Arctic Vampire Lizard Research Paper
Throughout the majority of the year, the Arctic vampire lizard is a parasite to the muskox (Ovibos
moschatus). Around the beginning of September, Arctic vampire lizards will climb up the legs of
muskoxen grazing on the last vegetation of the summer. Using its long toes to climb, the Arctic
vampire lizard will navigate through the fur of its muskox. Like some snakes, the vampire lizard has a
pit organ located beneath the nostrils with which the lizard can detect infrared radiation (Gracheva et
al. 2010). The Arctic vampire lizard uses the heat sensing organ to locate where blood vessels lie close
to the skin on the muskox. After locating a site, the Arctic vampire lizard will use its razor sharp teeth
to first shave the area of hair, then to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Immediately after entering the stomach, water and the unusable plasma of the ingested blood are
absorbed by the lining of the stomach (Breidenstein, 1982). The majority of the dry matter in blood is
mainly proteins, so the digestive system of the Arctic vampire lizard goes to work on breaking these
proteins down (Breidenstein, 1982). Beginning in the stomach, the enzyme pepcin begins breaking
some of the peptide bonds of the proteins (Silk et al. 1985). The contents of the stomach are then
quickly transported to the small intestine, where pancreatic enzymes continue to hydrolyze the
polypeptides, breaking them into individual amino acids (Silk et al. 1985). In the small intestine, the
amino acids are diffused through the intestinal lining into the tangent blood vessels to be delivered
through the body through the circulatory system (Silk et al. 1985). The liver can then convert amino
acids like alanine to glucose through a process called gluconeogenesis (Yoon et al. 2001). The glucose
is then made into ATP through aerobic respiration, producing water and carbon dioxide (Yoon et al.

Mafia Essay
The Mafia way of life may seem like a romantic updated version of the western movie played out on
the streets of the big cities where the good guys and the wise guys who share the same instincts and
values do battle before an enthralled public but it is actually very different. The Mafia is really just a
group of uneducated thugs making money by victimizing the public. Initially, the Mafia was setup as a
prominent supplier of bootlegged liquor, but it has spread into many different areas of crime. During
this research paper I will discuss three aspects of the Mafia which are crime, structure and decline in
leadership.
The Mob siphons off public funds, rigs contracts, corrupts unions which many hard working people

The codes can be shown by how one can be as frail as old Carlo Gambino the last real Godfather,
Boss of Bosses before he died in 1976, but if by a simple yes or no, a nod or shake of the head, or a
waggle of a finger one has the power of death over anyone in his organizatoin. The Mafia is made up
of thieves, and murderers who are all greedy for money. On the flip side, the Mafia is based on
respect. Each member must respect and follow all orders give by a higher ranking member. Although
the make up of the Mob is based on respect, members usually kill their way to the top. A Mafia family
is headed by a boss who is in charge of everything, he is the one who controls all of the power because
in the Mafia the rule of law is the rule of the despot. Each family has an underboss who mediates
disputes and advises the boss, as well as a number of captains. Under each captain are soldiers, the
lowest official Mafia member. The Italian Mafia is not the only organized crime group around, there
are many other ethnic groups the Mafia has to coexist with. Not only is the mob facing new
competition from Chinese gangs and Russian immigrants, but it must also contend with the hungrier
drug syndicates from Latin America and the Caribbean, whose staggering wealth and firepower make
the mob look quaint. Although

Computer in Todays World
The Place of Computer in Today s World
Introduction:
Today, we are living in a computer age. The awareness of computer is more than at any other time. It
has dominated almost all the fields. There is hardly an industry, which does not use computers. It is
not anymore thought of as a mere calculating machine. Computers are used in banks, factories, in
Government offices, education institutions, for research and development and even supermarkets. The
Computer plays a very vital role in the following fields: Trade and Commerce: In business,
transactions that take place have to be very carefully recorded so that there is less ambiguity and the

Road transport has taken the cue from Railways and adopted it successfully. Even air traffic control is
through the use of Computers. They have helped in minimizing accidents to a great extent. Vehicles
can now be tracked by using a technology called GPS (Global Positioning System). Process Industry:
Computers are playing the role of Quality Controllers in manufacturing concerns. A program called
CMC is utilized where the machines are programmed to produce units of same quality thereby
reducing defective components. Engineers make use of CAD/CAM to design products or design the
plant layouts. Home and Hobby: Personal computers are an exciting hobby. Many people prefer to
build their own computers from kits or modify systems that they have purchased. Home computer is
much sought after for relaxation. There are many games that use the full capabilities of a computer to
provide many hours of challenging and exciting leisure time adventure. The list of other home and
hobby applications of personal computer includes checking, account management, budgeting, personal
finance, planning, nutrition analysis and dieting, personal income tax preparation, investment analysis,
telephone answering and dialing, home security, home environment and climate control, calendar
management and maintenance of address and mailing lists. Word Processing: A word processing

