from prenatal, ages 0 to 2
years old, to becoming an adolescence, 11 and above, they can learn and better understand what is
going on in the world around them, which in turn teaches a life lesson. There are 5 stages in the
development of life for a human. The five stages are prenatal (conception to birth), infancy (birth to 2
years), early childhood (ages 2 to 6), middle childhood (ages six to eleven), and adolescence (11 and
up). Throughout each stage, there are new developments that take place in a child s life. Many factors
go into growth development and how a child will turn out as an adult, including but not limited to,
social skills, sociodemographic, ethnicity and culture, adoption or biological, protection and risk,
health, corporal punishment, environmental, parental/sibling relationships, risk taking, and self
regulation (Shriver, 2014). As a parent, I never realized how many factors that there are, yet my family

Modern Day Cigarette Analysis
Modern day media uses several tactics to convey important messages. This public service
announcement uses tactics that allow the public to focus on the topic cigarettes. In the past, before
advanced medical knowledge, society did not frown upon cigarettes. Medical professionals once
considered cigarettes good for one s health. Also, they did not think cigarettes had any negative
consequences to the body. Today, we know from doctors and other sources cigarettes are very
detrimental to one s health. However, many people continue to use cigarettes and other tobacco
products. For instance, the younger population of cigarette smokers tends to start smoking because
their friends smoke. This invite to smoking acts as peer pressure. Most of the time, young people tend
to give in to peer pressure. Therefore, more and more people start smoking regardless of the fact that
cigarettes are very damaging to a person s health. After so much use of cigarettes, death becomes
closer as opposed to a normal life without cigarettes. This public service announcement states the
message that smoking cigarettes can cause one s own death. The cigarette in his mouth illustrates this
topic. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

smokeless tobacco, such as chewing tobacco. Cigarettes main route of consumption is smoking. A
smoker lights the end of a cigarette, inhales the burned tobacco, and then exhales. The picture
demonstrates this method of consumption by the cigarette s placement in the male s mouth. The
cigarette is the picture s tactic of describing the topic of the message. This public service
announcement is not about tobacco products. More specifically, the message pertains to cigarettes
which contain the product tobacco. Thus, inhaling the dangerous substance into the body is a slow act

The central aim of space exploration and its chief inspiration during the 1960s was the landing of
instruments and men on the moon and planets, in particular to search for any sign of life.
When asked, What is the scientific value of sending men into space? Anatoly Blagonravov one of the
chief architects of the Soviets Unions space achievements answered, I quite agree that modern
techniques [of automatic instrumentation] permit us to solve all the scientific problems we set
ourselves. But I do not exclude that in the further development of space techniques the personal
participation of Man may be of great interest and importance. Independently of the perfection of
automatic machines, Man must see with his own eyes what is going on in space.
The Americans and the Soviet Space Program were both involved in man in space programs, but
unlike the Russians they were not inclined to minimize the scientific merits of the operation. Scientists
of the United States will welcome this technological achievement by Soviet engineers and medical
experts and by the Soviet astronaut, because it represents a further step in the exploration of space and
will inevitably add to Man s knowledge about himself and the universe in which he lives.

The Themes in Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown Essay
The Themes in Young Goodman Brown
In Nathaniel Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown the reader finds several themes. These will be
discussed in this essay.
Morse Peckham in The Development of Hawthorne s Romanticism explains what he interprets
Hawthorne s main theme to be:
Once the self has been redeemed from society it can be explored in its own terms, and for this purpose
Hawthorne developed his peculiar use of emblematic allegory. . . . This technique, though Hawthorne
s is different from that of European writers, creates analogies between self and not self, between
personality and the worlds. . . .Henceforth Hawthorne s theme is the redemption of the self through the
acceptance and exploitation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The humor in Young Goodman Brown is not so apparent to this reader as is the love; I refer to the
deep love which Goodman has for his wife, Faith. When he says goodbye and starts down the street,
headed for the forest, the protagonist really feels a deep consideration for Faith s feelings:
Poor little Faith! thought he, for his heart smote him. What a wretch am I, to leave her on such an
errand! She talks of dreams, too. Methought, as she spoke, there was trouble in her face, as if a dream
had warned her what work is to be done tonight. But, no, no! twould kill her to think it. Well; she s a
blessed angel on earth; and after this one night, I ll cling to her skirts and follow her to Heaven.
