provide the meaning. The act of listening is just as complex as interpreting the story, both aspects give
history a better understanding. The uniqueness of oral history can t compare to written history due to
the compassion and emotions that are evoked while talking. There are social implications of oral
history that come in various forms which effect the process. Although it is a complex process, it
enhances historical practices for many reasons.
The comparison between oral and written history has many discrepancies that impact the
understanding of history in a great way. Oral history has the ability to evoke many emotions due to
being able to see the body language of the speaker. Gestures create emphasis on various words which
may have a significant meaning to the speaker. These gestures would not be seen through text thus it
allows readers to experience the story through emotions as well as facts. The intensity of words also
creates emphasis which is only available through speech. Francis Good uses an analogy to express the
difference between text and oral accounts. Good states manuals and handbooks invariably provide
advice on the issues, problems and strategies involved, but practice and comment show considerable
divergence at times (Good, 362) which alludes to the conclusion that textual accounts can leave out
some information. These aspects contribute to how the audience perceives the information given,
importance will be given to items which can t be expressed through text. Oral history serves a social
purpose in today s society. Oral accounts give the public a better understanding about social, political
and economic issues which may not be written about.
Oral history changes the precedent of how history is interpreted. It enhances the historical practices by
emphasizing important aspects and revealing stories which may not have been heard otherwise. Oral
history and interviews are particularly beneficial for minorities, including women and the illiterate, to