American Schools
American Schools in Crisis American schools have a big problem on their hands and that would be
keeping kids in the classroom. Year after year students are failing to graduate and deciding to drop out
of school. The reasons for this are far and in between, but actions need to be taken so that this no
longer happens. Staying in school is the only way to success unless you are extremely lucky. Higher
levels of education can only help you in your future. As little fun as school is students need to fight
their way through because there is a light at the end of the tunnel. That shining light is a bright future
with success in anything you want. The dropout rates over the years have seen little or no movement
in numbers. Students are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though these are harder situations there can still be action taken. Such action could be
implementing learning programs in these schools. For example, in these schools they can have special
programs for underachieving students. They can have classes dedicated to just students that have
difficulty learning. In these classes they would have teachers that work at a slower pace so that they all
can understand. They can also have AP classes to help students earn some credits for college. Also
another big problem in these types of schools is attendance. Many kids would much rather stay home
or on the streets getting into trouble. But if they reward these students for attending class much more
of them would decide to come to, school. Even if they are only getting a few points here and there,
they would show up. The goal of teachers should be to help students pass and want to come to school
not just barely squeeze. Making changes in these lower level high schools will help the improvement
of these very poor graduation rates. Another thing to help students graduate is to balance out the
schools systems. These days there are high schools that only accept well educated students. There is
no problem in this; however they should not accept students so easily. If all the smart students attend
these private schools then all of the less smart kids will be forced to attend worse institutions. Granted,
not all smart students can afford to attend these private

The Counseling Relationship Analysis
List and describe the stages of the counseling relationship as presented by the author of the textbook.
The Counseling Relationship consist of six stages: Rapport and Trust Building, Problem
Identification, Deepening Understanding and Goal Setting, Work, Closure, and Post Interview. During
Stage 1, Rapport and Trust Building, the counselor works on developing a comfortable and trusting
relationship with the use of good social skills, listening skills, empathy, and culture sensitivity.
Without loosing focus of the main purpose of the session (assisting the client with their self identified
problem), both the client and counselor will find common interest in an effort to build their
relationship with one another. The counselor mentally identifies issues the clients bring up, all while
eventfully reviewing with the client the accuracy of that list. The counselor will want to ensure a safe
environment and the client is informed of their basic framework and concerns of the relationship.
Professional disclosures are often provided during this stage. These are considered legal documents
for both the client and counselor to sign. During Stage 2 Problem Identification occurs. The client and

the client has gained enough insight and skills to deal with further recurring symptoms, 4) there is a
resolution of transference issues, 5) the client has the ability to work effectively, enjoy life, and play,
and 6) continued services are not likely to be helpful. Clients and Counselors both may resist

Private Troubles And Public Issues That People Face In...
When talking about the troubles that people face and the issues that society faces, it is important to
understand that they both go hand in hand. The private troubles that one faces make contribute to the
public issues that the society faces, and vice versa. Growing up there were a few significant events
that would be considered my private troubles yet public issues contuted to making the troubles.
Growing up I was a fine example of mills theory Neither the life of an individual nor the history of a
society can be understood without understanding both (Mills 3). One clear example of a trouble that I
have face in my life is the suicide of my papa. He was dealing with his personal troubles to keep our
family afloat, finish his education, struggling with internal self esteem, and PTSD from the military.
His PTSD would show up in the way that he would treat my mom and me. I would consider this a
personal trouble because it what he felt internally and what my mom and went through during his
death. My family went through many rough times with keeping food on the tables and my papa s
PTSD affecting our everyday life. Finally, one day it seemed as if hiss PTSD took the very last thing,
him. He faced many troubles as a child but it wasn t until he joined the military and got deployed that
the troubles stared to hit home. Because he was struggling with providing for the family he felt less
than, affecting his self esteem. He had his personal triubles and he may have felt that he

The Abolition Of Torture By Andrew Sullivan
The Abolition of Torture In this article, Andrew Sullivan, is an advocate for the abolition of torture
against terrorist in the United States. During the time that this article was written, the McCain
Amendment (which banned torture) was on a political limbo. What this author talks mostly about is
the choice that we have to make things right, therefore ban the use of torture against terrorist. This
debate takes place after Bush administration defined torture and permitted coercive, physical abuse of
enemy combatants if military necessity demands it. Also after several reports found severe abuse of
detainees in Afghanistan and elsewhere that has led to at least two dozen deaths during interrogation,
secret torture sites in Eastern Europe and innocent detainees being murdered. Sullivan, argument is
opposite to that of Krauthammer s argument because for him torture, in any form and under any
circumstances, represents the opposite to what the US stands for and it is an impediment to winning a
wider war. Torture is the polar opposite of freedom. It is the banishment of all freedom from a human
body and soul. Human beings, all inhabit bodies and have minds, souls, and reflexes that are designed
in part to protect those bodies and to maintain a sense of selfhood that is the basis for the concept of
personal liberty. What torture does is use these involuntary, self protective resources of human beings
against the integrity of the human being himself. It takes what is most

Dorothea Lynde Dix And The Inhumane And Dark Experiences
People like to assume when they are happy others must automatically be happy as well. And a lot of
the time, it is because we are not being exposed to the inhumane and dark experiences that some
persons face behind closed doors. Now more than ever, are people like social workers fighting to
make sure we stand up and advocate for anyone in need. Especially making sure that persons who can
t advocate for themselves get the treatment they truly deserve. Through the altruistic efforts of
Dorothea Lynde Dix, she advocated for the mentally ill and for prisoners around the United States,
Canada and Europe.

eventually had established another school for girls and especially for those who could not afford to get

Pornography, Protection, And Privacy
In 2015 Jiz Lee, pornographic performer, activist, and triathlete, published Coming Out Like a Porn
Star: Essays on Pornography, Protection, and Privacy. Their work is a unique collection of personal
essays written by more than fifty current and former adult professionals, including performers,
directors, website founders, and CEOs. Raw, honest, and occasionally hilarious, the book provides
critical insight into the difficulties of maintaining privacy, facing stigma, and finding support. Coming
Out Like a Porn Star (COLAPS) serves as a contribution to the destigmatization of pornography, the
recognition of the legitimacy of pornographic careers, and the appreciation of sexual performance as
labor.