This love of Brown s continues throughout the tale. Enroute along the path with the sinister fellow
traveler, Goodman repeatedly recalls his feelings for his wife:
Well, then, to end the matter at once, said Goodman Brown, considerably nettled, there is my wife,
Faith. It would break her dear little heart; and I d rather break my own!
Friend, said he, stubbornly, my mind is made up. Not another step will I budge on this errand. What if
a wretched old woman do choose to go to the devil, when I thought she was going to Heaven! Is that
any reason why I should quit my dear
Faith, and go after her?
Faith! shouted Goodman Brown, in a voice of agony and desperation; and the echoes of the

What Is My Favorite Season Of Autumn
Bare Branches
When autumn begins the atmosphere is different, the air is crisp and the ground is crunchy with
leaves. There s a heavy light that falls over the earth, red and orange light hit the hilltops just perfectly
at sunset. The beauty in autumn is one I will never get over, the memories it brings when I feel the
cold air hit my skin is all worth the leaves falling and showing their bare branches. Autumn is my
favorite season because of the weather, the beauty it has, and the comfort it brings to me.
Finally getting relief from the hot summer sun is one of my favorite reasons why I adore autumn. I m
always anxious waiting for the day I can shut off my air conditioner and open a window to reveal the
sweat breeze. The neutral temperature is perfect for outdoor activities. Like grilling for a BBQ, taking
a long walk or hike, or playing some games outside. Breathing in the natural air always feels amazing,
it makes it easier. Sweating is not ideal, so when its autumn and the hot weather is finally gone I feel a
sense of relief that I m not drenched from head to toe.
My favorite thing to do during fall is watch the leaves change colors, and then fall to reveal the
beautiful bare branches. The vibrant colors that bounce off the leaves make my mood shift. I ... Show

down on the couch, wrap myself up in a cozy blanket and watch movies with friends and family. The
food has to be the ultimate best part of autumn. Not only is everything warm and delicious, but mostly
pumpkin flavored! The sweet treats, like Carmel apples and pumpkin pie are just a few of my favorite

  • 4. Lake Erie College Essay Running head: SHORT TITLE Title Jazmine Banks Lake Erie College In the United States, the political system is dominated by two parties, democrats and republicans. These organizations promote an idea and policy to win electrons. Over time these two parties ideology switched rolls and changed. This paper will explain how they differ and favor one another. It will also explain how they have changed over time. In July of 1854, the Republican Party was formed. This group was created by a group of men who belonged to various splinter parties (PBS.). These founders had opposed slavery, which made many of the republicans were liberal. Within the Republican Party came former whigs and former free soil democrats to form majorities in nearly every Northern state. In 1860 when Abraham Lincoln, republican candidate, became the president, slavery was abolished. Then as time had progressed and the 1900s came strolling in, republicans embraced social conservatism (Wiki). Where the democrats became more so liberal. President Franklin E. Roosevelt came along and presented the New Deal. This drew in many of the new democratic party. The New Deal became the response of the Great Depression. Many of the conservative republicans did not favor this deal because Roosevelt was spending a lot more money than the amount of taxes coming in, which put them in a disadvantage. Republicans also had complained that the New Deal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Prejudice in the Film American History X Prejudice, a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or personal experience. The amount of prejudice differs from person to person, but no one is free from it. In the film, American History X, Derek is a great example of how prejudice someone can be. Derek agrees with the white power movement because he feels victimized and threatened by everyone who is not white, but in prison he learns his stereotypes are full of holes; from the film I learned there is no reason to hate one another based on race or stereotypes. Life is too short to live a life based on hate. Throughout the film, American History X, Derek feels victimized and threatened as a white American. He blames gangs, blacks, immigrants and even his mentor Cameron for all of America s problems. For instance, in one of the scenes in the film, both whites and blacks were playing basketball on the local basketball court. After an argument with one of the blacks, Derek decides whoever wins the game keeps the court and whoever loses leaves for good. If you win, we will walk outta here, but if we win, no bitching, no fighting, right here in front of everybody you pack up your shit and get your black asses outta here (American History X). The violent game came to an end and the black gang was kicked out. Instead of kicking each other off the court, they should have shared at least half. However, Derek felt the black people don t deserve to play on the same ground as the whites. Derek claims his fathers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The History of Training As stated earlier in the paper the course content has undergone several changes over the past 10 years. The beauty industry has continued to grow nationally through the economic downturn, with an 18 percent increase in the number of salons nationwide over the past three years. The cosmetology industry never dies down, even in a recession, says Michelle Woodard, admissions coordinator for Douglas J Aveda Institute in Grand Rapids. Everyone will always want to look beautiful. At the outset of this period