On comparison of clinical stages, majority of cases belonged to Stage II comprising of 10 (33.33%)
patients followed by Stage I in 9 (30.00%) patients, Stage III in 8 (26.67 %) patients and Stage IV

peripheral/ basal distribution pattern in the tumor islands in most of our cases. This was reported
in other studies (Monterio et al 2014) suggesting a more frequent distribution of this receptor in
tumor cells with a more proliferative phenotype. This expression pattern can be attributed to the
structure of EMMPRIN, as it has a cytoplasmic and membranous domain which was previously
described by Iacono et al. (2007).
On assessment of EMMPRIN expression in different age groups of OSCC, majority of patients
that is 12 (90%) below 60 years patients showed strong expression and only 9 (60%) patients
above 60 years showed strong expression. (p 0.2115) (Table.8). However, there was no statistically
significant difference between EMMPRIN expression and age groups.
Patient s age is commonly considered co variable and is known to influencethe outcone of the
treatment. Schantz et al. had stated that genetic susceptibility to environmental carcinogens may
influence the risk of OSCC in young adults. While the correlation of prognosis with age seemed
controvertial. It is generally held view thatOSCC in young people are less aggressive and have
good prognosis.
Similarly, studies by Monterio et al (2014) did not exhibit a statistically significant association of
EMMPRIN expression with age.