The internet has made birth names more searchable and created a permanence of visibility, not just for
porn performers who have started recently, but also for ones who had, for a time, faded into obscurity
on dissolving reels of VHS tape. (Habib, C., The Name of Your First Pet and The Street You Grew Up
On in COLAPS, pg. 105)
In other cases, individuals chose to use their legal names, feeling that it was impossible to maintain
impermeable privacy. Some have even adopted their porn names for such reasons as identification
among fans and supporters or as a method of disowning shame associated with their identity as queer,
a porn performer, or otherwise (e.g. Habib, C., pg. 103 106; Halili Orbacedo, M., pg. 246 249;
Lowrance, C., pg. 75 76). These individuals, who chose to use their legal names, largely
acknowledged that their ability to do so was a privilege, that not many in the industry are afforded. As
a collective, these essays emphasize privacy as a primary method of protection. Many writers,
including Anonymous (pg. 38 40), Cyd Nova (pg. 118 122), and Kitty Stryker (pg. 216 219), convey
that, were it not for the misconceptions and negative connotations surrounding their work, there would
not be such a great need for methods of maintaining desperately needed privacy.
In the context of COLAPS, three themes related to stigma recur throughout the book. The first has

African American Literature 1940 Present
@02709326
As portrayed in both novels, how is Lutie Johnson s murder of Boots Smith and Bigger Thomas s
murder of Mary Dalton a direct representation of oppression and it s impact on the American Dream
for the African American?
Ann Petry s novel The Street (1946) is a commentary on the social injustices that confronted the
protagonist Lutie Johnson. Lutie is a single African American mother who lives in segregated America
during the 1940 s. Throughout the novel, we see that during this time period Lutie is confronted by
racism, sexism, and classism on a daily basis while in her pursuit of the American Dream for herself
and her son Bub. Lutie is convinced that if she follows the example of Benjamin Franklin, by working
hard and saving wisely, she will be able to achieve the dream of being financially independent and
therefore be able to move out from the Street in which she is confined to. Benjamin Franklin is
embodied in the text through the character Junto. It is Junto that is supposed to get Lutie closer
towards her dream. However, Junto, through his secret manipulations tries to possess Lutie sexually,
ultimately leading Lutie towards her path of destruction and she ends up committing the murder of
Junto s henchman, Boots. Junto represents the writer Petry s deep disillusionment with this cultural
myth of the so called American dream. In Richard Wright s novel Native Son (1940), The protagonist
Bigger Thomas, is

Studies in Brazil Resulted in Janice Perlman s Book, The...
For once complete year (1968 1969), Janice Perlman lived in the favelas (informal housing
settlements of Rio de Janeiro in the beautiful country of Brazil. Her studies conducted research which
resulted in the book The Myth of Marginality: Urban Poverty and Politics in Rio de Janeiro, published
in 1976. The book extensively disagreed with the negative perspectives of the urban poor that were
prevalent at the time. Her first book criticized the attitude accepted by the people against the urban
poor for their alleged disability to integrate themselves into the city s job market. Moreover, a key
argument was to identify the irony and absurdity behind blaming the victims for their own poverty. In
1999, thirty years later, Perlman decided to revisit Rio de Janeiro and began a new study with the
previously used locations: the favela of Catacumba, which was destroyed in 1970, forcing its residents
to relocated to multiple low income apartment complexes known as conjuntos; Nova Brasilia, which
became part of the infamous Complexo do Alemao (a complex of many favelas); and lastly the
municipality of Duque de Caxias which is located in region known as the Lowlands of the State of Rio
(Baixada Fluminense). This newly acquired research served in the production of Favela: Four Decades
of Living on the Edge in Rio de Janeiro. This book tells the stories of people that Perlman interviewed

The Melian Dialogue, Written By Thucydides
The Melian Dialogue , written by Thucydides, is a classic argument mainly over power and realism
taken place under international politics. In this dialogue, consisting of the Athenians and the Melians,
the Athenians arrive on the island where the Melians had resided in attempt to conquer it. At this time,
the Athenians are at war with the Spartans and see that the island can only benefit them in the war.
Now, the Melians are kinsman of the Spartans, but they are a neutral state. The Athenians, however,
cannot accept the Melian s neutrality and offer them a kind ultimatum: pay tribute to state of Athens or
be destroyed. Later, the Athenians congregate with Melian representatives in order to reason with
them so they can accept their ultimatum. The Melians try to convince the Athenians one ... Show more

possibilities rather than deliberately involving themselves in a war that they cannot fight. Yet the
Melians still believe that there is hope, and that the outcome of a war is not predictable nor
guaranteed. They also explain to the Athenians that if they attack their country, many awful
repercussions would ensue. As the Melians go on to list these repercussions, the Athenians oppose
each of their premises with their own reasoning. Ultimately, the Melian representatives conclude that
they would not surrender to the Athenians. Moreover, the Melian decision meant that they would
indeed go to war with the Athenians. As expected, the Melians were outnumbered and overpowered,
which forced them to do nothing but surrender to Athenians. Unfortunately, the Athenians put to death