there was little demand for specialised treatments. Therefore, the training requirements were geared up to obtain a standard set of skills for all graduates. Over the past 3 years, as treatments become more varied, the courses have had to adapt and offer more diverse qualifications. The awarding bodies have had to be aware that during this period of transition too many employers remain confused and bewildered by the skills infrastructure. (BBC News 13.11.08). This is due to the qualification constantly changing and salon owners not being made aware of these changes. This has been a factor the awarding bodies have had to consider when implementing any changes. Courses used to involve the student attending college 5 days a week. This has been changed for two reasons. The colleges have looked to reduce costs whilst maintaining the same level of attendees. Also, many students could not make ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Insanity Essay The distance between insanity and genius is measured only by success, as Bruce Feirstein would say. The insane are merely the ones who are not given their chance to change the world. They are, instead, locked away before society begins to take grip on the ravings of the mad man. Genius, on the other hand, is what is created when the insane are given their time to speak out. When Renfield began to address himself to the question he was confronted with, he did so with the utmost impartiality of the completest sanity. This leads the astute reader to wonder if renfield was, in fact, completely sane but driven to madness while being locked within the confines of an asylum. Even the sanest person may have insane tendencies when over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Renfield was speaking to the men on various subjects, he stated that, I am at least as sane as the majority of men who are in full possession of their liberties . Which shows that even the lunatic knows that he is just as the rest of the world, and that he could handle himself in the real world. Many lunatics could, in fact, be admitted into daily society. Dr. Seward does not know what it is like to be insane, so he has no way of knowing what makes the insane differ from the sane. Seward stated that he believes himself and the others insane and that he, expects them all to wake to sanity in strait waistcoats. To put it simply, only the insane take themselves seriously. That is the genius showing itself to the world. Seward stated that he was beginning wonder whether or not his habit of life amongst the insane is beginning to tell upon his own mind. If that be so, he is gaining a valuable asset in the fight against idiocy. Accepting insanity can create the balance needed to fully understand the world in a way considered opposite of the rest of society. When Van Helsing was breaking the ice on the existence of vampires, he mentioned that the teachings and records provide proof enough for sane peoples. It is as though he is saying that even people that are completely sane should be able to understand that vampires are, in fact, real. That creates an interesting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Twenty one coke in a week, that s too much! As a result of drinking too much coke makes me more obsessed and helps promote diabetes. My second bad health habit is lack of drinking water. Doctor Howard Flaks mentioned that for a healthy person the minimum of water they should consumed is eight to ten cups of water. It is sad to admit that I don t even drink three cups of water. With this nonsense of mine, I am just harming myself. The lack of water contributes to having more frequent headache, joint ache, and dryness of eyes. For my third bad health habit is that I spend too much time outside with direct sunlight and no sun cream nor protection. Is my passion being outside especially in the summer, I can spend hours and hours outside without even noticing it. The sad part is that I am allergic to direct run light; if I spend about an hour outside with direct run light I will start to get this type black spots in body. The market reward rationale for the patent system is based on the ability of patents to reduce transaction costs and serve as a transferable asset, thereby allowing for inventor to control the supply of the technology, and for the technology to maintain competitive pricing in the marketplace and recover costs of invention. Specifically, a patent allows for disclosure which prevents inventors from overlapping efforts or from keeping the technology a secret, thereby reducing transaction costs and making it easier to work with interested parties. The transferability of the patented technology further eases collaboration and commercialization efforts, allowing inventors work with appropriate companies who are well able to commercialize the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If a company creates a new drug to treat a certain disease, for example, they can get a patent for it and can charge supra competitive prices as they are the only market player, since the patent restricts other competitors from manufacturing the same medication. 