Essay about Scarlet letter chapter 5
Chapter Five: Hester at Her Needle
Summary
Hester is released from prison and finds a cottage in the woods, near the outskirts of the city, to set up
her new life. Hawthorne comments on the fact that she does not avail herself of the opportunity to
escape to a new life without shame in some other city. He remarks that often people are irresistibly
drawn to live near the place where a great has occurred. He further comments that even if that is not
the reason, Hester may have been inclined to remain in Boston because her secret lover still lived
there.
Hester s skill at needlework, earlier shown in the fine way that she displayed the scarlet letter, allows
her to maintain a fairly stable lifestyle. However, her reputation as an outcast ... Show more content on

Whereas at first it represented Hester s adultery and also her needlework skills, it now takes on two
more meanings. Foremost, the letter begins to represent the hidden shame of the community. Thus
preachers will stop in the street and give sermons when they see Hester. The letter therefore becomes
an example of crime and acts a deterrent for others in the community.
However, Hawthorne indicates that Hester is now able to see when other people sympathize with her.
Thus the letter serves as a gateway into other people s secret crimes, and acts as a focal point for the
shame of the entire community.. The letter can thus also be interpreted as a symbol of shame shared by
everyone, rather than by Hester alone.
The treatment of Hester almost reaches a low point in this chapter. She is cut off socially in the sense
that she has no friends and lives in an isolated cottage. In addition, Hester becomes an outcast which
even the children mock, causing her more pain. Hawthorne indicates that even though Hester spends
time helping to make clothes for the poor, they treat her badly in spite of her good intentions.
Her choice of habitation is crucial to the symbolism within the novel. The forest represents love, or the
wilderness where the strict morals of the Puritan community cannot apply. Thus, when Hester makes
her home on the outskirts of the city, directly on the edge of the woods, she is putting herself in a place
of limbo between the moral and the immoral universes.

The Impact Of Deforestation And Its Environmental Impact
Deforestation and its environmental impact
Deforestation is the action of clearing a wide area of trees. Twenty percent of the world s rainforest
has been destroyed because of deforestation. Forests cover about 30% of the planet. Deforestation is
clearing forests on a massive scale. National geographic stated that The world s rainforest could
completely vanish in a hundred years at the current rate of deforestation. (NG 2015)
The cause of deforestation is from number of things. Some are unintentional and some are intentions
clearings. The number one cause of deforestation is agriculture. Farmers buy forested lands to clear
and replant crops for harvest. Farmers also buy land for grazing animals. Cattle ranching is the leading
cause of deforestation in the Amazon. Many times deforestation is caused from illegal farming and
cutting. 49% of all deforestation is illegal (FT 2015) Another leading cause for deforestation is
logging. Logging other wise known as foresting. Other causes are wildfires caused unintentionally by
people and subsequent overgrazing.
Deforestation causes many large problems for the environment and society. The largest issue is the
destruction of habitats. The loss of habitat affects millions of species. Eighty percent of Earth s land
animals and plants live in forests. Deforestation is beginning to kill off species because many species
cannot survive the deforestation that destroys their homes. Deforesting ruins biodiversity and alters

Alvarez
Alvarez: A Case Study I. Executive Summary Alvarez, a mechanic in Canalven, has been with the
company for 25 years and is five years away from retirement. He is good at his tasks and has a good
understanding of the machineries, displayed by his ability to develop high quality machines for the
plant use. He is very energetic and very proud of his job and his capabilities, so proud that he inscribes
his name in bright yellow to every machine that he developed and assembled. This caught the
attention of Stone, a young but experienced engineer who was new to the company and was assigned
to supervise the skilled workers, including Alvarez. Alvarez did not believe in the leadership and
abilities of Stone, who made mistakes and delays in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To address this, Pinto should come up with a collaborative solution if he wants to lead the changes
needed by Canalven to be more productive and competitive. * Alvarez, having been worked for
Canalven the longest, is in the point where he wants to reaffirm his value and self worth: * Create an
award of lifetime service for Alvarez to recognize his 25 years of dedication and excellent work. *
Organize an ongoing employee of the month award to encourage same behavior with other workers
and to provide equal opportunity for everyone to be recognized for his good work. * Enroll Alvarez to
trainings that will further improve his abilities * Alvarez, like any other individual, feels the need to
feel a sense of belonging and acceptance from his superior and co workers alike. * An arrangement in
which Alvarez, Stone, and other key machine personnel are required to have a joint meeting before
any major build or repair. * As the plant manager, Pinto will be responsible for gathering the workers
once in a while to let them in about the plans lined up for the plant. This will give them a sense of
respect, and belonging and feel that their work is important if the plans of the company are to succeed.
* Implement a buddy system where incoming engineers will be partnered with seasoned workers with
extensive practical know how, to facilitate the knowledge sharing in the

Clemens And Greed
Everyone encounters a hardship in their life at some point. It is whether or not you attempt to
overcome it, determines your success. One of my favorite quotes from Mark Twain Worrying is like
paying a debt you don t owe, 1 is stating that we worry over simplistic things, while we shouldn t
concern ourselves over it at all. I strongly agree with this quotation by one of the most renowned
American writers in modern history because I would like to believe it justifies my first statement.
Worrying about an obstacle in front of you may alter your view of it or generally deter you from
attempting to overcome it.
At a young age, Samuel Langhorne Clemens, four years old at the time, and his family moved from
Florida, Missouri to Hannibal, Missouri. Only about a forty mile distance, which at this time was a
drastic change for this family. Now living on the banks of the Missouri river, in such an interesting
town, Clemens was inspired. Hannibal inspired many of the towns of his stories such as St. Petersburg
on the banks of the Mississippi. These imaginary river towns are complex places: sunlit and exuberant

His most recent descendant was Nina Clemens Gabrilowitsch, Clemens great granddaughter of
daughter Clara Clemens. Within the past decade, this was the end of the line of direct descendants,
until Susan Bailey stepped forward. Bailey is believed to have been the only daughter of Nina,
continuing the family line. This is only from childhood memories of Bailey and has yet to be proven
by DNA testing of a closer family member of Clemens.
In conclusion, Samuel Clemens has a broad history, consequently few people alive know everything
about him. He has travelled the country spreading knowledge, and trying to make a living. He is a man
of mystery, leaving us to question things today. The man has accomplished so much, how would just
one person know everything about

Rhetorical Analysis – Other Voices, Other Rooms
In this essay, Other Voices, Other Rooms , Professor Gerald Graff offers that education at a university
could be exciting and rewarding for students. However, it applies to those who have developed the
skills at summarizing, weighing arguments and synthesizing conflicting points. Unfortunately, not all
students possess these skills and as they start getting confused they will care more about appeasing the
professor in order to obtain good grades. In return, they will give their professors whatever they want
even though it seems contradictory to their beliefs (339). Graff believes that not all college students
possess the skills necessary to be successful and that professors are only making the issue worse by
teaching in a vacuum. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Graff says that contrast is fundamental to learning and in order to fully grasp the concept, and the
subject needs to be understood in relation to other ideas. In his second example, in attempting to
strengthen his argument, Graff uses an academic reference, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by
Thomas S. Kuhn. Kuhn says,
Both the literati and the scientist have remained largely walled up within their clashing assumptions
about objectivity, the smugness of which might have been punctured had these parties been forced to
argue with each other in their teaching (341). Even though Graff and Kuhn share the same thoughts,
Kuhn s reference does not provide any evidence to support his claims. He then introduces Gregory
Colomb, which his reference again doesn t add credibility; it detracts from the essay because readers
have to read the text several times just to get through this part of the writing. Graff says, Imagine
trying to write and academic paper when you send that almost anything you say can be used against
you and that the intellectual moves that got you an A in existentialist philosophy may get you a C
minus and a dirty look in Skinnerian behaviorism (342) . He goes on to say, When students fail to

The Effects Of Social Media On Mental Health
In a growing world where technology has become an essential source of communication, special
attention must be placed on the potential hazards of social media. The relationship between an

My Teaching Style Uses The Facilitator Method Of Teaching
As an early childhood professional, I take pride in educating and caring for young children. My
preferred teaching style includes taking on a hands on, active approach to teaching and learning. Every
day brings new opportunities for me to learn with and about young learners and their families. My
teaching style is impacted by information gained from young children s home life and communities.
My students are engaged and motivated to learn in a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment that
enables them to freely explore their environments. My teaching style uses the facilitator method of
teaching. My students are encouraged to use their critical thinking skills, dig deeper, and use previous
understanding to make connections to new knowledge. Gill (2013) notes this style trains students to
ask questions through exploration; it is ideal for teaching science and similar subjects (education cu
portland.edu). As an educator, I intentionally plan and implement strategies to get to know my
students and their families. When new students enter my classroom I ask open ended questions and
have parents fill out surveys that enable me get to know all learners and their families on a deeper
level.
My previous experiences working with young children and their families enables me to be a
successful leader as I strive to accomplish my ultimate goal of being the founder of an early childhood
education and care program. Working at a military child development center and a women and

A Response On Nozick s Conception Of Knowledge
Emmaline DiPace
Professor Theodore Korzukhin
PHIL 10100
October 29, 2016
A Response to Nozick s Conception of Knowledge In everyday life, people often claim knowledge of
various facts and experiences. However, despite the regularity of such claims, it is difficult to
articulate what knowledge specifically is and what conditions are necessary to constitute knowledge of
a specific fact or event. One set of conditions for knowledge, known as justified true belief, states that
a person knows something if that thing is true, if they believe it, and if they are justified in believing it
(Gettier 345). This theory, however, was shown to be problematic by the philosopher Edmund Gettier.
By proposing two examples, Gettier showed that the conditions of justified true belief are not
sufficient to establish knowledge (345 346). Although Gettier found this flaw, he did not propose any
alternate conditions of knowledge to add to or replace those of justified true belief (346). This is where
Nozick s idea of knowledge, presented in Knowledge from Philosophical Explanations, becomes
relevant. Nozick s conditions for knowledge attempt to define knowledge without being swayed by
cases such as the Gettier examples. In this paper, I will first summarize Nozick s conception of
knowledge as well as some of the reasoning for including each condition. I will then try to find an
example to show that Nozick s conditions, although more widely applicable to knowledge than
justified true