3. The Ex post rationale focuses on the economic functions of patents after they are granted, claiming that the patent system incentivizes the technology to be constructively utilized, enhanced, and commercialized post patent. In particular, this rationale holds that patents improve economic efficiency (i.e. by reducing transaction costs, allowing for transferability divisibility, promoting collaboration), allowing for a more efficient marketplace, and promoting investments in the patented technology due to the chance of large rewards in the marketplace in return. For example, the University of Illinois develops a significant amount of patented technology, including the Dry Grind Corn Milling Process. The patent on this technology signifies to investors and other interested parties in the important functions of the technology in terms of processing corn into more corn products, and the fact that it was developed at a credited institution, initiating outside firms to invest in, enhance, and commercialize the product, improving the technologies competitive edge in the marketplace. • 10. National Security Is More Important Than Human Rights National Security is More Important than Human Rights The conception of human rights and freedoms is the cornerstone of American traditions, law and the indicator of democracy. The approach of prevailing interest in personal privacy, property privacy and non interference of state authorities in private affairs is the basic ground for modern organization of American society. For centuries the courts have been standing safeguards of protection of persons against unreasonable intrusion of the State, generally interpreting the Constitution and the Bill of Rights with preference of personal human rights protection. Nonetheless in the end of the 21st century there appeared several factors which so much influenced our society that the matters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In most of the cases opposing the concept of human rights to national security is erroneous and unreasonable construction because the national security is the concept which precludes the physical and mental security of all members of the society, and therefore includes and predetermines the possibility of exercising human rights and freedoms. Without security the well being is impossible. Looking at the national security vs. human rights question from the points of view of internal and external national security, one should first examine what concrete human rights may be waived or limited for the homeland security and protection purposes. Natural human rights like the right for life are not the subject to address in this essay. The rights addressed in this essay are defined primarily in the U.S. Bill of Rights. These are civil right for privacy, the right of peaceful protest, the right to personal freedom, the right to a fair trial and the right of equal protection, usually in the list of the rights which under certain conditions may be waived for the efficiency of homeland security and protection. The first argument supporting the statement that national security is more important than protection of individual rights is the increased threat of terroristic attacks, which are very dangerous, carefully planned, locally targeted and generously funded ... Elinor would not contend, and only replied, Whoever may have been so detestably your enemy, let them be cheated of their malignant triumph, my dear sister, by seeing how nobly the consciousness of your own innocence and good intentions supports your spirits. • 14. `` A Cyborg Manifesto `` By Manfred E. Clynes And Nathan... The cyborg figure is a common fixture in both science and science fiction. The term, coined by Manfred E. Clynes and Nathan S. Kline in 1960, refers to an organism with enhanced functionality due to the incorporation of a mechanical component (Clynes and Kline, 27). The animal machine hybrid was a figuration and embodiment of the modern era s lust for technology as a means of pushing the human towards what was often militaristic and capitalist ideals. However, in her groundbreaking essay A Cyborg Manifesto , Donna Haraway appropriates the patriarchal cyborg figure for feminist purposes, drawing on its composited ontology as a model for female liberation. Her essay posits a psychological escape from the dualisms that hamper the female sense of self, through its account of boundary breakdowns and its rejection of totalized identity. This psychological escape becomes active politically when applied to challenge the authority of the physical acts of oppression where these dualisms often manifest. However, the manifesto s inability to entirely account for cultural differentialism within feminism causes it to fall somewhat under Haraway s goal of promoting the particular female self. First published in 1985 as part of The Socialist Review and later updated in 1991 as part of her anthology of essays Simians, Cyborgs, and Women (the latter of which will be the version analyzed), Donna Haraway s A Cyborg Manifesto constructs a feminist call to action by situating a myth of the ... His employer Daniel Sweat owned a mill that had become infested with mice. This inspired him to begin working on an automatic mousetrap. He perfected the invention and in doing so got rid of the rodent problem that was plaguing his employer s mill. Many consider this to be his first notable invention, although he did seek out a patent for it. His other professions included an instrument maker and a mechanical draftsman. He worked for his uncle, Levi Stephens, at an engineering firm in Massachusetts. While in Boston he worked at a scientific instrument shop and later went on the work at a shipbuilding firm in New York. These various experiences gave him the skill to create more inventions. In 1866, at the age of 26, he received his first official patent for a curling iron. He also invented a coating for blackboards that was so successful that large numbers of his specially coated blackboards were sold throughout North American (Dartford Technology). These inventions were followed by a machine that would produce illumination gas and a locomotive head lamp. These inventions combine with wealth of experience at a seemingly early age got the attention of Spencer D. Schuyler, founder of the United States Electrical Lighting Company. Jones Middle School students are proficient/distinguished in reading and 26.3% are proficient/distinguished in math. As a middle school math and science teacher, I want to give my students tools that they can use to help them be successful in any subject area, in their current lives and in their futures. It is important that middle school teachers help students develop into independent thinkers that take responsibility for their own learning and achievement (Lines, 1994). One tool that can be beneficial to students as they progress through school and beyond is the use of self assessment. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of using student self assessment and progress monitoring strategies on student achievement in sixth grade. Student self assessment and progress monitoring is a process of formative assessment, during which students reflect on and evaluate the quality of their work and their learning, make judgments on whether they met the stated goals or learning criteria, identify strengths and weaknesses in their work, and revise accordingly (Spiller, 2012). Specific research questions that will be answered after this study concludes are as follows: 1. Massey, Brown, and Johnson (2005) suggested that active learning techniques provide opportunities for faculty to increase social presence, engage students, and positively enhance performance. Studies have shown that students tend to learn more when they actively participate in the learning process through discussing, practicing, reviewing, and applying knowledge to develop new meanings (Mcalpin, 2015). Maki and Maki (2007) found that online instruction required the application of strong methodology along with providing students with opportunities to interact with each other and the instructor. Aside from purposeful course design, active learning in an online course requires instructors to be actively involved in the learning process (Gayton McEwen, 2007; Young, 2006). This involvement includes, but is not limited to, minimal participation in discussion boards, course announcements, e mail, and other forms of web based communication (Dixon, 2010). However Dennen, Aubteen Darabi, and Smith (2007) warned that too much active participation by the instructor has been shown to result in decreased student participation. • 28. Casti Connubai On Christian Marriage 1. Christ dignified chaste wedlock before the coming of Christ by establishing it as a form of companionship between two people who will come together to have children. He designed this union to be the foundation of society. Christ further dignified wedlock by taking the Church as His bride. 2. In Casti Connubii on Christian Marriage, Pope Pius XI lists two things men must do to obtain the fruits of the sacrament of matrimony. The first is to be enlightened and fully understand Christ s true doctrine regarding matrimony itself. The second is to still remain pure in their thoughts and actions in order to obtain true peace and happiness for themselves and for their families . 3. a. The Pope sees a need to speak about the sanctity of marriage at this time because he saw that the people of his day were beginning to forget the importance of a holy marriage. It especially applies today with the leniency of how human intimacy is treated. Knowing this, the Pope spoke of it to remind people the importance of a Holy Christian marriage. b. We know the Pope is teaching infallibly here because he is re explaining a teaching already in practice. He doesn t add anything to the core of the teaching, which is to avoid temptation in the context of human intimacy, by shows specifically the temptations presented at that time in which the faithful should avoid. We can further confirm that the Pope speaks infallibly because all teachings of the Pope come from God, and there cannot be a fallible teaching from God Himself. 5. a. The point of Arcanum Divinae , as explained by Pope Pius XI, was to concentrate of matrimony as a divine institution and it s sacramental and perpetual stability. He used this Encyclical specifically as a reference and foundation for his own Encyclical. The only difference being that Arcanum Divinae speaks of the spiritual aspects of the sacrament while the Casti Connubii speaks of both the sacramental and the earthly systems and their effect on the lives of men. b. Theme Of Communication In The Movie Crash An Analysis of the Communication used in Crash by Paul Haggis The movie Crash shows the hostility between characters of different backgrounds, primarily through their interactions and dialect, to prove that everyone experiences discrimination and racism in their lives no matter their race, religion, sexual orientation, age, etc. Director Paul Haggis focuses on language, behavior, and stereotypes to convey the different kinds of communication used between the diverse races and ethnicity groups that are shown throughout the film. The textbook, Understanding Human Communication, defines human communication as the process of creating meaning through symbolic interactions, but this process is much more intricate than this definition makes it out to be (Adler, 5). Through my own analysis of the plot and various storylines, I will discuss the concepts and principles of communication used to portray the injustice of racial stereotyping and persecution in today s society. Three specific concepts of communication from Understanding Human Communication I recognized in the movie include the process of forming self perception and perceptions of others, stereotyping, and the power of language, more specifically connotative language. Michiko Kakutani, writer for the New York Times says it perfectly in his article about Huck Finn and censorship when he writes, To censor or redact books on school reading lists is a form of denial: shutting the door on harsh historical realities whitewashing them or pretending they do not exist (Kakutani). If we change Huck Finn not only are we breaking investment, but we re spitting on Twain s grave as he rolls over in it. Or as Spicer, somewhat more eloquently puts it, We read for a purpose, whether leisurely or intellectually, and authors write for a purpose. If