Max Enthusiasm Research Paper
The first big experimental or avant garde film of the 1930s was L Age d Or, or The Golden Age,
released in 1930. It was directed by Luis Buñuel and written by him and one of the most famous
painters of all time, surrealist Salvador Dalí. However, the two were not getting along by the time
production began and Buñuel supposedly ran Dalí off the set while brandishing a hammer.
They were fresh off making a landmark in avant garde cinema, the shocking Un Chien Andalou. That
was a short film, but L Age d Or was closer to feature length at 63 minutes. Like Un Chien Andalou,
there is no clear plot and events that take place appear to be random. Surrealism is an obvious
influence and well known Surrealist artist Max Ernst appears as an actor.
Buñuel was Spanish, but this was made in France and in the French ... Show more content on

Just two years prior, he made A Man with a Movie Camera, one of the most important experimental
films of the 20th century. It had no story, but it did have highly innovative cinematography and
pioneered several filmmaking and editing techniques.
Enthusiasm was about Soviet miners in Eastern Ukraine and didn t have nearly the same impact as A
Man with a Movie Camera, but it was similar in that didn t have any actors or straightforward
narrative. There are some neat shots using double exposure and the film running backward, as well as
editing that s at times much faster than what was common at the time. It was also the first sound film
from Vertov.
Enthusiam is interesting, but it wasn t as historically significant or groundbreaking as others in this
era. I wouldn t recommend checking it out until you see most or all of the rest of this list.

A Woman Who Was A Girl
Once upon a time there was a woman who was unexpectedly pregnant. She had big brown eyes, short
hair, and her physique was slim since she lived in the gym and practiced for volleyball. Even though
the little seed in the woman s stomach was not planned, her parents were overly excited for another
child. They already had two of their own to take care of but were ready for another challenge. A
couple months into the pregnancy, they were shocked to know the child was a girl. They had two boys
before that and thought they would have another one. Her parents did not know what to name their
first daughter, but her mother thought of Alinali, which many could not pronounce one bit. On the
other hand, her father thought of something simple, like Nicole.
Every day after she was born, her parents cherished her and their other two sons. They showed
unconditional love on a daily basis and always gave an abundant number of hugs and kisses. Three
years went by when Nicole and her siblings had one more addition to the family. Sadly, things began
to change. Her parents had struggled financially and were extremely stressed. Looking for ways to
help the family, both parents worked assiduously to bring money to the table, and that is why her
mother applied for a side job at a hotel. Injuring her back at her first job, which had dealt with cars,
her mother could not work no longer, so all the responsibility was left on the father. They managed
and were still very thankful, but the mother s

Analysis Of Rosie The Riveter
Rosie the Riveter Rosie the Riveter was a female icon created in a time of global war during the
1940s; she symbolized women who built ships and planes, and produced munitions (Ellis 478). She
was created to be a reminder to everyone to try new things, test limits, and believe in each other.
(Mather Thrift). She also represents any woman defense worker (Harvey). The women influenced by
her became ambulance drivers, delivered airplanes, and decoded messages (Ellis 478). Norman
Rockwell is the artist while Howard Millar was the one who created her (Harvey). We can do it! is
Rosie s famous saying, it was created to get people to do more work by the federal government
(Harvey). Rosie influenced many women during the war time. She caused women to want to join
military in the war. Women Propaganda Propaganda was a big deal for women during World War Two
because it influenced them to join the war and work out of the house. Until World War Two women
were thought to only be helpful in the house however once they were desperate during the war, they
found out women were able to do the same jobs as men (Mathis). Propaganda was shown in magazine
articles, advertisements, radio programs, and posters of women working; it changed the view of the
public on how women should be working (Mathis). A famous saying The More Women at Work The
Sooner We ll Win was on posters to show the benefit of women being able to help contribute to the
war (Mathis). An example from D Day

Around the beginning of September, Arctic vampire lizards will climb up the legs of muskoxen grazing on the last vegetation of the summer. The majority of the dry matter in blood is mainly proteins, so the digestive system of the Arctic vampire lizard goes to work on breaking these proteins down (Breidenstein, 1982). Beginning in the stomach, the enzyme pepcin begins breaking some of the peptide bonds of the proteins (Silk et al. 1985). The contents of the stomach are then quickly transported to the small intestine, where pancreatic enzymes continue to hydrolyze the polypeptides, breaking them into individual amino acids (Silk et al. 1985). In the small intestine, the amino acids are diffused through the intestinal lining into the tangent blood vessels to be delivered through the body through the circulatory system (Silk et al. 1985). The liver can then convert amino acids like alanine to glucose through a process called gluconeogenesis (Yoon et al. 2001). Mafia Essay The Mafia way of life may seem like a romantic updated version of the western movie played out on the streets of the big cities where the good guys and the wise guys who share the same instincts and values do battle before an enthralled public but it is actually very different. The Mafia is really just a group of uneducated thugs making money by victimizing the public. Initially, the Mafia was setup as a prominent supplier of bootlegged liquor, but it has spread into many different areas of crime. For example, in these schools they can have special programs for underachieving students. They can have classes dedicated to just students that have difficulty learning. In these classes they would have teachers that work at a slower pace so that they all can understand. They can also have AP classes to help students earn some credits for college. Also another big problem in these types of schools is attendance. Many kids would much rather stay home or on the streets getting into trouble. But if they reward these students for attending class much more of them would decide to come to, school. Even if they are only getting a few points here and there, they would show up. The goal of teachers should be to help students pass and want to come to school not just barely squeeze. Making changes in these lower level high schools will help the improvement of these very poor graduation rates. Another thing to help students graduate is to balance out the schools systems. These days there are high schools that only accept well educated students. There is no problem in this; however they should not accept students so easily. • 8. The Abolition Of Torture By Andrew Sullivan The Abolition of Torture In this article, Andrew Sullivan, is an advocate for the abolition of torture against terrorist in the United States. During the time that this article was written, the McCain Amendment (which banned torture) was on a political limbo. What this author talks mostly about is the choice that we have to make things right, therefore ban the use of torture against terrorist. This debate takes place after Bush administration defined torture and permitted coercive, physical abuse of enemy combatants if military necessity demands it. Also after several reports found severe abuse of detainees in Afghanistan and elsewhere that has led to at least two dozen deaths during interrogation, secret torture sites in Eastern Europe and innocent detainees being murdered. Sullivan, argument is opposite to that of Krauthammer s argument because for him torture, in any form and under any circumstances, represents the opposite to what the US stands for and it is an impediment to winning a wider war. Torture is the polar opposite of freedom. It is the banishment of all freedom from a human body and soul. Human beings, all inhabit bodies and have minds, souls, and reflexes that are designed in part to protect those bodies and to maintain a sense of selfhood that is the basis for the concept of personal liberty. Ann Petry s novel The Street (1946) is a commentary on the social injustices that confronted the protagonist Lutie Johnson. For once complete year (1968 1969), Janice Perlman lived in the favelas (informal housing settlements of Rio de Janeiro in the beautiful country of Brazil. Her studies conducted research which resulted in the book The Myth of Marginality: Urban Poverty and Politics in Rio de Janeiro, published in 1976. The book extensively disagreed with the negative perspectives of the urban poor that were prevalent at the time. Her first book criticized the attitude accepted by the people against the urban poor for their alleged disability to integrate themselves into the city s job market. Moreover, a key argument was to identify the irony and absurdity behind blaming the victims for their own poverty. In 1999, thirty years later, Perlman decided to revisit Rio de Janeiro and began a new study with the previously used locations: the favela of Catacumba, which was destroyed in 1970, forcing its residents to relocated to multiple low income apartment complexes known as conjuntos; Nova Brasilia, which became part of the infamous Complexo do Alemao (a complex of many favelas); and lastly the municipality of Duque de Caxias which is located in region known as the Lowlands of the State of Rio (Baixada Fluminense). Hawthorne comments on the fact that she does not avail herself of the opportunity to escape to a new life without shame in some other city. He remarks that often people are irresistibly drawn to live near the place where a great has occurred. He further comments that even if that is not the reason, Hester may have been inclined to remain in Boston because her secret lover still lived there. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Whereas at first it represented Hester s adultery and also her needlework skills, it now takes on two more meanings. Foremost, the letter begins to represent the hidden shame of the community. Thus preachers will stop in the street and give sermons when they see Hester. The letter therefore becomes an example of crime and acts a deterrent for others in the community. However, Hawthorne indicates that Hester is now able to see when other people sympathize with her. Thus the letter serves as a gateway into other people s secret crimes, and acts as a focal point for the shame of the entire community.. The letter can thus also be interpreted as a symbol of shame shared by everyone, rather than by Hester alone. The treatment of Hester almost reaches a low point in this chapter. She is cut off socially in the sense that she has no friends and lives in an isolated cottage. In addition, Hester becomes an outcast which even the children mock, causing her more pain. Hawthorne indicates that even though Hester spends time helping to make clothes for the poor, they treat her badly in spite of her good intentions. Her choice of habitation is crucial to the symbolism within the novel. The forest represents love, or the wilderness where the strict morals of the Puritan community cannot apply. Thus, when Hester makes her home on the outskirts of the city, directly on the edge of the woods, she is putting herself in a place of limbo between the moral and the immoral universes. ... • 22. Clemens And Greed Everyone encounters a hardship in their life at some point. It is whether or not you attempt to overcome it, determines your success. One of my favorite quotes from Mark Twain Worrying is like paying a debt you don t owe, 1 is stating that we worry over simplistic things, while we shouldn t concern ourselves over it at all. I strongly agree with this quotation by one of the most renowned American writers in modern history because I would like to believe it justifies my first statement. Worrying about an obstacle in front of you may alter your view of it or generally deter you from attempting to overcome it. At a young age, Samuel Langhorne Clemens, four years old at the time, and his family moved from Florida, Missouri to Hannibal, Missouri. Only about a forty mile distance, which at this time was a drastic change for this family. Now living on the banks of the Missouri river, in such an interesting town, Clemens was inspired. Hannibal inspired many of the towns of his stories such as