we censor author s words, we censor their purpose, and their readers minds can never be opened for further exploration of the world. (Spicer). While some want to change the way Huck Finn is written in order to make it school friendly, it s worse than banning it, if it s banned it won t create an even more skewed perception of the time period. But with that said, banning it is also awful and completely undercuts Twain s work, and thinks that children in a high school setting need to be spoon fed their information since they can t think for themselves; like they can not think beyond the surface of a piece of writing. But even with all that people still think this book should be banned do the racism, the racism in a setting that was filled with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Character Analysis Of Hannibal Lecter What makes a villain a villain? Is it the senseless violence inflicted upon the innocent? Or is it the oh so tragic backstory that is dramatically revealed just when the audience was really starting to hate them? Or is it when they...you know...eat people? When is it too much? When does a villain become a villain? Is it not all just based on our society s views on what is right and what is wrong? After binging Hannibal, this is pretty much all I could think for several days. Hannibal makes the romance between Will and Hannibal very tasteful and realistic. Their feelings for the other grow slowly, there is not one point when you can definitively say that this is when their feelings begin. It is just an easy, natural progression of their relationship. I admit that the romantic undertones of Hannibal and Will s interactions were what initially led me to watch the show, but I ultimately fell for the masterful writing that Bryan Fuller, the creator, created with Mads Mikkelsen. The NBC revival of Hannibal shows Dr. Hannibal Lecter before Silence of the Lambs, before his imprisonment. It follows Will Graham, a gifted FBI profiler with the ability to see into the mind of anyone he chooses. This ability takes a great toll on Will s mental stability and because of this, he is forced to take on a psychiatrist, Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen). Hannibal s initial goal is to manipulate the FBI from within but he unexpectedly finds himself captivated by Will. Due to Will s instability, it is easy for Hannibal to push the bounds of Will s mind in order to make him realize his true, beautiful potential...as a killer ( Hannibal (TV series) ). The NBC reincarnation of Hannibal deliberately paints a very human monster. In an interview with a UK magazine, Digital Spy, Mikkelsen says about Hannibal, He s something else. The fraud scheme started to become undone when external auditors extended their investigation (Mangan, 2016). Investigators started questioning the activity of the agreements that were made and discovered that Retrophin had insufficient funds to cover the transactions that took place (Mangan, 2016). More red flags starting appearing causing a huge domino effect when Retrophin entered into four sham agreements and money were being paid out from more faulty agreements (Mangan, 2016). This case was unique because it had numerous funds being transferred between numerous accounts and for an extended period of time, demonstrating a pattern of classical securities and wire fraud. The fact that it involved vital medications price gouging to the public further made this investigation notorious (U.S. Attorney s office, 2015). It became crucial to study each transaction in order to connect the sources of the funds, as Shkreli was accused of medication price gouging, repeated losing investor s money and falsifying report, and then illegally taking funds from other companies to pay off investors (U.S. Attorney s office, 2015). In current times we often observe that many members of our society receive less than other members regardless of whether they are no less deserving. In contrast, there are some who have ownership over assets and earn income that they may not be deserving of. The distributive balance is upset and wealth distribution today can thus be seen as a social injustice. This injustice that is becoming more noticeable as people start to become aware of the facts, as we can see through the start of the occupy wall street movements that, first started on wall street in America, have spread to other countries (one of which being Australia). According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the wealthiest 20% account for 62% of total household net worth, with an average net worth of $2.2 million per household while the poorest 20% of households account for only 1% of total household net worth, with an average net worth of $31,829 per household. This can be at least partly attributed to a decrease in tax rate increments. The statistics draw on the selected income distribution indicators, which specify disposable household income (money that can be kept and spent for recreational purposes), show that those individuals in the high income bracket receive 40% of their total income while those in the low income bracket only receive 10%. Consequently, the net worth across households becomes even less matched as the rich not only have a considerably higher income, but are also able to save up much more. The discrepancies between the net worth in households are therefore exponentially larger than the discrepancies that exist in income, which reflects the previously mentioned pattern of people accumulating wealth through their working lives. The indignant attitudes posited by the movement can therefore be seen as justified. However, thought it may be justified, the movement seems to lack a focused goal they demand that some change is needed so that the situation regarding inequality can be rectified, but their demands fail to offer articulated strategy as to how this can be ...