St. Petersburg on the banks of the Mississippi. These imaginary river towns are complex places: sunlit and exuberant on the one ... Within the past decade, this was the end of the line of direct descendants, until Susan Bailey stepped forward. Bailey is believed to have been the only daughter of Nina, continuing the family line. This is only from childhood memories of Bailey and has yet to be proven by DNA testing of a closer family member of Clemens. In conclusion, Samuel Clemens has a broad history, consequently few people alive know everything about him. He has travelled the country spreading knowledge, and trying to make a living. • 23. Rhetorical Analysis – Other Voices, Other Rooms In this essay, Other Voices, Other Rooms , Professor Gerald Graff offers that education at a university could be exciting and rewarding for students. However, it applies to those who have developed the skills at summarizing, weighing arguments and synthesizing conflicting points. Unfortunately, not all students possess these skills and as they start getting confused they will care more about appeasing the professor in order to obtain good grades. In return, they will give their professors whatever they want even though it seems contradictory to their beliefs (339). Graff believes that not all college students possess the skills necessary to be successful and that professors are only making the issue worse by teaching in a vacuum. ... Graff says that contrast is fundamental to learning and in order to fully grasp the concept, and the subject needs to be understood in relation to other ideas. In his second example, in attempting to strengthen his argument, Graff uses an academic reference, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by Thomas S. Kuhn. Kuhn says, Both the literati and the scientist have remained largely walled up within their clashing assumptions about objectivity, the smugness of which might have been punctured had these parties been forced to argue with each other in their teaching (341). Even though Graff and Kuhn share the same thoughts, Kuhn s reference does not provide any evidence to support his claims. He then introduces Gregory Colomb, which his reference again doesn t add credibility; it detracts from the essay because readers have to read the text several times just to get through this part of the writing. Graff says, Imagine trying to write and academic paper when you send that almost anything you say can be used against you and that the intellectual moves that got you an A in existentialist philosophy may get you a C minus and a dirty look in Skinnerian behaviorism (342) . He goes on to say, When students fail to identify a cultural literacy item on a test, the problem ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 26. A Response On Nozick s Conception Of Knowledge Emmaline DiPace Professor Theodore Korzukhin PHIL 10100 October 29, 2016 A Response to Nozick s Conception of Knowledge In everyday life, people often claim knowledge of various facts and experiences. However, despite the regularity of such claims, it is difficult to articulate what knowledge specifically is and what conditions are necessary to constitute knowledge of a specific fact or event. One set of conditions for knowledge, known as justified true belief, states that a person knows something if that thing is true, if they believe it, and if they are justified in believing it (Gettier 345). This theory, however, was shown to be problematic by the philosopher Edmund Gettier. By proposing two examples, Gettier showed that the conditions of justified true belief are not sufficient to establish knowledge (345 346). Although Gettier found this flaw, he did not propose any alternate conditions of knowledge to add to or replace those of justified true belief (346). This is where Nozick s idea of knowledge, presented in Knowledge from Philosophical Explanations, becomes relevant. Nozick s conditions for knowledge attempt to define knowledge without being swayed by cases such as the Gettier examples. In this paper, I will first summarize Nozick s conception of knowledge as well as some of the reasoning for including each condition. I will then try to find an example to show that Nozick s conditions, although more widely applicable to knowledge than justified true ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. Max Enthusiasm Research Paper The first big experimental or avant garde film of the 1930s was L Age d Or, or The Golden Age, released in 1930. It was directed by Luis Buñuel and written by him and one of the most famous painters of all time, surrealist Salvador Dalí. However, the two were not getting along by the time production began and Buñuel supposedly ran Dalí off the set while brandishing a hammer. They were fresh off making a landmark in avant garde cinema, the shocking Un Chien Andalou. That was a short film, but L Age d Or was closer to feature length at 63 minutes. Like Un Chien Andalou, there is no clear plot and events that take place appear to be random. Surrealism is an obvious influence and well known Surrealist artist Max Ernst appears as an actor. Just two years prior, he made A Man with a Movie Camera, one of the most important experimental films of the 20th century. It had no story, but it did have highly innovative cinematography and pioneered several filmmaking and editing techniques. Enthusiasm was about Soviet miners in Eastern Ukraine and didn t have nearly the same impact as A Man with a Movie Camera, but it was similar in that didn t have any actors or straightforward narrative. There are some neat shots using double exposure and the film running backward, as well as editing that s at times much faster than what was common at the time. It was also the first sound film from Vertov. Enthusiam is interesting, but it wasn t as historically significant or groundbreaking as others in this era. I wouldn t recommend checking it out until you see most or all of the rest of this list. 1933 saw the release of Lot In Sodom, a 28 minute long American short directed by James Sibley Watson and Melville Webber. • 29. A Woman Who Was A Girl Once upon a time there was a woman who was unexpectedly pregnant. She had big brown eyes, short hair, and her physique was slim since she lived in the gym and practiced for volleyball. Even though the little seed in the woman s stomach was not planned, her parents were overly excited for another child. They already had two of their own to take care of but were ready for another challenge. A couple months into the pregnancy, they were shocked to know the child was a girl. They had two boys before that and thought they would have another one. Her parents did not know what to name their first daughter, but her mother thought of Alinali, which many could not pronounce one bit. On the other hand, her father thought of something simple, like Nicole. Every day after she was born, her parents cherished her and their other two sons. They showed unconditional love on a daily basis and always gave an abundant number of hugs and kisses. Three years went by when Nicole and her siblings had one more addition to the family. Sadly, things began to change. Her parents had struggled financially and were extremely stressed. Looking for ways to help the family, both parents worked assiduously to bring money to the table, and that is why her mother applied for a side job at a hotel. Injuring her back at her first job, which had dealt with cars, her mother could not work no longer, so all the responsibility was left on the father. They managed and were still very thankful, but the mother s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Analysis Of Rosie The Riveter Rosie the Riveter Rosie the Riveter was a female icon created in a time of global war during the 1940s; she symbolized women who built ships and planes, and produced munitions (Ellis 478). She was created to be a reminder to everyone to try new things, test limits, and believe in each other. (Mather Thrift). She also represents any woman defense worker (Harvey). The women influenced by her became ambulance drivers, delivered airplanes, and decoded messages (Ellis 478). Norman Rockwell is the artist while Howard Millar was the one who created her (Harvey).
